Summer uniform: Which would you pick?

Last summer, my summer uniform was a sweatshirt dress, which I wore on bike rides, to work meetings and out to dinners with Alex. For this summer, here are three more effortless dresses for everyday adventures. Let's go pretend shopping...
A grey tankdress with a slit to the knee.
An afternoon dress for a pop of red (with a cute zip pouch).
A breezy striped shiftdress. (I LOVE this one.)

Just for fun: Which of these summer uniforms would you pick? Which suits your personality best? I love that these dresses are feminine but tomboy-ish at the same time.

P.S. I'd wear them with my trusty wedges, but flat sandals would be cute, too.

I LOVE that first look! I posted about a killer beach bag I also adore today. I think together, they may just make the perfect summer outfit!! ;)

Oh wait, just clicked over. Cinched at the waist. Which brings it down quite a few notches in my book. And obviously the smarty-pants stylists at Madewell knew it too which is why they styled it this way in the photos... Tricksy.

Oh my god, I couldn't decide. I love the maxi, if only it was a tid bit longer. But my favorite is the red dress, I think, I like the length and cut! And I really love that polka dotted zip pouch to go with it!

The red dress is just my style, but I love the other two as well! I think for petite girls like me, the red shift is perfect. I would love to get it for my very first trip to Paris this summer...

FIRST one, hands down. I can't get enough of maxi dresses!

Alright, you've walked right into my brain, so chatty response: I've spent way too much time lately trying to figure out how to up the chic of my non-work wear, with the triple challenge of a) I live in southern Texas, where it's nutty hot; b) I'm pregnant; and c) I have a toddler, so washable's a must and short skirts are out (unless I'm feeling like flashing the neighbors that day). Maxis can be a good solution, but tricky on a short girl (potential danger: looking LOW and WIDE, also I find myself tripping every time I bend over to pick up my son). So lately I've been fantasizing about knee-length cotton or linen skirts (with elastic waists) and cute blouses to go over - washable, lightweight, not schlubby, but still cool and comfy and feminine. I'll have to see whether Madewell has anything. I was in Loft over the weekend, and I'm not ordinarily a fan, but they had a surprising variety of very decent options.

So... I would say option B on style, but option A or C on practicality. I'd love a little color in option C! I've had enough grey the last few years to last me a lifetime.

I'd wear the first one!

They grey tank dress all the way. I have something similar that I love and feel amazing when I wear it. The slit to the knees is genius too because it can be hard to walk with floor length skirts or dresses on.

LOVING the red dress!! Perfect for afternoon strolls, shopping, and easy to pack for summer get-aways :)

Red isn't a color I wear that often, but I think I'd totally wear that red dress to death this summer!

I *just* bought the grey tank dress from Madewell last week, and I love it! I'm short (barely 5'3'') and wasn't sure if it would be flattering at all, but it has an amazing fit, and strangely enough makes me look taller. The slits on the sides make it easy to walk in, and make me feel glamorous in an old-movie-star-wearing-a-long-dress kind of way.

I would purchase the red one in every color if they weren't $98 each. Also, distraction on this model obviously not wearing a bra, LOL.

Melissa said...

I'm torn between the 1st and 2nd. The gray maxi is easy and can be dressed up or down, but the red dress is much more fun. In the end, I would probably end up with the gray; I can't say no to a good dress slit like that.

Raphaelle Robert said...

I would go with the second dress because even though I love the first look, it would not be super flatering on me. also I adore anything red!!

Since you're prego like me, I thought I'd suggest this great t-shirt dress from Old Navy - it's a little longer (passed the kneeling/bend-over test with wrangling my 2yo) and with sleeves, has enough coverage to not look *too* casual all the time. Just a suggestion! http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=93289&vid=1&pid=269832012

gar! i LOVE the last one too - looks so breezy and comfy - but honestly, with the back cut the way it is what kind of bra is one to wear? why do designers keep designing tank tops and dresses that require a special bra or no bra (not an option for 34F me, thank you)? i do not have time to think about wearing special undergear for what's supposed to be a casual, no effort look. sheesh!

sorry about that vent! love your picks! ( :

I love the red! I had a baby last summer so I was mostly wearing sweats and couldn't fit into any of my summer clothes. I can't wait to wear all my summer dresses for the first time in 2 years!

