Ballet is tough.

Have you guys heard of city.ballet? It's a twelve-part online documentary series about New York City Ballet, narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker. Each episode is about 6 minutes, and I watched them all in one blast last night. You hear from apprentices who are trying desperately to get into the company, corps de ballet members who are hoping to stand out, soloists who feel stuck in the ranks and principals feeling all eyes upon them. It's inspiring and fascinating, and another example of how it's hard to make something look easy.
(A bunch of little ones auditioning for the school! Those little bellies!)

P.S. Toby taking ballet.

My little girl, now 11, has studied ballet for eight years. I'm not a dancer, but I'm convinced that it is one of the best things for children. It has brought her such joy, confidence, poise, and strength. I love watching her dance.

I took ballet for eleven years, and it became such a part of who am I. I am still subconsciously aware of my posture, small movements, and little muscles I used to not know I even had. I am grateful for my training and miss it all the time. I can't wait to watch this! You danced for a while didn't you, Joanna (or did I make that up...)?

If you love this, you MUST see the documentary "First Position." It follows young ballerinas from different cities trying to make it. Beautiful movie, and it's available on Netflix streaming!

My 5YOD is in her second year of ballet, and she will do it until she decides she doesn't want to anymore. It brings a smile to her face and we practice the positions in the kitchen (she teaches them to me. I allegedly quit ballet at the age of 4 at the first lesson). Does Toby still take classes?

jenny, yes, i danced for quite a while, until i was at the end of high school. i loved it so much. this series was such a flashback!

collette, that is SO adorable!!!! toby only took a trial class, but we would love to have him take a full session. he's in school right now, so i'm not putting him in any classes at the moment, but maybe in the summer!!

Those little bellies and big eyes!! Adorable. Is Toby still taking ballet? He could go to college on a dance scholarship like Rahm Emmanuel!

My 2.5 year old daughter also takes a ballet class. I never would have considered it for her but there is a studio in our building and she was fascinated by the ballerinas so why not?
I am SOLD on the value of it now. My little girl who lagged in motor development and was hesitant to try new motor skills is now strong and well balanced. It has impacted her life so positively.
And, I swoon every time I see her in dressed in her tiny leotard and tutu with her hair in a miniature bun!

Well, I was just gonna check out one episode to see what you were talking about... and now I can't stop watching. I wish I had kept up with my dance classes when I was a kid. I don't expect that I would have been part of a company or anything, but I love to dance. It's just more like the "funky chicken" and the "sprinkler"... eh. Still got it! Thanks for sharing!

Joanna, I LOVE how interested you are in ballet. :) Where does this interest come from? We you a dancer before? I think I follow your blog the most out of any that I follow, and the last few posts on ballet stuff made me smile. :)

I took ballet for fourteen years and miss it beyond words. Dancing taught me so much growing up and really shaped who I am today. I love how this documentary focuses on all levels of the company.

I quit ballet the first day..lol. My my mom signed me up when I must have been about 5. I was a tomboy and did NOT want to do the dance thing. She told me if I wanted to quit after trying it, I could. Well, about 1/2 way through the lesson the teacher was trying to push my feet into a wider stance.. I told her they couldn't do that.. She said, they could.. I said "I quit".. she said "you can't quit".. I marched over and sat down beside the accompanyist and said "I just did."

I took ballet for ten years and my mom was a dancer. She was invited to audition for the Rocketts. Ballet is a lot of fun but very difficult! It's not for the weak when you get into the higher levels.

Can't wait to check this out. I've started doing the barre method...it is much harder than I thought! I have a new found respect for ballet dancers.

I love all your documentary suggestions! It's always fun getting a gimps into a world that I'm not familiar with. Although, in a previous life I'm pretty sure I was a ballerina

Hi Joanna! Thanks for sharing this...I'll definitely check it out. I took ballet for 9 years, stopped when I was 12 years old, and got back into it 20 years later. It's like I never stopped. Everything came back to me. Thanks again for sharing:)

I took ballet for 15 years and I was mediocre at best but it completely shaped my life. Best decision I... was forced into by my parents as a kid but ended up loving :)

The only thing more cute than little kids in dance outfits is little kids in dance outfits who aren't very good at dancing -- it's just the sweetest thing! :)

My former boss's son started in ballet at 4 or 5 and is now in the corps de ballet with the NY City Ballet after attending the School of American Ballet. I spotted him in a couple of shots in City Ballet. Sure wish he was one of the featured dancers though!

Me, I only took ballet for a few months and thought the best part was going to Dairy Queen for ice cream cones afterwards!

If I were to pick any career in the world I would have picked dancing. SJP and ballet it's a perfect combination for me so thanks a lot for sharing this. It's great inspiration for every other career.

As someone that danced for over 14 years I can definitely tell you ballet is extremely difficult. Not only on your body -- I'm 20 with knees and joints that are nearly destroyed -- but on your psyche as well. It's constant competition, constant pressure and a ridiculous amount of body insecurity. Do I love it still? Absolutely. Would I ever subject my children to the things I went through? Definitely not. There are obviously some benefits, I have great posture and I learned a lot of valuable things, but I sometimes can't believe the things I put my body through and how close I got (and watched other girls get) to seriously hurting themselves. Just my thoughts!

This made me remember back to when I took a dance class when I was very young and quit because I was afraid of the tap dancers! Ha! So odd. My fiance are getting a good laugh out of that story right now!
