My friend Caroline recently posted a few instagram photos of herself wearing dark red lipstick. How gorgeous and sultry does that color look? It would look beautiful on a winter evening or a date to a cozy restaurant. The trick is to choose a color that has enough red and isn't so dark that it looks scary. Caroline's color is sold out, but two other fantastic colors are the burgundy MAC Diva (below left), and the black cherry NARS Terre de Feu (below right):
Thoughts? Would you wear dark red lipstick?P.S. Caroline's 14 hair tutorials, and more do or don'ts.

I have been looking for a great dark red lipstick. The '90s are coming back... remember Chanel's "Vamp"?
ReplyDeleteI love the look, it's a gorgeous night time look.
ReplyDeleteAfter another post you did on red lipstick last fall I picked up the NARS matte pencil but in Cruella (Terre de Feu wasn't my color). I now feel naked without my red lipstick!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it completely depends on the person!! Your friend looks great with it and I'm so jealous she got to meet Jim Gaffigan!! =)
ReplyDeleteI personally think I look too gothic unless the red is more lightish! =)
Ergo - Blog
Wow. That colour looks great on her! I think this look is better on people with a substantial top lip (ie. not me). Haha
ReplyDeleteI think anyone with the right lips can carry off red lipstick. If you tend to have thin lips, red lipstick makes your mouth look like a thin red line...instead of a pouty one.
ReplyDeleteLately I've been all about dark red lipstick. I've gotten out of the habit of wearing eye makeup, so putting on a dash of red lipstick has been an easy and fun way to still feel a little bit glamorous.
ReplyDeletelove-i was trying on lipstick today-but couldn't quite find one to uit. love this
ReplyDeletein my blogger profile pic i'm wearing dark red! i love it (my mom says it makes me look "older" than i am.. i think she's nuts) i'm wearing revlon colorstay overtime in stay currant. it's the most fabulous stain i've ever used. does... not... come... off! have to use makeup remover to get the stuff off. and that's why it's so amazing...
ReplyDeleteI love the first pic with Jim Gaffigan! I saw him perform once, and I laughed so much that my face cheeks started hurting!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://stockholmstudyhall.tumblr.com
I love ALL shades of red on the lips! I really think it's hard NOT to look fabulous with a pop of red color on the lips. Here's my favorite lip lacquer that my friends and I have become obsessed with!

XO!

I think it will be like skinny jeans for me. When they first came back in style I thought - ew! 80's! no! But now I love mine and don't wear bootcut or straight very often anymore.
ReplyDeleteSo maybe I'll come to like it? I'm not sure. I saw the otherwise gorgeous Kaley Cuoco at the Golden Globes, and I'm not sure it was because she had on such a pale dress, or if it's because she did a dark eye too, but her dark lips really grossed me out! There's definitely a way to make it look good, like your friend, even if it's not for me!
When I saw this topic title, I thought of her immediately and was nervous the photos Joanna used would elicit the same response as Kaley Cuoco's look did -- scary! [Sorry to doubt you Jo!] I agree, I think because she did the dark eye and dark lip, plus her lip color had more black in it, did not like at all - unlike the photos above, especially Kate Bosworth ... love!
DeleteEven though it's sold out, would you mind sharing the name of Caroline's lip color? It's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanna, xx
I was just thinking about how dark lipstick is a 90s look. I'm not sure if I could rock it (I never wear lipstick) but I admire women that could.
ReplyDeleteThose reds are beautiful but so are those lips. I am afraid I would look insanely crazy if I wore red but my friend wears nothing but red all the time and she looks great in it. Makes me want to try again but I suppose I won't. : )
ReplyDeleteDo! I discovered lipstick a few years ago while playing at Sephora. Never considered myself a lipstick gal but now I love it. Personally, I'd wear the deep red in the fall and winter, but I do think it's beautiful. Looking forward to busting out my pinks and corals for spring/summer :)
ReplyDeletedefinitely a do! deep red is so lovely to wear right now!
ReplyDeleteis it okay to point out that your friend, Caroline is drop dead gorgeous and could probably pull off anything?! I got some great advice from a consultant when trying on lipsticks about picking the right tone of red based on your skin color, she said anyone can wear any shade of red as long as it matches your skin tone!
ReplyDeleteI like it a lot! I always feel like I look silly when I try to wear it, though. But I really like it when I see dark lipstick on others!
ReplyDeleteJenn

