Do or Don't: Painted doors

Even though we probably won't move until next year, I love daydreaming about our future home. One thing that keeps catching my eye on Pinterest are painted doors. They brighten up the room and would be easy to do. Here are 10 photos...

Three colors that look especially great are black...

Red...

And yellow...

Thoughts? Would you do it? Have you done it? A yellow door leading into a garden would be so cheery!

P.S. My friend's pretty apartment, and two fun decorating ideas: wallpaper and a trapeze!

We painted our front door yellow and now don't own the house, but smile every time we drive by the house and the door is still yellow. I never knew if others liked it much, but I figure if the current owner still has it that way 2 yrs later, the color is validated. I love color. The beige of our rental is killing me.

Yes - and yes to yellow. The Pinterest link doesn't work - are you on there? I'm currently addicted.

We HAVE done this! I painted our front door a shiny laquered red, and it makes me so happy every time I open it and it ALWAYS gets compliments when new friends come over. It was an easy small project but makes such a big impact.

Would love if you checked out my beauty blog post today and let me know what you think of it. I'm a mom (like you!) with a makeup problem...Thanx! Jennifer

I heard somewhere that red doors are good luck. In any case, I love them!

I love painted doors. They can just add such a great pop to a wall or home exterior. It definitely depends on the door and the other colors going on though...sometimes a great stained door can look beautiful with a nice clapboard exterior.

We have a red screen door and it gives our little Craftsman house so much charm. I love it!

I've always thought about my dream house as having a hunter green door with white borders! I love the mustard color though, very unexpected.

Oh my gosh. That yellow door in the first picture made my heart skip a beat. I think I'm in love...

katilda said...

It's always been my dream to have a painted door! There's a quote from the book "the guernsey literary and potato peel pie society" that totally put this idea in my heart...I can't find it online, but it says something like "today I saw a man painting his door sky blue -- perhaps there is an end to war!" I'll have to look up the exact quote in the book when I get home.

Back Row Girl said...

Red color on the door is supposed to bring good luck in Feng Shui teachings. Ours is red, in any case ^_^ Love the judiciously chosen colors, whether on the front door or in the interior.

katilda said...

Oh, I found it! Turns out I recorded it on my own blog long ago, haha -- "A man in a patched jumper is painting the door to his house sky blue ... perhaps there is an end to war." LOVE THAT.

K said...

I agree -- these looks great. Although, I think what makes most of these doors so outstanding is that they are original, old doors with great lines and texture.

Alison @ Ruffles and Ramblings said...

A definite DO! We have a red front door and I love it! It's so cheery!

I love the look! My husband probably wouldn't go for it. He's a woodworker and would be pumped to deck out our entire house with beautiful natural wood furniture, even make a front door for our home!

We painted the door to our patio red, and it's super fun. It's quirky, for sure, but it really gives the room a pop of color. Do it!

Do! Do! Do! I wish I could paint my doors. I would love to have very light grey walls with bright yellow doors!

Leslie @ And Then The Doorbell Rang said...

Yes! Do it! I agree- the yellow looks great.

I have also seen on Pinterest that a lot of people paint the narrow part of the door (the part that is in the door jambs- what else can I call it?!) for a pop of color in interior/hallway doors. I love that idea!

I think when a room is neutral like that a pop of colour in the door is brilliant.

So DO. I also daydream about our future home, hopefully this year! I would love a cobalt blue painted entry door.

my first house was covered with a horrible faux brick asphalt tile... colored grey, beige, marigold yellow, and burgundy. we didn't have money to reside the house at first so i bought burgundy shutters, painted the door and all the window marigold, and added some window boxes. it was adorable, inexpensive, and we got so many compliments on what a difference it made.

i think painted doors can add alot to a room, especially when paired with the white wall fad.

Ashlee Cain said...

So cute! Love the mango colored doors :)

Jenn said...

Go for it!!! I painted the inside of my front door (http://jennnash.typepad.com/blog/2012/11/current-state-of-living-in-the-new-house.html) and it makes me happy every time I see it. The walls and trim are now white and the blue door looks so sharp and happy.

