We're moving!

Under the categories of "Biting Off More Than We Can Chew" and "Things You Shouldn't Do With a Newborn and a Toddler," we have decided to move...

The moving date is this Saturday! I'm so excited!

Our current two-bedroom West Village apartment looks okay in photos, but it's actually super small, old and crumbling. Over the seven years that I've lived here, our third-floor walk-up apartment has had seventeen mice, cockroaches, two lead paint abatements, two burst pipes, a broken fridge, two leaky ceilings, a falling roof, truly crazy neighbors...the list goes on. But we loved our neighborhood and the rent was affordable. And nutty apartments are part of the NYC experience, right?

But while the apartment was great when we were young and fancy free, now that we have two babies, I've been losing my mind a little bit.

So, while we continue looking for a Brooklyn house, we have decided to move to a two-bedroom apartment a little farther downtown in Manhattan for the next year. The apartment is bright and airy and you can see sailboats from the windows! The building overlooks the Hudson River and is flanked by two playgrounds and a beautiful park (where Toby has all his birthday parties!). Our close friends live in the building, which is a huge bonus. We're psyched that it will feel like college, since we can walk up to their apartment in socks to watch TV and drink beers.

While I'm already nostalgic about leaving the West Village, I'm so excited for a fresh clean place. And it's only a five-minute cab ride and eight-minute bike ride away (I've clocked it:)

Here's our building:
I'll be taking the next couple days off to get sorted, and we're really excited to share photos of the new apartment once we get settled. Wish us luck on Saturday, eeks!!!

P.S. Our current apartment, and the Cup of Jo Guide to NYC.

Exciting! We moved (for the last time, I hope!) last spring into our new-to-us old house. It's stressful, I know. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your new place!

Any moving tips? Brokers you like? My husband and I are hopefully moving there from Nashville in about a month (eek!) and scrambling to figure it all out.
Congratulations!

Congrats! I feel ya on moving as life changes especially in relation to living in NYC. I came to the city 6 years ago also single and child-free. Living in Manhattan was a breeze then married and with a baby it was still manageable but we ended up moving just across the river to Jersey City and it's made a world of difference. Huge space for way less, better tax situation, amazing views of the city and subsidized preschool for my now 3-year old. Good luck with the move!

I have a question, not specific to you Jo, but anyone who cares to answer. I'm interested by how so many people rent in NYC (I understand due to the price of properties). Out of interest, what are most people's long term plans about buying a property. Do they intend to rent for life or do they save and jump on the ladder later on? I'm just interested because being able to afford to buy a property terrifies me and so I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

Yay! How fun! We are in the "moving with newborn" club too. We moved from New Mexico to Oklahoma when our oldest was 3 months old. When I was six months pregnant we sold our house and rented a house three hours north. Then when our baby was 3 months old we bought a house here and moved down the street. Hope you enjoy your new place!

Enjoy!! I hope Toby likes it.

So envious of your move! And excited for you! I love moving (hate PACKING, but...).

Had to laugh at your exact counting of mice...I used to count cockroaches in my Bushwick apartment...but cuz I would never have remembered what number I was up to, I named them alphabetically, "Abe, Bart, Calvin, etc.," so I could keep track. They were all men's names. In three years there I got up to Kevin. I didn't think that was *too* bad. The mice didn't bother me so didn't warrant counting.

But yay! New home, new adventures!

Congrats Joanna! How exciting! I love the area that you are moving too. I grew up right by the Seaport and a lot of my family remains in Tribeca. I loved it. It looks like you are headed towards Battery Park, which is one of my favorite spots.

Good luck with the move! Can't wait to see the new space.

Our second was born last July, and exactly a week later we closed on our first house and moved out of Brooklyn (still crying about that, btw). I was sitting on an inflatable doughnut in the moving van! The suprising upside to moving with a newborn and a toddler - you'll be too busy to help with any of the lifting of the boxes (which we all know is the worst part). :) Good luck + congrats!

This is great news and so wonderful!!-- i could feel what you were going through and always wondered how do you do it... all day cooped up, with such young children and RATS-- (OMG). But being in Toronto, way north of my beloved Miami, I realize that unlike Miami and California property managers do not maintain their buildings at all, renters have to do it all while paying overpriced $$$ for unhealthy living and even work spaces. It's unreal! We just have to build what we need to thrive. Happy moving day and enjoy the water-- it keeps me balanced (aka semi-sane). As Jack Nicholson said, "Something's gotta to give." Congrats with it all!

Personally, I think owning property in NYC is overrated. I've calculated it out numerous times and a comparable apartment to what I live in now would sell for between $700-850,000. The mortgage, after taxes and monthly maintenance, would be close to $5,000 which is DOUBLE my rent—and there's no one to call when something breaks. It's been fed to so many people our age (20s-30s) that you should "buy a house" when you can, but I don't think it's true anymore, especially not in NY. I'll gladly continue to rent and avoid crazy co-op boards, maintenance problems, and outrageous property taxes.

Congratulations on the move, Joanna!

We moved with an infant so I have one word: babysitter. We handed two kids to the nanny with some breast milk and a lot of formula, and a large chunk of cash. She was great. She took them home with her and they hung out and played and I honestly didn't worry that much. She took them the day before the move, the day of and the day after. We stayed in a hotel those two nights so she dropped them off exhausted and ready to be fed dinner, cuddled and put in bed. It worked wonderfully. They were completely out of my hair but I knew they were safe. I also do really recommend the hotel thing if you can swing it financially. You don't have to worry about finding your pjs or making the bed or navigating boxes in the middle of the night until you're really unpacked. You'll get so much more done without having to wrangle little ones.

