The other day, I was browsing around the home shop John Derian, when I spotted this embroidered duck onesie. It was so intricate and beautiful in person, and I learned that it was hand-drawn and designed by Brooklyn designer Stephanie Housley of Coral & Tusk. She also makes embroidered pillows, aprons, tea towels and artwork. How gorgeous are they all?!The video below gives a peek behind-the-scenes. "I identify with the fox a lot," says Stephanie. "He looks so cute and so funny...but he's also really sneaky." Find her online shop here, and watch a behind-the-scenes video here.

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! that's possibly the most divine shop I've ever witnessed! Thank you so much for sharing = me browsing all day long now! :D
ReplyDeleteAlso, my name is Jo too! And you're blog made me realise that being called Joanna/Jo is super cool! X
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous stuff! I am dying over that fox pillow. Thanks (yet again) for introducing us to a great brand!

I have seen her stuff before! I think Anthropologie was selling some of her stuffed toys around the holidays. They look amazing! Thanks for sharing the link! :) You always find the best stuff.

Ooo, I love those pillows!
ReplyDeleteWhat a find! Just gorgeous
ReplyDeleteThat video was amazing. Her stuff is so beautiful. I loved the bear and the fox in their headdresses.
ReplyDeleteI love her style. I'm also an embroidery artist, but I do everything by hand, which makes it impossible to make any kind of large quantity of items. I mostly do illustrations for magazines. You can check out my work on my agent's site:

So lovely! I am loving foxes lately. I just bought a little white ceramic fox - the lady in the check-out line called it a 'cat statue' which totally cracked me up!
ReplyDeleteCoral & Tusk was just featured in Martha Stewart Living's February Issue!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy needlepoint is making a comeback! It's so darling.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love this! I love the little fox slippers, feathers, and little medals! How sweet and talented she is.

too funny! i posted about coral & tusk today too! i saw them in the february issue of martha stewart living. i LOVE their product.
ReplyDeleteBlown away! These are just amazing! I have a "woodland creature" bedroom theme and now I am just drooling over that fox pillow...
ReplyDeleteStephanie's designed products are so lovely and whimsical. I first encountered them in the gift shop at the RISD Museum (she's an alum of RISD). There is something so wonderfully old-fashioned about the products for kids and babies especially!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I love simplicity and sophistication in design for children. I'm not sure who came along and decided that every toy needed to be made out of plastic in a garish (or pastel) color with a television character all over it. Also, the plush guys in a row on the shelf in the second picture made me think of Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox :)
ReplyDeleteI love her home goods too. And she has a beautiful work space.
interesting video. very cool that she loved animals from when she was a child, and now makes animal crafts.

Really, really beautiful... especially the tea towels and baby items. Now if only either of those could be kept clean!
ReplyDeleteThose pillows are SO beautiful! Just stunning.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this stuff. All the animals are so adorable.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else take offense to all the Native American imagery? I don't understand how designers can somehow make a cute, trendy theme out of a culture that our ancestors obliterated. Joanna, can you please think twice about showcasing a shop that rips off native culture and calls it hip?
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I thought as well...
DeleteThank you for bringing this up. Cultural appropriation is messed up and I wish more people were cognizant of it. I think it's the responsibility of all people not to do or say harmful things and this, while seemingly innocent and harmless, is damaging to Native peoples.
DeleteHere's a link with more information on appropriating from Native cultures, for those interested: http://nativeappropriations.com/2010/04/but-why-cant-i-wear-a-hipster-headdress.html
Native appropriations is such an articulate website that addresses this issue. I'm so glad you brought this up.
DeleteAmen. Thanks for the link.
DeleteYES! Thank you! Her craftsmanship and other designs are lovely, without having to rip off indigenous culture. Support an indigenous artist if you dig this look. Also consider what you are teaching your child when you decorate their room with animals playing dress-up with sacred items of other culture. Too bad, I'd otherwise be a customer.
DeleteThanks for the link, Feme Sole!
DeleteThank you for bringing this up! This is so important to share.
DeleteYes, absolutely! From a Native standpoint, this issue is so incredibly frustrating to me.
DeleteI agree 100%, hasn't there been enough attention drawn to this issue online that it's pretty well known that native symbol appropriation is Not Cool? I'm surprised to see this endorsement here, and I kept waiting to hear where the artist's native heritage tied in. Sadly, it seems that's not the case. Also, does anyone find it ironic that she is using workshops in India to rip off Native American "Indian" symbols? For shame!
DeleteI am normally a fan of this blog, but I would never buy anything from Coral and Tusk, and I think that choosing to promote this shop is really ignorant and insensitive.
Love these! I'm going to have to check out their etsy shop since I'm doing our first baby's nursery in foresty animals. :)

These all look like they could have been plucked right out of a Wes Anderson movie...adorable and quirky in the best way! ~Heather P.
ReplyDeletewhat a precious shop. i am really digging the arrows pillow and the animal artwork.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing.

Loved the video and that cute, sneaky fox.
ReplyDeleteSo funny after your post on Coral & Tusk yesterday, I stumbled upon this new company, Girl and Graaf http://girlandgraaf.com.au/, featured on the Miss Moss blog (http://www.missmoss.co.za/). Girl and Graaf sells a few select items and one of them are Coral & Tusk's pillows. Gorgeous shop!
