Do you still like beards?

When Alex accidentally grew a beard five years ago (he had the flu), I told him he looked rugged and handsome. Surprised, he said I was the only woman he knew who actually liked beards. But since then, beards have blown up in a huge way. For the past few years, it has seemed as if every guy—famous or otherwise—has grown a beard. Do you agree?

But last week, the Guardian ran an article asking, "Have we reached peak beard?" Apparently, they have gone mainstream and now might be on the wane.

So, I'm curious: Do you still like beards? Are you sick of them? Do you just want to see a guy's actual face for once? I'm still a super fan. Over the past five years, Alex has sometimes considered shaving, but I insist he never does!

P.S. Before and after.

Oh I love beards still. But it depends on the man. It is not a blanket love of all beards.

I'm not ready to see them go quite yet. I think it has something to do with the fact that my father had one all during my childhood and he always looked so handsome! Though my Andrew can't really grow one, I think they look so rugged and handsome!

I never thought I liked beards (perhaps I still don't) but my husband has one and I can't imagine him any other way. He is blonde so it's not very noticeable. Amazingly, my own mother didn't remember he had a beard until she showed a friend our wedding picture!

I like beards, but yes, they are going mainstream and that makes them not as unique.

I had dated a guy several years ago who let his chest hair go. When he took his shirt off, I was surprisingly into it. Now my husband has thanked me for liking his chest hair. He doesn't have to maintain it as much. Shaving is such a pain!

I think I'll always be pro-beard. My husband grew his out in the early stages of our relationship. When I look back at old pictures, I am surprised I fell in love with his naked face to begin with, hahah. I could never go back!

I didn't have an opinion either way till sometime maybe a year ago when all I saw on blogs was men with beards. Everywhere. Then I started disliking them. Not on your Alex of course or on any man that may have been sporting one just because he likes them. But when it goes all hipster and seems purely to fit into a social scene is the turning point for me. If everyone is doing it then it's not avant garde. It's boring. I'd much prefer someone who isn't so pre-occupied with their appearance with or without a beard in time. But for now, mostly without a beard. Saying that I do like my boyfriend with some growth but not a hipster beard you understand! Ha! Oh fashion. xxx

I love beards but my Dad always had one and now I love when my husband does not shave. I like a man who looks like he could go and chop me some firewood . I remember as a kid my dad would shave his off from time to time and he would look completely different, it was quite unnerving , can you imagine little Toby seeing his Daddy sans beard ! It really does change the look of a mans face , I love your blog btw .

Interesting, I remember reading this post from the Wall Street Journal that linked beard popularity with a bad economy (i.e. laid off executives). Here's the link: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122895453707496425.html

Personally, I think I'll always love the lumber jack look :).

I like beards when men take care of them... if they're growing a beard just because they don't want to bother shaving then it tends to show! My boyfriend has one and he's positively dreamy, so...! :)

I think they can look pretty good on some guys. But... my husband would look sick. And not in a good way. So... on him? Not so much! : )

I should also add that when men take care of them TOO much it turns me way off. I like beards but not when they're a special cut... like the rim around the jaw or the soul patch.

My Mr also grew one accidentally when he was man down with flu for a week & I encouraged him to keep it. He'd never tried because he didn't think he would be able to get good 'coverage' - but neither of us has looked back!
I look at pics before he had it (like all our wedding & dating photo's) & he looks like he has such a baby face :P

The funny thing is, when my fiancee began growing his beard and I told him I thought he was so much more attractive with one, he was insulted! He felt like his face without a beard was his "natural face" (which is kind of funny since shaving is an unnatural habit). Over the years, he's grown into his "beard face" (literally and figuratively) and we are both pro-beard for the long haul. Good news for me! Team beard 100%!

I have been a beard lover since Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean (when I was 13 haha). I absolutely insist that my boyfriend keeps his beard. Who doesn't love a rugged bearded man cheek to kiss? :] I don't think I'll ever become a clean-shaven fan.

I'm obsessed with my boyfriends beard. He let it grow all winter, but insists he'll get a "beard tan" if he lets it get too long in the summer. I'll alllllllllll about the beards and would be content if he never trimmed it again :)

I met my husband in 2007, about a year after he started growing his beard. To this day, I have never seen his face.
He's a teacher and has worked in schools for the past 5 years, but being so young he keeps his beard trimmed short, because he doesn't want to seem "unkempt" or whatever.
So all year long I wait for the summer time so he will grow it longer. MMmmmmm.
I still like a man with a beard. :)

I love the way my husband looks with a beard, even if it is a little scratchy. He's not big on it, but he's started humoring me one month a year--usually November--by letting his hair and facial hair grow. The rest of the year he's cropped short and clean shaven.

I can't stand beards! Sorry, Alex! I think Dr. McDreamy scruff is too much. I like a clean cut, preppy guy. The hipster look does not do it for me. The only time my husband has grown out his facial hair at all was when we were on a rafting trip and he forgot his razor. That was three days. He still shaved when he was in the hospital with a head injury after a bad skiing accident. He just made the switch to an electric razor for a week.

