34th birthday

Yesterday was my 34th birthday, and, I have to say, it was one of my favorites. We just celebrated in a low-key family way, and it was so nice. First, on Wednesday night, Alex took me to see the The Book of Mormon. Our friend (who actually happens to be Mormon) helped us get discounted house seats through her friend who works for the play. When we showed up, we realized we were sitting fifth row center! We were so close, we could see the sweat on the actors' faces; it was crazy.
Look how beautiful the boxes were on the sides of the theater...
The play was absolutely hilarious, and the acting was fantastic. Jon Stewart said the play was "so f**king good it makes me angry," which seemed about right. We had smiles plastered on our faces the whole time.
The next morning, my brother and his French girlfriend Audrey came over for breakfast. She recommended Bien Cuit, a new bakery in our neighborhood...
...so we headed over there for delicious pain au chocolat and carrot bread. (Toby preferred the former:)
That evening, Alex and I went to Junoon, a fancy Indian restaurant in the Flatiron district.
The food was exploding with flavor. We had crispy cauliflower, fried paneer cheese and duck meatballs just to start, and then shared lentil-encrusted mahi mahi and lamb shank braised for five hours.
During dinner, Alex surprised me with a handmade Mason Pearson brush. I've wanted one ever since Caroline explained that the boar bristles evenly distribute your hair's natural oils to make it extra shiny. Plus, every woman in my family had one growing up—my mom, my aunts, my grandmother—so in a funny way, it feels like I've finally grown up. :)

  5. Happy Belated Birthday! My mom used to have a boar bristle brush growing up and I remember being so freaked out that it came from a pig. :) (Are they really that kind of boar? I still don't know!) I do remember my hair feeling luxuriously soft when she had finished brushing it, though!

  54. What a wonderful birthday! The Book of Mormon is absolutely hilarious and I am dying to see it again. My mom gave me a Mason Pearson brush for one of my teenage birthdays and I have treasured it ever since (my parent's dog chewed on the handle so now it has its own character). I will hopefully have a girl of my own one day that I can gift a Mason Pearson brush to. They are the BEST!

  68. Now that seems like a fantastic birthday all around! Joyeux anniversaire! A little late but well-meant from one of your readers but non-commenters. You have enough already as it is!!

For me, my mid-30s were my absolute favorite time. I spent my 35th bday on safari in Botswana after having wrapped a photo shoot with my honey for Apple. I felt at the top of my game and "bien dans ma peau" as they say here in France--I still do but do not quite agree that the 40s are the new 30s--so please enjoy the amazing life that you have worked so hard to build! It is a wonderful moment to be in...

  71. The Mormon Church's response to the play was very generous - not combative at all. I wonder, if the writers of the play had done something similar by making a vulgar and crass play about the Holy Qu'ran and the Prophet Mohammed, would they and the actors even still be alive today? Or would they just be living in fear in another country under false identities?!

and now that you've seen the play, you should read the book! i can attest to how great and life changing it is. you can get a free copy of the Book of Mormon here: http://mormon.org/free-book-of-mormon . (straight from the Church, so it's legit). and i just want to say that real Mormon missionaries are actually pretty cool guys and girls!

  85. Happy Birthday! My family and I snagged tickets to see Book of Mormon with the original cast when it first came out because Matt and Trey were promoting it on the Daily Show and we saw that and said "A musical about Mormons written by the creators of South Park? How could this NOT be good??" So we bought tickets before it blew up and got our pick - we chose front row of the loge, dead center (imo the best seats in the house). We all loved it! We met the cast outside afterwards too, it was a really fun evening :)

  109. Happy Birthday!
You and your family are adorable. You are talented and I have enjoyed so much of your blog.
That is a very sweet story about the brush.
I have a big lump in my throat because at first I was excited to see the statue of the prophet Moroni. Then, I read and looked further. It does look like a beautiful theater but it also looks like it was made to be similar to some of our Temples and the mural of the stars and planets looks much like the mural on the walls of part of the second floor inside of our visitor center in Salt Lake City which surrounds a beautiful Christus statue. My husband, a son and a daughter all served voluntarily as missionaries, to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to serve the people (who they grew to love) in the areas in which they served. It wasn't easy or cheap. I have read, re-read and love; the real book, "The Book of Mormon". Just thought to add a different perspective.

  111. Hi Joanna, happy (very) belated birthday! I'm traveling to NYC in less than a month for the first time and am most excited about my Book of Mormon tickets! I have a very important question, though: what should I wear? I truly have no idea as to what is appropriate (for me or my man). Any input would be so appreciated!