Erin said...

Hi Marisa! That was beyond sweet - thank you for the suggestion! This actually looks like it could be a great solution :) And congratulations!

kittenhood said...

I'd totally go for the red one - although the last one looks even easier to wear!

Rachel said...

I love the last two! But I have to pick the gray and white striped tank dress. The structure is loose enough for the hot summer temperatures, but it's also a light enough material that you can accessorize it with scarfs or cardigans. Also, the neutral colors mean it goes with anything.

Georgia Christakis said...

all are nice, but also a bit too expensive for me. I prefer a tank or t-shirt with a long skirt and toms or comfy sandals (:

I love that first maxi dress look! Maxis for me are like wearing sweats - so comfy! I feel almost guilty for wearing them out in public! So, that would definitely be my pick for my summer uniform.

It's funny, I just bought the grey and the red dress. They both fit very nice! Two good choices.

I live in dresses like the red one all year long. Heavier fabrics with tights in the winter and cotton/silk ones like the red in the summer. I am not a pants person. I only have one pair of jeans and one pair of shorts with the exception of gym gear. I do think that dress is a little short when you have kids and you're bending over and squating all the time. I already wear little boy shorts under them but I generally try to keep my skirts within an inch or two of my knee caps.

Julia C. said...

The long gray dress! I don't have any long casual dresses. I really want one that is actually floor length so it grazes the floor and covers my feet - ankle length is odd-looking to me.

Beth E. said...

I can't be the only person who thinks those dresses are kind of . . . young? I just bought my ten year old that striped dress and a floral sundress at Madewell. My 18 year old niece wears dresses like the maxi. The red is okay but a touch short for someone over 25.

megan said...

I love the red dress! It definitely fits my personality. You can dress it up or down.

The stripey dress is so cute. :) I'd definitely pick that one.

the red one! without a doubt! i'm very petite so anything too long or too shapeless makes me look either like a kid or a homeless person...or both. All of my summer dresses are actually variations on the one you posted, in different colours.

LOVE Madewell. I'v seen the red dress in the store and I think the cut and design is brilliant. Also, the fabric just feels devine. The shiftdress looks perfect for the beach!

Not a huge fan of slits in dresses, though - I think I'd just prefer more panels of fabric for extra swish and comfiness.

Susan M. said...

The slits in the first dress don't look quite right with the grey and style of the dress. The other two dresses are sweet. Love your wedge picks. I like a maxi dress in the summer (but that's not so good for biking). I'm soon going to have a baby, and I haven't yet determined what my summer uniform will be. Last time I wasn't that sold on the nursing tops I had. I'm going to try the boob top you recommended this time round.

It makes me sad that some people found the need to comment on the model's lack of a bra in the first photo. Wow, ladies. I mean, c'mon. That is what breast look like. You have a pair, take a look next time you get out of the shower. It's really not a big deal. Don't give in so easily to what social construct tells you you are supposed to look like - with your breast all hiked up to your ears and such. That model looks exactly as the human female body should.

I think the first outfit needs a bra to make it look more polished.. yes.. I "know" that in their natural state.. they aren't up to our ears.. but in such a casual slouchy styled top to that dress...it would look better if she were a little more "contained".. I'm not talking pushup bra.. just a little bralette/shelf bra..or even a lightweight sports type bra would look better in this type of T-shirt weight tanktop. The cut of the dress makes her look extra saggy.. and I can imagine that if it were a touch cold.. it would be even LESS modest. For those of us over an A/B cup.. it is also about comfort..not just society.. which to be honest doesn't want to see all that much extra jiggle whether it comes from above.. or below the waist. Just the way it is.

Keep in mind clothes at Madewell/J. Crew are designed for Glamazon women and unless you're super tall, this probably would be quite a bit longer on you. I have a Madewell jersey tank dress that hit above the knee on the model, but hit a few inches below my knees and I'm only 5' 4".
