A puppy room

How awesome is this: Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia has set up a puppy room for stressed-out students. During exam week, students can swing by to play with different affectionate breeds, says Therapeutic Paws of Canada, and cuddling with dogs will hopefully help the students chill out and lower their blood pressure.

My University (University of Victoria in B.C.) has puppy parades during the last week of school. It is a cute idea, although honestly I'm usually too busy to enjoy it!

This is actually slightly old news. Dal did this back last Christmas during exams, but it was an international hit at the time!

Showing this to my boss. Who knows, right??

My alma mater, University of Portland, brings in an alpaca (I believe his name was Larry?) during finals week! It's always the highlight of everyone's week :)

Most Canadian universities employ something similar to this during exam times!

My law school has done this during exams for the past two semesters. It is INCREDIBLE how much it actually helps. I can't tell you how many times I dropped my notes on the table and said "I can't do this right now. I'm gonna go hang out with the puppies."

When I was an undergrad at William and Mary, a local Therapy group brought dogs to the University Center for students to just play with and pet to work off some stress around exams time. I loved it, especially because most college students can't have pets, being in dorms and apartments and moving back and forth so much!

The university I work for in San Diego has a "pause for paws" event during finals week too!

I was just saying to my husband the other day how much I wished there was a puppy cafe in our neighborhood. It'd be a place to go with a book and have a cup of coffee, and pet puppies. I sort of thought I'd just made it up, but wouldn't it be so amazing?

How cute! My university did no such thing, although if they did I'm pretty sure I would be playing with the puppies more than I would be studying.

My medical school does this as well - a few times a month there are puppies on campus!

I know a couple universities in texas did this in the past couple of years! such a cute idea!

OMG I wish I had a puppy room I could go to! This is the best idea ever.

What an amazing idea! I definitely hang out with my pup when I get stressed. Seeing a happy dog playing helps to simplify life for a moment.

it's wonderful to see that the stress of college students is being taken into consideration like this!

and what a great way to de-stress! (p.s. - those puppies are so cute!)

I'm a student at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia and our student life department has started a similar program! Great way to destress and fun to see the dogs around. A lot of employees also bring their dogs to work which is nice!

We have one at my law school during exam periods. We even had a therapy horse last year!!

My college town had a 'cookie house' where anyone was free to go to make cookies at any time, day or night. All of the ingredients were provided, the only rule was that you had to leave a few cookies for the next group to snack on while baking :) http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/dacie/purpose/

My alma mater, Smith College, did this also! I think they called it "Pet-a-Pet." College faculty and staff brought their pets to the chapel for students to cuddle during exams.

An Episcopal church near campus also hosted a midnight pancake breakfast open to all students during exams. The Sunday School classes made treat bags that included messages like, "You can do it!" and "We love you!" I always taped the messages above my desk and read them when I was feeling overwhelmed. Such great traditions!!

i've heard of schools bringing puppies to campus during exam week, but not of a whole puppy ROOM! that sounds like heaven.

i go to school in boston, and after the marathon bombing there were tons of therapy dogs around campus as well as the rest of the city, especially just outside of the memorial in copley square. it definitely helped people de-stress during a tough time.

Twice a week at the University of Ottawa we had zootherapy with the cutest dogs EVER. You could just go and hang out with the dogs and relax in between classes. I just loved the concept and as a student, it really did work!

Genius idea! I'm so glad it's not a "cat room"....that would stress me out even more. ;) Puppies are perfect!

I work at the University of Missouri and they've done this in the past. They usually set it up in the student center, use humane society pups and then charge people (students and staff alike), like $1 for 5 minutes of cuddle time. The proceeds then go to the humane society. I've never done it (I've got two dogs of my own to cuddle), but it's awfully tempting!

Oh my gosh... I instagramed about something similar not too long ago. My law school from which I graudated about six years ago (yikes!) now brings in puppies during final exams! Kids have it so easy these days. =)

I work at Edinburgh University Students' Association, and this is something we just started doing at finals time last academic year, along with the Uni's Counselling Service. It went down a storm, and we're certainly looking into doing it again.

Love it! In college, we had an event called Heavy Petting (hehe) where neighboring folks from town brought their dogs to campus for students to pat and play with a couple of times during the semester.

Probably the smartest idea to incorporate stress free zones for university students. I can't wait to take advantage of this in the fall, I'm always up for a cute puppy snuggle!

I am dying. I wish there was a place like this for the general public, I would probably be there every day.

What a brilliant idea! I wish more schools adopted this practice.

UC San Diego did this too, when I was a student there! They had a little shaded area set up on a part of campus we affectionately called "Library Walk" where puppies and people-volunteers hung out in the San Diego sun during finals week, waiting for students to take a study break and come play with the dogs. It was amazing!! Wish my office did this too... :)

There's this fantastic organization here in Sarasota that provides service dogs for the visually impaired/disabled, and it has public "puppy hugging days" where visitors can play with and snuggle the little guide-dogs-to-be. I mean...is there anything better than a hugging wriggly little puppy?

Really? I graduated from Mizzou several years ago, but I don't remember this happening at all. I would've totally participated!

They didn't actually have any puppies which was the sad part. Just old therapy dogs, still nice though.

They do this at Point Loma College in San Diego too!

I want a whole room of puppies! At our school, Loyola Marymount they brought around therapy dogs the last two years during spring finals. It's really lovely. And they also brought puppies the week before finals. I was on such a dog high those two weeks.

Michelle said...

That is so damn adorable! Look at their little faces how could you not destress in a room like that ;) If only I had those sorts of things when I was at school maybe I would have liked it a bit more!

Yeah, Dal! Did my Master's there. No puppies during my time, though :(. Awesome idea.

I went to Butler University in Indianapolis. They would bring puppies into the health center/gym during finals week. It was an awesome stress reliever! Puppies + a workout = pure joy.

I go to NAIT in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and during exam season they brought dogs in- I guess its becoming a worldwide trend! I'd personally rather snuggle a kitten but I'll take what I can get ;)

My dog is a therapy dog with The Good Dog Foundation, and we actually visit NYU when the college kids are studying for finals- I went last year, the students really loved it!

our principal and school nurse brought their dogs in for our elementary students during state testing week this past year, and it was brilliant! the kids (and teachers!) were all so excited, and absolutely loved it.

for kids who were afraid of dogs or allergic, i set up a station in the library where they could watch on imessage and participate. they loved that, too.

I went to Dalhousie and they certainly didn't have a puppy room when I was there. In retrospect probably a good thing as I don't think I would have done anything except play with the puppies.
