Four Father's Day food gifts

Dads can be tough to shop for. Once you've given him Beatles memorabilia and fancy shaving cream, it's hard to come up with something he'll actually like...and use. I've found that one thing that always works is food. Delicious, can't-resist, curated-just-for-him dad food. Here are four foolproof options, just in time for June 15th...

Mouth has tons of food gifts, but since Alex pointed out last night that "jerky is like crack for guys," we'd recommend The Big Jerk ($50) features five gourmet flavors, from salmon to chicken to filet mignon.
We got a gift of Jeni's ice cream during those hazy days when Toby was first born. I remember waking up one morning and finding Alex in a daze on the sofa. "I ate an entire pint last night," he said. "An entire pint." It's that good. You can't go wrong with the Top Sellers Pint Collection ($48), which includes flavors like salty caramel and brambleberry crisp, but these ice cream sandwiches ($32), above, look ridiculously good, too.
My dad goes nuts for the stinky, bloomy, barnyard-y triple-cream cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery, and their Everybody's Favorite package ($35) includes Mt Tam cheese, fruit and nut crostini, and a bamboo cheese board. Another great place for cheese gifts is Murray's Cheese, the West Village shop that delivers anywhere in the country.
Belgian Beerboxx curates packages of Belgian beers, in a range of prices ($46 to $152). Belgian beers have rich, creamy textures and are typically stronger than their British and American counterparts. (Dads, consider it a challenge.)

Thoughts? Any other places you love for food gifts? What does your dad like?

P.S. Alex's picks for Father's Day gifts and eight confessions of a new dad...

i ADORE jeni's ice cream! My favorite flavor is goat cheese with cherries - it sounds strange, but it tastes like cheesecake with a subtle tang. It's delicious.

Loved the beer box idea but they have such steep shipping rates ($100 for 12 bottles)!

Gordy's Pickle Jar! They're based in DC and their pickles are UNREAL. My Dad *LOVES*

My husband is growing an epic beard, so this year I've bought him some beard-ey gifts (beard oil/cream, wooden comb etc).

My dad is currently on a NutriBullet health kick, so for Father's Day I'm planning to buy him packages of chia seeds, goji berries, and flaxseed to mix in his smoothies. :)

JAM according to Daniel. Yummy jam from Charlottesville, VA. I gave everyone in my family a jar of jam for Christmas two years ago. It's that good.

My dad adores graphic t shirts so I always try to find him something witty/delightfully snarky. Threadless is a great site for that :)

I always love the gift guides for your parents - they seem so cultured. I ran out of Miller Lite one time, and getting my dad to try a Shiner was torture. I have so far resisted buying Duck Dynasty stuff, but don't fret, it's been gifted to me. *I* would love to receive anything off your gift lists (even the "dad" stuff)!

Great ideas! I find food is a great "dad" gift, because I know what he likes, and he really appreciates it.

Mine has a bit of a sweet tooth, so I usually bake something super amazing to take to my parent's house for dinner. :-)

I want beef jerky. Mmmmm!!! It's too bad I don't have a dad to shop for. It'll be nice I guess when we celebrate Father's Day when my husband becomes a father (whenever that'll be!).

lucy, yes! we lived in france and england when we were babies and used to go on vacation to ireland every summer.

Love the beer box idea, but don't forget your local indie beer store! The staff are often incredibly knowledgeable and delighted to come up with personal recommendations catered to your (or your dad's) tastes-- plus no shipping! (And as a bonus, leftovers keep nicely in the fridge or the basement.)

Everyone I know that has tried jerky says it's good but not as good as biltong or droewors. That's the real deal. Men buy bags of the stuff when sitting at home watching 'the game' (insert any sport you like).

Jeni's is seriously dangerous beyond belief. Before we moved up here to NYC we lived in Nashville, which has its own Jeni's. One of my favorite places ever.

Great ideas, Joanna (per usual). I was so inspired, I just purchased the Cowgirl Creamery's "Everybody's Favorite" for my dad. My dad and I are both huge cheese fans, so I know he's going to love this.

Another good gift spot is Zingerman's: Food by Mail. My dad always sent me a cheese and bread set whenever I moved as a house warming gift. I guess I'm just continuing the tradition of mailing cheese.

Oh the ice-cream sandwiches look amazing and the cheese looks totally yummy!

