Four reader makeovers

A couple weeks ago, I asked if anyone would like a glasses makeover from Lookmatic. We were amazed to get more than 500 responses! Everyone was so funny and cute that it was almost impossible to narrow down the list. But in the end, we invited four women—Jen, Bridget, Caitlin and Roselyn—to spend a girly morning in Brooklyn.

Want to see the "after" shots?
We were lucky enough to hang at Sunday Suppers, an event studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. (You might have heard of their amazing cooking classes.) Look at that view!
We chatted and ate pumpkin yogurts and pastries...
...did hair and makeup (don't you always half fall asleep when you're getting your hair done?)...
...and finally we chose glasses. Lookmatic has tons of different colors and shapes, so it was cool to watch each woman find a pair to fit her personality.

And, finally, here are the after photos!
Caitlin, a comedian from Queens, was bubbly and adorable.

Fun facts: "I love watching 'My Grandmother's Ravioli' on the Cooking Channel and one day I wish to own an leather jacket. Also I love babies. Baby animals, baby humans, whatever I can get, I will hug them all."

New glasses (Kitty): "I can't wait to wear them all the time, they are just so fun and perfect. I would have never had the guts to pick them on my own, but the entire group was so fun and supportive."

Also, Caitlin's final reconstructive surgery for her preventative double mastectomy is this Saturday, so we will be thinking of her! She also has an awesome docu-series called "Screw You Cancer" that's now on Glamour.com.
Jen is actually a speech therapist from Dallas, but she was visiting New York with her husband and son. She was warm and wonderful to chat with.

Fun facts: "I love hanging with my six-year-old son. He’s really into outer space and describes everything as 'as big as Jupiter.' Every year my husband and I do a trip just the two of us. We went to Barcelona this year. I’m also a runner and run the Dallas marathon every couple years. Afterward I get margaritas, chips and salsa. Then go home and take a big nap."

New glasses (Bel-Air): "This new pair is wider for my face shape. I love the red color. They’re great everyday glasses."
Bridget is an environmental attorney who lives in the West Village. She was fun and friendly and had a great tomboy style.

Fun facts: “I like trying new restaurants with friends and my sister and brother. One of our go-to restaurants is I Sodi, where I always get the onion pasta—it sounds boring (just pasta and onions) but it’s so, so amazing and savory. I also like reading novels and just finished The Flamethrowers."

New glasses (Bel-Air): “My old glasses were too tame, and I was looking for something with more pop. I love the blue color."
Roselyn is super sweet administrative assistant from Queens with a megawatt smile.

Fun facts: "My husband and I love traveling and are hoping to go to France soon. Right now I'm reading Love in the Time of Cholera for the third time; every time I read it, it’s different. I also like baking; I’m going to make oatmeal cranberry biscotti tonight."

New glasses (Uncleonard): “I wanted something classic yet sexy. These are fun but neutral enough to wear anywhere, even to work.”
A big thanks to the stylists who helped—Kendra, Suzy and Reagan (pictured here in Lookmatic glasses, too).

Don't the women look fantastic??? Thank you so much, ladies—and thanks again, Lookmatic!

That's what I thought too since I read the series and was confused.

To whoever owns that green Fjallraven bag--I have the same one (same color too)! It's the best, right?? Picked it up in Sweden this summer and I feel so fancy carrying my school things in it.

What in the word is going on with those under eye strips during the "makeovers?" Why don't I know about these?!

I love the Bel Airs and I've tried a couple of times to do the at-home try-on, but it always says "out of stock". :( In fact, I'm looking for glasses and have pretty much given up on Lookmatic because all the styles I like are out of stock.

Oh, gosh! How cute are these girls? (And you with all of the stylists?) What an awesome gift, Joanna!

Caitlin is amazing. She's very brave and very smart. We are so lucky to live in a world where we can prevent ourselves from getting disease and even cancer. I'm so impressed with her. Her feature at Glamour is inspiring.

Great story and beautiful girls! Everyone looks wonderful! Thank you for providing such great content!

I love LookMatic, but as a long-time glasses wearer, I have to wonder -- do they offer an anti-glare option?! It doesn't look it...:/

She has (temporary) spacers and will be having silicone implants in (presumably this Saturday) to complete the reconstruction, from what I understand after watching the series. Brave woman with an awesome and inspiring attitude- Go Caitlin!

I love Lookmatic! I remember buying a pair when you first, first mentioned them, back when they were Spex Club (: You should definitely do more reader makeovers in the future because this looked like a ton of fun. I wish I could have gone but I probably would have been crying the entire time after meeting you! haha. Anyway, the "Bel-air" is definitely my favorite pair, they are a perfect fit on Jen!

Everyone looks great! I'm actually debating between a few Lookmatic glasses right now so this post came at the perfect time. And makeovers are way too much fun :)

I would actually love to get in contact with Bridget, if possible. I'm in law school for environmental law and I would love to hear how it is being an environmental attorney in New York.

Yay! Thanks for sharing. I will be adding that Ruby Woo to my Christmas list. And I just found you on insta. :) You're incredibly talented.

Was it just me or did anyone else think that the first photos are the "after" photos? They already looked so great to begin with. But later with the styling, the difference was obvious. I would have liked a little advice on how to pick out flattering frames for face types. I always seem to fall back to some tried and true looks which can be a little dull and perhaps not as flattering as they could be.

Louise said...

Oh, I agree with the comment just above mine! Was just going to say that these women were perfectly gorgeous in the "before" photos! Yes, they did look great afterwards, but are so darling as they are!

Angela M. said...

So neat to give women a day of pampering! Wonderful post! Side note: can we get the dets on Kendra's top? BEAUTIFUL!

Orla said...

Katie, I was just thinking the same??! The girls look great but I reeeeeeeally want to know how to stop my smokey eye from becoming coal-cheeked! ;)

Joanna Goddard said...

i think those eye thingies were to catch any eye makeup that would fall down on their cheeks. such a great idea, right? i've also heard that it works to put loose powder on your cheeks before doing your eye makeup and then you can just brush the powder (and eye makeup smudges) off after you finish doing your eyes. hope this helps!! (suzy the makeup artist is such a genius with this stuff:)

domonique matthews said...

When you first posted about this makeover I was really wishing i wore glasses! now that i know you got to not only spend the day getting all made up and a rad new pair of glasses, but you also got to do it in the sunday suppers studio, I'm super jelly!! these women look great. the red frames are my fave. what a treat! any others joanna? one for petite women from CA perhaps?
