Offbeat wedding shoes

What kind of shoes did (or would) you wear to your wedding? I wore basic pink flats, but here are 7 fun ideas...
The top photo shows yellow flats, and these pale pink patent oxfords are such a cool choice...
Braided sandals with beautiful henna...
Red rainboots were a last-minute choice for a drizzly day...
Vintage boots at City Hall...
Cowboy boots to walk out to Point Bonita lighthouse...
...and classic Hunter rainboots.

Would you wear any of these? How about a colorful wedding dress?

P.S. This is an exciting week for marriage (fingers crossed).

I wore yellow flats and I remember that picture you included being an inspiration for me. It's fun to change things up!

I love these! I wore dark red velvet mary jane's - "Chinese shoes" is what i called them in elementary school. My dress was off white with a dark red sash - I got it on Etsy! Our wedding was outdoors in our vineyard, so not too formal. The shoes were comfy all night long!

Adorable! I'm a little in love with the blingy Ferragamo pumps my little sister wore: http://www.fivetdsisters.blogspot.com/2012/09/notes-from-indian-bride-part-1.html

i wore a eucalyptus green dress with yellow shoes, so yes on both counts. :)

Yes, absolutely! I would wear those yellow flats or the vintage boots for sure! (In fact, now you have me pining for those JCrew yellow flats... sigh).

love these pictures! I wore green rainboots for the outdoor pictures portion (it was pouring all day) & then wore white lace TOMS for the ceremony and reception. both pairs made for some fun pictures. :)

OK, sad side note on your marriage link to the NYT's....I don't know about exciting. I am so disappointed that they are going to shut it down more than likely. But I loved seeing Facebook turn red in support of equal marriage rights! I had a bride wear her cowboy boats, and she looked so darling, it had a heart stitched into the shaft!!! www.kateuhryphoto.com

I love these! The oxfords are adorable. I wore strappy sandal flats from Gap that cost all of $18--but they were sturdy and comfortable for all walking and dancing that happened on our big day. The nice thing is that I've worn them every summer since, and it's like they have a Cinderella effect on me--every time I wear them, I'm taken back to the fanciness of that day!

Mary Kate said...

Fingers crossed, though it's ridiculous that giving equal rights to all people is even still an issue...

my husband and i actually went barefoot and had our ceremony outside in the grass, in the Rocky Mountains. it was so awesome feeling the grass between our toes. :)

I wore dark purple chuck taylors. My mother was horrified, but they got such a great reaction from our guests that eventually she agreed that they were a good choice. And I had the most comfortable feet on the dance floor!

I have 2 pairs of shoes! A blush satin wedge with a bow at the open toe for the ceremony and blush pair of ballet flats with a pink glitter cap toe! My dress is tea-length so the shoes are super important!

I wore a pair of jcrew suede mary jane heels in mustard yellow. I know that description sounds TERRIBLE but they were perfect for my outdoor fall wedding!

I'm so glad I chose a unique pair of shoes for that pop of color!

The yellow flats actually look cute, the rest not so much. I'm conservative in that respect.

The best shoes for me are NO SHOES! Yup, I got married barefoot in the sand at the beach. My wedding was planned in a matter of 3 days, depending on weather and circumstances. I wore a wife beater and a pretty skirt. For brides who do the traditional bride thing, I think playful shoes are an excellent way to get really individual w/ the look.

We custom- made Chucks for the whole wedding party- The plan was the guys would wear them for the ceremony, and the girls would have them for the reception. But the girls decided they didn't want to try to negotiate our orchard ceremony site in heels, so everyone wore their Chucks for the ceremony and I LOVED it.

No shoes! We got married on the beach in North Myrtle Beach at sunrise June 13, 2009. Funny thing was, my husband was so nervous, he forgot to take his shoes off, so all of our photos are me barefoot and him with brown loafers. In the sand. LOL.

Love it! I wore gold sequined ballet flats - we had a nighttime winter wedding and I wanted something that would "pop" as we danced the night away! My dress was made of a swiss dot fabric for a bit of flair as well.

Kathy said...

