Travel-themed week

It's fun to daydream about travel—especially during the winter months—so I'd love to post all about travel this week. The big question is: If you could beam yourself anywhere right now, where would it be? The photo above is from the south of France, and for ages I've also really wanted to go to Portland, which seems like an amazing place. What about you?

P.S. Past travel weeks.

  5. TOMORROW I'm going on vacation with my family to Antigua. My mom had too many glasses (or just the right amount) of chardonnay at a silent auction and surprised the family with a trip! It's been years since I've taken a warm weather getaway with my family and combined with Chicago's epic winter, I'm beyond excited!!

This is my first time taking a trip during this time of year. Other vacations have typically been in summer or fall. I'm thinking this whole winter slump break is the key.

  70. As a former Mainer, I must say that I get annoyed when people just say Portland and don't specify a state! 90% of the time people are talking about Oregon, but Portland Maine is so lovely. Southern Maine would be a great place for a family vacation (in the summer).

I have been wanting to stay in a treehouse hotel in Belize. I think I will be going within the next few months!

If you do go you should plan on going to Multnomah Falls and while you are there get some hot chocolate at the lodge next to the gift shop. Yum. :) Also make sure you go to Screen Door for dinner. DELICIOUS fried chicken and also pulled pork sandwiches!! We went twice over the four nights we were there. :)

  75. I am so jazzed to be doing an extended trip to Granada, Spain (one of my favorite spots in the world!) this summer, to start my Master's program. I can't wait for the heat, the people, the language, the food! I also really miss Portland; I lived there and visit whenever I can.

  76. Ya, I wonder about Portland too! Especially after watching Portlandia, lol. 79. My husband and I live in Portland...and yes, come after July 4th. The end of the summer is magical here. Be sure to eat at Screen Door for brunch or dinner, Gruner, Ox or Clyde Common for dinners that are very Portland- local, seasonal and so delicious. And go explore Hoyt Arboretum, where you can hike/walk through such beautifully varying foliage and take in gorgeous views. And...it's right by the rose garden and zoo!

I want to be in Palm Springs right now!

  81. Portland was by far my most favourite holiday I've ever had. My husband and I went last September and stayed at the Ace Hotel for 5 nights. We ate at Pok Pok, Le Pidgeon, Beast, Olympic Provisions, Lardo, Podnah's BBQ, and Salt & Straw ice cream. We couldn't get over how friendly everyone was, and how inexpensive everything was. Coming from Vancouver B.C., we were shocked at the type of meals you could get for the cost of an average chain restaurant meal back home (We're talking James Beard award winning places!) We also loved the food carts!!! The Big Egg was awesome for breakfast, and the Sugar Cube was great for an after lunch pick me up. Don't miss the Saturday Farmer's Market at the university downtown (best farmers market we've ever been to). Coffee at Stumptown is a must, though there are a million independent coffee shop that were incredible - Public Commons being our fav. I work for an independent book store, so Powell's was a religious experience. We also loved Mississippi Ave. for nerding out over vintage shops and food stuffs. We can't wait to go back this September, it will definitely be our go to holiday spot.

  88. We just came back from Seattle and Portland a couple weeks ago (1st time visiting) and we LOVED Portland! Although I will have to say coming from a very diverse city (I live in San Francisco) Portland isn't as diverse. But after this trip we started watching Portlandia and it summed up the vibe of the city pretty well. :)

The hubs and I have a London and Paris trip booked in May. This is our first international trip together and these two cities are the first ones we'd like to explore together. We are pretty much your average Anglophiles and I have had a mild obsession with England since I was a little girl. Not to mention England is where all my favorite music growing up is from. Hubs have been learning French for a couple years now so we are excited to put those lessons to use. Although we may get rained on a lot I can't wait to see Paris in the springtime!

  98. Do you mean Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine? Hopefully Portland, Oregon, since that's where I'm from! If you're here during the summer (everyone is right about that being the right season), there are a lot of fun cultural things to check out, like the weird hippies openly selling the world's fanciest bongs and henna tattoos at Saturday Market, or our weird Voodoo Donut shop where every donut is given a weirdly vulgar (and delicious) name. And there are beautiful nature scenes to take in (Multnomah falls is wonderful for hiking). But of course, Portland is a MUST if you're a foodie...pok pok, Wafu, Porque No, the Woodsman Tavern, Salt and Straw.... the list goes on and on. You're guaranteed to find authentic, tasty, unique food for an extremely reasonable price. (Also check out the food carts on SE hawthorne! Lavendar honey milkshake, yumm.) And while you're at it, do some shopping--no sales tax!

For more information on portland food, I would recommend searching "portland" in the blog "The Everywhereist." Even though the author of that blog isn't from portland and just writes about her various (and abundant) travel escapades, I (even as a native porltander) use her for good Portland food reviews.

  105. Portland, OR and Oregon in general is absolutely beautiful. I think you guys would love it. If you go, go in June, July or August - the driest months ;) And make time to spend a few days along the Oregon coast.

  106. Africa (South Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania, the Congo) is at the top of my long wanderlust list, but that's a tough one, given that I'm a very pale blonde woman and have been told by a couple of South Africans that I dare not go there without major protection. Sad, I think.

And Sumatra, Indonesia, to visit a coffee plantation and hang out with some of the world's last orangutans. But I may actually be there in a few weeks!

A lot of places I would beam myself to I've already been and am dying to return to: Portugal, Turkey, Costa Rica, Laos.

  124. As all the other posters said, don't come to Portland now, but September/October is amazing.

We're friends of Paul and Lucy's and have a 3 and 2 year old, so let us know if you're coming to town and we'd be happy to get together and show you some of the secret sauce.

  125. Joanna, agreed. Come visit Portland in August/September/October. I swear, I get so depressed in these winter months, but the lovely months in Portland make it SO WORTH IT. Beer, mountains, oceans, perfect temperature, extremely walkable, ENDLESS PRETTY VIEWS. GOD I love this city :)

  128. If you mean Portland, OR please do come between July and September - these are the glorious summer times we all live for during the remaining 9 months of the year. :) And I'd be THRILLED to read about your time here as I'm sure you'll find beautiful places, delicious food and super friendly people.
I'm originally from Lisbon, Portugal and I recommend that city to anyone in the world! :)

  129. I would travel to Trondheim, Norway - great place for cyclists. It's great to tour through the city because they have rental bikes, and well respected trails all around let you enjoy the charming Nordic scenery.
