An astrology reading

Over the past year, Alex and I have booked dates through HowAboutWe, the dating and relationships site that helps plan offbeat dates for couples. Well, this past weekend, we went to Brooklyn to visit an astrologist. We did it just for fun, but then she went and told us something crazy...
As a HowAboutWe for Couples member, you browse their list of dates, book the ones you like, and go. They take care of all the details. We signed up for an hour-long couples astrology reading in Brooklyn...and had absolutely no idea what to expect.
As we headed up the stairs to her apartment, I have to admit, I was a little nervous!
Our astrologist, Deb McBride, greeted us on the third floor with cold glasses of water and our charts already written up. According to New York Magazine, McBride, "with her rosy cheeks, friendly smile and chintz-filled Park Slope walk-up, is probably the coziest astrologer in town; but she’s also one of the most academic."
We sat around the table together, as she explained our natal charts—which showed the locations of the sun, moon and planets when we were born.
Alex is a Scorpio, so she told him: "I find that Scorpios are salt-of-the-Earth people. They're loyal and deep. They're not shallow people by any means. They move through life and want to know what's at the very bottom and the essence of things. They don't look at things in an off-handed way. They make good investigators, good archeologists, good psychotherapists." Alex and I were impressed: She was dead on.
I'm an Aquarius, so she told me: "Joanna, you're an air sign, which is known for thinking, constant analysis. Trying to get the brain to calm down is one of Aquarius' challenges. Their brains move very quickly. The stream of consciousness is extremely fast. They sometimes suffer from anxiety." Again, she nailed it!
McBride told us about our relationship—"you can live together because your moons are compatible; you are highly empathic and sensitive, and it's very important for you to have time to vent and release tension"—but the crazy part of the session came at the end. She pulled out maps of the United States and looked at us seriously. "There is an attachment to California," she told us. "Joanna, your Saturn is New York—that means you can achieve things here, but there is a lack of balance. It's like always being on the treadmill. For Alex, he doesn't have any planets going through New York, which means he can be fine here, but you BOTH have Jupiter on the same safe place, which is in California." She said she wouldn't be surprised if we ended up moving there. And it's funny because, ever since our date, I keep daydreaming about heading west...her words really got into our heads!
Have you ever been to an astrologist? It's such a trip! I'm now recommending it to all my friends—you should totally try it! Thanks for the idea, HowAboutWe. We had the best time.

Overall, I'd highly recommend HowAboutWe for Couples. You can sign up for free and browse their creative dates in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and LA. If you don't live in those cities, you can still leave your email and they'll let you know once they've expanded to your area. BONUS: Get $50 off your first date through this link, until June 30th. And if you're single, here's a link for 25% off their dating site. Thanks so much, HowAboutWe!

P.S. Two more great dates: massages at home and fire-escape drinks.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the camp that you guys should pull up stakes and move to the Bay Area. Doesn't your sister live here? :)

Wow Joanna! Thanks for sharing! I'm getting goosebumps here. I've never been to an astrologer but I did have a spiritual reading done once at a holistic expo. She told that the guy who had broken my heart a few months prior wasn't the one for me. I was so shocked because I didn't give her any details about my life at all. It freaked me out a little bit because she was pretty spot on!

All the best in the house hunting.:) California sounds like a winner.

I am fascinated by this and immediately want to go to her! I am the one of my friends who can always guess people's star signs upon meeting them. It's half party trick half intution. Which makes sense for the intuitive Pisces in me! I love learning more about our star signs and I think there is much more to it than the bedside astrologer! Love this

I am a Scorpio and my husband is an Aquarius and her analysis was dead on for us too...want to go for a reading! Want to leave NYC but need to know where to head ;)

I think you guys would love living in California. Being closer to Lucy and her family, warm weather, relaxed vibe… All good things!

Renae said...

Wow! That is pretty freaky! Off topic question, but every time I see a full body shot of you I think you look like you have legs for days, as my grandma would say (and are in fabulous shape!) How tall are you?

OMGEE I woulda been so nervous too!! it's awesome that you guys were game for this! And lastly, we Californians would welcome you with open arms!! I am a so cal girl born & raised, but now live in Northern Ca, and love it!! I'm so happy to be raising our daughter here!

Okay, I'm sure it was cool and all, but couldn't she have found out all that stuff from looking at your blog?