I love the "vamp" look I wish I could pull it off!!! x
ReplyDeletehttp://lippylucie.blogspot.co.uk
ABSOLUTELY a do. i'm a huge huge fan of lipstick and find myself wearing with every ensemble from leggings to skirts. my favorite dark red shade is NARS's matte lip color in Valparaiso. all of their shades are absolutely stunning!

www.leanerbythelake.com
i've also got the NARS Terre and it's incredible. works well with so many skin tones and hair colors.
DeleteDo! I absolutely love dark red lips.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes! So gorgeous. xo
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think it kind of makes women look older than their years. Also, my husband really doesn't like the look on others so I'm not too tempted to try it.
ReplyDeleteIt is a do! But I am sure it is another one of those trends that women love, men hate lol!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see this dark lipstick on a normal person :) I agree that Caroline is gorgeous and could pull anything off. I would without a doubt look goth with any dark lipstick. But, love this look on blonds/light brunettes.
ReplyDeleteI would totally wear it...if I planned to never show my teeth. I absolutely LOVE how it looks in every single one of these pictures...but none of them are smiling with their teeth showing. Every time I see the teeth of someone wearing dark lipstick they just look so dingy & dirty... :(. Even famous people..who have really really white fake looking teeth..idk, I just haven't seen it work out well for anyone yet.
ReplyDeletehttp://herestohappinesses.blogspot.com/
DO !! I believe one can pull anything off as long as one is comfortable with it: dark liptsick, blue lagoon mascara, or really blond hair dye, anything !
ReplyDeleteI actually wear a lot of NARS's Scarlett Empress, it's a dark fushia-ish lipstick, it makes you look like you bit grape, it's really pretty ! Every NARS lipsticks look good anyway :)
xx
What is Caroline's color that she is wearing?
ReplyDeleteI love wearing dark red lipstick I personally wear NARS Fire Down Below. It's perfect!
DON'T DON'T DON'T! So 90's, in a bad way! Sorry. It does not look good on your friend or anyone that I've ever seen, save someone with dark skin. And who wants to kiss someone wearing lipstick like that?
ReplyDeleteA more budget friendly option is Revlon's Blackberry! It is lovely and layerable.
ReplyDeleteSo funny, I used to wear Blackberry exclusively in college in the early 90's!
DeleteI've actually heard that from a few people! If it's good, I guess it sticks around!
DeleteA more budget friendly option is Revlon's Blackberry! It is lovely and layerable.
ReplyDeleteHer lipstick looks great, but you did not address the more important and obvious question of why Caroline is with Jim Gaffigan! Love that guy, so freaking funny!
ReplyDeleteI think dark red lipstick is a definite do!
ReplyDeleteI love red lipstick too!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.oneoblivion.com/
You have to be the right skin tone I'd say... But who am I? haha! I think you look beautifully stunning.
ReplyDeleteDO! I feel so fierce with dark red lips! It is worth a try for sure!
ReplyDeleteWhat's the sold out color Caroline is wearing anyway?
ReplyDeleteYes, please update w/ the sold out color....Would love to know!
DeleteI love it, but since I don't go out that much I never buy it thinking that I don't need it. Too strong for work, too strong for my everyday life!
ReplyDeletewww.theslowpace.wordpress.com
i am really a red red lipstick girl? but in dior perfecto, or black tie i have found the perfect shade and texture... would love to try tom ford black orchid or mac and nars. unfortunately i can't buy them here in my small french town of dijon... we have all kinds of mustards though .D
ReplyDeleteWho cares about the lipstick she met Jim Gaffigan!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Like Monica on Friends :) my husband doesn't like it though, so I'll probably just watch this trend from the sidelines!
ReplyDeleteRecently bought a dark lipstick actually - & it looks super chic on Caroline.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Kate Bosworth is actually wearing Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga in that picture. :)
I love it! Like Monica on Friends :) my husband doesn't like it though, so I'll probably just watch this trend from the sidelines!
ReplyDeleteI think its a total do! It looks so sultry and mysterious.
ReplyDeleteit's a do for me! love dark lips for winter! xx. gigi. food and beauty blogger @ www.gigikkitchen.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLove dark sultry lips! I found a GREAT color at the drugstore, actually: Maybelline's 14 hr Lipstick in "Wine & Forever." I'm obsessed!

