What everyone is wearing in NYC

This spring in NYC, something funny is happening: Everyone is wearing the same outfit. If you walk down the street in the West Village, you basically pass ten girls wearing the items above. It's uncanny.

The basic uniform: an army jacket, striped shirt, ankle jeans, a leather bag and white Converse (especially this slightly thinner, less-clown-shoe version) without socks (no socks is key).

Thoughts? Would you wear it? Are you wearing it right now? :)

P.S. Plus, the cutest spring dress I found today.

SO funny. I need a new Spring jacket and I WOULD get an army one, but don't want to specifically because everyone else has one!

I'd wear it here in Boston. Not so in love with the top but I don't love stripes- it's a boob thing.

Yes! I'd definitely wear that. In fact, you are describing some of my favorite pieces... and I live down in Oklahoma! Maybe the trend spread? It's easy, classic, and comfortable. What's not to love?

Too funny. I went to Bumbershoot last summer, a music fest in Seattle, and all the 16 year old girls were wearing those Converses. I realized I might be too old for them at that point.

And such love/hate about the army jacket. So cute and easy...but is it just totally overdone? Anyone?

Brianne said...

You know whats funny is that I just got back from tokyo, and everyone THERE is wearing the same outfit, too: Crisp khaki trench, black tights, tulle/lace skirt, and a simple sweater (they are also really into the khaki military jackets)

My uniform all year round is a dress and cardi. If it's winter then add a coat, leggings and scarf. I haven't worn jeans in eons!

Shock Minus Control said...

Well this trend has reached the suburbs of Vancouver too! Right now I am wearing a navy and white striped shirt, ankle jeans, fitted navy sweater, and when I do the school run shortly, I will be wearing my army green short trench coat and brown flats!

Tess said...

I'm in san diego and have definitely worn this! And I've seen it a lot on others too. Outfit of 2014 :)

Mary Kate said...

It's so true! I have a jacket just like that and I love it so I won't stop wearing it. But I've stopped with the striped shirts because you just see them EVERYWHERE, and as a tiny girl I will never ever go anywhere in flats, heeled/platform boots for me, thank you very much. But I still wish everyone would stop wearing my coat.

Mary Schaubert said...

I'm not wearing it right now...but I most certainly have in like, the past week! Too funny!

I'm in downtown Toronto and I literally left the house wearing this outfit yesterday (except I was wearing brown brogues and boyfriend jeans - rolled up/cuffed).

Kylie McLaughlin said...

I totally wore that yesterday except with booties and socks to keep my feet toasty.

Becca Gilgan said...

Yep, I agree! It's like the perfect, comfortable blend of preppy girl and hipster, something you definitely see on the streets of Toronto as well. That being said... I essentially wear the same outfit, except I substitute the white Converse for white Keds (though I did have those Converse 3 years ago :) It's funny that the army jacket is back in again, as I remember when they came out 3 years ago as well (also guilty of buying one at the time!) And stripes are a must. I can see you rocking that outfit as well Jo!

So why is the girl in the picture wearing what's not listed in the post ...?

I'd wear it -- but I try to mix it up a LITTLE more. I'm all about the trench instead of the army jacket this spring.

I'm wearing it right now! Too funny. Must be a hot look - here in MN, we're usually about 3 months behind the times for fashion trends!

I think this look is classic and clean. Perfect for spring.

Replace the converse with Keds and that is my Spring uniform! I'm a NYer too. I also noticed that girls in SF were wearing the same type of outfit when I was there last week.

my near-daily uniform these days here in santa monica, california, save for the jacket - although today there's enough of a chill in the air that the jacket would be quite nice!

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I wore the Chicago Winter Uniform - a long puffy coat/hood, snow boots, and a scarf wrapped around my face.

I'm from Spain and this outfit is also very common to see! This weekend I lived in my jeans+converse+parka look and so did lots of other girls in my city. I think its just a transitional thing, i am looking forward to higher temperatures to change up my outfits a bit xx Belen

Sorry, but maybe it's because you're a mom and probably have to go places with other moms of three year olds. This seems to be the most vanilla New York ever. This is certainly not what every one in New York is wearing.

Ha yes that's basically what I wear every day.

Susan Connor said...

Yes! I was just thinking the other day how stoked Converse must be to experience such demand.

But I will say, the key to this look is the little teeny tiny socky things you can buy so you can have the sockless look without gunking up your sneakers. Just got some myself and they're amazing to the point of life-changing. : )

A similar thing is happening in Europe, I'm noticing. I was in Spain for a few weeks and noticed many women had the long military jacket and lots of women are wearing the slimmer Converse sneakers. They are layering cool sweaters and shirts underneath instead of the striped shirt, though.

