Have a sweet weekend.

What are your plans for the weekend? We're heading to our friends' cabin in Connecticut, to pick berries and splash in the river, and Toby has asked me one gazillion times what color I think the rental car will be. ("It will be a surprise!" I always say. "I think red," he always says.) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web...

Those are my shoes!!! But I'm not trendy (seriously). I've had them for over a year and I live in Barcelona not NY.

Haha - Toby's question makes me laugh out loud!

How ironic: I've been rediscovering Humans of New York this week *and* considering Birkenstocks. That last part is something I never thought I'd hear myself say... but they just look so comfortable!

Hilarious about the shoes. Ditto-I've had them about a year now, wearing at work now while reading this, and am also SO not trendy!

RE: The best friend article. I have a best friend from high school (so that's 14 yrs!) We've lived very far from each other for 10 yrs but we can always call each other and it's like no time has passed. Part of me thinks that "best friends" have to form when you're young and unfiltered. And I think those friendships are sometimes more sustainable when you don't live near each other. You can grow and change as people but always have that takes-you-warts-and all person to call up when you need an ear. Neither of us have sisters and that's what I always imagine having a sister would be like.

Haha I think Birks are having a real moment right now- I remember when I was in high school only the "hippy" kids wore them

The lawn jarts photo made me laugh because... I DID almost bite it when a kid threw one at me at a block party in the 80s.

Also-- I have been wearing those Birks since 2006!! I maintain they are classically cool.

Great photo, I like it a lot! I don't have plans for the weekend, just relaxing I guess...

I love your friend's anniversary tradition -- makes me wish I had thought of that... um, eleven years ago.

P.S. Happy weekend! I hope Toby gets his red car(:

It's so funny that Birkenstocks are cool again. I wore them in the 90's during my "hippy" grateful dead phase.

I found the article on best friends really interesting. I haven't had a best friend since high school(I'm now 35)and it kinda makes me sad. I would love to have that 'partner in crime', THE one friend who gets you like no one else. Women who have best friends are truly blessed.

i always look forward to your links, and this list is my favorite! i really enjoyed the best friend article. i'm kind of lost in the best friend world. your friend's anniversary tradition is super adorable. the historic color photographs were amazinggg. i ended up stoping and starring into charlie chaplin and marilyn monroes eyes. they were such captivating photos. grandpa's photos are beautiful, such an interesting project. and i love humansofny! it always has such interesting posts.

I don't have a best friend, I really related to that article! I have a small group of friends who support and fulfill me in different ways. I think the concept of 'best friends' for adults can be a little unrealistic.

Love the instagram! I am inspired to create an insta account now just to follow HONY!

That bird is pretty.

I have those same shoes in red! Oooh does that mean I'm trendy?

I hope you have a fun weekend! I'm trying to finish work in the car on my way to vacation -- our rental car's black in case Toby is curious. :)

The photo series of pastel-colored lovebirds by Leila Jeffreys reminded me of childhood in general. Such a great capture of innocence. Thank you for introducing Jeffreys' work.

The best friend article got me thinking Joanna. I do have a best friend. We met in college. We have a history together but more importantly we have chosen to grow together. She was my first real "relationship" and I learned so much from her friendship that I apply to my relationship with my husband.

We made it to Friday and my favorite posts!! The links that resonated the most with me were the Old photos with added color---ahmazing!! And secondly, the best friend post. I have come to the conclusion that some people need a best friend more than others. For instance, woman who have sisters eventually as adults their closest friend is their sister. For me, haven't had a true best friend since my teenage years. After that I've had several close friends, and friends that I feel have the potential to be my best friend, but it just hasn't worked out. Since I do not have any sisters, I've seriously gone through life searching for my soul sister and have yet to find her (I won't give up)! I agree with the comment above that if you do have a best friend it's a blessing. Besides your sister, do you have a best friend Joanna?

I hate it when people make snarky comments about car seats and "how did we survive" without them. Look up the statistics-- many, many children didn't. We were just lucky enough not to be one of them. There is nothing inherently safe about cars and taking special precautions with children just makes sense.

Joanna, this might be totally crazy, but were you staying near Kent, CT? My boyfriend and I went on a hike nearby and I swore I saw you, but didn't realize it until Monday morning when I read this post.
