Amy Poehler's summer job as a teenager

For this week's New Yorker, Amy Poehler wrote a short essay about her summer job as a teenager: scooping ice cream at Chadwick’s, a local parlor that specialized in sundaes and giant steak fries. It's a sweet read, if you're a Poehler fan.

What odd jobs have you had? I’ve been a snowy-driveway-shoveler, pizza maker, newspaper delivery girl, coffee shop barista, LSAT tutor, receptionist, car washer, unpaid intern and babysitter (for $2.50/hour, that’s how old I am!!).

Plus, just for fun, two more funny photos:
(How psyched are you that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting the Golden Globes for the next two years?)

P.S. 16 celebrity yearbook photos, Amy's wise words, and how everyone has a wobbly path to success.

Too many jobs to count! Babysitter, barista, au pair, dog walker, bookkeeper, AA, salesgirl, amusement park ride operator... and that was before finishing college and having "real" jobs!

From my teenage years: babysitter, barista, sales person at a shoe store (that lasted two whole days), dishwasher at a pizza parlor (again, another two days), tutor, and I worked for NASCAR for a summer in their suites, serving food. I remember a lot of baked beans and wearing a checked vest. I'm laughing remembering it now.

In high school I worked at a tanning salon and once had an elderly lady call me into her room to help her with the bed, and when I walked in she was buck naked. Buck. Naked. I also sold tickets at a racetrack, despite having zero interest in stock car racing. This became apparent after I made a famous NASCAR driver buy a ticket to get into his own race (I had no idea who he was and still don't). I only found out about it because he thought it was funny and told the boss. I also painted commemorative NASCAR wine bottles (oh my god, I'm noticing a theme), worked in a greeting card shop, taught gymnastics, sold art supplies, taught children's painting classes and finally found my calling as a floral designer.

this is so timely because sunday I was travelling through my hometown and we decided to eat dinner at the pizzeria I used to work at (ages 16-22). I did lunch hours, back of house, front of house - I told DD, age 5 that I used to mop those floors and clean those bathrooms. She said "Gross!" but in 10 years that may be her, itching for some money :). I was also a barista, babysitter ($1 per hour per kid = $3 an hour) and later in life I worked in bookstores until I launched my career.

I was a camp counselor. It was an outstanding, amazing, so fun I could die job. However, I think it was more akin to volunteering as I made around $1200.00 for 9 straight weeks of work with only 20 hours off per weekend.

Worst job ever was a college 4-month stint at Old Navy. I got fired!!

$2.50/hr for babysitting?! Truthfully the cheapest I have ever charged was $10.00/hour, though it's typically $11-$12 for me, and no parent I've worked for has every batted an eyelash. This may be because of the area I live in in the west coast though!

I used to get paid $1.00/hour for three kids way back in the day. Totally ridiculous for what I had to put up with.

Love this. babysitter // dog walker // dog washer // t shirt designer // and the best one yet, with the worst salary ... mama :)

Apparently, that "BOOM" just erupted in my face.

When I was babysitting, we made .50/hr. Of course, I'm your mother's age (approx.)!

It's ridiculous the amount of jobs I've had before and during college. I made shakes and burgers at a little fast food joint, was a sales associate at two different retail stores, tanning salon assistant (I'm the whitest person ever!), worked at a movie theater, deli clerk, worked at a bookstore, worked at two different factories during college - one where I soldered lighting fixtures (I met my husband here, ha ha) and the other where I put together garbage disposals, worked at a spa, work-study student at a library, and bussed dishes at a fine dining restaurant. I like to think I'm multi-talented :)

Ha, that's a cool list of jobs. I recently bought a beautiful bracelet with inlaid turquoise from a Native American artist down in Arizona, who, in addition to being a jewelry maker and metalsmith, had also been a teacher, bus driver, and scientist of some kind. It's amazing, the windy paths some people go on throughout life!

Places I have worked, besides babysitting and shoveling snow: a Montessori day care, YMCA summer camp, Target, a Special Collections archive at a library, a photographer's studio in Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, and (my biggest embarrassment): 2 days at a French bakery where the scary owner lady demanded we speak French (at her level of native Parisian French!) at all times. Needless to say I had no idea what was going on, and left the second day crying!! Now it's a good story, but at the time it was humiliating, haha! The free croissants were the only good thing about that job.

I love both Amy and Tina. My first job was at a small grocery store stocking shelves. I was a tutor and was paid in Trix cereal, I used to sell pineapples around my neighborhood. All those jobs were between the ages of 10 and 13.