Also, everyone wears socks or nylons here, more or less without exception. I have been going sock-less because it's popular in the U.S., but I have gotten funny looks at my bare feet!

NYC is SO like this. There seems to be a uniform. I recall a few years ago, maybe it was 2000, when all the girls were wearing handkerchiefs in their hair. It was very cute, but I only saw it in NYC.
I like the above pieces, very easy and casual, just not very feminine.

vmcarnevale said...

SO funny. I'm wearing that exact outfit right this minute and was thinking to myself earlier, "this is totally going to be my spring uniform." Guess the Midwest (Indiana) isn't too far behind the trends!

Mel said...

I can definitely dig the look. What I can't understand is how people wear so many layers and lengthy heavy articles of clothing on such warm days. I may be one in a few but spring and summer is time to shed it all and soak in the vitamin d.

The aesthetic of the look is sound and timeless. The application in a NYC spring is practical. I, for one, long for the days where being distinctly "unique" in your dress isn't revered above actual style. (If the 1980's have taught us anything- unique doesn't mean better)

Not ashamed to say I would wear that and have worn something similar. I've been looking for a good but affordable army jacket for a while now.

Katie Jones said...

This is just one of the current global "cool-girl" uniforms. And it is cool-I have worn similar items. I am happy I didn't purchase the coat because I see a LOT of them paired with roughly the same items you've pictured here. As one poster mentioned, it's where you look; who you are; and who and what you surround yourself with. I've been lamenting the lack of originality in style/clothing lately. I think people have become much more homogenized style-wise and it's a bit boring. But to each her own. The person who used "normcore" is right on! Thanks, internet.

Normcore would be sweatpants or chinos instead of jeans. This is pretty much my uniform except I wear navy vans (lows), skinny grey-green or blue-grey Hyphen chinos from Anthro, a red striped Joe Fresh top or J.Crew painter long sleeve or T and a brown Soia and Kyo coat (opted for brown instead of green) and a Crownflora waxed cotton bag in green.

To me, the fact that "everyone" is wearing this outfit means that people are scared to be different and creative. It could be worse! Remember in 1991 when everyone was wearing flower-print stretch pants? My excuse is that I was in junior high, and technically still a kid. But there were adults wearing the same thing, so I say stripes are a major improvement!

meji said...

Hmm... I own all of these things and wear them often! I guess I was wearing the spring "uniform" and didn't even know it! In my defense, I've always been a big fan of striped shirts and wearing shoes that don't require socks.

CinthyaG said...

I'm a trench freak. For the past four years, I've wanted a lightweigh, tailored, but feminine, navy blue trenchcoat for Spring/Summer. I still haven't found what I'm looking for (hahaha). I blame it on my Burberry-clad sister! But I love the easiness of dresses; how easily one can dress them up or down and I wear them with boots until May or whenever warmer weather arrives in Seattle. I don't like how they look with heels or pumps on me; I think they make the dresses look matronly and dowdy if they don't hit me right at or slightly-above the knee. A dress, boots and shiny, swingy hair is all I need to feel like a million bucks. I'm a bit of a francophile, too, so I own at least six striped tops; love them, and wear them to death. Two have tiny holes that I've been able to mask. I like classic pieces with modern fabrics/detailing/shapes, so I'm afraid something I'll never be is "hip".

Sydney Greenberg said...

I think this outfit is just the latest iteration of a classic outfit that has evolved with style for decades now. The ease of a wide striped shirt has the french vibe that everyone considers classically chic. A slightly androgynous jacket seems to always be in style (now it's just the army green anorak instead of the khaki trench of a few years ago). Jeans, well that's just dependent on the times...you can find this same outfit archived in just about any cut of denim. Sometimes I'm dismayed to catch myself in such a similar outfit to so many other women, but then I think, it's classic for a reason, right?
p.s. my personal twist on the shoes is Jack Purcells, they're made by the same company as converses but have a bit more styled, less sporty vibe in my opinion

Elizabeth Scott said...

People are wearing that all over the country! Definitely here in Seattle too.

Eleanor James said...

I wore my army/cargo jacket all the time last year and am sure it will get a lot of use this year too. It's makes me feel more put together when I throw it on over jeans and a gray tee. Haven't found that perfect striped tee, but love the look. I pair my outfit with the jack purcell converse - much more comfortable, in my opinion. I love the look of the classics too though. Classic and simple.

Wow ... I'm a frumpy grad student in SF and I wear something pretty similar (with a few modifications):
(1) No slim Chucks. I'm with the other commenters; stay true to the original! If you want something slimmer, go with classic ballet flats.
(2) Cropped jacket. The longer length is really unflattering on pear-shaped me.
(3) Low (but visible) ankle socks. Those no-show socks always slide off of my ankles and end up in a ball around my toes!

