Mindy Kaling interviews Billy Crystal

My sister Lucy and I sometimes jokingly chat about which movie characters we'd want to marry. I always end up vacillating between Harry from When Harry Met Sally and Charlie from So I Married an Axe Murderer. (Both are funny and cute, right?)

So, she naturally emailed me today when she saw that Mindy Kaling—writer, actress and noted romantic-comedy enthusiast—had interviewed Billy Crystal about true love, life-long friendship and improvised jokes in When Harry Met Sally. Check it out here, if you'd like.
P.S. A When Harry Met Sally prank, and the horror version:)

Go for Harry, no question.

Whyyyy is this only a transcript? I NEED to at least hear their voices!

Oh I can totally hear their voices in my head though. What a great interview. So sweet. Now I need to watch When Harry Met Sally again!

I so loved reading this, it really made me smile...even though I know nothing about Mindy Kaling apart from her name!

Nice to hear that Billy & Meg still got along when they met up recently, I hope that's really true.

Oh I am obsessed with Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games. I know he is only 17, let's just ignore that. He is such a good man though. The older I get the more I appreciate the value of kindness and treating others well.

Bonjour from Paris!
(I always wanted to say that--I am actually hear visiting from DC).

My boyfriend and I met at the college where Harry and Sally met, and we drove to NY after graduation. After many years, I married him. So, I am with you, Joanna.

PS: We already decided to go as H&S for Halloween.

I've been a longtime fan of yours, Joanna... and didn't think it was possible to like you more. Until now... Charlie from "So I Married An Axe Murderer" is one of my all-time favorite characters. I thought I was alone in that one:)

Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, Dr. Christy Nielsen in What Dreams May Come, Will Thacker in Notting Hill, or Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You.

Totally have never played this game either. ;)

I have a weird affinity for Steve Coogan in Hamlet 2. And Joseph Gordon Levitt in 500 Days Of Summer (which probably makes a lot more sense.) But I was wondering, who does your sister pick??

I love 'When Harry met Sally' but I have no doubts about with who I would like marry: Jack Callaghan in 'While you were sleeping' :))

Loooove Charlie from SIMAM (too long to type out obviously).

I'm smitten. I'm in deep smit.

I can recite practically every word of When Harry Met Sally...favorite movie, for sure! I get teary eyed thinking about that last line, 'when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible'
And that was a great interview - two fantastic people. Thanks for sharing!

So I Married an Axe Murderer is one of the most underrated rom-coms of all time! I love it!

I love this interview. So fantastic!

Can't stop thinking about Axe Murderer now. I love the dad busting on his son for having a big head! "It's like Sputnik! It's got its own weather system!" "Go cry yourself to sleep on your huuuge pillow!" HAH! I die...

I have such a crush on the Tom Hanks character in You've Got Mail...what was his name, something Fox? Bookish, smart, good with kids and dogs...how can you not love him?

CinthyaG said...

'So I Married an Axe Murderer' is possibly the most underrated comedy out there - the drunk Scottish father (played by MM, too)! I can't believe it's been 20 years since its showing. Mike Myers is endearing in it, but I'm afraid despite my addiction to sarcasm I'm a big romantic. I'd have to go with Harry.

Joanna, thank you SO much for posting this! I got to read the interview before I watched the season finale of The Mindy Project. I'm a huge fan, and this exchange really gave the finale so much depth for me. Glad that I check your blog daily. I never would have come across the interview in time otherwise!!

Did you see the Jezebel article outlining the Mindy Project references? So good!

PS although i have to say, although i LOVE danny castellano, i think he + mindy have the worst chemistry together! the show is so funny but they seem so awkward, don't you think?

Had to post after your comment about How I married an axe murderer - I watched that movie with my now husband the first time we 'hung out' at his place when we first were dating. The song "There she goes" by The La's from the soundtrack was our song at our wedding. I think we might have to find this on netflix - it's been a while since we watched! Such a funny film :)

Hello! I had a lil' suggestions for your "Have a Good Weekend" links post! This blog is "written" by a dog named Daisy. SUPER cute and great for kids :) Toby might like it! http://thedaisydiaries1.blogspot.com/ Within the past couple weeks Daisy has gotten a bad diagnosis from the vet, these are her last months and I would love to honor her (and the writer of the blog) with having their link on your blog!

Joanna, I totally agree - Mindy and Danny Castellano have the WORST chemistry!!! I most wanted things to work out with Josh, but Casey was by far the most fun to watch. Hysterical. PS - Do you watch New Girl? You must see the Prince episode!!!!!!!

Incredible! Not a movie, but I think I'd like to marry Ted from HIMYM. No reason to wait 9 years for Ms. Right :)

I feel like such a fuddy-dud but I do not find Mindy Kaling funny or entertaining in any way. She's just annoying to me. I couldn't even finish the audio version of her book because her voice drove me to insanity.

And I'm not uptight, really! I love comedy and humor and laughing. What is wrong with me? LOL

In other news, I've always LOVED Aidan from Sex and the City.

I've never thought about which leading man I'd marry! It's hard for me to separate characters from the actors who portray them. But if I had to choose I think I'd say, Shemar Moore in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. There's something about a man who overlooks all baggage and patiently waits for a woman to let him in that just totally 100% gets me.

... call me crazy :)