Definitely going to try that! I noted in the comments that I have tried "megaccino" by Jane. It's dark and lovely as well!
DeleteOh, awesome Christie! I'll keep an eye out for it. Always looking for fabulous drugstore beauty suggestions—thanks for the hot tip!
Deletexo Erin
I'm a huge dark red lipstick fan!!!
ReplyDeleteYes. Dark lipstick all. day. long. A inexpensive drugstore option that I use is "megaccino" by Jane Cosmetics.
ReplyDeletea total DO. it looks fabulous.

I love dark lipstick. Red more than burgundy/wine.
ReplyDeletewow caroline looks so much like "lisa" from Mad About You!
ReplyDeleteDO DO DO DO!!!

I love the dark lipstick look. Unfortunately I am a blonde and I personally need to ease myself into such a contrast! I definitely think it's a do!

I wore Revlon's Black Cherry out to dinner one night while on my honeymoon; I loved it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE all red lipstick. The problem is that I feel like I need to have an occasion to wear it. I'm not quite brave enough to use it for every day wear, though I wish I was.

I feel self-conscious while wearing dark red lipstick, as it makes my teeth appear darker. Is this just me?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Afghan Red by NARS is my go-to lipstick of the season. It's a dark red with some nice berry hues.
ReplyDeleteI use to red Chanel red - a gorgeous true blue red!
ReplyDeleteEven though Caroline's color is sold out - what is the name of it? Thanks!
Please update w/ the sold out color. Thanks!
DeleteDefinitely definitely definitely do - if you've got the skin/face/general look for it.
ReplyDeleteI personally would be a little scared to do it, particularly in mascara and I think I'd look to evening-y, if you know what I mean. Perfect for a glamourous night out or formal event though, daytime, but that's mainly because I tend to wear eyeliner and and it looks so sophisticated!

*in the daytime because I tend to wear black mascara
Delete*too evening-y
Oh goodness, I didn't do well with typing!
I love it! The 90's are definitely coming back!
ReplyDeleteJim Gaffigan! So fun. I usually wear lip gloss and don't take the time to think about anything beyond that. but I like the dark red! Thanks for calling out a few good colors!
ReplyDeleteLOVE. I wear dark lipstick all the time! And people are always making comments along the lines of "I could never pull that off!" but I think you should just go for it. NARS Scarlet Empress, all the way.
ReplyDeleteDO! DO! DO! I love Mac's Rebel (a bit more fuschia) and Dark Side (super sultry).
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of it. I love how glamorous it looks without looking like you tried too hard. It's also unique and helps you stand out it the crowd.
ReplyDeletewww.simplydaring.blogspot.com
This trend is a big don't for me, and I'm all about the 90's revival! It's so harsh & even on gorgeous actresses it adds about 10 years.
ReplyDeleteI love dark lipstick, and I feel naked without mine. It's become something of a signature for me - I'll wear it day or night, summer or winter.
ReplyDeleteI love Revlon's Matte in Wine Not, and it's nice and cheap so I have three and make sure I have one in any handbag I take out.
whereverwefindourselves.com
Definitely a do... It just makes me feel properly dressed. It's like the icing on the cake, especially while wearing something simple like a Little black dress or jeans and a simple blouse.
ReplyDeleteumm i rock dark led lipstick at least once a week, and people always say they could never pull it off. i say, "go to MAC and have them pick out the color for you, and the liner, and show you how to use it." i believe we can all wear red lipstick. amen.
ReplyDeleteI love red lipstick in all shades. But since having my son, Jarvis, I have stopped wearing it. Found I constantly smeared it on him. Too much kisses and nibbling on my baby boy. So will have to just admire it on others.
ReplyDeletehttp://iliska-dreams.blogspot.com.au/
I love it. I just picke up ilia's femme fatale. Natural lipstick that looks amazing, very happy with it!
ReplyDeleteI think it's beautiful! I would love to try it.
ReplyDeletei'd love to rock any kind of lipstick but my partner HATES it when i do it :( actually he pretty much hates any kind of makeup!
ReplyDeleteI have to give a shout out to the cheapie Revlon Lip Butter in Red Velvet. It's the most wearable dark red I've found - I can even wear it to work.
ReplyDeletenoted this lipstick colour a few months ago! pure tend!
ReplyDeleteI love the look but I always feel self conscious because it inevitably ends up on everything except my lips.... my teeth, my scarf, the wine glass, the coffee cup, and damnit, my baby boy is just too dang kissable!! I've never found one that stays put and doesn't suck every drop of moisture from my lips... but I may just keep looking.
ReplyDeleteI think done right, it can look glamorous, but I would never be able to pull it off because my hair's strawberry blonde. Surprisingly, orange lipstick.. I can do!
ReplyDeleteWear it every day.
ReplyDeleteDior Addict Black Tie!
I love it, but I don't know if most guys do. Any guy I have ever talked to about makeup says that we girls wear waaaaaaay too much and that less is definitely more.
ReplyDeleteJoanna, any chance you know where Caroline got the green jacket in the first picture?
ReplyDeleteThanks very much.
I would totally wear dark red lipstick. I don't know if I could pull if off, but it doesn't hurt try.
ReplyDeleteOoo definitely a do, especially for night!
ReplyDeleteKristina

