This week the New York Times ran a brave and beautiful remembrance of Nora Ephron by her son Jacob Bernstein. It must have been really hard to write. One wonderful passage–of many—was...***
Another thing she requested was a pineapple milkshake, so Max brought one from Emack and Bolio’s, made from fresh pineapple. But as far as my mother was concerned, a milkshake is one thing that’s actually better with crushed pineapple. Dole.
“When I get out of the hospital, I’m going to go home and I’m going to make a pineapple milkshake with crushed pineapple, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream, and I’m going to drink it and I’m going to die,” she said, savoring the last word. “It’s going to be great.”
On this day, I told her some things. After she moved to her bed, I said that sometimes, I thought of the possibility of her not being around and wondered if I’d ever be able to write again. If I’d even want to. And she told me that I would, that I would find it within me, and that whatever happened, she hoped my brother and I would lead the kind of lives where we did stuff big enough to occasionally say, “Wow, I wish Mom was around for this.”

Isn't this amazing? I read it yesterday over breakfast and pondered how wonderfully personal the piece was the rest of the day. I just watched PBS' Special, "Makers: Women Who Make America" this week, and Nora is featured a few times; what a special person she was.
ReplyDeleteI miss Nora Ephron all the time. Just the other day, the PBS documentary Makers featured an interview with her, and I still can't believe she is gone. She was such a light in this world, and her creativity and artistry are things that this world will cherish for generations. I know I will make my kids watch her movies, and that they'll love them. I can imagine me and my daughter watching You've Got Mail together, like I did with my mom when it first came out. And they'll be like, "Why is the internet so slow in that movie?" haha.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read this article. I've been putting off reading Ephron's books because I don't want to run out of her words. As a writer, she still inspires me daily with her charm and wit and vivacity for life.
And now I have to try a pineapple shake. :) Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this. I've been meaning to read some of her books, and this kind of tribute is the push I needed.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece...

ReplyDeleteMy mother and I often speak about Nora Ephron as if she were a friend of our family that passed--so much so that my (new) husband was convinced that we knew were. This piece is lovely and I hope I can pay my mother such a lovely tribute when that moment comes.
ReplyDeleteI read the article last night & I was so touched. She is missed!

ReplyDeleteI just sobbed my way through that article. So heartbreakingly honest.
ReplyDeleteI have a lump in my throat just reading through that article. Thanks so much for linking us to it! I lost my mother-in-law to cancer just last year - she was 54 years old. And those last days in the hospital, waiting for death, are the worst and longest days of all time. But they are some you will never forget. I love how Ephron's son captured that time so eloquently. xo
ReplyDeleteFor Nora fans: Her sister, Hallie, just wrote an essay for Oprah magazine. http://www.oprah.com/spirit/Nora-Ephrons-Mother-Hallie-Ephron-Essay
ReplyDeleteI adored her and miss her. Thanks for sharing this lovely tribute. Made me cry, but in a good way.