I just bought my husband the Roaster's Pick subscription from Stumptown Coffee Roasters. We moved away from Portland, OR about a year ago and he misses drinking their coffee on a regular basis. With a 9 month old baby that still doesn't sleep through the night, I'm sure my husband will more than enjoy this gift! I can't wait for him to receive it!

That photo of you, sister, and father in Ireland is gorgeous! Love these ideas. I actually don't know any people, male or female, who eat jerky. But these gourmet ones look inviting. The ice cream and cheese, even better. For younger dads who like to cook, a set of knives or another neat cooking or prep item would be modern and well used. For my own dad (older -- in his 70s) I default to books a lot -- fiction and nonfiction. My father always wants my suggestions for good (high) literary reads as we are both lovers of James Joyce. Or history reads -- my husband usually can suggest some good things. Music, too -- my dad likes a wide array of music, from classical to contemporary and pop, from high to low and back. So cds have often been a good choice (and his wife loads them in the ipod etc).
When I was in my teens and 20s, I had many years of giving non-starter gifts -- the ties, socks, shirts, cologne. None of that was worth it because he had a very particular taste and it was too costly to shop in his price range anyway.

A member of my family recently had a special birthday. Since I could not be there and I was afraid no one would be there to celebrate with her and fix her dinner and a cake, I sent her Maryland crab cakes from the crab place and a Smith Island lemon cake. As I didn't get to taste it I can only go by her thank you but I think I hit it out of the park! The crab place is at http://www.crabplace.com. Smith Island Cakes are at http://smithislandcake.com/?gclid=CN7blI3B4b4CFc1QOgod-jgAuQ. I know my father would have love getting this for father's day.

I have been making homemade oatmeal raisin cookies for my Dad, Step Dad, Father in Law and Husband for the past couple years. They go crazy for them. (Doesn't oatmeal raisin seem like such a Dad thing? I would never make them for anything else, as I would generally make chocolate chip or something fancier, but that particular kind screams DAD to me!)

My husband (aka babydaddy) has been researching fitbit wristbands for months, but hasn't felt he could justify the purchase, so I'm going to get one. I know he'll be so excited and totally ignore us for a little bit while he sets it up and downloads all the corresponding apps. What a nerd! I love getting him things he can nerd out about since he gives so much of his time, energy and excitement to our family. He's the best!

The National Mustard Museum in Middleton, WI has an amazing mustard-of-the-month subscription service! My siblings and I all pitched in to get this for our dad for Father's Day! It's a gift that will give all year long! Brilliant if your dad is waaaay into deli foods (which mine is)!

My father always asks for... money! He is a great great F1 fan, so what he enjoys most is going to some F1 grand prix every year. So my sister, my mother and me always give him money: christmas, birthday and fathers day. So easy...

First off, that is a ridiculously sweet picture of your dad.

What a brilliant idea to send Jeni's Ice Cream! I love her creativity with ingredients, which reminds me a whole lot of my dad. Will send the Father's Day Collection shortly. :D

Before moving to France, I lived in Columbus, (Jeni's birthplace). It is THE BEST! It's nice to see a Columbus company getting so much love. I miss their brown butter almond brittle flavor!

These are really fun and a good idea. My mom always says giving people "use-up-able" gifts is a good idea!

Just ordered the Big Jerk for my dad! That was a great idea, and that website is addicting. I think everyone is getting food gifts from me from now on.

Hilarious. Your husband is 360 degrees the opposite from mine. Everything you listed that your husband would like are things I would like, like stinky cheese and belgian beers etc.... None of that interests my husband unfortunately... :-(

Jeni's is the best! I try to send it for every holiday/moment/occasion I can! Go Ohio! :)

These gifts are fun but expensive! My husband and I give our parents gifts in the $10-$20 range...is that crazy?

My FIL is probably getting organic seeds for his garden from us (again) this year, but I'm all out of (budget) ideas for my own pop.

Love it! Thanks for the suggestion to Mouth. I ordered the 'Big Jerk' set for my brother's birthday! & some extra stuff for the rest of the family! :) All of the choices looked so delicious but since it's too close to Father's day, I'm going to make pizza for my dad - food is the only thing my dad accepts with a smile & with no complaints.

First time commenting too - I LOVE your blog & your 'voice'. You're doing a great job!

I generally love the blessing aides for your folks - they appear to be so well bred. I used up Miller Lite one time, and getting my father to attempt a Shiner was torment. I have so far opposed purchasing Duck Dynasty stuff, however don't worry, its been talented to me. *i* would love to get anything off your blessing records (even the "father" stuff)!