I don't like it when my husband shaves. When I met him he had a very short beard, but has since grown it out. I love the rugged manliness of it! When he shaves, I swear he looks like he's 15! I don't want to be married to a 15 year old :) We're lucky because my husband works at a place where it's okay to have one. Some of his employees actually have the long Duck Dynasty beards! (Not a fan, by the way! A beard should be groomed for it to look handsome in my opinion.)

I have never wanted a guy with an all-the-time beard because my Dad had a full beard my entire life! I do find a guy who has the nice few days after shaving facial hair very handsome - and a full beard is okay as along as it is for short time (winter, camping, etc.) and then be rid of it. Thus, I couldn't go for a man who looks BEST with a beard.

I love a man in a beard! While we were dating, my husband had phases where he would have different beards and be clean shaven. It was after we got married that he has kept the beard because I prefer him with a nicely trimmed beard. That being said, a beard isn't appropriate on every man's face, but I definitely think it adds to the manly factor. I personally don't like the over-grown untrimmed beard because it just looks like the guy was lazy. I really like it when it's well manicured. :)

Happily CF said...

I don't "still" like beards, because I never liked them. No, scratch that... I have always liked them on the right guy I don't have to kiss. They do make some people look rugged and handsome and I thought that long before they became trendy. But I have never liked them on any of my significant others. They're scratchy and can be quite gross after the guy eats.

This is a hipster thing, anyway. I don't know any non-hipsters, other than genuine backwoods men, who have beards.

My husband always has some facial hair (at only one point in the last seven years since we've known each other has he not had some scruff, and it was so odd), but usually he had to shave his beard for the summer of he said his face would melt off. We just moved to the mountains and it's much cooler here, so he's bearding year round. Hurrah!

Erica C. said...

My husband grows a beard during our cold Midwest winters, but I prefer him beardless. He still looks super handsome with a beard (and never gets carded, whereas without one he gets carded about 75% of the time), but I much prefer kissing without all of those whiskers.

Joanna. said...

I don't see many beards round where I live (Yorkshire, UK) which is odd, because it's proper farmer land. However, when I first met my boyfriend he had a measly attempt at a beard (loosely translated as 'pubes on face') and it's got thicker over the 6 years I've known him so without it he looks ridiculous! I can't be doing with a clean shaven face. Would be so weird! Beards FTW!

I like the look on certain men, but my man is not one of them. Which is fine because I don't like a scratchy kiss! But I can see how some men have softer beards that don't look so scratchy. And they seem to be driving many women wild, which I fully support.

But I definitely have seen some beards taken too far. As in too long and scraggly, like they are only doing it because it's fashionable right now. All I can think is how can his poor wife handle looking at that pubic looking beard???

But if you have you have been bless with a great beard, by all means, rock it!

my dad had a beard my whole life, so maybe that's why I like them. and he was definitely not trying to be a trendsetter. some guys can and should have a beard, and some definitely should not. my husband also has at least a goatee most of the time (even for our wedding) but when he was filming a role in Hatfields & McCoys a couple years ago, he had to let it grow long. Like really long. Like my dad's had been. Iit brought back memories of being a little girl and not liking my daddy's "whiskers." So, I like the look, but not the feel :)

When we were dating my husband grew out his facial hair and I've made him keep it ever since...though every now and then he shaves it off to start over. Which is good because without it he looks half his age, which might be great when you are old but not when you are 30.

My husband's beard is patchy, so when he grows it out it just looks... gross. Luckily he agrees, so he sticks with just the mustache. Which also conforms to the rules he has to follow as a firefighter (they aren't allowed to grow beards so that their equipment seals correctly around their face). I think that mustaches are a very happy medium that should be more widely used throughout the male population. I'm sick of seeing gross, patchy beards out there.

it's so cute how some hipster fellas have grown beards, nurtured them and waxed them, as though they're some symbol of authenticity or parochialism that will be discarded as soon as the next trend crops up. I grew up in a culture where nearly all the men in my family wore beards; I remember playing with my Dad's beard in church, and I don't think I can remember a time when any of my uncles or grandfather did not have beards. They look naked without them, and they've been rocking them well before it became the cool thing to do. I will always like beards. I don't see them as some shoddy trend that will die away like the autotuning.

Yes I agree 100%- "statement" beards just seem like the guy is trying too hard. I love my boyfriend's beard because it's unassuming and he's worn it that way for years.

Me too!

"he said I was the only woman he knew who actually liked beards" my boyfriend said something really similar to me.

I only like beards on men when the hair in the beard is the same color as the hair on the head! (A little "salt" in the beard doesn't bother me). Its just seems wrong when the color is not the same.

I find that beards scratch my face and hurt a bit when my husband kisses me, so I prefer he stay clean shaven. It's not that I don't like how beards look, I just don't like the pain they cause me. LOL

My man has a trimmed beard and I love it! I hate when he goes back to goatee. It just looks too polished for his laid back style. Beard and his "hipster" glasses look much better in my opinion :)

No more beards. And definitely not n my man!

