How are you all doing? Is everyone OK after the hurricane? The photos of the aftermath have been shocking, and we've been thinking so much about everyone who was affected. How devastating for those who lost their homes, and
this story was utterly heartbreaking. We feel so, so lucky to have gotten through the hurricane unscathed. Lower Manhattan still doesn't have power, so our apartment is pitch black, but we're safe and fine. Here are a few of our photos from this crazy week, if you'd like to see...

On Monday, the day the hurricane was heading our way, Toby and I went for a little morning walk around our neighborhood, along with his Thomas-the-Tank-Engine umbrella and a peanut butter sandwich. I wanted to give him a run-around before we got stuck inside for a couple days. His enthusiasm was contagious. Little kids can be so blissfully (and beautifully) unaware.

During our walk, most businesses were closed, except for the
pizza place (hurray! of course we ordered a large) and the children's pharmacy, which has a train table. Party at 10am! As a special treat, Toby was allowed to have a purple lollipop, which basically made his whole life.

That afternoon, the rain started, and trees bent over almost halfway in the wind. We ran over to our neighbors' house, where they built a fire and made Negronis and pasta. Toby and their one-year-old daughter spent the afternoon running up and down their hallway and...that's pretty much it. They loved that hallway.

That night, we ran back across the rainy street to our house, and the power went out shortly afterward. We lit candles (including
this pumpkin one, which is officially The Coziest Candle in Candle History) and Toby fell fast asleep with his adorable little tractor PJs sticking right up in the air.
The only real bummer was having to throw out everything in our fridge, as Toby was dismayed not to have his morning and bedtime milk. The next morning, I gave him a sippy cup filled with orange juice instead, and tried to make it sound exciting: "Toby! I have a special treat for you! Juice for breakfast! Just like at Meriwether's house!" But after smiling indulgently, he said, matter of factly, "Mat." (=Milk). I was like, "Well, we actually get to drink juice today!" His reply: "Mat." He would not be fooled.

Yesterday, Alex and I walked up to his office in midtown, which had power, so we could check emails, work and recharge our electronics. A whole conference room ended up being dedicated to displaced spouses.

We grabbed Chinese food after work, and everything felt almost normal. But the cab ride home was SPOOKY. As we drove below 31st Street, the city plunged into complete darkness (you can see the view from the taxi window, above). The buildings were towering gray shapes against the moonlight. Suddenly nervous, I asked Alex if we were crazy to go back home, but there were lots of people walking around with flashlights, and a general feel of camaraderie, so we forged ahead.
The French restaurant down our street was actually open! Glowing with flickering candles, the room looked really romantic, and couples were enjoying wine and sandwiches.

Meanwhile, we all agreed that the best decision was for Toby and his beloved
babysitter Naudia to take a cab to her apartment in Brooklyn, which had power, so they could have a sleepover! He was so excited.

Naudia was SO sweet and bought a clown costume from a drugstore so they could go trick-or-treating. Toby was Mr. Clown, and she was Mrs. Clown. His friend was a dinosaur. I almost keeled over from the cuteness of her photos, and then almost burst into tears because I wanted to beam myself there so much. How delicious does he look? I can't wait to hear Toby's full recap of the night. We chatted quickly on the phone this morning, after he woke up, and he kept saying, "Silly! Fun!"
Really hope you are all doing OK and hanging in there! Here are a few more photos from the news...

And did you see
this rainbow arched over the city after the hurricane? Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the storm. Here's a great
list of ways to help. All our best wishes to you and your loved ones. xoxo
P.S. I'm bumping the
challenge series to next week, thank you! xoxo

ReplyDeleteSending warm, dry, positive thoughts and love from Ireland xxx
ReplyDeleteGlad your family is okay! How wonderful is your sitter, and your good attitude is contagious. Hope all is restored soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everyones okay!
ReplyDeletegiveaway ends tomorrow! check it out!