I've never been to an astrologist, but my ex-partner and I went to a medium at Lily Dale in west New York. It's a spiritualist community near Chautauqua Lake where his family vacations. I wasn't expecting much, but I kept an open mind and it was fun to experience. She told us that our deceased loved ones had orchestrated our meeting. Even though I wasn't buying it, it was a sweet thought.

since you are now moving to california, i'm pretty sure you'll be moving to SF (or perhaps the peninsula where it's nice and warm). and i can't wait!

My son is scorpio and even though he is only 5-year-old, he definitely shows those qualities McBride suggested. I'd love to make an appointment with her when I'm in the city next time. I'd love the "a cup of jo" California version :)

She sounds fab! I do believe in astrology alittle but I have to ask this. Do you think she googled you guys before ou came so she could get most of her information from your blog?

I strongly associate you and your blog with New York but I would love to hear what living in the Bay Area would be like through your eyes.

Also, I love your Bensimons!

Fascinating! My husband and I are former East Coasters/New Yorkers, but haven't looked back since moving to L.A. (which surprised me so much!). We couldn't be happier here, and now I'm curious to know if there was something about Jupiter and CA in our charts too, ha. Thanks for sharing!

Some people like to argue that psychic and astrologers are nothing but super sensitive people that catch details about you.

I don't care.

I think it's like looking at a mirror and seeing things from a different perspective. Sometimes, when someone says they notice something about you that you didn't quite know it's super enlightening and helpful because now you know what's up with you.

It's like someone checking your hair or outfit from the back. You can kinda see but it's better when someone helps :)

Joanna Goddard said...

rachel, she probably could have, but she said she purposefully didn't look at my blog because she didn't want to form opinions before our meeting. i believed her:)

Joanna Goddard said...

roopika, good to know!!

Karelys, i was thinking the same thing—i was wondering if she could tell things about us when we walked in and just kept sussing things out. it's all so fascinating. i normally don't believe things like this at all, but we got really sucked into it:)

marni zarr said...

i love what karelys has to say. i am so intrigued and would love this as a date night with discussion afterwards over cocktails. i like the mix of academia and mysticism. it's all there, just depends how we choose to look at things.

I speak to an astrologer at least once a year, for additional perspecitive, or if I'm feeling in a rut and don't know which direction to go! I always find it to be an empowering and eye opening experience. If you are open to really looking deep within, it can be like a workshop on the self! I highly recommend Stephen Quong and Kristin Fontana, they are both excellent.

I am a lifetime professional astrologer and specialise in couples compatibility readings. I love my work as it creates greater harmony and understanding between people. I find that once a couple know all about each other's astro charts they become much more open and accepting, harmonious and connected with each other. Though I am in the UK I have many US clients - we work via Skype. If you'd like to know more see my website www.moonfeather.co.uk (not .com) or just email leticiaparmer@yahoo.com. Nice article.

Bianca Pardini said...

Although I haven't met you two personally, you guys totally seem like Bay Area people! Move to Oakland!!

Leti Q said...

Rachel, Astrology is an ancient and extremely fascinating art. There is no need to know anything about or meet a person whose chart I am doing. All the information is in the chart. I used to be on a radio show where I wanted to show people what Astrology is really about. So we invited listeners to write in with their date, time and place of birth (that's all the information an astrologer needs to draw up a birth chart). I would pick a random one from the mailbag and prepare their chart. The radio station invited them in and on the day of the show I would meet them for the first time and live, on air, would tell them all about themselves. They were always amazed at the accuracy and relevance. My only advice. If you do choose to go to an astrologer, go to a reputable one. You are welcome to ask me a question at leticiaparmer@yahoo.com.

I have to say, I recently tried out HowAboutWe for couples, and a month after I gave them my credit-card information to purchase one date, they started charging me a membership fee. The fine print reads that after you sign up for one date, your "free month long trial membership" begins... Then the membership automatically rolls over the second month and you're charged a monthly fee. Getting this membership cancelled is strange because the only contact information for the company anywhere on the sight is one customer service email. A month after the first round of emails to cancel it, I got charged again. Iapparently my account wasn't properly flagged after the first attempt. had to Google search for a phone number to contact them. The date was a lot of fun, but I didn't use the sight often enough to get accidentally charged an $18 fee every month. Eh... I know $18 isn't that much, but it was a pretty tricky way to get a membership out of me.

Hanh said...

My feeling about these kinds of "readings" is that they always say something that are generally true for a lot of people. For example I'm a Taurus, and everything she said about you is also true for me.

Physique, body language and demeanors are also very informative about a person. *shrugs*

California... such a nice thought.

Lana said...

