Holiday idea: Making a family album

My friend Kendra's parents have a huge family album that they display on the coffeetable from Thanksgiving to New Year. "We all flip through it every day," she says, "Our childhood photos inspire conversation and great memories." So sweet, right? As part of a three-part series sponsored by Canon, we wanted to share some tips if you'd like to make one for your own family...
The red album belongs to Kendra's parents, and the black album is a new one that Kendra created. "These days, we don't always go back home for the holidays, so we want to start our own traditions," says Kendra.

"My mom includes things like her gingerbread-house recipe, which she makes every year," says Kendra. "So I'm putting in my sugar cookie recipe, and I'd love to include funny notes to myself, like 'you didn't serve enough food at the party! serve more savory food next year!" I love how Kendra also wrote a list of the presents her daughters got for Christmas—how sweet to remember what they were excited about each year.

Would you make an ongoing family scrapbook? Do you already? I love the idea of putting it out for everyone to leaf through and chat about. Any other tips or ideas of things to include? xoxo

P.S. Kendra's amazing holiday cards and pretty nail polish.

Love this idea! My family has been visiting this Santa Claus display in downtown Minneapolis for a couple of decades! We've even got pictures of my great-grandparents visiting as little kids! Photo albums are such a treasure. :)

this is the most beautiful idea! my parents have family albums under the coffee table in their living room - we love leafing through them when we're home for the holidays!

What a fantastic idea. I need to get into the habit of actually printing photos in general, as opposed to letting them live only online.

I love this! I started keeping a Christmas journal when I was kid, every year I'd write what our family did for Christmas and draw an illustration, and it would go back into the box of Christmas decorations at the end of the season. I love looking back at that now, it also helps the family remember what were that year's highlights.

I keep multiple albums. I made a baby book album for the 1st 2 years of our children's lives. I have an ongoing family album that I am a whole year behind with. I have an anniversary album of how we spent the day each year. I have a Christmas Day album that starts with stockings and ends with dinner. I have an album for each child's school experience (one pair of pages per year). And, I am making a huge album of our 6.5 months overseas last year. Our kids LOVE to look through them.

I don't scrapbook anymore, although I have a mass of supplies with which to do so, but this looks like a fun album, with all the other journaling and mementos.

she got it at pottery barn a while ago, and she said AI Friedman has similar books. xo

stephanie, apologies! the word "canon" won't show up if you have ad blocker on your browser.

For the last 5 years (since my son's first Christmas), I've kept a Christmas scrapbook and it's one of our favorite "decorations" each year. I always start the year with the Christmas photo card we send out and then my favorite pics of traditions old and new. Love having all the visits to Santa, cookie decorating, tree shopping, etc all in one place!

How wonderful to focus just one one time of year and have an ongoing book. Scrapbooking is time intensive, but I love the idea of just sort of keeping a journal of traditions and memories. Thanks!

Love this. Do you know how those Instagram photos were printed in that last image? I'd love to do something similar, especially with our baby's first Christmas. Thank you and happy holidays!

My husband, Rama, has been sketching our little family since my first son was born. I like to imagine that he's our family historian and that his sketchbooks are our history books.

I think you look at albums and reminice more than with online pictures. It would be fun to have all you Christmases in one album and bring it out evey year to look back and remember with the family.

Great idea! I'm going to print one up for next fall! [planning ahead?] We make favourite photo ornaments of our kids, bea and toby, each year and hang them on the tree: http://wp.me/p3S4I7-1sy. It's our "tree album" I guess. - R @ www.thelunchboxseason.com

I wish the commenter above (Carlin) would come organize my family's photos like that. I WANT to have those albums so badly but I can't seem to make the time to do it!

I've been married just over a year and it's been important for me to establish family traditions for our currently small but hopefully growing family. I love this idea and definitely plan to use it!

I LOVE this idea! I am not super crafty but I think I could pull this off. My first baby was born this September so I am feeling all mushy gushy this holiday season and it would be lovely to start this for our little family on our babies new Christmas!

Like everyone else, I have 1 trillion photos of my boys on my computer and don't have many of them printed.

Recently, I bit the bullet and printed a couple hundred and have been thinking about how best to put them together.

I like the idea of including notes here and there of small memories along the way.

Never thought of leaving it out as a coffee table book, I always tuck them away on a shelf :)

Thanks for the post.

I have been using the project life sleeves and format to create albums for our mini family. It's a good creative outlet that can be as crafty or digital as you make it.

This is a little late, but I hope the people who asked will check back and see this - those little prints (I'm pretty sure!) are Miniprints from Printstagram! http://printstagr.am/ I've been getting prints from them for a while and they are just the cutest things ever. The quality is really good, I think they're such a cool company. I signed up for their mailing list and their emails are just like ones your goofy friend would send. Anyway, hope this helps people who were looking for those prints!

I love the idea of a Christmas scrapbook! My mom bought a Christmas book years ago that has pages for photos, a list for presents and even a calendar so you can write a note of what you did each day in December! I love going back through it now that I'm older since she's been writing in it since I was a pre-teen :)
