Making love

Do you agree that "making love" is the grossest phrase? This video, of everyone saying "make love" in Woody Allen films, made me laugh out loud and very uncomfortable.

P.S. Annoying words, and Brit speak.

LOL - on man, I'm with you! "Making love" is right up there with "panties."

Sarah said...

hahaha I love that you said that! I totally hate the saying "making love!" Glad someone else does too :)

moist panties.

eh...it doesn't bother me so much. the song "sexual healing" gives me the heebie jeebies though.

"making love" and "lover" bleck! It took me forever to choose wedding reawdings because i refused to have the word "lover" spoken at my wedding ceremony.

I completely agree!! My husband has recently taken to calling sex "making love" and he doesn't understand why I think it's so gross and weird!! I almost always end up giggling like a pre-teen when he says it and he gets upset that I'm not taking his "sexy" seriously :) If he'd only just call it sex like an adult I wouldn't giggle!

La Vie est Belle said...

Totally agree . . gross . . . like the word "pleasure".
p.s. Woody Allen is a total creep.

yes!! so gross!

Absolutely with you on this one. I have a friend who insists on saying it and it gives me the heebs AND the jeebs every damn time.

i guess you have to be an old fool like woody allen to be saying this. lol this video is hilarious!

Hi There! said...

...i prefer 'making love' over 'screw'... well actually, i prefer 'sex' or the f-word (or any other word for that matter) over 'screw' lol

Astrid said...

haha, this is so funny, Joanna! i'm totally with you, it is THE grossest saying. it is just too smooth and also sort of old-fashioned. the Dutch equivalent ('vrijen') is just as bad (i literally cannot say it). ICK! :)

Kathy said...

Hahahaha! "Making love" is such an awkward phrase - especially if used before saying "I love you" to someone. On the other hand, I find the phrase "I have taken a lover" wonderful, and have tried to incorporate it into everyday conversation.

Lauren said...

Huh. It has absolutely no effect on me at all. I think it's actually kind of sweet. So, what do you say?

Lauren said...

Update: hearing woody Allen say it a bunch of times DID gross me out. He's gross to me. Mostly because of the whole I married my kid thing.

k. said...

The phrase "making love" doesn't bother me, but the way Woody Allen say sit does.

Lana said...

Hahaha! Kathy, that is awesome.

Meg said...

i thought i was the only one who thought this! i've never actually acknowledged to others how much this phrase grosses me out, but it really does. i have never found it romantic or sensual, just gross.

Lana said...

Sometimes I just say stupid stuff to Jim to see what kind of reaction he will have. For instance, it's not unusual for me to say, "Hellooooooo, lover." Also, I sometimes quote lyrics from songs, (Especially Boyz to Men's "I'll Make Love to You" and Faith Hill's "Let's Make Love") just to see what happens. Nothing is more hysterical than the look on his face when I suggest that we "make love. All night long. Until all our strength is gone"
PS: Moist. That's a word that grosses me out.

Patricia said...

I love it. I think it's old-fashioned, romantic, and just plain sweet. Gets me every time.

Preach! Always assumed I was the only person averse to the (supposedly romantic & mushy) phrase!

Totally!! Since we're not married and I feel weird saying my boyfriend (we've been together 7 years and are well into our 40s) we always joke and call each other luvah like the SNL skit.

Andrea - Under a Blue Moon said...

I honestly thought I was the only one that is uncomfortable with the phrase. I feel so awkward when I say it (so I don't). I much prefer the succinct "having sex."

Jo said...

How about "faire l'amour"?

Caitlin Scott said...

Wanna know something weird? I used to hate it, and laughed at it when I heard it. 'Who says that sincerely??' I thought. But then...I had this boyfriend. And he would say it, very pleadingly and sexily, and it became my favorite way to say it. Now I'm with someone else, and it doesn't feel right to say anymore. The magic vanished.

Caitlin Scott said...

Totally, girl. Said by the right person and in the right tone, it's hugely awesome.

Meadow said...

I hate it too!!

Alex Messina said...

"Making love" is the worsttttttt phrase. So glad others hate it too!

Gina said...

In my both languages we use "make love" when we're talking about sex with love, so it's not a gross phrase for anyone. "Hacer el amor/ fer l'amor" (spanish/ catalan) is the sweetest phrase. When we want to sound gross we say "follar" ("to fuck"), sorry to be so explicit. Well, you see, it's different in every language/ culture. ;)

poisonwood said...

ugh definitely! It's a bit too schmultzy for me!

Jacqueline said...

i'm with you! the phrase "making love" always, ALWAYS makes me think of that Will Ferrel hot tub skit (lu-vahhhs...) therefore I cannot say it or hear anyone else say it without snickering and feeling grossed out.

Jesse said...

so gross!

Sarah Zindt said...

Totes! So creepy, I was only able to get through about half of this video.

rachael_2 said...

I think it's sweet. Unless it's said on a soap opera, though.

Anamaria said...

I agree with the minority here: it IS gross when Woody Allen says it, or when it is used outside the context of declared love... but married, it is sweet! Especially when that love creates a child!

haha. this made me laugh, but i think it's nice.

Faire l'amour sounds sooo much sexier!

SHUDDER.

La Vie est Belle said...

I do agree that in French it sounds pretty nice. :)

Whenever people use that term, I always think of a line that was in one of the Harry Potter books.. There's a song called A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love, and since I knew about HP before I knew about sex, that is what I associate "making love" with. Not cute.

I am French and I feel the exact same about "Faire l'amour" as you guys feel about "make love" I think it's theeeee worst ! I think I would actually get embarrassed if I had to say it! hehe but glad you guys like it!

Paige Elizabeth said...

