Bensimon sneakers

Bensimon sneakers—beloved by French girls everywhere—are back in stores! I love them so much, I can't help posting about them every year:) They are pretty and tomboyish with shorts and dresses, and they're comfy enough to wear everyday. Every city girl I know wears them, and they're perfect for the beach, too. Find them here and here, if you'd like. Spring is here!

I don't get how people can love these shoes, living in a walking city! I don't think I walk too much more than most NYers but I have never had a pair where the sole didn't wear completely through within maybe 5 weeks. I'm talking, like, bare-foot-on-asphalt worn through. It totally bums me out because I love the look of them so much!

Two years ago I tried putting those scuff stickers on the bottom of the shoe, to increase the durability, but they didn't adhere too well to the material. I am jealous of anyone who has better experiences with these shoes, and I'm still on my lifelong quest for a just-as-cute alternative! Who am I kidding, I'll probably cave and buy a pair of Bensimons this year just like I always do...

I bought these last year, but didn't love them in person! Maybe it's just me. But if anyone is looking for a brand new, never been worn, still in the box and dust bag pair, I have a size 6 in the grey available to sell for cheap!

Awesome. This is a great alternative to Tom's, which look amazing on everyone but me. How do people pull them off? Love the fact that you don't have to lace them...busy Mom on the go...!

I tried some on after your endorsements and felt like I was wearing clown shoes. They seemed big and floppy with that cap toe. Also I found that they have zero support. Back to my converse.

I'm French and I've been wearing them my whole life, and although I love them, I have to say they're not the best shoes if you're gonna walk a lot, because the sole IS pretty thin and will wear out fast. But that's why they're so cheap in France (about $33), you can get a new pair each year!

I bought a pair last year on your recommendation, Joanna. I ended up getting rid of them, though, since I managed to totally muck them up. It sorta works to throw them in the washing machine.. but I think mine were beyond help. I think this year I may buy a black pair!!

Very cute : )

I'm also really excited about the resurgence of Vans. In white or pastel colors, they would look so cute with summer dresses and cropped jeans. Bring on spring!

Not my speed, but just got a pair of Payless scrunch flats and they are surprisingly comfy and perfect for work!

i'm partial to my minnetonkas (just started wearing them again with sunny days ahead!) but may need an alternative.

I think they are so cute but the largest size is the equivalent of a 9.5/10 and my feet are embarrassingly large, a solid 10. I'm afraid even the largest size would pinch my toes. Sigh. Tall girl problems.

Wear Toms instead! They are so much more comfortable and you'll be doing some good at the same time. A win, win!

@Alexandra, you could try Supergas, which have the same vibe but a little more support. I also love good ol' Tretorns!

I bought a pair last year...but they don't come in half sizes and I sized up. Can't remember what size I bought, but they are too big. Darn!

Just posted about my chuck taylors. This is definitely the time of the year when I start to think about wearing sneakers with everything!

I have two pairs and love them -- one is four years old and just starting to look ratty! I put little arch-support insoles in mine, to make them more comfortable for walking.

Also... what WAS that on The Bachelor last night?! Chris Harrison was cracking me up

I am never impressed by such shoes. The canvas in these shoes starts to smell in the summer, they don't have good arch support and I feel it's a big waste. Joanne, don't your feet/shoes smell in the the summer when you walk around in these?

Just bought a pair and I love love love them. I have been wearing them even though it's still a little too rainy & cold.

the 41s fit you? they feel no more than a 9.5 to me and brutalized the back of my ankles :(

I remember you posting about these last year, but I don't care-- if you are posting again, it means spring is here! The Bensimon post should be an annual thing that marks the last harbinger of spring before the weather truly warms permanently.

George said...

Bought a pair of these last year per your post, and hiked from Barcelona along the coast to Rome. Added a sole insert (it was a lot of walking!), but these are my jam!

Nicki Marshek said...

Hooray! I tried to buy some last year but I was too late- they were sold out everywhere! It's funny that they're only available during spring and summer.