I love hearing about all these jobs! By far the worst job (kind of soul- crushing) was working at a call centre... But I suppose it's these jobs that make us who we are today! As a soothing exercise I wrote an article (in diary form) here:

My first job was for a charity, where we collected money from people and put it into a draw each week and then people won a prize for donating. My second job was in a bakery, and my third job as a teen was a late night DJ (I was under age and the boss there didn't want me working there until one night he came in and there were people dancing on the bar, and it was all to my remixes, such a fun job). Since I left that job, though I've more or less been waitressing the last 8 years.

I love the blog posts on this site that make me think! I've been an amusement park dancer (you know the ones...), dance teacher, babysitter (for all of 2 nights), unpaid intern, camp counselor (I quit in tears after one little girl tried to stab another little girl in the neck with a pencil), and now I work in an office.

My favorite job story is from my mom who, in her teenage years, worked as a waitress in her hometown's tiny amusement park. She said little old ladies used to come in every single day and order a cup of coffee and a hot dog and then leave her a quarter under the dish when they were done.

I worked for recycling services, in college, and we'd drive around the campus picking up recyclables. It totally removed any ego I had at 20 and the staff was incredible. Best part, we'd "borrow" the school vehicles to go play in the city and when you were having a bad day, you got the job of smashing glass. I loved this job!

I audited an animal rendering plant, sold second hand skis, cooked on a cruise boat, baited crab pots and culled crabs, restored a boat, taught arts and crafts, trained people on accounting systems, bought nuclear fuel, made pizzas, plotted maps, scooped ice cream, shoveled snow, paper girl.. and a whole lot of fairly normal "corporate" jobs.. wow... some strange things I have done for sure.

I want to share my life experience with everyone on this site. I was in a serious relationship with my boyfriend for 4 years and there was much love in the relationship. Until last month he broke up with me and got involved with his ex, he said to me he was no longer interested anymore. I was so confused and didn’t know what to do then, it was like my whole world crashed totally, I truly love and can’t imagine living without him. I tried all I could to let him remember all the promises we made to each other but nothing worked. Fortunately for me I saw on a website (www.thumbtack.com) and other blogs on how lots of people were testifying on how a great man called Dr. Keke helped return their lovers in 48 hours and that gave me much hope because I wanted my man back and I immediately contacted Dr. Keke on his e-mail address that almost all the testifiers dropped on their respective testimonies traditionallovetemple@gmail.com. I am telling you this with so much joy and happiness that after Dr. Keke helped me cast a love spell my lover came back to me in 48 hours to apologize and was hoping that we could be back together, it was like Dr. Keke love spell made him realize how much I love and wanted him back. I am sharing this testimony together with this great man’s mail because I strongly believe there are lot of you out there that don’t know about this wonderful spell caster but want such, if you can find this testimony among these numerous ones then your problem is already solved, contact him on traditionallovetemple@gmail.co

My name is Mr Max Silver,I live in Mexico, and I'm happily married with a lovely wife and three children. I had a very big problem with my wife few months ago,to the extent that she even packed her things away from me and my kids for almost 5 months, and i tried all my possible best and effort to bring her back, but all to no avail.I discussed it with a very good friend of mine, and he gave me an advice concerning a spell caster, and i quote.“There's someone who can handle your situation,he's always ready and able to do anything related to spell casting,i will like you to contact him with his email, which is as follows.”Dr Eromosale Great Oracle Temple Solution”. I never believed in spell casting, but he convinced me and i had no choice than to follow his advice, because i never dreamt of loosing my lovely wife. And that's how i contacted him with his email address, and i discussed with him and so surprisingly,he told me that I'll get my wife back a day after.so i never believed, until when i got home, the next day,my wife called me to inform me that she was coming back…..So amazing!! That's how i got my wife back through spell casting and our relationship was now stronger than how it was before. One of the price i was asked to pay was to tell it to people around me that problems like this, can always be solved by “Dr Eromosale Great Oracle Temple Solution”. So! my advice for you out there is to visit this same website, and tell him your problems too,if you are in any condition related to love issue or getting your ex back,to have a happy family.THANKS.... i almost took my life because of my ex who left me and stop picking my calls. He said do not trust me anymore, I tried to convince him, but he will not believe me until we had a fight and broke up for 10months, after then I realize I can not live without him because of the love I have for him. I tried everything possible to get him back, but non worked for me, some fake spell casters scammed me and went away with my money until I came across this man called dr. malawi, he cast a spell for me and behold my ex came back after 5 hours , begging me for forgiveness, I was so surprised that spell caster like dr. malawi still exist. If anyone here needs some help, with all sincerity, contact dr.malawi via his email:spellofsolutiontemple@gmail.com