KKat79 said...

Hrm, just strip the edges before adding more paint if they've already been painted...many of the doors in our house stick because they have so many layers of paint. Then they look terrible because the paint just gets rubbed off on the thick spots where they hit the frame.

But I do love cheery doors - our back door is a beautiful shade of bright yellow! Check out Fine Paints of Europe's Dutch door page - to die for:)

Jana Miller said...

Do! I choose yellow :)

fancyalterego said...

I would love to do something like that someday! Now, I'm not sure I'd be so keen on answering the door and finding a COW waiting patiently...haha...but give me a yellow door, and I'll learn to love the idea. ;-)

I love painted doors. I grew up with a red one.

Kyle said...

A red door, like red shoes, puts a spring in my step.

Our front door is barn red, which brightens the front of our white house. Our back door is a warm brown on the outside, mossy green on the inside to match our kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Our interior doors are painted white to match the woodwork. Our daughter painted the raised panels of her six panel closet and bedroom doors the same dark blue as her walls and with white trim, has a very nautical look.

Amanda said...

Absolutely! Once I find out if I'll be able to stay in my apartment another year or longer, I fully intend to paint the doors.

Anna said...

Yes! I love painted doors and I've been wanting to paint my front door a deep orange for a while now. I'm renting, so I probably won't, but I've even thought of buying a replacement door just so that I can paint ours (and put in a doggie-door!). I love the idea of a bright pop of color among all the neutrals.

Katherine Fugit said...

I say yes. I would paint ALL OF THE DOORS if I could. We painted the doors in our 1917 home black http://keepsmilinghome.blogspot.com/2011/10/in-black.html and then it was featured on Apartment Therapy and people fuh-lipped! No joke. I had no idea it was sacrilege to paint wood. Sheesh! Now I paint doors out of spite, go figure!

Oh, I love the yellow doors! Painted door are one of those things that really make a house YOURS. Surprisingly for me, that black door looks really cool too!

Beth E. said...

We have a gorgeous red door. I wouldn't change it for the world. I do think it is important that your house fit in with your neighborhood and a yellow front door would stick out. A back door could be fun though. Having your house stick out can really get your neighbors angry. Someone on our street painted their trim cobalt blue and the neighborhood made such a fuss that they painted it white again.

SincerelySammie said...

I LOVE painted doors! Especially if it's a happy color. There's no better way to enter a home.

JeNifer said...

a total DO! also applies to closet doors! we recently repainted our office a plain white color, which is so not me.... but because we're photographers and need to avoid color casts on our computer monitors, white was the way to go! I've been thinking of ways to jazz it up a bit in small ways. And painting the door a bold color - like yellow - is a good idea! I also have to say I do like the black door too! a black & white room.... hmmm. :)

Emily said...

Oh absolutely do! I really love how black doors bring a room together, and yellow doors are so bright and lovely!

There are 2 qualities of wood - paint (i.e. crummy) quality and stain (good) quality. Painting a stain quality door is a crime. Or at least it should be!!

I've never considered this idea before. It's great because it really makes everything around the door pop. I want to try this for my future home :) My favorite would be a soft yellow or coral blend.

definitely, a do if you have the right kind of house for it! It wouldn't work on our 1960's split level or in our neighborhood so I'm jealous of everyone who gets to have fun. Maybe on our back door! lol

I do love these doors, but... I don't really get the "do or don't?" thing. I'm pretty sure all doors are painted unless they are just stained natural wood, which is relatively rare. Maybe you mean "colorful doors." (For the record all of my exterior doors are bright red, to go with white clapboards and black shutters.)

Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see more paint doors in Victoria, BC. What a great way to add a bit of color. I love this!

My Dad's house always had an orange front door when I was growing up, and it turns out my best friend's dad did too. And we found that so odd, because our dads couldn't be more different than each other, but seeing an orange door meant the same thing to both of us. (She even wrote her college entrance essay about it... and got in :)
