Babymoon weekend: St. Lucia

This past weekend, we took a three-day babymoon getaway to St. Lucia, which was a ridiculously beautiful and amazing place! Here are a few photos, if you'd like to see...
We stayed at the fantastic Sugar Beach resort, which I would highly recommend. As soon as we arrived, the New York stress melted off our shoulders, as we were lulled by the warm breezes and the singing of tree frogs and crickets (and fruit bats!)...
If I had a hotel, the #1 thing I would do is greet guests with a drink as soon as they arrive. It's the AWESOMEST way to start a vacation. As we rolled up to the hotel, a waiter greeted us with these coconut drinks, which tasted like milkshakes. We asked him for the recipe, and he revealed the secret combo: coconut milk, coconut cream, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
We dropped our bags in our room and immediately headed to the beach. We had a stack of books we were excited to read—this for me, this for Alex and this for both of us—but took forever getting around to opening them. We kept saying, "Okay, I'm going to read now," but ten minutes later, we'd still be gazing at the water.
When we returned to our room around sunset, we munched on plantain chips with mayonnaise-y dip.
Back inside, we also realized that they had UNPACKED OUR BAGS! It was so fancy, we couldn't believe it. There was even a drawer with our underwear!
The hotel staff was warm and friendly, and every day they'd leave little notes for us written in leaves. The first day's note said, "Welcome!" The second day's note said, "Have fun, Alex and Joanna." And the third day, "Happy Babymoon" along with a card and balloons. How sweet is that?
The next morning, we took a "tuk tuk" from our room to the main hotel restaurant. (You take these colorful shuttles everywhere, since the hotel grounds are super steep.)
For breakfast, Alex ordered French toast with caramelized bananas, and I got pastries and the refreshing local specialty: sour orange juice.
After breakfast, we relaxed at the beach, when a sweet and sort of nutty old man came by and offered us a raw coconut to drink. Of course, we said yes, and he started hacking away.
Then he asked me to hold the coconut for a photo, but when he held up his knife, I suddenly got freaked out that he was going to joke around by chopping at the coconut. Despite smiling, I was totally in fight-or-flight mode! Haha...obviously, nothing happened:)
Delicious.
We also spent some time lazing by the pool, which looked up at the mountains. You can actually take a two-hour climb up the largest Piton mountain, but we decided to just chill:)
Our big adventure each day was going kayaking and snorkeling. The hotel offered free kayaks and snorkeling gear on the beach, so we'd just paddle out and around and just chat leisurely out on the water.
On our final day, we were psyched to get a couples massage. We expected the spa to be indoors, of course, so we were amazed when the reception area opened up into winding paths and tree houses!

Finally, the last night, before dinner, we walked down to the beach to see the sunset. The beach was always bustling during the day, but that final night, we somehow had the beach to ourselves. We sat in the comfy chairs, our legs intertwined, and just chilled. The warm pink air felt like a hug, and it was one of those moments we'll never forget.
A HUGE thank you to my mom for taking care of sweet Toby! He did really well, and we covered him with a million kisses when we got home. (We also brought him a mango lollipop.) The whole experience was such a treat.

Have you been to St. Lucia? If you're looking for a romantic escape—or babymoon or honeymoon—I'd recommend it a thousand times over. Thank you so much for reading! xoxo

kadyanna, thanks for your comment! we actually paid our way ourselves. we decided to splurge on a fancy hotel because we were going for only three days and this will be our last romantic getaway for quite a while, since the new baby arrives this summer:)

I am so glad you had a good time! I am 99% certain that's the villa we stayed in in October for our honeymoon!! Also, the shuttles have been majorly upgraded, they were industrial diesel golf carts a few months ago, but the drivers are just delightful!

STUNNING!!! And the folks at the resort seem so friendly and welcoming. :)

What a beautiful trip! And how sweet of the staff to decorate like that, it's the little things that really make the difference in hotel stays.
Our first anniversary is in October and I've already started pushing for St Lucia haha.

Wow Joanna, beautiful photos! It looks like such a magical time for you and Alex. This might sound cheesy, but your love for each other shines out of your smiles like sunlight! I'm really happy for you and your sweet family. :)

So beautiful thank you for sharing! I love the look on your face standing next to the guy with the knife, when I saw the picture and read what you wrote I laughed out loud because a) I can totally see it in your body language and b) I got the exact same feeling! LOL

Sounds like a fabulous trip! I don't know if the pictures were posted chronologically but you guys look like such New Yorkers at the start of it; wearing your dark colours and looking a little overwhelmed by the beach and scenery. But by the end of it, you guys look much more relaxed and comfortable in the sun. :)

We've never been there, but it's definitely going on the travel bucket list now! Glad to hear you had fun, and that Toby enjoyed his time with grandma!