Joanna Goddard said...

stk, haha i love that (i feel the same way actually:)

Joanna Goddard said...

i really love bensimon, but i totally get your point that they definitely don't have much support. if i were going for a big hike or a really long trek, i would wear better shoes, but these feel great for just walking around town, hitting up the playground, wearing to the beach, etc....i really do love them! xoxoxo

Joanna Goddard said...

megan, yeah, i have wide size 10 feet and i wear the 41s and i find them super comfy. interesting about your ankles—i didn't have that problem, but maybe you could wear that foot tape? (unless that's not worth it:)

Marta said...

Hi! Bensimon are cute but I prefer spadrilles and Camper and Vialis sandals(two Spanish brands with very cool design and good material), their shoes are really comfortable and ok when you're going to the beach, the park, the city in the summer.

ha, this made me laugh because i'm French and all my foreign friends always say that i look 'sooooo French' when i wear these shoes :)They are a staple in my closet come spring and summer, i just wear them all the time. Cheap, tomboyish and colourful, the perfect combination!

I love my keds! I have a pair in navy blue and just bought an awesome pair in electric blue. I used to wear chuck taylors but I find the keds to be much more feminine and as a 30 year old mom of two, lets face it, I'm not as hipster as I used to be in my twenties :)

I have bright pastel pink Bensimons, and they're lovely! x

Samantha said...

I also totally love these and they are super comfortable, but the soles wear out so crazy fast. The last 3 years in a row I have purchased a pair for spring/ summer and they never make it through July. :(

I just started wearing the lace-up kind and LOVE THEM. And I’m really picky with my shoes!

I love these but they don't seem to make them big enough. Anyone know where I can get size 42?

I love them so much but am cursed (or blessed, depends how look at it) with tiny feet, I need euro 34….know any kids sizes, since you may have looked for Toby;) ?

I'm studying abroad in France and these shoes have just started appearing in stores! As another commenter noted, they aren't super expensive here. I may have to try a pair!

Funny, I just bought a new brown pair on eBay last week. Going to wear them to S.F. tomorrow.
Cheers to sneaker wearing weather.

P.S.
I especially like to wear mine with a tee and denim skirt.

I love my pair. I'm on my second one. I had to have my French friend ship me a pair because I wear a 35! Even that's still a little too big. SIGH.

I don't like them for long walks. I wore them all day in the city and it hurt a lot.

I bought some last year based on your recommendation. Once they broke in, they quickly became one of my favorite shoes. The only downside is that they look pretty terrible with socks. I end up going foot-commando. Gross.

Sarah said...

I love these but for some reason the colors I like (blue, gray) and my right-in-the-middle size (38) make it almost impossible to find them. And yes--they are lousy if you walk a lot--very thin-soled and they do wear out--but very good for biking! I also miss the old Converse Chuck-its which had a similar easygoing summer vibe...

How do you think they compare to Toms?

Tamara said...

I lived in France for a few years and was bummed to not be able to buy fresh Benismons every spring on my return to the States. I was also disappointed to discover that the American websites that sold them didn't have a very big selection of colors (and that they were so expensive!). I was happy to discover, however, that Americans can order them from amazon.fr (using your existing American amazon account, and even paying in dollars). It might be a little annoying if you can't read French to search for them, but it's still the same format as the US site, so just typing "bensimon" into the search window will yield a lot of results. There are way more sizes, especially on the higher end, and there are also lots of great neutral colors and special editions. I just ordered blue marine (navy blue) and carbonne (dark gray) lace-ups, and it worked out to be about 30 bucks a pair (with shipping and conversion from euros). Shipping takes a bit longer, but was only about 10 days to Southern California. Pas mal!

Might I suggest a more comfortable alternative: slip on sneakers. They trend started last summer with the fashion set but is huge now that winter is winding down. They are available at the higher end of the spectrum (Celine, Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Lanvin) to much more affordable options (Van's, Topshop, Zara).

So, last May I spent two weeks in France, and much to my surprise, all the girls were wearing Converse! I kept expecting to see everyone in Bensimons, but they were definitely in the minority. So funny.

I bought a pair this week on Amazon based on your prior recommendations. LOVE them in person! A great alternative to VANS (which hurt my heel somehow) and TOMS (which everyone wears) and CHUCKS (which I used to love in my twenties but are a bit too punk rock for me these days). Classy, cute and casual. Thank you!
