A very wet marriage proposal

Matthew Hartman wanted to propose to his girlfriend Elizabeth, so he stood on a rock at Laguna Beach, ready to play her a romantic song he had written. Watch what happened next...
Yikes! "Soaking wet, I quickly jumped up and said YES," says Elizabeth. And it's sweet that she never stopped smiling.

Here's a video of the whole thing:

How hilarious is that? I'm sure they'll never forget it:)

P.S. More cool proposal stories...

  4. Oh, that is so contrived. She was hardly surprised at the proposal given the fact he is in a suit and just about everyone has a camera on the beach. I think a private, intimate proposal is the best.

    1. Oh, I disagree! I think it's adorable. I think the "best" proposal is one in which both parties are overjoyed, and surely this fits the bill!

    2. I agree. He's in dress shoes basically in the tide pools. It seems awfully contrived to me, though I agree with KJ that to each their own. They're lucky they didn't get slashed up by the rocks!

    3. I so agree! I would have killed my husband if he had done some grand gesture or even proposed in front of someone. He actually did it sitting in the McDonalds drive through. We were waiting to order and he looked over at me and asked. I said yes. It was very sweet. All I needed. We celebrated with fries. The marriage is what counts. The proposal is overblown.

    4. What's wrong with someone spending time planning their proposal? It's thoughtful and sweet that this man spent time planning his proposal. The only thing I see wrong with this is how long it took her to embrace him after they are on the beach!

  8. Amazing. I love that there are as many different types of proposals as there are couples. L seems like this would not be for her, but for this couple it seemed just perfect. I think it's a good sign for their marriage that they started the engagement journey giggling.

    1. Haha - that's what I was thinking! I bet he was FREAKING out about that ring. Haha.

Also, reminds me a little of my proposal. My husband proposed in the woods, and right after I said "yes", the log I was standing on broke and I fell flat on my butt. Lol. I ended up wet and dirty but we laughed and laughed. :)

  14. I heard of a very similar story, except the man got washed out to sea and passed away. Very somber note to this happy story! glad they have their happy ending!!

  20. i grew up (and surfed) on the oregon coast where a rogue wave like that could kill you. this just stresses me out too much to think it's cool! as a photographer, i hate to see photos where the family/couple/baby is put in dangerous situations for "the shot". i hope this was the groom's idea and not the photographers... sorry to be such a downer, i usually hate when people are annoying safety monitors in blog comments, but i couldn't help it with this one. :)

    1. Yeah, I kinda have to agree on this one—to me this is a little scary. Stories have been appearing in the NorCal news over the past few months of people walking their dogs on beaches along the Humboldt coast and getting swept in by rogue waves...often, it seems, the dogs get swept away, the owners panic and go in after them, and end up perishing while the dogs are able to make it back to shore. You know what they say about never turning your back on the ocean.

  23. Hilarious! But I do find it odd that he didn't carry her out of the water or anything, like a gentleman. She looks sort of upset walking away, not even looking at him. He just proposed to you, woman! And it took them a very long time to embrace afterwards ;) Awkward.

  37. Too funny! It actually made for a stunning photo though before the wave crashed down on them.
