Pop quiz: What kind of underwear are you wearing right now?

The other day, my friend, Gemma, who recently moved from London to New York, asked me where American women buy everyday underwear. I drew a blank. Is there a go-to place for underwear? Right now, I wear Cosabella thongs (super flattering with jeans) or boy shorts (they make me feel sexy). But for cotton basics, I'm still wearing my ratty old maternity pairs. :)

So, I'd love to know: What underwear are you wearing right now? Where do you buy affordable everyday pairs? Thank you for any recommendations!

P.S. I kind of want to try these. :)
P.P.S. Did you have sex on your wedding night? And would you schedule sex?

I'm still wearing low cut maternity underwear (they don't rub on my incision) buuut I go to Target to get good ole fashion cotton ones and Nordstroms for fun and sexy.

I still buy all of my underwear from Victoria's Secret, they are comfy and last forever!

I'm currently wearing Gilligan O'Malley lace-trimmed cotton boyshorts from Target. They have some lovely, affordable lace options, but my favorite place to buy underwear is GAP. So soft and comfortable and they have such sweet patterns.

I feel like it is one of those things that you hate to spend money on but love when you have new ones! For the everyday wear, I always love Gap Body. Although I also shop at Target and Victoria Secret for the goods.

Target, from the Gillian O'Malley line.

a while ago american apparel had a 20 for $20 sale so i stocked up on cotton basics then. you didn't get to choose - they just sent you a bundle of boyshorts, briefs and thongs.

gap body also has really comfortable undies. :)

I pretty much only buy underwear from American Eagle/ aerie. I might be getting a little old to shop there, but I love how their bras fit, and it's fun and easy to pick up matching undies, too. They're pretty affordable.

Right now, Hanky Panky thong.
Most daily pairs are either Calvin Klein hipsters or Wacoal hipsters.

I'm with Eva - I love AE's bras! (their undies are great too). I still stock up at VS for the cotton basics and thongs. The older i get, the more particular i am about thongs though. They've GOT to be comfy.

Gap Body has the best sexy everyday panties. (in my opinion!)

Adore the VS Lacie...was the perfect pretty/sexy/comfy undie during pregnancy, and remains so now. But I sleep in Forever 21 stretchy boy shorts. Sexy (my husband loves them) AND cheap AND comfortable - the trifecta!

Another vote for Target. Though I love Honeydew Intimates from Nordstrom.

For thongs I like hanky panky which I buy at department stores.
I don't like sleeping in thongs though, so always change into granny panties or boyshorts. My favorite boyshorts are from Uniqlo. Check em out!

Right now a pear of polka-dot hipster undies from Lane Bryant the style is called the Dazzler! Super comfy spandex-y material. Lane Bryant has been my go too for undies for a while and Victoria secret or like Walmart in a pinch. But i'm a plus size lady LB has better fits for me.

Kirsten said...

I buy cotton bikinis from Costco...definitely more utilitarian than sexy.

I do also love Calvin Klein undies/bras, but they're a little out of my price range, normally!

Beth E. said...

My wardrobe is 99% pencil skirts so thongs (usually under panty hose) are mandatory. For day to day I prefer Calvin Klein or Hanky Panky thongs. If I'm wearing a flowy dress to an event I stick to Commando boyshorts. Today, red Hanky Panky :)

It's the cotton and lace ones from VS for me. I have been shopping there for years. Target makes similar ones I like, too but they don't last as long.

I am a British expat and have lived here for nearly none years, and I still stock up on underwear at Marks & Spencer's when I visit London. I think that's the go-to for most British women! Also I haven't found a better source for affordable black opaque tights so I buy them at M&S too. But in a pinch I like the lace-trim cotton briefs from Victoria's Secret.

Becca Gilgan said...

Been wearing Gap Body for years! I was especially indulgent when I actually worked there. ;)

Honestly, I only wear everyday undies with moderate to full coverage and my go to for them is the GAP. They have a variety of cuts and lovely patterns, are affordable and hold up well. Victoria's Secret also has lovely everyday cotton undies that are affordable too.

I"m a fan of the Gilligan O'Malley at Target and Barely There which I usually pick up at TJ Maxx or other stores like that but that you can find at department stores too. Think I might like Gilligan O'Malley more though!

Gap Body, Hanky Panky, and most recently Commando! It's a local Vermont brand and they are amazing. Highly recommend them.

I'm wearing the lacie thong by VS. it's similar to cosabella without costing an arm and a leg.

VS sends me two free underwear things a month - yes I get two free without purchase pairs a month! and no, I never pay for underwear anymore unless it's something special haha. VS rocks.

I get so many because I buy like pretty much my entire closet from there - clothes, shoes, bikinis, etc.

Carrie said...