I loves me a rugged man. My husband always jokes that, before we were dating, since he liked me for so long without much return from my end (as a clean shaven, short-haired man), he had to grow his hair and his beard out to finally catch my eye.

emilialiveslife said...

Yes! I love a beard on a guy. Is it because they look more masculine? More rugged? More ready to sit down and start talking about books and politics? I'm not totally sure what it is, but I know I like a man with a beard. :)

hahaha holy shit! are you living my life? i just read the title and before even reading this to myself, narrated it to my bearded-because-i-insist husband. it is hilarious! YES! i STILL love beards! every time he's like "maybe i'll shave it and start over" i'm like "nooo! wah!" so yeah, beards are still awesome five years later and it is not even close to just you living this bearded husband life!

Hellz yeah I still like beards! LOVE them. My man is a beardy, beardy mountain man (who sometimes carves mustaches out of all that hair, which is an extra delight), and I love it.

I have always been more of the in between a beard and a shaved face scruff. You know, just a little more than the 5 o'clock shadow. I think it's sexy. But I also enjoy how a freshly shaven face feels against mine. ;)

Beards only work on some men, it depends on their faces and style too. Also, I'm not sure if I would date a man with a beard.

Still love beards. I agree with you as far as Alex is concerned, I prefer him with a short beard. I can't think of my husband withour a beard, he looks like Gregory House and I won't want him to change for anything in the world. Go beards!!

I am indeed a huge fan of beards. BUT my boss grew one recently and he's a bit clean cut for a beard, I think so I guess it just doesn't suit some people.

Oh I definitely still love beards! my boyfriend also kind of accidentally grew one a few months ago and I went so nuts for it, he hasn't shaved it since, to the chagrin of his grandmother, godmother and mother. they keep asking "so you really like him this way??" to which I reply with a firm "YES" which means "no, I'm not making him shave.

In the same vein, one of my best friends is a bearded guy. he loves his beard, but he had to shave it once, and when his girlfriend saw him beardless, she left the room and didn't talk to him for a few hours.

Beards are still cool. I hope they'll always be.

Well, I think my husband looks smokin' hot with a beard, so yes. But not every man can pull it off. My brothers look silly if they try to grow beards-- all scraggly and goat-like. They're much more handsome clean shaven. :) So it depends.

No way! I work at a large academic hospital in Boston, and we are doing a trial on how many germs live in beards!

I like my hubby with a beard when he keeps it all neat and trimmed up. I find a goatee on him particularly attractive though. Over the last 20 years I've seen him in pretty much every stage of shaven and unshaven and I always love a bit of facial hair on him.

Always loved beards... my husband has one and strangely, with it he looks handsome, but when he has shaved it off, his face looks so much like his mother's that it's a huge turn-off. Terrible, right?!!! Not that anything's wrong with his mom, it's just... yikes!

I am definitely not a fan of facial hair. What is the man hiding? A nonexistent chin? Bad skin? Is he just lazy?

I read a magazine piece about facial hair. Several men were asked to comb their beards, etc. over a large piece of paper that went off to a lab. All manner of things were trapped in the whiskers---spider legs, insect bits, pieces of food, dirt/dust, pollen, etc. And these were not sloppy men. Their exceedingly neat (save for facial hair) visages appeared above the debris found in their whiskers. Apparently beards are like dusters. Yuck!

I love them too. Short ones provide nice chin definition. And movie stars always look so much more handsome with them. It separates the men from the boys.

Beards are sexy! There is something so manly about them. I hate it when my husband shaves his off, he looks so strange and quite a bit older.

When I was 22 my Dad for the first time in my life shaved his beard for Worlds Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation and when he walked in the house I thought a stranger was in the house. Freaked me right out!

I never thought I would...until I met my husband! After a cycling accident left a large scar on his chin, he couldn't imagine scraping a razor over it, so grew a beard! I've seen pictures of him without his beard, and he is almost unrecognizable! Love my husband and his beard!

I definitely think it depends on the man. When I was in marching band in college, some of the guys would grow beards when the weather turned cold, and that right there showed me beards are NOT for everyone. Some men can handle being scruffed up; some men are already haggard (like Zack Galifinakis) and MUST SHAVE NOW. If a beard makes you look in any way homeless or down on your luck, then ya just can't rock it. Sorry, but I feel strongly about this. Maybe I'll blog about it. :)

I love a beard! My husband and I met in the military, so he wasn't allowed to have a beard. The first time I saw him with a beard was when we were dating. He was on leave for a month to visit his family in Europe. I went to the airport to pick him up. I can vividly remember him walking up to me with a full beard. My heart skipped a beat because he looked so handsome! We are both out of the military now, so he maintains a short well groomed beard. I still love it.

I like beards but my husband does not like the itchy way his face feels while he is growing one, so I only ever get him with scruff. I think I like them because my dad usually had one... I have a great picture of my dad and two uncles in the 1970's, all with beards and hideous(ly awesome) shirts.