I want to wear unique shoes but I can't find any that fit my (very specific) dream! I'd love a pair of spearmint green wedges that are also pretty comfortable since the ceremony will be outside on rocks/grass. The shoes are especially important because I'm wearing a short vintage dress with a spearmint green sash!

Ciara said...

Great choices! I wore electric blue heels with a black and silver flower on them. It was a tea length dress so the shoes had to impress. I changed into gold havianas for dancing :)

I found silver glitter heels on sale while on a layover in Heathrow. I can't wait to wear them for my wedding this summer!

Meadow said...

I find quirky wedding shoes rather irritating. Like sneakers with a wedding dress, or oxfords, etc. What's the point of buying a nice dress when you're ruining it? It's not even that unique to wear "different" wedding shoes anymore since everyone on Pinterest seems to. I'm all for a fun pair of heels or a nice pair of flats (i.e. if the guy is short or the girl can't walk in heels), but I wouldn't stray much further than that.

Amanda S. said...

I wore blue kitty heels with cherubs embroidered on them. Mom actually asked if I was serious the first time she saw them. People either thought they were hideous or fabulous. They made me happy so I didn't care.

I love the oxfords and the rain boots!!! Perfect for Autumn weddings!!!
Joanna, I wanted to thank you for supporting gay weddings. I've seen your profile pic on Facebook. I've been married to my pretty pretty wife for three years now. We got married in Spain, where we came from and where gay marriage is legal for some years now. And we are so happy together that I would love to know that gay couples in the States could be as happy as we are (and get to organize a lovely wedding, wear an amazing dress and enjoy a happy day with their families! Weddings are amazing!).
Thanks again and lots of love!

I wore a tea length ivory dress, lace bolero, and bright purple heels. In fact, the shoes were the first thing I bought - when I saw them, I just knew they were IT for me. I had a bigger "bride moment" when I first tried them on than I did my dress!

I wore mint peep-toe flats under my wedding dress. It was outside, in an area with lots of grass and stairs, and it was incredibly hot! The flats were breathable and functional and adorable. I love them! http://www.amandacravens.com/

I work at a wedding venue on the weekends and I am soooooo tired of brides who think they're super funky or whatever wearing chuck taylors. I love the job and I LOVE seeing people get married (that moment when the bride is about to emerge from the private area and walk down the aisle with her parents is the absolute top, i love it), so I swear I'm not a total critical grumpus buttface. It just really is cliche and boring and not near as charming or original as people think it is.

I've already got my bensimon shoes ready to go. Comfy and cute and should look great with my dress, which I'm trying on next week!

I also had a tea length dress in champagne and wore bright purple heels. We eloped, otherwise i would have required a shoe change. The heels were quite high, but really made the photos pop :). We found a matching tie for my husband and incorporated purple in my flowers and jewlery.

I wish I'd worn T-straps, or at least something with ankle straps, because my something-old cream slingbacks from past bridesmaid duty kept slipping off my feet when we were dancing!

I wore some awesome western boots (my reception was in a barn). I thought they would be comfortable, but I think any shoes rub your feet the wrong way when your standing for 12 hours strait! They made for some fun pictures. So glad I wasn't wearing heels.

I wore traditional white satin heels for the church wedding and immediately changed into quilted, patent red leather peep-toe heels for the reception!

i love this post! i wore black sergio rossi sandals with a huge flower on them, which matched the flower in my hair. i loved that it wasn't the traditional "white on white on white". so much fun!

I love weddings and I love quirky, unique details, but it's become so popular -- you can tell some brides who are really trendy but not necessarily off-beat or quirky have latched onto these endless trends. Scrabble tiles, bunting, chucks, it's starting to seem really overdone, which is kind of a shame. Hard to do anything unique these days!

I'm the lady with the gold sandals and henna'd feet (and the sock lines on my ankles -- oops!). Just have to say that I'm so excited to be included in this roundup, and I would *highly* recommend comfy sandals and/or other flats to any brides-to-be out there. I danced my butt off all evening (and karaoked until 3am!) and my feet were super happy. Funny, though: When I was little I thought I wanted to get married in the rain and wear red galoshes!

Anna said...

