Amazing mascara

I secretly used to think all mascara was created equal; drugstore brands seemed fine. But recently I was walking down a street in Soho when I saw a sign for the world's best mascara. Intrigued, I stepped into the store to try it out. The mascara was Benefit's They're Real, and after a couple coats, my eyelashes looked ten times thicker and longer. Check out this before-and-after photo of British blogger Charlotte for proof of how well it works...
Have you ever tried it? Crazy, right?

  1. Going to get some today! Happy early birthday to me!

  2. It looks amazing...but is it waterproof? I have the hardest time with mascara staying put. Charlotte's lashes look wow enough that I might give this one a try, though!

  3. I have tried it and it was a disappointment for me. It clumps veeeeeery easily, and I think it ends up looking worse than other brands I've tried. I gave it a solid three months try, and used an eyelash comb religiously to try to negate the clumps. That helped, but I have since found that Bare Escentuals mascara gives me better results without the hassles.

    1. I had the exact same issue. Looks great when you can comb it and make it clump free. I might have to try the Bare Escentuals mascara now!

    2. Interesting! I use Bare Escentuals currently and like it, but thought I'd give this a try when my bottle runs out. I'd like to compare for myself... maybe I'll get the $10 mini bottle to try it out first!

    3. I am with you laides, I hated this mascara! Dried WAY too fast, clumped terribly and looked all brittle!

  4. Wow! I consider myself a mascara-holic. I love it. Even if nothing else goes on in the morning, mascara goes on.

Thanks for sharing! I'll have to give it a try.

  5. It's true it really is the best mascara in the world!! I love it!! Unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range to use it all the time, so I use Maybeline Falsies for everyday & the They're Real for when I need something dramatic!!
& I don't think it's actually waterproof Carly, but it really does stay quite well!

  7. So funny that you're posting about this! A friend recommended it recently and I've been blown away by how much I love it. It's ridiculously good. I don't have any issues with clumping, in fact I think the brush is the best I've used. I love that it has little distribution spikes at the END of the wand. I was a Lancome Definicils loyalist for a long time, but Benefit's They're Real is above and beyond. It stays put *fairly* well but is not waterproof.

  10. Huh. I've tried what feels like millions of mascaras (probably not accurate, but hey, you get the idea) and my all-time favorite is Maybelline Full N Soft. I just think it's perfect. But honestly, those photos are kind of insane and amazing. I may have to give this a try.

  12. This is my all time favorite mascara! BUT.. I only use it on "special occasions" because it never comes off afterward and leaves big black stains under my eyes when get out of the shower! :(

    1. i use coconut oil to remove my eye make up, melts it right off whether it is waterproof or not. you will probly spend $6-8 dollars for a jar of it and it will (not exaggerating here) last two years. also, since it is natural it doesn't burn your eyes at all if a little gets in.

  13. Drugstore mascaras can be great, too! Since they don't last very long, I prefer drugstore to high-end. Personally, I'm loving Maybelline's The Falsies mascara--it makes my short, thin lashes look amazingly thick, long and dark--almost like false lashes! But that said, I do love Fiberwig and Buxom if I'm going high end.

  17. i got a box from benefit for christmas and among other goodies there was a sample (or a travel version?) of this mascara. I was really intrigued and hoped it would work miracles as my lashes are really short and straight. Well, I wasn't maybe that disappointed but i wouldn't call a miracle what i saw after the application either. Plus it's rather hard to remove which i find annoying. On the other hand it stays on and on and on as no other mascara i've ever used (and i've tried quite a range of these: from cheap dragstore ones to expensive YSLs, Diors and Lancomes). I guess i'm still on the lookout to find M(asca)R(a) RIGHT but in the meantime i would still give this one another try.

  18. This seems to be exactly what my tried and true Maybelline does to my eyes! It's the only drug store beauty product that I remain true to.

    ReplyDelete
  19. After a number of recommendations I tried 'they're real' and have liked it although it seems a lot like the mascara I was previously using by Clinique. 'Theyre real' is waterproof, almost too waterproof for my liking! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I thought the same thing when I first bought this mascara. I was ammazed how much it amplifies your lashes! But it also has a tendency to get clumpy and look a little "spidery". And you can't get it off.. Not without work anyway.

My new favorite, is BUXOM by Bare Escentuals (I don't know if anyone mentioned it previously or not) but it is amazing and I can't recommend it enough. The results are very similar, and it is not waterproof, which is a huge plus for me.

I suppose by that same token, if you do prefer waterproof, "They're Real" would be the perfect option for you :)

  24. Thanks for this tip. I got a sample of a Tarte marcara that I really like so when the sample ran out I bought the larger size but unfortunately it feels like a different product and I'm not please with it at all. 27. I've been using this for the last 6 months based on a friend's recommendation. I do love how it goes on but WOW this mascara is impossible to get off!! So many eyelashes fall off because you have to really scrub to remove it each day, it's really sad. And if you leave it on, the next day's re-application is not good (clumpy, strange). I want to love this mascara, but I think I really need a good remover first.

  45. I'm getting my birthday sample from sephora in the mail tomorrow :) So i will see how it works for me. But I really love Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes (the one with the little heart-shaped brush) I have tried dior, estee lauder, clinique, l'oreal, almay, etc... and I always go back to great lash lots of lashes. It grabs tiny lashes and big lashes, and you can build your lashes up, it doesn't ever clump for me, and.... IT'S CHEAP :) Win, win, win :)

  57. I love this mascara but find it can get clumpy after two coats. I use Bobbi Brown Long Wear mascars during the day and keep the sample size "They're Real" in my bag for an extra coat when I'm heading out after work. They're a perfect combination.

