Lipstick Challenge: week four

Top row: Tarte Exposed, Rimmel by Kate Moss #08
Bottom row: Urban Decay Catfight, Lipstick Queen Medieval, Dolce & Gabbana Dahlia

This month, Cup of Jo editor Caroline accepted the challenge to wear a different lipstick every day—from red to blue to black. This week, per your suggestions, we took the photos in the same spot each day. The light varied slightly, depending on the hour of day, but hopefully you can compare the colors more easily! Here's her recap...

1. Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in Exposed
This line promises to make your lips "6000% more moisturized in 28 days." That sounded like crazy talk to me, but it did make my lips appear fuller. I wore this to dinner at our favorite local spot, where I hoped I looked gamine in the flickering tea lights. "That color doesn't really look like anything," said the boyfriend, who quickly added, "and that's not a bad thing." I loved the super matte finish, which made my face feel polished.

2. Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss #08
I wore this lipstick on a day with nothing special planned, yet it elevated my everyday look and made buying groceries and walking the dog feel sort of glamorous. The dusty rose color is perfect for times when you want to look effortlessly sexy (like you didn't try too hard—or even better, like you didn't try at all). I felt like I was channeling the lipstick's namesake supermodel, who seemingly rolls out of bed looking great. Incredibly, this lipstick is UNDER FIVE DOLLARS. But pretending to be Kate Moss is priceless.

3. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Catfight
Confession: Despite its not-so-pretty name, this bright pink lipstick made me feel...pretty! (I almost broke into the song from West Side Story, but controlled myself because, you know, social expectations.) This was my lipstick of choice for grabbing drinks with old college friends (when I wanted to look like I'd improved with age). More important, I felt great wearing it since all Revolution lipsticks are not just gorgeously pigmented, but vegan and cruelty-free. After all, kindness trumps prettiness any day.

4. Lipstick Queen in Medieval
During the day, I was stopped by not one, not two, but three strangers (three strangers!) who asked what lipstick I was wearing. Fascinating fact: This sheer red was inspired by women in medieval times, who would stain their lips with lemons, since wearing lipstick was considered a sin. The color wears off fairly easily, so you'll need to reapply. But if you want dewy, rosy lips (and, really, who doesn't?), I'd highly recommend it.

5. Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Dahlia
"That's intense!" said Joanna, the moment she saw me. But intensity is good, right? These new lipsticks contain fifty percent emollients, which is a fancy way of saying they won't dry out your lips. But what I REALLY love about Dolce & Gabbana lipsticks are their bold, dramatic colors. This dark orchid shade made me walk a little taller and put a little more swagger in my step. I'll definitely wear this whenever I want to feel like a femme fatale (which may or may not be embarrassingly often).

...And that concludes the lipstick challenge! If you missed them, here are weeks one, two, and three. In the end, my favorites were the versatile NARS Manhunt and my everyday staple, Laura Mercier Healthy Lips. Thanks again for all of your amazing comments and suggestions these past few weeks! Please stay tuned for more fun challenges, coming up soon...

P.S. Hair tutorials and how to get rid of a pimple.

Great lipsticks. I'm surprised to hear how inexpensive the Rimmel one is - sounds like it might be cheaper than over here in actual London!

This series would really benefit from consistent photos with the same lighting, distance, and background.

I loved this series, wish it didn't have to end! Caroline - Would you consider a monthly spot instead to keep it going? It's been so cool to see how much each color changes your face. ps: your eyebrows look amazing! :)
Have a great weekend!

Love the Lipstick Queen Medieval. Looks great and sounds like it's no fuss. That's the key for me! I've really enjoyed this series. I'm always up for a new lipstick! Thanks!

I looove Urban Decay Catfight--I wanted a bright pink for a while. My bf nixed Anarchy, which he said was too bright, but I think Catfight is the bomb. I feel so badass in it.

The Rimmel one is my favorite. Under $5 sounds right up my alley. This has been a fun challenge, very informative. Thanks.

I love lipstick and own over 40 colors in my collection. I loved this series Joanna!

Do you think Caroline would enjoy a hair challenge? Lol

Just kidding but I would love hair ideas! (Already checked all the ones in the blog, love them)

Thank you for this! I have been trying to be a bit more brave with my lip color so this is quite helpful. Caroline and I have similar hair/skin color...so I am going to go ahead and order her two favorites to start with!

Love Lipstick Queen's Medieval! That's one of my go-to shades for work or when I don't want a lot of saturation. Super fun set of posts, gals!

On a side note, normally when I hear there will be a "contributor," I groan, but Caroline's preeeeeeeeetty awesome. Yall are awesome, ladies (with or without the comma)!

I loved this series! I ended up buying the LM Healthy Lips. I find it hard to tell what lipsticks will look like on a person so it was fascinating to see how each one changed the look.

Is it possible to talk about the longest-lasting lipsticks, or how to get the most out of them? I'm an avid lip stain wearer because I don't want to deal with worrying about re-application but some of these lipsticks are too stunning to resist!

Thanks for reviewing the LipSurgence!

What a great way to end the week! All those colors are so pretty and fresh!

Also totally loving Caroline's contributions. As a longtime reader I was nervous when you said that you'd be taking on someone new, but Caroline's contributions are so great and flow so seamlessly with everything else :) thank you Joanna and Caroline!

Just went out and bought the Urban Decay lipstick at lunch. Can't wait to wear it to a wedding this weekend!!

I second the call for this to become a regular series - not necessarily once a week (or 5 new lipsticks a week, because I'm sure that could get expensive), but a roundup every once in a while of your favorites!

I wear Lipstick Queen Medieval all the time. It works so well with my super-fair complexion.

Interesting that you also love Nars Manhunt - that is my other "go to"!

I am definitely going to try Laura Mercier Sheer Lip Color, since we seem to be on the same vibe!
Thanks!

I love these posts Caroline! I've been loyal to revlon super lustrous for awhile, but you've inspired me to experiment with new brands and colors. Thanks! (Also you're writing is delightfully witty!)

I recommend Tokyo Milk ... I got a gift of the stuff and I am in love with it. The lotions are great, scents soft, lipgloss in a tube is fabulous. I am very fair with white/blonde hair so red/dark lipsticks can make me look good or dead :)

Well, I guess the take away from this series is that you have the ability to pull off just about any lipstick. I'm thinking about some crazier colors for myself (like blues and greens)!

I think this series could have taken it to the next level by showing the same shade on multiple skin tones. I also agree with the above commenter that photos should have been taken at the same time with same lighting conditions.
That being said, I'm hoping you guys bring back some deeper content - the Motherhood Around the World articles were fascinating - one of the best things I've ever read on a blog and something I looked forward to weekly. Tell me you're working on a similar project going forward!

I LOVE this series! Would you be willing to do a lipstick tutorial? I'm just starting to experiment and I feel like I could benefit from expertise in how to apply it. Is lipliner a thing still or is that just something my Aunt wore in the 90's? Also blending happens? Help! :)

I have a challenge for you ladies! Can you find a lipstick shade that looks good on someone with red hair and a pink skin tone?! I have stayed as far away as I can from lipstick cause they all (so far) look TERRIBLE on me! No worries if you can't, just thought that could be an interesting challenge;)
