Summer movie

Old man Alex is always complaining that movies aren't good anymore. But! The new drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints looks incredibly gripping. Its official release date is August 16th, although BAM in Brooklyn is showing a screening next Wednesday along with a talk with the director David Lowery and star Casey Affleck.

"The gritty landscape of 1970s Texas Hill Country serves as the backdrop for this mood-drenched collision of love and crime. After his pregnant wife (Rooney Mara) makes one false move during a bloody shootout, a bank robber (Casey Affleck) faces a 25-year sentence that destroys his dreams of a family life. Shot through with the yearning and melancholy of a folk ballad, Lowery’s directorial breakthrough...extends the Bonnie and Clyde tradition with its breathtaking meditation on the fragility and transience of love." — BAM

"I wanted this whole movie to have the texture of, like, an old piece of wood that you'd find in an abandoned house, and that's sort of what we strove for." — Director David Lowery

The Guardian called it "exhilarating." Will you see it this summer?

I'm looking forward to that one...I love the dreamy vibe of the film.

I recently saw the movie Frances Ha, with Greta Gerwig. Highly recommend!

I'm not good at watching movies like this, I'll admit it.
I like goofy, relaxed, romantic movies.

Wowza! I will definitely be checking this one out, seems right up my alley. Love the quote about the old piece of wood, looks like they really achieved that feeling.

Thanks for sharing!

Yep - I recently saw this trailer and added it to my list of must-sees. The popular movies are mostly crap, but there's still some really good stuff out there. You just have to look a little harder.

Hi ACupofJo,

Just a quick note to let you know that some of those great nursing tops from Boob are on sale (!!) on Zulily. I just picked up some tanks! My due date is TODAY so I'm hoping they arrive soon!

Whoa. The trailer reminds me of The Place Beyond the Pines, which I found to be a little dark for my taste. The acting looks wonderful though- what a talented cast!

I wil definitley see this! I also have "What Maisie Knew" on my list.

I saw the premiere of this movie at Sundance this year. So good! Was amazing to have the director and cast right in front of you after watching it. I also love that photo, it says so much.

I thought he WAS Ben Affleck for a second before I looked closer. Can't wait to see this one :)

Tell Alex that there are great movies out there, they're just not the ones getting the huge advertising budgets that the less great ones are. I agree that most of the studio fare sucks lately , but there are a ton of independent gems that might be flying below his radar. If you guys haven't seen Gimme The Loot or Frances Ha, those are both terrific (and awesomely real portrayals of NYC that can be hard to find - puts Girls to shame.) Fruitvale Station that's coming out this year is outstanding, and What Maisie Knew was excellent as well. Check out Indiewire or Filmmaker Magazine (their websites) to find more movies that are great and less publicly known.

Whew! At the end of the preview, I realized I'd been holding my breath. Just beautiful. I can't wait.

Casey is looking good! I commented before about this, but you guys HAVE to see Mud. I really think it's one of the best films of the year. Such amazing acting and storytelling.

This movie looks amazing! It's definitely on my list of must-see movies this summer, along with Sofia Coppola's Bling Ring!

Emmy M. said...

^I agree about Bling Ring- Sofia Coppola's films are so great. Just rewatched Lost in Translation last night.

Movies aren't good anymore, eh? Well here are a few good ones from the last ~10 years to prove that statement wrong :): In the Mood for Love, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, The Lives of Others, The Royal Tenenbaums, Amelie...

I second MUD, I haven't seen a hollywood movie with good storytelling and characters like that for a long time. Like a modern Huckleberry Finn.

I saw this film at the Sundance Film Festival. Totally moving, totally amazing. During the Q&A with the director, he revealed that he got the idea for the name of the film from a song he had heard years ago. He was listening to the song and thought he heard the lyric "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" and it stuck with him as a great name for a film. Funny thing is, when he went back and listened to the same song, it didn't say that at all. Definitely see it.

Jo, this looks and sounds amazing. I tend to agree with "old man Alex". So very few really good movies lately...
Although, I recently watched Rust and Bone with Marion Cotillard, and Amour, both of them wonderful and soul-stirring. There's something about those French movies that just taps into emotions you didn't know you have.

Have a great weekend!

The older I get (at the ripe old age of 30) the less I enjoy movies like this. There is enough drama in the real world, I tend to just want something a bit fun that I can tune out to.
I definitely appreciate what they are though, and the actors are amazing and talented... These very dramatic and serious roles just don't leave me feeling light and happy the way some other ones do. :)

Isabellakatrina said...

Yay! So glad you posted about this! A friend of mine did the soundtrack to this! Hadn't seen the trailer to it yet.

Meadow said...

Hmm. I like fun, action-packed movies. I think enough at work, I like to be entertained when I go see a movie. Not to be sad or made to think lol. I totally agree with what Scout and Rice said in a previous comment.

I definitely want to see this. Love Casey Affleck.

And I have to disagree with Alex... there have been some incredible movies released this past year (Argo, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, Life of Pi...)
