NYC Date Idea: Magic show

So. Alex and I are usually pretty skeptical, but last weekend our minds were blown...

Along with two friends, we went to see Steve Cohen, a magician who performs five times a week in a private suite at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. The dress code is cocktail attire, so Alex wore a suit, and I wore my striped dress. You take the elevator thirty-something floors and enter a luxurious hotel room with just a few rows of chairs. Suddenly, Mr. Cohen enters with a cheeky smile, and the show begins...

His incredible performance comprises mind-reading and sleight-of-hand card tricks, and his charming antics and quick wit makes him seem like a Yonkers-born Willy Wonka. (At one point, he even began giggling and jumping in the air.) Mr. Cohen prefers subtle mind tricks over pulling rabbits out of hats. "I don't do big, flashy magic,” he told The New York Times. "My magic is more of a thinking man’s magic."

We were totally enthralled. People were gasping after each trick. Normally, I can figure out most magic tricks, but these were watertight...or maybe just actual magic?

Perhaps the biggest jawdropper was "Think-a-Drink." Mr. Cohen asked everyone in the audience to write down their favorite drink on a piece of paper. "Be specific!" he encouraged. "Don't just write, 'beer,' write exactly what kind of beer."

Alex wrote "Dry Tanqueray martini up with olives," and I nerded out with a Shirley Temple. Then we all passed in our papers, one audience member shuffled them up, and another audience member randomly chose five.

Then Mr. Cohen stood in front of the room with a teapot. Slowly, the audience member named the five chosen drinks—grapefruit juice, iced coffee, a 2002 Syrah red wine, a margarita and a vodka martini. And, right in front of us, Mr. Cohen poured each drink, one by one, out of the teapot.

HE IMMEDIATELY POURED FIVE RANDOMLY REQUESTED DRINKS OUT OF A SINGLE TEAPOT. Just like that.

"To shouts of 'Oh, my God,' Mr. Cohen slyly answers, 'Just call me Steve.'"

What a fun and wild night. I'd highly recommend it. You can find tickets here and read more here, if you'd like.

P.S. More NYC date ideas, including a terrifying trapeze class and fire-escape drinks...

  5. Holy god, that's crazy awesome. How fun! (p.s. My go-to bar drink is, nine times out of ten, a Shirley Temple. My friends mock me every time- and I'm okay with that. The other one time out ten? A black russian!) Did the audience members whose drinks were selected get to down theirs? That would be a bonus!

    1. @katilda....it has been done! My wife and I went to see Steve a few years ago after seeing him on CBS Sunday Morning. After watching him on TV my wife said "If I ever go to see him I will ask for a thick chocolate milk shake". I took my wife to New York for her birthday and surprised her with front row seats to the show. Once he pulled out the magic tea pot I knew exactly what my wife's drink of choice would be. After choosing fresh squeezed orange juice, a margarita and a couple other drinks my wife's thick chocolate milk shake was chosen. She almost burst into tears (of joy of course). After pouring the "other" drinks and allowing an audience member to taste them, a look of angst washed over his face. "Thick chocolate milk shake? This is gonna be tough", he said. As he tipped the pot to pour the drink a small brown drop dripped into the glass and then nothing. At that point he exclaimed "I guess it's too thick. I think it's going to need some coaxing." He then shook the pot a few times and poured again. Out came one of the thickest milk shakes I have ever seen. Simply amazing!! Steve Cohen is one of the greatest showman of our time, he is very gracious and knows how to control his audience. I suggest everybody read his book "Win the Crowd", it is very well written and has helped my wife and I in our personal and professional lives.

  20. Sounds awesome! I am also skeptical of these types of things, but my new husband and I went to one in Maui after a recommendation on our honeymoon. If you are ever in Maui you MUST go to Warren and Annabelle's.

  21. That sounds so fun! I just saw a film at the DOC NYC last weekend called Magic Camp, about this camp where famous magicians David Blaine and David Copperfield went to as kids, and the week-long magic competition the campers take part in. It was amazing, and not just because my friend was the editor! It was really sweet to see how so many kids who didn't seem to fit in anywhere else could be themselves at the camp. And the magic was so good, especially for young kids. Hopefully it will be on DVD or Netflix soon, you should keep an eye out for it!

  25. My favourite part is that it is cocktail attire, what a fun night out! Love excuses to get all dolled up plus it's like a step back in time with the venue and the whole entertainment aspect... no big screen needed! This is definitely something I want to try when I visit NYC again.

  33. We had a similar experience when we were visiting Maui. We were so skeptical of magic shows, but we had heard that the Warren and Annabelle's show in Lahaina was amazing, and it did not disappoint! First off, Warren was HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard that I was crying through the entire show. And his magic was mind-blowing. I had the same though as you – that his tricks COULD be actual magic (and this is coming from a major skeptic over here!). Thanks for sharing your experience, and I hope to see Mr. Cohen's show if we're ever in NYC!

  35. We went to this too a few months back and we left so frustrated yet excited! It was a really spectacular night out for us New Yorkers who feel like we've done it all. Your comparison to Willy Wonka is right on. He was almost a caricature of himself with the facial expressions and passion for 'the magic'. Oh and don't even get me started on Think A Drink...

  36. We watched the same show in 2010. Steve was charming and captivating and left everyone astounded. As two Aussies on holiday, it added an extra special, extra zing of magic to NYC.

  41. I feel as if my sole purpose here on Earth is to find true love. What is true love exactly? I feel like true love is when you can accept some one for who they are 100%, and have no remorse towards them. No matter what the other person’s faults are, you should be able to look past them all. Another big role in true love is trust. You cannot love someone if you don’t trust them 100%. Without a trustworthy bond a relationship can only get so far. Eventually an untrustworthy relationship will come crumbling down to the ground before your eyes.
I was seeking this beautiful feeling of love all my life until I found Hooxx.com! Hooxx.com allowed me to search for love without having the stresses of society being put on my back. I felt as if I was free and could be myself 100%. There are so many different types of people anyone can look for. My old taste in men was dumped down the drain because there are so many different types of men I could search for. For once in my life I didn’t feel like I had to pretend to be someone else.
