Do or Don’t: Dark red lipstick

My friend Caroline recently posted a few instagram photos of herself wearing dark red lipstick. How gorgeous and sultry does that color look? It would look beautiful on a winter evening or a date to a cozy restaurant.

The trick is to choose a color that has enough red and isn't so dark that it looks scary. Caroline's color is sold out, but two other fantastic colors are the burgundy MAC Diva (below left), and the black cherry NARS Terre de Feu (below right):
Thoughts? Would you wear dark red lipstick?

P.S. Caroline's 14 hair tutorials, and more do or don'ts.

  1. I have been looking for a great dark red lipstick. The '90s are coming back... remember Chanel's "Vamp"?

  2. I love the look, it's a gorgeous night time look.

  3. After another post you did on red lipstick last fall I picked up the NARS matte pencil but in Cruella (Terre de Feu wasn't my color). I now feel naked without my red lipstick!!!

  4. I think it completely depends on the person!! Your friend looks great with it and I'm so jealous she got to meet Jim Gaffigan!! =)

I personally think I look too gothic unless the red is more lightish! =)

  5. Wow. That colour looks great on her! I think this look is better on people with a substantial top lip (ie. not me). Haha

  6. I think anyone with the right lips can carry off red lipstick. If you tend to have thin lips, red lipstick makes your mouth look like a thin red line...instead of a pouty one.

  7. Lately I've been all about dark red lipstick. I've gotten out of the habit of wearing eye makeup, so putting on a dash of red lipstick has been an easy and fun way to still feel a little bit glamorous.

  9. in my blogger profile pic i'm wearing dark red! i love it (my mom says it makes me look "older" than i am.. i think she's nuts) i'm wearing revlon colorstay overtime in stay currant. it's the most fabulous stain i've ever used. does... not... come... off! have to use makeup remover to get the stuff off. and that's why it's so amazing...

  11. I love ALL shades of red on the lips! I really think it's hard NOT to look fabulous with a pop of red color on the lips. Here's my favorite lip lacquer that my friends and I have become obsessed with!

  12. I think it will be like skinny jeans for me. When they first came back in style I thought - ew! 80's! no! But now I love mine and don't wear bootcut or straight very often anymore.

So maybe I'll come to like it? I'm not sure. I saw the otherwise gorgeous Kaley Cuoco at the Golden Globes, and I'm not sure it was because she had on such a pale dress, or if it's because she did a dark eye too, but her dark lips really grossed me out! There's definitely a way to make it look good, like your friend, even if it's not for me!

    1. When I saw this topic title, I thought of her immediately and was nervous the photos Joanna used would elicit the same response as Kaley Cuoco's look did -- scary! [Sorry to doubt you Jo!] I agree, I think because she did the dark eye and dark lip, plus her lip color had more black in it, did not like at all - unlike the photos above, especially Kate Bosworth ... love!

  15. Those reds are beautiful but so are those lips. I am afraid I would look insanely crazy if I wore red but my friend wears nothing but red all the time and she looks great in it. Makes me want to try again but I suppose I won't. : )

  16. Do! I discovered lipstick a few years ago while playing at Sephora. Never considered myself a lipstick gal but now I love it. Personally, I'd wear the deep red in the fall and winter, but I do think it's beautiful. Looking forward to busting out my pinks and corals for spring/summer :)

  17. definitely a do! deep red is so lovely to wear right now!

  18. is it okay to point out that your friend, Caroline is drop dead gorgeous and could probably pull off anything?! I got some great advice from a consultant when trying on lipsticks about picking the right tone of red based on your skin color, she said anyone can wear any shade of red as long as it matches your skin tone!

  26. I would love to see this dark lipstick on a normal person :) I agree that Caroline is gorgeous and could pull anything off. I would without a doubt look goth with any dark lipstick. But, love this look on blonds/light brunettes.

  27. I would totally wear it...if I planned to never show my teeth. I absolutely LOVE how it looks in every single one of these pictures...but none of them are smiling with their teeth showing. Every time I see the teeth of someone wearing dark lipstick they just look so dingy & dirty... :(. Even famous people..who have really really white fake looking teeth..idk, I just haven't seen it work out well for anyone yet.

  28. DO !! I believe one can pull anything off as long as one is comfortable with it: dark liptsick, blue lagoon mascara, or really blond hair dye, anything !
I actually wear a lot of NARS's Scarlett Empress, it's a dark fushia-ish lipstick, it makes you look like you bit grape, it's really pretty ! Every NARS lipsticks look good anyway :)

I personally would be a little scared to do it, particularly in mascara and I think I'd look to evening-y, if you know what I mean. Perfect for a glamourous night out or formal event though, daytime, but that's mainly because I tend to wear eyeliner and and it looks so sophisticated!

I have NARS Terre de Feu, and, while it is a beautiful colour, I have found that it doesn't stay on my lips for very long at all, even with multiple layers and a brush application.

  96. Dark red lipstick is a definite YES!
There's something so glamorous and fabulous about it. Unlike the bright, bold classic red, dark red is more seductive and a teensy bit more on the dark side. To me, dark red is an amazing color for the colder months as well as for more fancy occasions.

I personally have yet to truly experiment with dark red lipstick but until I do, I'll have to be content seeing all the pictures of gorgeous girls wearing it!
Caroline definitely is too stunning and could probably pull off anything she tried!