You have to have almost flawless skin to really pull this off I think. Or else it enhances every flaw. But it is beautiful!!
ReplyDelete-Lexy
Caroline is so gorgeous that she could wear ANY color. I am sure I would look like a chola.
ReplyDeleteGiven all the examples have light skin tones, I am little apprehensive to try it as I am definitely more of an olive. But hey, you have to try everything once! Love love Caroline's look!
ReplyDeleteAndrea
Burt's Bee (strangely enough) sells a FANTASTIC dark red lippy. And it's all natural!
ReplyDeletei don't hate it, but i see it done badly so often, i avoid it.
ReplyDeleteyou've got to have flawless skin to go with it. caroline could wear anything, and it would be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI won´t
ReplyDeleteI like them but i don´t see my self ok...
So i prefer to make up my eyes, love smokey eyes
Love it but I don't think I could work it myself... :(
ReplyDeleteI love that lipstick color. You are right - having enough red is the key to not having "vampire" lips :)
ReplyDeletewww.livingnotesfromnyc.com
I do like dark lipstick for evenings.
ReplyDeleteI have NARS Terre de Feu, and, while it is a beautiful colour, I have found that it doesn't stay on my lips for very long at all, even with multiple layers and a brush application.
Another dark shade I have and like is Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture from their special matt range.
But Ruby Woo by MAC is my safest, sunnier bet!
Amelia
This seems to divide along gender lines for me: whenever I wear it my female friends love it and my male friends are all "whoa, goth?!"
ReplyDeletekassia x
I actually like dark red a little more than bright red. But I really think it depends on the person's personality.
ReplyDeleteDef Do! I started wearing dark red when you blogged about it a few months ago!
ReplyDeleteDark red lipstick is a definite YES!
ReplyDeleteThere's something so glamorous and fabulous about it. Unlike the bright, bold classic red, dark red is more seductive and a teensy bit more on the dark side. To me, dark red is an amazing color for the colder months as well as for more fancy occasions.
I personally have yet to truly experiment with dark red lipstick but until I do, I'll have to be content seeing all the pictures of gorgeous girls wearing it!
Caroline definitely is too stunning and could probably pull off anything she tried!

I'm obsessed with my new Alima natural/organic tinted lip balm in cranberry - I get that rich dark look with the comfort of a balm! I've also had great luck w/ stains. I think investing a good lipliner is key (or to even fill in your lips entirely with the liner).

ReplyDeletei love this colour and i wear a similar shade from Avon!
ReplyDeleteI want to try this, I do, but sometimes it looks to Vampire-y. I don't like the blood stained lips, but I do enjoy the sultriness of how it looks on most women.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, maybe one day I'll gain the courage needed to be adventurous and this on trend? I do still love bright pinks, and reds though!!
