The Theory of Everything

Have you seen the trailer for The Theory of Everything, the new movie about physicist Stephen Hawking and his first wife Jane? It comes out November 7th, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it. The movie is based on Jane's memoir, Travelling to Infinity, which chronicles their extraordinary courtship and life together.

The trailer focuses on their romance, but, in real life, their marriage also grew complicated. If you're curious, check out this fascinating NPR post. Here's a quote from Jane herself:
"I had two tiny babies, I was running the home and looking after Stephen full time: dressing, bathing, and he refused to have any help with that other than from me. I thought that to coerce him into taking these measures would have been too cruel. One of the great battles was getting Stephen to use a wheelchair. I'd be going out with Stephen on one arm, carrying the baby in the other, and the toddler running alongside. Well, it was hopeless because the toddler would run off and I would be unable to chase. So that kind of thing made life rather impossible."
Thoughts? Will you see it? She sounds like an amazing woman.

I know -although I haven't seen her for a while now - Lucy Hawking, Stephen Hawking's daughter, so I'm not sure how I feel about seeing this film. Lucy is a very lovely, talented lady herself and a great novelist if you want a fun, but intelligent read.

Before I had made the connection that she was Stephen Hawking's daughter, we were having coffee together and she was showing me some photos of her son. I was peering at them thinking, "Why is Stephen Hawking in all her family photos?". Talk about feeling stupid!

oh wow, that's amazing, jo!

I'm not sure how I feel about this film having seen Hawking with Benedict Cumberbatch. It would be hard to beat Benedict's performance.

I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but....Stephen Hawking is British?! Haha, I've just heard his lectures since he lost his voice, so it had never occurred to me that it would be in an accent other than his own. Whoops!

Anyway, yes, I'd love to see this movie. ;)

....ah, so now I look him up and find out he and Jane divorced?! Uuuuugh!

Lucy Hawking is indeed very lovely and talented. Funny to see her picture as a little girl; I worked with her at New York Magazine in the late '90s, when she was a fact-checker.--Alex

Worth putting in a positive review for Jane Hawking's previous book which is one of my all time favorites-

Music to Move the Stars: A Life with Stephen Hawking.

Very excited for the film! :)

I saw this preview in the theater recently. The movie looks SO interesting. I feel like it's sort of hard to think of Stephen Hawking as anything but a brilliant mind, so it completely caught me off guard (in the best way possible) to see him as a teenager, a husband, a father. So NORMAL. Makes me feel bad for thinking of him as simply a mind. Thanks for reminding me of this movie -- I do want to see it!

Not gonna lie, I also didn't know he was British. Seems like maybe they should have chosen a "British" computer!! :D

Yes! I saw the preview when I saw The Hundred Foot Journey (also worth seeing) and I can't wait. My Stephen Hawking education comes from Big Bang Theory, so this will be a good introduction into his life.

This looks amazing. I noticed you have a great documentary missing from all of your lists. You need to watch Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. It is an incredibly emotional doc, but the story is truly amazing. Check it out when you have some time.

Wow! What a wonderful woman, wife, mother! Can't wait for the movie. Thanks for sharing!

I really want to see this, it does look good.

But from what I've seen of Benedict Cumberbatch's Hawking, he did a brilliant job, and I feel like I'll be trying to compare it to that!

I'll still probably see it though.

Tearing at this trailer. My husband was recently diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and it just changes everything. Marriage is so much harder but it's also more beautiful. This hit home. But don't know if I have the guts to see it in theatres (I will be sobbing!)

This movie sounds great, I actually just watched the documentary Hawking on Netflix this week. He narrated it himself and it leads you through his childhood into adulthood. Amazing and brilliant!

I cannot wait to see this!

she was amazing, though it sounds like both his marriages were pretty challenging...i wonder if this movie was made from his bio he recently published or going off of stories...?