Oh, *and* -- forgot to mention that my groom (the cute Indian guy up there) wore offbeat wedding shoes, too. We wore Indian garb for the ceremony, and he chose white Toms instead of the super-uncomfortable traditional shoes that go with the sherwani. (Though he switched into schmancy shoes when we changed into western wear for the reception!)

Beth said...

This is some seriously amazing timing. I got my wedding shoes today and unfortunately I'm now back on the hunt. (Although absolutely gorgeous, I'm just not stable in them and need a smaller heel. More power to you Shawn, because I got the same BHLDN bow-topped slingbacks in blue and I feel like a newborn giraffe in them!)

Now I'm on the hunt for some equally adorable heels. If anyone has some suggestions, toss them on my way!

What a delightful post! I just got engaged so naturally I'm starting to look for my wedding shoes (even before the dress, mind you!) It seems colored pumps have been growing in popularity, so I may go that route, but I have to say, if it's raining (and please keep 'em crossed for us that it won't be!), those darling rain boots would be verrry tempting.

Thank you for sharing!

I wore the shoes that my mom wore at her wedding! Not only were they special, they were actually stylish. They are wedge sandals. Very cute, but very 70's, hippie-ish. :)

I wore a short dress so bright yellow shoes were my big wedding splurge - http://nouba.com.au/louise-greg

It was one of the things I wasn't too sure about - I kept having people saying that you want the dress to be the feature and bright shoes would detract from that. And you know what? I did get just as many comments about my shoes as my dress but I think it was perfect!

Sammy Casey said...

I absolutely LOVE fun and bold shoes on your wedding day. I don't think the shoes will take away from the dress... if anything it will compliment it that much more. If it works for you, I say GO FOR IT!

Yay for crossed fingers! Another thank you, Joanna, for your support! I sort of idolize you, so it means a lot. :)

I love those ideas! Nothi is as hard as findng good shoes for a wedding, because most of the traditional choices are really not that easy on the eyes. The red rain boots are being worn by me! I had pale pink sandals as well but wore the rain boots because we got married in the woods and I wouldn't be able to walk around in the heels. It was a last minute decision to bring them along. I thought I'd wear them the days leading up to the wedding and unfortunately for me the days leading up to the wedding were sunny and gorgeous like we were swimming in the lake the day before our wedding and then bam non-stop rain on our special day. So I didn't wear these all night just for the out door photos. For the ceremony I had on the pale pink sandals with chiffon flowers.

There are so many WoW trainers for different wow gold skill professions, such as forging, alchemy, cooking, riding, enchanting, leatherworking, and so on. All of them can help you promote your level efficiently and quickly. Forging is one of the most important wow power leveling skills you need to learn, you can easily make the weapons that you need and you also can make them for selling for gaining more cheap wow gold. The next one important is cooking. Mastering cooking will let you never be hungry and keep health all the time, and this will also save your money. You must gain the precious skills you learn as much as possible and always make sure that you have enough cooking ingredients for ensuring your life.

I wore darling Ann Taylor high-heeled sandals for my June 2007 wedding; I had actually purchased them a year or so earlier to wear with a new sundress, but liked them so much that I made them my "something old". (Dress was new, purse was borrowed, undies were blue.) They were nude suede with a small strap across the toes and around the ankle and heel, with bronze and pink leaf beads sewn onto the toes. Though that night did a number on them (it poured until moments before I walked down the aisle, outside), I still have them.

Well I'm getting married in three weeks in Sicily and I've got these awesome pump heels (not so high, they are like vintage sandals I don't know exactly how to say : ))in a navy blue color. It seems nothing but here in Italy they are very traditional and many brides don't change the classic shoe (ivory, white) jewel. I love colored shoes with the traditional wedding dress because they make everything less dramatic.

Wow ... love it! Different wedding shoes. My favourite are the gumboots! Gives you some great shots ... in rain and at a vintage barn wedding. Not so sure about the flats ... they are good to get around for a photoshoot ... but not that nice in the pics :-)

Wedding shoes are one of the main aspects of a wedding. They should be unique, attractive and comfy for wearing.

The shoe fabric is important thing to think about. It ought to complement the material of your gown, but not necessarily match it exactly. If your gown is made of silk, a silk pump or sandal would surely work.