  62. This mascara is my favorite! Yes, it can get clumpy, but I feel like that comes down to how you apply it. It definitely makes my lashes longer than any other mascara I've ever used, including those double ended mascaras. It's definitely worth the price! Also, I've found that cheaper drugstore mascaras tubes dry out much quicker and don't last as long.

  71. I tried this, and although I thought it was great on, I also disliked the giant black smudges it left after showering. I did find the secret to taking it all off (since most eye make-up removers irritate my eyes), I use face lotion. I'm not sure how much of a secret lotion is, but I hadn't ever known about it until my make-up artist friend used it on me a couple years ago.

To make my life easier, I switched to my other favorite mascara: MAC's Zoom Fast Black Lash. It may not extend the same, but it goes on a little fuller than the Benefit's one, and it doesn't smudge after the shower.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I might try it someday, but I have a hard time justifying expensive mascara since you have to replace it more frequently than other makeup.

My eyelash trick: a teeny tiny dab of lotion on my fingers, which I spread onto my lashes, then curl, then mascara. It keeps the mascara from clumping and makes it a little more dramatic.

Over the last few months, I've been replacing all my old makeup (as it runs out) with Benefit products. The first time I fell asleep with their Oxygen Foundation on (not proud but it happens!) my skin actually felt SOFTER in the morning. Bananas. Love their products!

I find it very difficult to wash off at the end of the day and I even use an eye makeup remover (which usually does the trick btw). I recently took the masacara on vacation and only applied it the first day because I couldn't get it off otherwise - and this was not a good thing!

  84. mascara and blush are all i wear since mascara seems to be a real workhorse in transforming you to a more finished look---but i definitely get the crazy cheap stuff at target...maybe i'll take a dip in the mascara luxury pool and try this one out. benefit always has the prettiest marketing and packaging, that alone should make it quite the treat...

  101. It does do amazing things to your lashes! I used it for a few months last year. But I could not stand the eye irritation that came along with it. Super difficult to get off, itchy eyes, ugh. Finally the company I work for, Lush Cosmetics, came out with a mascara without all the chemical crap in it, and now I'm hooked on that. All of us were skeptical of how well a natural mascara would actually work (especially since we're all Benefit/MAC junkies), but it's pretty great!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love Benefit Cosmetics with my whole entire heart but I cannot get behind this mascara. I use their primer, Brow-Zings, blush, High-Brow, High-Beam, Sun-Beam, Watts Up, and a slew of other Benefit stuff but not their mascara despite trying it many times. It just doesn't work for me. I feel like it needs 3-5 coats to get the volume and at that many coats, clumps are everywhere. My mascara of choice is Neutrogena Healthy Volume, water-proof. One coat does the trick and at $8 a tube, you can't beat it. Since it does take a while to go through the tube, sometimes after a few weeks it will get a little clumpy. At this time, I put about 3-5 drops of saline/contact solution in the tube and "stir" with the wand and it's fixed.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I've read a lot of reviews of this mascara, and it seems that the majority agree it has a major issue with clumping. I think i'll avoid it because that is my pet peeve with mascaras!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I used to have a hard time removing my mascara (all kinds of brands!) and losing lashes because of it until I picked up a bottle of jojoba oil from Trader Joe's. The $6 bottle will last me forever! I just use four drops a night and it takes off waterproof 24hr eyeliner, smokey eyes, and all of my mascara. No stinging, no raccoon eyes, no chemicals! As for mascaras, I like a dramatic look so I combine one layer of Rimmel's lash accelerator under Revlon's 3d photoready and I'm a happy person for the day.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I have used almost every mascara out there and the only one that doesn't make my eyes clumpy or look like a tarantula is maybelline's full and soft. That stuff is like putting silk on your eyes.

    1. Yes!! I've only read one other person mention this brand but I have to agree, it is the best. No clumping, no brittle feel, no smudging, easy to remove, and it makes your lashes look thick, long, and voluminous. Seriously all you could want in a mascara. I don't understand why more people haven't realized its greatness!

But my all time favorite forever and ever is Maybelline's Full and Soft. It is honestly the best I've tried. No clumping, no brittle feel, no smudging, easy to remove, and it makes your lashes look thick, long, and voluminous. Seriously all you could want in a mascara. I don't understand why more people haven't realized its greatness!

  109. Hi Joanna!

I mostly buy everything you recommend and it has always been great (NARS niagara, bare minerals make up, NARS heat wave...) so i'll give this one a chance as well. I've also hear the pore-fessional by benefit is also a hit!

Thank you so much for sharing!

  110. This is my go-to mascara as of late. And I usually only buy drugstore brands bc I've never been impressed by expensive department store brands. This one delivers though!

  113. I totally agree, Benefit's They're Real is a GREAT mascara! It doesn't only give great long and full lashes, but also lasts a long time even it a humid climate! I hate waterproof mascaras, so They're Real is the perfect product for me. :)

  114. I love this mascara!! I discovered it about six months ago. I used to save up to buy mascara by Chanel for $55, but have since switched to this cheaper option. I thought I was the only one that was in on this little secret!

  116. I'm like you - I've always believed that there wasn't a big enough difference in mascaras to upgrade from my drug store brands! That picture you posted doesn't lie, though! I'm definitely going to rush out and buy this! (PS I've been curling my eyelashes every morning since your post about eyelash curlers!)

  117. I wonder whether it'll do the same job for sparse non-existent asian lashes like mine.

  118. Hey! I recently bought this and was rooting hard for it- I wanted it to work- but sadly it doesn't hold a candle to my Lancome Hypnose mascara. When I washed my face, it was like taking tar off :(