That's so funny that everyone is wearing the same thing! Actually that's pretty much how it always is here in Stockholm Sweden - pick a neighborhood and everyone will be wearing some version of the same outfit. I think it's an cute, simple, classic look. If girls are wearing it in the midwest, NYC, and Europe...there's something right about it.

Sure it's probably what people are wearing in your demographic, but then again the majority of your readers are likely very similar to that as well.

NY high fashion is fascinating and interesting to see. However, that's not something we're going to recreate in Colorado. If we wanted to see those trends we could just open up the NY times fashion spread. :)

Yep - this is a portland look, too. Personally, I do ballet flats (or rain boots today) instead of converse, but this seems to be a version of the uniform of the year for sure! I'm ready for more warm weather so I can start wearing skirts and dresses instead.

Carla said...

Holy crap, I wore that yesterday.

RoselyC said...

I think it is a casual and simple outfit I would definitely wear it. The only thing I wouldn't wear are the converse with no socks, I've tried it and I can't, my feet feel weird with no socks on lol

My uniform.

haha! thanks for this. headed to NY next week and now i know just what to wear. ;)

Every girl in San Francisco is wearing this too! Military jackets are going strong.

Yep, that's what they're wearing here too ... and I'm in South Korea! I haven't seen Western fashion in a couple of years, but most tops here are very square/box-like these days. Is that a Korean thing, or is it like that everywhere? I can't get it to work!

I've also noticed a TON of trench coats. Mostly camel/tan, but a few Olivia Pope-inspired white ones as well.

Everyone is wearing that outfit in San Francisco too! Except instead of white converses, it's black ankle boots from Madewell. Haha.

Yes to this. Here in Toronto we've been embracing that look lately! My own variation swaps out converse for toms and i wear a nursing tank under my striped top :)

Cheryl said...

Ha! Looks like something I've seen in a magazine ;) Those converses are currently on my wish list on Amazon . .

It's one of the reasons why I haven't wanted to wear my army jacket this year. Also, I find it a little depressing just how homogenous everything is out there.

Ok, so this is weird because I just wore the same outfit yesterday when I took my kids out for a walk and ice cream. But even weirder is the fact that I live in Belgrade, Serbia in Eastern Europe! It just goes to show you that the world is getting smaller with all the internet, movies, magazines...

Branka said...

Another Eastern European here (Slovenia) and yes this outfit is definitely seen a LOT around here.. it's comfy and I guess we could say super trendy at the moment. This is my lazy day uniform, I may change up shoes and shirt but that's pretty much it.

Shop White Plum said...

That is so funny that everyone is dressing the same in NY. But I don't blame them since this is an adorable "go-to" spring outfit!

I think Minnesota must be ahead of the trend (for once!). I have been wearing this for the past five years (well, on and off, with other things mixed in, of course). It's classic!

Jodi said...

Ha! I'm also wearing my army jacket, skinnier, and white converse. There's nothing like a crisp white pair of shoes to welcome the spring!

Just wanted to share that I subconsciously soaked in this post and wore pregnancy version today without realizing why... ah, the internet.

This is my uniform! My husband makes so much fun of my army jacket. He calls it my "mom jacket," as in "mom jeans." It's very functional, with lots of pockets. I always wear it when we fly, so I can put the diapers, wipes, etc. in the pockets and have easy access when I am changing diapers in the tiny airplane bathrooms. I am sending him this post -- proof I haven't lost my fashion sense now that we've left NYC for SF and have 2 kids!

I think pinterest has done this to women- for instance, I can't go anywhere, were i live, with out seeing groups of girls, standing all together, all wearing either, riding boots, a vest, and monogrammed everything... or chacos, a baggy tee, nike shorts, and monogrammed everything else. It creates uniforms for girls! I wouldnt want to stand around with a pack of other women, all wearing the same thing with our hair the same way... One of the reasons I moved to NYC

Michelle Butler said...

Ahhhh!!! This has been my daily outfit for the last two years. At least now I'm trendy ;)

Kelley said...

Haha! Funny and true! On Sundays, swap the jeans for yoga pants ; )

This made me laugh! I just got back from NYC yesterday and this is basically what I wore every. single. day for a month there!

I am in WESTERN AUSTRALIA and I am wearing that exact outfit today, except with Golden Goose instead of Converse. It is unseasonally cold today! X

I've been noticing this trend EVERYWHERE!

I agree with some people - it's the Pinterest, Instagram, fashion blogs and the likes (H&M. Zara etc.) that have created this uniformed look.

And yes, all these looks are old classics.

Not sure where this is leading, but I am not liking it.

Best,
Nabiralka