Okay, so I don't mean to be a Debbie-Downer, but your life is laid out for the public eye. Just by browsing through your blog she knows you and Alex's bdays and that your twin sister is in California AND that you were heartbroken when she moved there. I think psychics are fun if you don't invest too much into them, (especially if you are in a vulnerable state).

My husband is a popcorn addict. Makes it every night. He's super nostalgic of a popcorn shop (no longer in business) he used to go to with his father as a child and talks about it all the time. I signed up for How About We after your last post on it and surprised him with a free tasting at a popcorn shop near us that we hadn't known about. He LOVED it! We both enjoyed tasting the flavors and picking out our flight of popcorn. S'mores flavor was a winner :)

Thank you!

Sheesh Beth E! So Rude! Joanna, I have been a reader for nearly 4 years and I honestly don't know how you handle all the rude comments!

Jenny said...

Beth E., there was nothing even the least bit constructive about your comment. If that's your opinion, it could have happily remained in your head and not rudely pounded out on your keyboard. At the very least it just sounds like Tomboy-type style is just not your thing. Oh well.

Joanna, I was actually going to ask where you got your jeans. So cute! They look perfectly relaxed without being too loose.

Megan M-R said...

What possesses someone to write something like that, Beth E.? WHO CARES. Get over yourself!

Emmy M. said...

My astrology philosophy is to believe in horoscopes when they're good, and try to sort of disregard ones with bad news. Ha! The reader that is ALWAYS spot-on for me is Katherine Merlin from Town & Country Magazine. It's absolutely insane how spot-on her predictions are. I always look at the fortunes for the other signs too, and none of them really make sense to me- only my sign does. They're available online! You should look at them!

Love this post! I'm an Aquarius too; I'm certain we'd get along just fine in real life:) You and Alex look so happy together!

My husband and I did the same HowAboutWe date for Valentine's day, and we loved it. Deb is amazing, so low key and intuitive and relaxed- it sort of felt like couples therapy. So glad you had a great time too!

Hm. Don't get me wrong, but both your lives, Joanna and Alex, are pretty much all over the internet. In a very open and sharing way. I could have told you everything the astrologist did, as could have most of your blog readers. Spiced up with a little Saturn here and a Neptun there.
I usually really love your blog, I was just flabbergasted that you didn't even consider her knowing all about you from the internet. I guess that's what I would expect from someone with a journalism background, right?

I saw Deb last fall for an astrology reading at a tumultuous time in my life. I love what Karlyes said - "It's like someone checking your hair or outfit from the back. i think astrology is super fun for entertainment purposes but i would never give it any credence beyond that. being a twin, i think it's funny when people get ascribed certain personality traits based on when they were born. my twin sister and i have some similarities but we are vastly different people. we were born 5 minutes apart. :)

kalex said...

I'm really into astrology and the zodiac, but I'm wondering -- did the astrologist know who you were before you came in, or did she just receive your birth dates? Because it wouldn't be hard to find out that your husband is a journalist (investigative), or that you deal with anxiety (from your blog posts).

Sorry, what a wet blanket thing to say! I still love the story, and think there's credence to this stuff, I'm just keen to know if she know who you were beforehand. :)

dobovo, thanks for your note! we relaly like HowAboutWe, but I can see why you were confused about the membership experience. I know HowAboutWe would love to hear your feedback on how this could have been more clear on the site itself. if you'd like, you can always reach them directly at couples@howaboutwe.com

here's a quick overview of how it works: HowAboutWe for Couples is a membership service. It's free to join and browse dates. Membership is $18/month and includes up to 75% discounts on dates, plus some dates are free dates every month. You receive a free 30-day trial when you book a date at the members' price.

hope that helps!!

Interesting post Joanna. I've always wanted to ask my quasi famous Uncle, who's a published Astrologist the connection between natal charts and twins.

I too have a twin sister, but we couldn't be more different. My fiancé laughs and thinks there's no way we could be related.

We live in the Bay Area. How about a year house swap?

Yes! Move to CA! My husband I are from Orange County but have been East Coasters (NYC and Boston) since 2002. We are finally moving back to CA in June. I really have loved living here but dude the weather kills me. With 2 kids now (3 year old and 8 months) I just want to be out every day.

SF is where I want to be but it's kinda ridiculous out there now. I feel like only the uber wealthy can afford to live in SF. Did you see the New Yorker article about the "parallel society" ?

Anyways, love your blog! Your husband looks like a teddy bear!

On a similar note, I once had to attend a feng shui meeting for work. It ended up being very interesting.
