10 backyard ideas

The weather is finally warming up! As I've mentioned eight million times on this blog, our life goal is to have a backyard, not just a rusty fire escape. So, just for fun, here are nine fun ideas for backyards...
Giant Scrabble pieces. (And above are planters with glow-in-the-dark paint.)
A fire pit for roasting s'mores, playing guitar and gossiping with friends.
Fairy lights to make everything feel magical.
Hot pink paint. (Would you believe this English garden actually started out feeling "dark and damp"?!)
Orange trees (or avocado trees or raspberry bushes) for freshly squeezed OJ, homemade guacamole and toddlers with sticky fingers.
Family swings for straight-up chilling.
And for the kiddos: water play and giant bubbles!

What do you think? Do you have a garden?

P.S. Home inspiration: Painting doors and favorite wallpaper. And having drinks on the fire escape.

On the farm we have several big gardens. And, I just hung up some white lights with Marble Lights from Target on one of the porches. They look great!

I was just browsing through as usual and then I was like, Oh my god...I recognize that firepit. Haha, I work at Sunset! It's part of the outdoor kitchen where the sand volleyball court used to be.

There's no way those light up planters are painted with glow in the dark paint. way to bright! those are electrically lit, for sure. we have a smallish backyard by midwestern standards (at least, the grassy area is small) but that's because the other half of it is taken up by woods and a stream running through, which is so pretty :) and a huge deck. We will be re-doing the deck soon though and plan to add a seating area with fire pit! I love the idea of an orange tree... I wonder if one would survive in Ohio?

We're always looking for ways to turn our drab concrete balcony into a place where we might actually want to hang out with friends. Fairy lights are a must. Also lavender. Lots and lots of lavender. It's beautiful and keeps the mosquitos away.

I used Tineye and tracked down the source of the planters from the first image. They are actually planter lights from German company B&B Vertrieb (site is in German, but you can use Chrome's built-in translator): http://www.gartenmoebel-online-shop.de/Epstein-Pflanzgefaess-Flora-weiss-50-cm.htm

They also come in different shapes and sizes. =)

Goodness, I'd love to be in that garden with the hot pink floor! Have you heard of sun jars? Those are pretty nifty things when they work -- they even have ones which look like fireflies :)

We've got a huge backyard in sunny Malaysia. And believe it or not, peacocks regularly come to visit. We have fun sitting in the patio, drinking a cup of tea, almost every evening.

I have 65 acres... we have a fire pit and a garden.. and a guest cottage made from a retrofitted shed complete with kitchenette and it's own bath. Favorite place to sit is on the front porch bench in the evening looking down the lane at the trees and the dogs and chickens playing!

I am going to have to look into some of these for some inspiration. I want to do some EP Henry stone work and have reached out to the Roxbury Hardscaping Center in NJ to help with some ideas and installation. But I would love to look online to see if anything else inspires me!

Wow, i like it. There are some good ideas here. I've been working all summer with my son to try and fix up our backyard a little. I recently got this great new lawn bagger and it maks things a lot easier after doing outdoor yard work. Thanks for posting!

Wow! All your backyard ideas look amazing! I think my favorite is the retaining walls you set up that lead to the tree house. Or the area that the fire pit is in. I am redoing my backyard currently so these pictures have helped give me some great ideas!

I've been browsing the internet for some idea for my labor day bbq. I want to decorate my backyard and maybe do some minor landscaping in order to make room for a fire pit. I visited party city to look for American flags for sale and other patriotic items. Do you have any decorating ideas you could share with me?

I have a yard at home. And I really wanted it to look like one of those in the photos. The problem is it always needs some lawn treatment.
