Have a wonderful fall weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? We're planning to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and are also starting to decorate our apartment slowly but surely. (If anyone knows where to find a nice children's bookcase, I'd love to hear!) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun posts from around the web...

Would you read the Kate Middleton book? I love her.

(Although this made me laugh.)

Pretty shop based in Maine.

The new baby smell is real.

Why sugar and salt are delicious together.

A trick for catching burglars.

Great fall boots.

A tumblr devoted to Dustin Hoffman.

Nibble pan is a funny idea.

A Jeopardy snafu.

Awesome 8-year-old gets sexist books removed from bookstore. (And, dude, look at those books!)

Fudge walnut oatmeal cookies.

Gorgeous nail colors.

Nadeau has pretty, whimsical wooden furniture that would probably work great for a kids bookshelf. Xx

We have decided to go for book slings - takes up way less space and you can put them a toddler level (and choose whatever material appeals to you!)

Great links, as always. Those sexist kid books made me cringe! "How to Say You're Sorry," "How to Keep Stuff Secret" for girls?! Aaaaahhhh! Awesome 8-year-old though. Also? I enjoyed that article on the sweet & salty stuff.

Those pictures are lovely, they make me need to go hiking through autumn leaves and I think I'm going to make those cookies right away
I'm not sure what you're looking for in a children's book shelf but I had a normal, tall one like a Billy with different categories or books and toys on each level with old and precious things at the top unreachable.

Our tip for our 3 year olds and 4 year old: Always personalize in upper case b/c they can recognize the letters earlier/better and they get really jazzed about seeing their own names

The Kate Middleton article really made me laugh! Even though I do love her too I don't think I could be asked to read the book... ;-) This weekend we'll be hanging out in London, meeting some friends for lunch and just spending family time. Hope you four have a great one!

Glad they've finally given scientific evidence to the validity of the new baby smell! There really is nothing like it. My baby boys got sniffed a lot. LOL! We're hoping to head to the annual apple festival in town tomorrow after the boys soccer games are finished. I'm really excited - fall weekends are the BEST!!

HUGS!

I bought this a few years ago for my daughter (now 4) and have been very pleased.
http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/madison-3-shelf-bookrack/?pkey=dbookcase&
I specifically like how it's slimmer than the standard bookshelf (5.5 inch, those extra 7 inches or so are important in our nyc apartment!), wall mounted, and most importantly that kids can choose books by looking at the cover (as opposed to reading the title on the spine, or having to pull them out to see the cover).

We purchased this walnut and white bookcase from allmodern.com. We love the quality construction, the affordable price ($250!), and the versatility (you can stand it vertical or horizontal; we have it horizontal so tiny hands can reach the top shelves!) It's great for a child's room, but has adult style, and the brown and white fits with the mid-century aesthetic of our home.

There's a lot of sexism in toys too, my Goodness. Just look at Playmobil sets, see what they offered for boys and for girls, you'll be amazed (and sad I hope)

Curious - what do you love about Kate Middleton? I feel there are so many more interesting people out there to exclaim over, it seems pretty meaningless to say "I love her" .. sort of like saying "I love those red nails" or "I love that cheddar biscuit" .. and normally I like your taste in quotidian things like those. But Kate Middleton is a person, and for people, I think you could do better. Needless to say, no, I won't be reading the book.

Sara said...

Also, to clarify: I didn't mean I ONLY like your taste in biscuits and nail polish. I love the cultural and creative things you curate from around the web -- which is why I come here in the first place. I just find the KM interest a bit puzzling.

Hi Joanna! I was loving the ikea picture ledge shelves to use for books, but found making them was both cheaper and customizable. Plus it takes up no floorspace and is really a piece of art once you add all the colorful books. I have the EASY DIY on my blog. its by far my most popular post, partly because it was featured on brooklyn limestone:)

I think people are so intent on making men and women equal they are devaluing us as women. Those books are generalizations, yes, but sexist?! Come on. We are different anatomically, emotionally, and yes, generally we like different things. There are always the exception. I was the Tom Boy as a small girl and I am in no way offended by these books. Teach our girls to value their womanhood, not try their whole life to be men!

I actually have to agree with you guys. I can understand someone saying "I like KM's style" (it doesn't appeal to me, but I can see how someone might feel that way). I personally find the public fawning over this woman disturbing for one reason: she's never had a job. It is 2013 and this woman basically graduated from university and then spent six years going to nightclubs while waiting to marry. She did not volunteer somewhere or take a job that interested her. I just find it so upsetting that in this day and age a woman like this - albeit a pleasant and pretty one - gets so much attention, instead of women I can think of who have set up international health organizations in their 20s, are doing cancer research, working to understand climate change, etc. KM buys nice clothes with a $100,000 annual style budget. What else? Help me in this!

Hey there assuming you saw the bookshelves from Bookshop in Oakland when you saw their site. They are beautiful and well made in person and great for little hands to grab books themselves. I have one at my bedside but I want to get three in a row for our little guy's room.