Is it weird that I was waiting to find out what kind of lollipop you got him? Because I totally was...the suspense was killing me! :-)

Ashley said...

Looks like you had an amazing time!! I'm so glad! (I was a little nervous after recommending it that you'd come back with some horrible story--even though I knew the chances were slim to none!) I also just went back and re-read our travelogue and it's SO funny to see the difference of traveling with a couple vs a six month old so starkly. Glad someone got to try the kayaks! ;) Can't wait to hear more. xo

oh this looks so lovely! We will have to go someday. We just booked our honeymoon for the Amalfi Coast and Capri - we are staying in La Minerva because of your recommendation :)

Stephanie Tuer said...

Joanna - we stayed at the same place for our honeymoon - as a matter of fact - it looks like we may have been in the same villa! We splurged a bit (ok, a lot!) and did the all inclusive option, but it was well worth it. Did you get a chance to have a fancy dinner in the great room?

Tracey said...

So glad you had such a wonderful time! You both look so great, and so relaxed! Love the picture of you with the Coconut Man. His shirt is awesome. It totally blew my mind how well those guys wielded their machetes! Scary!

(And also, in regards to your comment about the Piton mountain climb... We did that climb in November on our honeymoon, and it was the hardest thing I did since running the Chicago Marathon in 2011... So, so worth it though!)

anniecardi.com said...

Oh my gosh, my husband and I stayed at a resort just up the mountain from there! Sugar Beach allowed guests from our resort to use the beach, so we were down there for a bit. The most beautiful spot in the world! Glad you guys had a great time.

Sounds like the perfect getaway! I've been to St. Lucia once before, but on a sailing charter through a company called The Moorings. It was breathtaking, but also pretty intense at times. We went in January when they experience "Christmas Winds" which are reinforced trade winds caused by a high pressure system in the Atlantic colliding with a low pressure system in the Caribbean (basically chaos!). Sailing in 45 knot winds some days wasn't exactly relaxing (plates broke, my sisters threw up, I thought if my mom went over board we'd never see her again because she in't a really strong swimmer...), but it was definitely an adventure! And beautiful! I'm glad you found some time to relax and enjoy each other's company!

I rarely ever comment, but I have to say YES we went to St Lucia for our babymoon (our fourth baby!) and stayed at Ladera which was sooo awesome. It has three walls, with one completely open air to the Pitons. It was pricey but amazing (and sooo erotic!). And the food at Ladera was fabulous! They didn't have beach access, though so we'd go to this beach where you stayed. Seeing the pics brought back memories... :)

I love the pics! Your baby belly is totally adorable. It's so great that the two of you got to get some time to yourselves before it becomes the four of you. It's very exciting! I hope your posts don't slow too much once baby comes. I love reading.

My fiance and I were kind of bummed to decide to postpone our honeymoon. Wedding's June 1st, and it's just not in the budget to take a luxe trip for two weeks. However, come January or February, it's a whole new ballgame. I think we'll have to check this place out! So, thanks for the inspiration.

We stayed at the same resort a few years ago when I was just three months pregnant (an early babymoon of sorts!).

You made the right decision not to hike to the top of the Grande Piton. We did it and regretted it! It was billed as a "nature walk" but was so steep and difficult we wished we'd just stayed on the beach gazing at the water! Plus, hiking in rain forest conditions? Sweaty doesn't even begin to cover it.

Can't wait to go back :)

Reading this&seeing the photos is bringing back such memories -I lived in St Lucia for a year doing some volunteer work. It was amazing, but seems like a dream now! It's the only place I've ever been where the sea turns pink. Beautiful. So glad you enjoyed!!

It looks lovely - I may look into it. Funny - I've never heard of a babymoon before, although it seems others have. Of course, I had my babies 38 and 35 years ago...no one I knew who were having babies back then had any money to spend on such a lovely vacation!

Kristin Dennis said...

What a beautiful trip! I'm also pregnant (27 weeks) with my second and I gotta tell ya: I don't really get the babymoon thing. If I'm going to splurge on a romantic getaway with my husband, I don't want to be pregnant or nursing! These days, I'd be just as happy taking a nap on the couch than sitting on a beach (probably happier because I wouldn't have shove myself into a bathing suit.)