Yay! congrats. I lived in NYC seven years ago and hubz and I are considering moving back - now with a one year and old and two dogs. Just yesterday I was looking at craigslist and we started doubting whether NYC would be possibly for us as a small family. Maybe your moving and this post is a sign that it is still possible. HOW did you ever manage to score an "affordable" apartment in the West Village? HOW?!? Even when I lived in NY I was in the UWS bordering Harlem. Kudos to your new place, it looks fab. *sigh* I MISS NY.

Cheers! from,

Congratulations! We have a new bub 1 week older than Anton and a 20 month old. We moved house when bub was 5weeks and toddler 18 months.. both boys too! I found the actual move not as dreadful as I thought, but was SO exhausted about a month after we had moved in and finally gotten 'settled' - I think the adrenaline got us through, but we got bitten afterwards - just a warning to try and avoid planning anything major in the next few months! We were worried that it might unsettle our toddler on top the new baby but he was completely fine and LOVES his new place. We love the new place too - it has made such a difference and was definitely worth the effort. It is no fun being unhappy with your environment when at home with two small babies - I certainly know this from experience!!

I just moved with a 6 month old baby, a psychopathy cat, too many books and an unorganised husband to a new apartment.
My tip: pack all the essentials you need for yourself and your little ones in a translucent plastic box, like the ones you can get at IKEA. So you don't have to dive into cardboxes if you are looking for something.

Karina said...

The best part: Anton stills sleeps anywhere, anytime. So during this whole moving process you don't have to worry about juggling two kids' schedules! Now that my son is five months, I'm really having to take his nap schedule into consideration...and my two year old still naps, so sometimes it feels like I can never leave the house. Hope the moving process goes smoothly!

aoife said...

We lived in the corner building for a couple of weeks when we first came to New York, I loved it down there (even though we don't have kids!)- sailboats, the bikepath, views of the entire city from the roof and the silence, oh the silence at night! We're in Flatiron now but I'd move back there in a heartbeat. Good luck with the move and enjoy the new 'hood!

After moving 11 times in 6 years, here is my best advice: Have one cocktail to start things off. It seems to lighten the mood and since it will be daytime when you start to feel like you are doing something fun instead of something awful! If you get emotional like I do, one drink seems to take the edge enough to keep you laughing about the moving experience instead of crying!
Good luck! I know it's going to be great! I couldn't be more excited for you all! :)

I used to live in one of those buildings and babysat for a few families in the neighborhood. laurenfoode.com said...

If you can afford it, it's a great investment. A friend's parents loaned her the down payment for an apartment ten years ago and she bought a tiny one bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side. She sold that for a profit and bought another. Then sold THAT for a profit and bought another in a very up and coming neighborhood (Williamsburg before it was big). She just sold that apartment for $1.2 million and is moving to Maine. She quadrupled her investment (real estate in NYC tends to always appreciate in value) and has a nice little chunk of change to live off of for awhile.

Funny... and nice the idea of living in a newer apt with view on water... Is the best I think... Good luck with the move and I'm sure it will all go well ... remember not to get stressed out... and think of the exciting new place instead!

I teach at the neighboring Washington Market School, so I know this street well. What a great area, and having the park across the street will be amazing! A tip: BMCC (a CUNY college just a few blocks away) hosts some great children's shows through the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Here's the link! http://tribecapac.com/theater

Good luck with the move... maybe I'll see you in the neighborhood!

Congratulations to you and your lovely family! I have to ask though; what's happening with your current apartment? My soon-to-be husband and I are moving to NY after our wedding next month!

Wonderful! I was just thinking about you this morning. I was like, how is she doing it with two babies in that place, I wonder if she really is pulling her hair out :) Good for you! Sending you calming vibes.

I know how you feel! We just moved from a cute (but crumbling) pre-war on the Upper West Side to a brand new building in Long Island City/Hunters Point. At first I was a little sad to leave our 'hood, but you can't beat an updated building, it's amazing! Best of luck with your move, it's never a fun process, but settling in always is! :)

We made almost the same move - west village to NBPC. I adored the west village, but I am so happy to be living on the water and surrounded by the parks. Such a lovely place to live now that we have a baby. Good luck with the move, and I hope you love your new neighborhood as much as we do! Join HRP mamas if you haven't already.

Are there groceries nearby? What about Mother's Day out programs in churches? We are moving to NYC (from across the country) and looking into neighborhoods. Can kids easily get into public preschool there or is it tough competition like the private schools?

So here's my question: when rent is 4-6k for a two bedroom, what does a family w 2 young kids (no school yet) have to make to live in NYC? We are thinking of moving (from out of state) and it seems impossible to live there unless you're making at least $250k!

Congrats! I hope it all goes well!
We moved from Washington, DC to London with a three-month-old and lived here with no furniture for two months while we waited for our shipping container to arrive. Now THAT is something you shouldn't do with a newborn! But it all worked out in the end and we are raising our family where we most wanted to. I hope you come to the end of your move and say the same! xx

I think it is Tribeca. If it isn't, I know it's in the West Village, which is a section of Manhattan. You don't have to go to a place to educate yourself about it. :)

Congratulations! An 8 minute bike ride is nothing ;) and it sounds like the new place will be a lot more comfortable for everyone. I feel your pain on the whole "moving with toddlers" ordeal; my husband and I recently started looking into these Lake Norman homes for that are sale, and while I am excited to be in a new place, I'm anxious about the stress uprooting everything first will inevitably bring.
