What music do you make out to?

For my last birthday, I was given some bluetooth speakers. And they are awesome. We listen to so much more music at home now (especially "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," which three-year-old Toby constantly and inexplicably requests), and we've also started playing music while making out. I had forgotten how music can instantly makes things so much steamier! My #1 song to set the mood is...

Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." It's a little depressing but so stirring. Keane's "Bend & Break" also sets a sexy mood.

And in the past...

High school: R.E.M.
College: Neutral Milk Hotel and Sigur Ros
Twenties: Serge Gainsbourg

What about you? Any favorite songs? I'd love some recommendations:)

P.S. How old were you when you had your first kiss, and would you schedule sex?

Yes, the Jeff Buckley version of that song is the best! Ray LaMontagne sets a nice mood. Try "Hold You in my Arms." Enjoy :)

For sure Danger Mouse and in particular Black and The Matador Has Fallen.

Portishead.

Also, almost anything by the Black Keys is pretty sexy.

I agree with Erin... Portishead is SO HOT.

I also like Deftones.

"I was made for lovin' you" by KISS always seems to get me in the mood. It's a little too loud to make out to, so then I switch to "Dance me to the end of love" by Leonard Cohen. Actually, anything by Leonard Cohen is good for a romantic smooching session.

Ahhh... the passion in Jeff Buckley's voice is unmatched. About ten years ago on our first date my husband and I spent hours just kissing in my tiny car to Grace. It. was amazing.

Liz M C said...

Sigh, Ray LaMontagne's voice is like butter on a hot knife. There are a few Jason Mraz songs that'll get the job done. I Won't Give up on Us is one of my favorites.

you should try jeff buckley's "everybody here wants you" if you're into making out to jeff buckley songs. that one is the ultimate.

Oh, more specifically, Delicate - Damien Rice.

Ooh, I really should employ mood music more often! One time I had my entire music library on shuffle when we started fooling around, and at the end of every song I had a mini panic attack that the next one was going to be a super boner-kill like "Never Gonna Give You Up" or something goofy like that. At least it would have been funny!

Sil said...

I love Jeff Buckley's voice but Hallelujah is pretty sad.

My favourite is Bryan Adams.

When I was a freshman in college my roommate moved out and I was left all alone and had trouble sleeping. I made a playlist of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah repeated like 10 times. I would fall asleep to it as my lullaby and it made my nights much more bearable. That song holds a very special place in my heart. It makes me feel less alone when I am at my loneliest.

As for a good making out songs - TV on the Radio "Make Love All Night Long" - that is one sexy song.

setthenet.com said...

Into the Mystic by Van Morrison, Mumford and Sons Awake my Soul, Ray laMonagne You are the best thing all great songs to make out too! But I have to say like many other Moms out there right now all that plays in our house lately is the Frozen Soundtrack.... "Do you want to build a snowman......."

This is so funny! My boyfriend is forever making fun of me for needing the "right" music! (Of course I don't really "need" it... ;)

I usually choose the xx or Tom Odell, or just a playlist I've made. He has totally different music tastes than me and prefers the Red Hot Chili Peppers (he emphasizes that they are "red and hot!")

I sent him this link in an email to prove I'm not the only one! :)

Anything by James Blake and Lana Del Rey (particularly National Anthem). Also, even though the lyrics might not be quite right for make out music, I LOVE Vampire Weekend.

The XX is so sexy for candle-lit romantic makeout sessions... otherwise I like more upbeat stuff that makes me feel mischievous--even rap. Kendrick Lamar and old-school Jay-Z.

Just One Thing - My Morning Jacket (I mean, the song lyrics, to me at least, totally sound like anticipating sex) and it's "last call" vibe is just so sexy.

Hey - The Pixies (the guitar is great!)

2. Be Here Now
3. Truly, Madly, Deeply and
4. For The Summer (great make-out session on a hot summer night in the pool...wink, wink.)!

Someone mentioned What a Wonderful World / Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I also love that, but I can't listen to it without crying, so it's not a great turn-on! They played that song in the final scene of the ER episode when Dr. Mark Greene died...I just can't get that scene and my reaction to it out of my mind when I hear that song!

This has inspired me to find a good song. It has brought up embarrasing old memories of college and making out to Sting - Desert Rose.

In high school it was usually Elliott Smith's Either/Or. College it was all about Morphine & Tom Waits. I feel like my twenties (especially this latter half) have been all about searching for the right person/the right music! Hate when a great song gets "ruined" by a bad experience!

It may be 22 years old, but Sade's "Ordinary Love" is always perfect for, er, disrobing. :) And the rest of that album. Her voice is like honey, so that automatically helps set the mood.

And just about anything by Nina Simone. Though it's very moody, "Lilac Wine" is a really good one.

I once had a guy I was seeing over and asked him to go on Spotify and put on some (unspoken but understood: mood) music. His first pick: Dry the Rain by the Beta Band. Let's just say it definitely did the trick.

Also, completely agree with others who say The XX (the long version of intro, especially) and Ray Lamontagne (although many of his songs are on the sad side).

@Joanna - I assume by Neutral Milk Hotel you mean In the Aeroplane Over the Sea? This whole album is pretty much about Anne Frank and The Holocaust! Not very sexy in my opinion. Perhaps you hadn't ever really given it much thought? I know parts of the album are cryptic, but Holland 1945 specifically refers to her death and mirrors it with the suicide of a friend. There is a beautiful interpretation called Transience and Transcendence by Max Heath that I encourage anyone who is interested to check out.

One of my playlists includes Jose Gonzalez's cover of heartbeats. We also love Iron and Wine's collaboration with Calexico, In the Reins.

I looove this topic, so fun seeing what people listen to when they're in the mood ;)

My first love was my senior year of high school, which was when Garden State came out - so Zero 7's Simple Things always bring me back to those happy times.

My college sweetheart (and FH!) and I fell in love in the spring, and would listen to Sea of Cake or Broken Social Scene, so that makes me nostalgic and tender.

Now I love listening to things like Tom Middleton's Serendipity... dreamy, romantic, passionate music with no distracting lyrics :)

Annnddd through it all, my love really couldn't care less what we're listening to, though he does have the happy association with SoC & BSS, too. So funny how it seems like we women care more!