I dream of the day I can afford nice underwear. The 5 for $20 signs at Target taunt me but I stick to idk Fruit of the Loop bikini style packs.

Aja Lake said...

I wear these nearly every day: http://bit.ly/1hxO0eA. They're THE BEST. With their cotton front and lace back, they're both sexy and comfortable. Plus, the lace doesn't create a panty line (even in skinny jeans), so you can wear them in place of thongs. My husband says he prefers the look of panties to thongs, so, with these, we both win!

I have a bunch of cotton panties from victoria's secret that I LOVE and have lasted me forever. Get them on the 5 for $25 sale (I think it's now 5 for $30). A little pricey, but such a good deal because they're comfortable and last forever. I also love Target panties. I only wear thongs if I HAVE to.

lisacline said...

Gap Body! At 26 I can't bring myself to buy VS neon zebra print lady garments any longer. If this makes me boring i'm ok with that. Gap Body makes the BEST bras and their very forgiving for curves! Side note, Urban Outfitters makes really beautiful stuff but it runs very small!

Amy said...

I like Aerie and VS. Aerie bras are the most comfortable and I like that you can find lightly lined ones there - feels like everything at VS gives me torpedo tits. La Senza is also great for stocking up on undies!

Victoria's Secret for boyshorts - usually online so I don't have to take my curious 6YOD and 4YOS into the store! They have 5/$26 sales but aren't as sturdy as they used to be. Also have done the Target Gillian O'Malley boyshorts with great success!

Today: black lacie thong.

Question: What is with all the ladies who wear undies to bed!?! When I was 6, my grandmother told me not to wear undies to bed because ladies had to let their bodies "breathe."

In the college dorms, I wore cotton boy-shorts to bed but my gyno reminded me that it was a bad idea because it can cause yeast infections - again, needing to let that space "breathe."

I use the freebie cotton thongs from VS for working out. Otherwise I stick to "the lacie" thongs from VS. Same as hanky panky but much less expensive.

Emily Weckesser said...

I can't believe no one's boasting about Forever 21's $2 "one size fits all" lacy thongs! They are IDENTICAL to the VS version at 1/6 the price and available in every color. At that price, I buy handfuls of them every time I'm there. They've held up well and are flawless under any pants/skirt/dress.

Laura said...

I think they're Hanes.

Definitely Target. I'd buy Gap Body if they were available in Canada, but they're not. As to thongs, you couldn't pay me to wear them.

I wear Victoria's Secret Body by Victoria hiphuggers every day. I don't know what I'll do if they ever stop making them. They are super soft, don't ride up, don't leave lines, and don't irritate my C-section scar (which still hurts even though it's two years old!)

American Eagle seems to have good 7 for $25 deals often, and they fit me really well (the bands don't cut in to me - super important to me!).

La Senza has okay ones, too. I'm not too picky about WHERE I get them, but the fit is really important!

At the moment, um, I am wearing none. Eek! But usually I am wearing Hanky Panky thongs. Low rise preferred. I only wear thongs -- I can't stand any bunching, and with the thong, I put it on and forget it. For exercise I actually still wear my old maternity thongs (from over 5 years ago!!!) that seem to last forever. Funny aside -- my 5-year-old asked me the other day why my underpants don't have backs, and I told her it was more comfortable for me that way and that it means you can't see them through my clothes, so my bum looks pretty (I have no idea why I said that). She looked at me in utter bewilderment/disgust and said, "Why do you need your BUM to look pretty?!? It's your BUM!" Good point.

I crave cotton for day to day wear, but I hate how ugly most cotton panties are. And uncomfortable on my ample behind! I actually buy these amazing Marks & Spencer Midi briefs in black every time I go back to England to visit my family. I buy like five packs; the clerks always think I'm insane! But they're SO flattering compared to most granny panties, and with black and a black bra I feel slightly sexier and less ratty, you know?

Don't judge but my favorites are from Aerie (the American Eagle underpants store, basically). So beautiful and comfy. I bought a bunch of lace ones that are 200% more comfortable than I thought and they are my go-tos now! Target is a good option too.

I have some Victoria's Secret ones that were gifted to me before I got married last summer and they're great, but I usually don't want to fork over that kind of money. Aerie or Target when I'm buying for myself. (I will note, however, that I do fork over the cash for bras from VS. They seem to be the only ones that fit me properly!)

I love hanky panky underwear. They are a bit expensive but so comfy and sexy.

Love thin lace thongs from Gilly Hicks! They're owned by A&F and used to have stores in CA, but now are online-only. They often have 7/$25 sales and their undies are way more comfortable than VS. They wear just like Hanky Panky or Cosabella or Eberjey, but are a much cheaper alternative!

