The other day, I was browsing around the home shop John Derian, when I spotted this embroidered duck onesie. It was so intricate and beautiful in person, and I learned that it was hand-drawn and designed by Brooklyn designer Stephanie Housley of Coral & Tusk. She also makes embroidered pillows, aprons, tea towels and artwork. How gorgeous are they all?!The video below gives a peek behind-the-scenes. "I identify with the fox a lot," says Stephanie. ReplyDeleteStephanie's designed products are so lovely and whimsical. I first encountered them in the gift shop at the RISD Museum (she's an alum of RISD). There is something so wonderfully old-fashioned about the products for kids and babies especially!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I love simplicity and sophistication in design for children. I'm not sure who came along and decided that every toy needed to be made out of plastic in a garish (or pastel) color with a television character all over it. Also, the plush guys in a row on the shelf in the second picture made me think of Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox :)

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else take offense to all the Native American imagery? I don't understand how designers can somehow make a cute, trendy theme out of a culture that our ancestors obliterated. Joanna, can you please think twice about showcasing a shop that rips off native culture and calls it hip?

DeleteThank you for bringing this up. Cultural appropriation is messed up and I wish more people were cognizant of it. I think it's the responsibility of all people not to do or say harmful things and this, while seemingly innocent and harmless, is damaging to Native peoples.

DeleteYES! Thank you! Her craftsmanship and other designs are lovely, without having to rip off indigenous culture. Support an indigenous artist if you dig this look. Also consider what you are teaching your child when you decorate their room with animals playing dress-up with sacred items of other culture. Too bad, I'd otherwise be a customer.

DeleteI agree 100%, hasn't there been enough attention drawn to this issue online that it's pretty well known that native symbol appropriation is Not Cool? I'm surprised to see this endorsement here, and I kept waiting to hear where the artist's native heritage tied in. Sadly, it seems that's not the case. Also, does anyone find it ironic that she is using workshops in India to rip off Native American "Indian" symbols? For shame!
DeleteI am normally a fan of this blog, but I would never buy anything from Coral and Tusk, and I think that choosing to promote this shop is really ignorant and insensitive.

Girl and Graaf sells a few select items and one of them are Coral & Tusk's pillows. Gorgeous shop!
