Summer vacation rentals

Are you going on a summer vacation? New York Magazine just featured a round-up of amazing rental properties, including a tiny lakeside cabin, working lighthouse and private island. Which would you choose?

P.S. Five weekend getaways from NYC, and my own travel fantasy.

I think i would like the Lakeside Hideaway, but that teepee looks pretty amazing!

Ooh I would love the private island. But my husband would die if there were no wifi or the possibility of watching Game of Thrones. Le sigh.

That little cabin looks like the perfect get-a-way!

We are headed to Price Edward Island next week and I can hardly wait. And then every year we do a month at my in-laws in Western Canada!

We rented this darling little beach house in Northern California: http://www.beachcottage.us/

I couldn't resist those views!

this makes me so excited for summer! I'll be heading to the hamptons next weekend to spend time with family - i can't wait!

I like the lakeside hideaway and just FYI, I know the people who own it and they have the most incredible taste, so I can only imagine that every detail of that place is impeccable. Also, it's a one family structure, so it doesn't fall under the "airbnb is illegal in NY" issue that has just surfaced.

Yes! Especially to the soaking tub. Not sure how I feel about the bear skin over my bed, though. It'd probably have to be the tepee for pure novelty effect. We're on vacation at the moment (England and France) and have been delighted with our airbnb finds -- can't recommend them highly enough!

I'm headed to San Francisco and Los Angeles next week for a research trip (I'm an art history grad student). Very excited to see the shows up at the various art museums, especially the James Turrell retrospective. Later in July or August my boyfriend and I are hoping to get down to Newport, RI for some weekend trips, and possibly Montreal!

I adore the house on the private island - would love to go there in the early fall, would be so cozy!

We're going out of town, but unfortunately with our limited budget, the rentals in our destination options were already booked!

Ultimately, my goal is to have a place where we can cook meals, so this year we're spending our summer vacation in an extended stay hotel. It may not have the charm we'd like, but it'll get the job done!

brooke—me too!! whawt a small world. i didn't realize it was matt and yolanda's cabin until i clicked through to the airbnb listing and saw his face :) i love that he provides a flask of whiskey.

We just stayed at the most amazing house in the Berkshires called High Pocket Farm. We're posting about it tonight, but here are some Flickr pics of the 9 day old goats and our horseback riding!

We've also been rounding up our favorite upstate NY and New England rental houses for Farmhouse Friday this month. I'm dreaming of another rental getaway soon...

I glimpsed P.E.I. for all too short a time on a mother-daughter trip to the Canadian Maritimes, but I'd love to return someday with girlfriends who love Anne et al (and just beautiful scenery) to bike from one end of the island to the other and just B&Bing it along the way.

Am planning a trip to Amsterdam right now, keeping your A'dam post in mind! So excited because it'll be my first solo trip in years, and I can't wait to hit the art museums and go biking in the countryside and, in Belgium, eat chocolate and frjtz and lambic (not necessarily all at once). The fact that Köln, Paris, and London aren't too far from Brussels is also highly appealing...

My family is from Clayton! It's such a tiny place, it's funny to see it listed as a "vacation destination", if you will.

Also, isn't that Hamptons house the one from Sex and the City? When Samantha throws the cantaloupe?

I'll take the private island in Clayton, NY, thank you very much! Actually, we rented a house for a week this summer in upstate NY that has a waterfall on the property. Can't wait!

This is so amazing!!! I'm already getting so many ideas-and can I point out how cheap it'd be per person for a week on that private island?? In love.

I dream of renting a summer cottage by a lake - in fact, I looked into getting one for my birthday this year, but by the time I thought of it (in February) they were all booked up! These are wonderful, from grand to quaint. I'm not sure if I could hack it, but I love the idea of the Bespoke Cabin.

,,,my first choice: a summer cottage on martha's vineyard, nantucket or the cape (i've done this and it's so fun and relaxing) my second choice: a cabin in the mountains any mountain and my final choice: the very rental house in your photo. how cool is that little rental? way cool!,,,

That cabin is adorable! I'd love to stay in that for a week :) We're also looking into some Martha's Vineyard vacation rentals, I bet there are cute cottages like that one available also.

Ooh! I could just imagine staying in a lighthouse for a vacation and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. Privacy is one of the main concerns why a lot of people prefer renting houses rather than staying in hotels during vacations. Actually, renting a place to live isn't that bad either. It's a good stepping stone if you want to purchase your own house, and you can modify the place too without shelling out a lot of money.

I'm not sure if I'd like to stay in a rental home this size, even if it was for vacation. It would be really fun to stay for a night or so but it seems pretty small for a long stay. I've been trying to find a home rental in Augusta my husband and I can vacation in and I'd love something like this but maybe 3 rooms instead of the one. Any suggestions?