Gap Body is also great too. During their sales I find lace thongs or lace boyshorts for $3-4!!

PS-Gilly Hicks also has super comfy cotton bikini/boyshorts—perfect period underwear!

For everyday I buy either boy shorts or a basic thong from target. But if I want lace I always go to Victoria's Secret! The prices aren't bad and the lace is such great quality!

Gilligan O'Malley lace-trimmed cotton boyshorts from Target. In violet. Super comfy and they are $4. Can't beat the price.

I really like the underwear at Gap Body. It's not too expensive and they have lots of different styles and patterns.

None! eep! I have been not wearing them for a couple of months unless i'm wearing jeans or going somewhere in a shorter dress/skirt.
is that weird? I just spent the summer not wearing them and now they're uncomfortable.... I haven't worn a bra for months either and it's sooooo nice. I think i'm alone here though

I will forever be in love with the aerie boy shorts. I'm not a thong person, I just want something super comfy. They are so soft and cute and luxurious. They cover my bum and never give me wedgies!

Victoria's Secret lace top bikini briefs! I go back and forth between those and the lace top "cheeky hipster"

Super second the Gap Body recommendations. For basic cotton they are so great... really comfy, soft, and flattering (and not too pricey).

I have been on the search for the perfect underwear for years. Finally found them at Lululemon. I Love these! $18 a pair but so worth it.

Bonds Hipster Boyleg is my everday underwear. I think Bonds is the Australian 'basic but not nanna-ish' underwear.

Soma Intimates have some very comfortable panties. I think they even have some made out of bamboo. They are my favorite out of my underwear collection.

I'm pretty active, so I LOVE Smartwool and IceBreakers boy shorts because they're wicking, super comfortable and you don't have to worry about smell! Plus, they're warm in the winter without being too hot in warmer weather.

I also really love Patagonia's underwear. The extra-wide waistband is the best - hands down.

aerie/american eagle boyshorts. soft, flattering cotton. easy :)

During the day I usually wear hanky lanky or honeydew thongs and at night I like honeydew boy shorts. I used to have really good luck buying my underwear at Loehmanns but they went out of business so now I go to nordstrom rack (I hate paying full price) or nordstrom/Bloomingdales when they have sales.

Target - thongs with the wide lace waistband. Super comfy and super affordable.

I think British women like Marks & Spencer for everyday, comfortable but pretty underwear, right? I remember my friend, who is from HK but living in NY, visiting me in London (I was studying there) and stocking up on them. So last year, when I went to the UK for the first time in a decade, I ended up going to M&S and bringing several pairs home! But these comments above we're helpful...next I'll try Gap. Thanks for posting!

Commando underwear are super popular and I've got a few pairs of the cotton ones that I really like :) I feel like everyone's already said that, but yes, they are good. Also gap makes some standard/more cheaply priced cotton ones that are nice (though they do get ratty more quickly). xxx

One more vote for Gap Body! I get my plain and my sexy underwear there.. their lacy tangas are comfy and totally RAHR all at the same time. Husband approved!

Calvin Klein or Gap body! Just started wearing Hanky Panky, they're a little expensive for me but I plan on buying a couple more!

I'm really big on matching my underwear or creating a style with my tops and bottoms, it just makes me feel really sexy after I shower in the morning. Right now I'm wearing a pair of Victoria's secret cotton bikini style(I love their string bikini's too) bottoms in neon and then a black (hard to describe) training style bra in black from GAP body. The neon and the black look really good together, I used to shop at GAP body because I got an employee discount and they have really cute pieces BUT I found that the bottoms weren't sturdy enough to hold up after washing a few times and VS bra's are more comfortable so I stock up during the semi-annual sale. Sometimes if I want something lace, I'll go to Anthropologie, Nordstrom's BP has some really cute lightweight bra's too...I'm pretty serious about my underwear.

PS- I totally agree on the GAP body lace too, I've just found their underwear doesn't have a long lasting quality...

Bloomingdales. I wait until they have one of those 20-30% -off-everything-sales and replace all my undies. I use calvin klein seamless and cotton undies.

Love Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Jockey, but can never pay full price SO go to Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and outlets. Otherwise Target for plain cotton panties that are actually small enough (I'd love to buy 5-packs from Hanes but I'm always swimming in them).

My adolescent girls and I go to aerie for our yearly underwear hoarding during the summer since we live overseas. They always have these great promos. My older daughter and I get the sexy lacy ones and my younger daughter is allowed the un-lacy ones. It's almost like going to a candy shop picking and choosing whatever "flavors" are tempting you!

I love Hanky Panky thongs. They were recommended to me when I was pregnant because they are one-size and I loved them before, during, and after my pregnancy. They are also made in the USA, which is a nice bonus.