I never thought about it until now, and now after watching the video, the phrase seems to have lost meaning. Like when you say the same word over and over again until it doesn't even sound like a word anymore.

cascadiadays.com said...

I thought I was just immature but yeah that phrase sickens me. Yuck! Creepy.

jowojo said...

I may be the extreme minority here... but not only did this make me laugh so hard, it made me realize that I don't know if I've EVER said this and I am going to try it out tonight.
Also, my boyfriend of 10 years is going to now officially be my "lover."
(long time reader, first time commenter!! Love your and Alex's writing!)

bisbee said...

I'd rather say "have sex" or "f**k"...short, sweet and to the point! DH says "getting close"...don't know where that came from! I don't love it, but then again, we didn't meet until we were in our early 50s, so there's a lot of history on both sides!

Alyssa said...

I definitely don't love the phrase. It just sounds sleezy to me and unsincere. But this video made me giggle.

bunchofbeets said...

Oh my god, I could't even finish watching the clip it was so awkward. I have always hated that phrase....something about it is so, I don't know, just creepy. Bleck.

Maren said...

I really hate the word 'orgasm'. It's a huge turn-off when used while 'making love'. :)

Ms. Shypoke said...

It just strikes me as a little cheesy.. but doesn't bother me much.. Loved the song "feel like making love"...lol

Isabelle Lou said...

Ooh I don't know, when Bruce Springsteen sings 'me and Crazy Janey were making love in the dirt...' in Spirit in the Night - that's pretty much the sexiest thing ever...

Maria said...

I'm French, and my friends sometimes say "faire l'amour" speaking of a one night stand, which I dont understand at all! I'm ok with it as long as it's with a lover!

And I think in French we miss a common phrase like "have sex" or "fuck" so I sometimes say "faire du sexe" to feel understood but that's completely improper. (we can say "baiser" but that can sound really gross!).

NeatoKeen@Etsy said...

I actually prefer "making love" to "having sex" or "doing it". Maybe it's an age thing. I'm in my 50s. I hope it's OK that an old fuddy duddy LOVES your blog! xoxo

cynthia cidade said...

it is only a woody allen phrase, i don't think if is awkward or cute...
is vintage!!! Ha!

Truly an awkward phrase. But coming out of Woody Allen's mouth adds a whole other level of ickk!

Agree, it's a horrible phrase.

Too funny!

Yikes, that's hard to watch! haha. I'm reading a book that takes place at the turn of the 20th century, and they use the phrase "make love" to mean showing adoration or flirting. It freaks me out every time!

Haha, ever since I read Susan Monk Kidd's (I think that's her name) "The Mermaid Chair," ( I was 13 or so) where she says "make love" almost every other page, I hate it! It just stood out to me so much and felt so weird and gross and fake and whiny and... lol ugh I hate it! Luckily no one's every tried to say it seriously to me!

Aidel Knaidel said...

I can't watch this video-Woody Allen nauseates me. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Lana, I love this, but how can you possibly do that without cracking up, thus ruining the joke??? I could never pull it off.

To my husband this phrase is the ULTIMATE weirds—but I think in some more swoony moods it seems more appropriate than just "having sex". (think maybe Rachel McAdams saying it in The Notebook?)

nina | itsazooatthezoo.blogspot.com said...

I'm so with you, pleasure is creepy too!

nina | itsazooatthezoo.blogspot.com said...

I agree, totally creepy and gross. It was ruined for me when my mother used it during her "sex talk" with my sister and I. That was the phrase she used, over and over again, while explaining all the details. Grody!

Michelle Ash Latham said...

Me too! I ended up just omitting "lover" from some because I liked the rest of the text so much -- but I just couldn't have "lover" read at my wedding either!

LOL! Ick!!!! What a horrible, cringe-worthy phrase. I didn't think I minded it at first, but it sounds so awkward!

Carolyn said...

Totally agree. Equally as creepy (although I feel guilty picking on him!) my uncle used the phrase "cherished lover" to describe my aunt when she passed. I was like OMG why can't he just say beloved wife? I mean I get it, and I am an adult.. but really? Miso childish.

HA! Yes! When I was a kid and got the birds & the bees talk, I couldn't stop giggling whenever my parents said 'make love." So I made up "ML" to stay instead. My entire family just said "ML" my entire childhood. I'm so glad to hear other people think it's creepy too!

i am here to give testimony of how i got back my husband, we got married for more than 9 years and have gotten two kids. thing were going well with us and we are always happy. until one day my husband started to behave in a way i could not understand, i was very confused by the way he treat me and the kids. later that month he did not come home again and he called me that he want a divorce, i asked him what have i done wrong to deserve this from him, all he was saying is that he want a divorce that he hate me and do not want to see me again in his life, i was mad and also frustrated do not know what to do,i was sick for more than 2 weeks because of the divorce. i love him so much he was everything to me without him my life is incomplete. i told my sister and she told me to contact a spell caster, i never believe in all this spell casting of a thing. i just want to try if something will come out of it. i contacted traditional spell hospital for the return of my husband to me, they told me that my husband have been taken by another woman, that she cast a spell on him that is why he hate me and also want us to divorce. then they told me that they have to cast a spell on him that will make him return to me and the kids, they casted the spell and after 1 week my husband called me and he told me that i should forgive him, he started to apologize on phone and said that he still live me that he did not know what happen to him that he left me. it was the spell that he traditional spell hospital casted on him that make him comeback to me today,me and my family are now happy again today. thank you traditional spell hospital for what you have done for me i would have been nothing today if not for your great spell. i want you my friends who are passing through all this kind of love problem of getting back their husband, wife , or ex boyfriend and girlfriend to contact traditionalspellhospital@gmail.com. and you will see that your problem will be solved without any delay.