So scary! Glad to hear you guys are safe and those clown costumes are adorable : ). Xx
ReplyDeleteSo sweet of your babysitter - as a past babysitter myself, I know how much love we can have for the children we care for! He looks so cute! Also, yes my heart is BREAKING for those affected. Thanks for telling your story. XO Jenna
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who lives in Jersey and is seven months pregnant—with no power, no heat, no running water, and no gas! She said they waved the white flag and headed for Grandma's house, which had all of the above plus Wi-Fi. Oof! Glad to hear you guys weathered the storm all right. Those pics of pitch-black Lower Manhattan are creepy, though.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you and your family are safe. My thoughts have been with everyone in NYC affected by this tragic storm. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteSal x
Oh my. Everyones Sandy story is different. I am glad yours is full of goos memories... PS That candle lit french restaurant looks so cozy! ANd what a great baby sitter!
ReplyDeleteI love this post. Such an amazing contrast between sweet little Toby's clown face and the devastation of Sandy. Beautiful job capturing the reality of the moment!
ReplyDeleteGreat recap of an insane week. Toby is leaving his 'baby' look behind and is a real little man.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. What jumped out at me, was that you had Toby sleep over at your sitters place. Was that a hard decision to reach? Or have you done it before? I read that you feel like your sitter is like family, but is it still a employer/employee relationship for the sleepover? Just curious, as I'm sure other readers are too.
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys weathered the storm ok.
those top pictures don't even look like Toby! Since when did he turn 15 yrs old? ...
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys are okay! Love your blog!! Where did you get that awesome rain jacket for Toby?
ReplyDeleteLove the Rainbow Photo!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your story. New Yorkers are so resilient and I am so proud to be a native. I love Toby's halloween costume, I actually teared up reading this, because the stories are so devastating coming out, but the rainbow (which I also posted on my blog) sort of made my day. Hang in there~xo
ReplyDeleteAnd Toby too of course!
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys are okay. I live on the coast in CT and all four of our coastal counties have been declared federal disaster areas. We're lucky and only had a little flooding in the house and still have power. There were so many who aren't as lucky as we are.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are unbelievable! Thinking of you and everyone on the east coast. I'm glad you're doing well and I hope you get your power back soon. Lots of hugs!!
ReplyDeletep.s. Toby is devastatingly adorable in these photos!
I about keeled over seeing how tall Toby is! Those photos of the Hurricane Sandy damage are so sad. My aunt lives in NYC and is fine, but feeling like a nomad since she lives in the Lower East Side. Hopefully things will go back to normal soon!
ReplyDeleteI adore the picture of Toby and his sandwich! I'm glad you guys are safe.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you all came through the storm unscathed. Best wishes from Minnesota!
ReplyDeleteThanks for telling your story, as a New Yorker it feels difficult to even think about talking about anything else. Like it's not okay or something! I know that's silly, just feeling so sad for all the loss out there. We're doing fine in BK and happy to hear you and your family are as well! Toby's sleeping pic is adorbs.
ReplyDeleteJoanna this was a splendid post! I really like getting the narrative from someone who's actually there, weathering the storm. That's so cool that the french restaurant is open and Toby looks SO cute!
ReplyDeleteAlso that carousal picture is erie.
ANd the rainbow one is glorious ;D
Glad you're okay
These pictures are shocking and the destruction seems devastating. However, we live in a country with vast amounts of resilient and resources citizens. New York will be back to the bustling metropolis that it once was. Good luck to you and your little family.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are all well - so many good stories in with the bad, like that poor mother who lost hold of her boys. Oy!
ReplyDeleteAs many devastating stories there are coming out of this tragedy, it is heart-warming to see some of the positive stories and camaraderie that have occurred as well. Thank you for sharing your sweet pictures of Toby and New York as it emerges from Sandy.
ReplyDeleteThis is a brilliant post, I'm so happy you're all OK, I'll admit I thought of you guys when I heard the hurricane would be hitting NYC.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, how big is Toby getting! he's gorgeous xx
Thanks for sharing. It's devastating seeing the pictures coming from the East Coast but looks like much brighter days are ahead (that rainbow was unbelievable!).
ReplyDeletep.s. On the news they are warning people not to use candles because there are gas leaks, so they can cause an explosion (scary!). They say to use flashlights instead. Just a heads up!
Stay safe!
amazing pictures. thank u 4 sharing. we are so far away, but we think about ny and Sandy. Toby is so cute!
ReplyDeletegood luck (sorry 4 my bad english!)
maggie
Thanks so much for letting us know how y'all are doing. Seems like all we've seen for days is the devastation - it's a joy and relief to see New York's resilience in action. And Toby is insanely precious as always. I can't wait til my Ivan is big enough to get excited about Halloween - maybe next year!
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures! It's just so nice to see a real New Yorker's account. The whole experience must have been really scary, glad you and your family are OK! x
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you are all safe Joanna - I was thinking of you and Sharon's family too - feel useless down here - but was sending safe thoughts your way!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you are safe!
ReplyDeleteI love that image of the french restaurant with candlelight. So romantic.
Isn’t That Charming.
Great pictures!! I love the restaurant photo! I'm glad you're all safe! Hang in there!

Thank you for sharing..
ReplyDeleteThe devastation is horrible, and I am floored at how lucky the Husb and I were to not even loss power! Looks like you guys made the best of a crappy situation. Glad to hear all is well, and that Toby still had his Halloween. What a great relationship you have with his babysitter.
ReplyDeleteJoanna, you did a great job on this post and are a testament to creatively staying positive. I live in CT, and went in to work for first time today. It's all overwhelming, but if your house wasn't swept away, we have every reason to be thankful. You are an inspiration. Thanks
ReplyDeletePrecious! I love how you're doing your best to keep going on with normal life. Toby seems to be taking it all in stride! If only the rest of us could live with that kind of innocence and joy every single day :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you are all safe. What a bummer to still not have power, but it was so good to read your post and see that you're all doing ok. Hopefully it will come back on soon. Being without power is SO hard (especially when that means no water). Good thing you live in the city with access to take out and super romantic French restaurants serving wine.
ReplyDeleteThe first few photos are so precious "have sandwich, will travel"!
ReplyDeleteI'm so thankful you guys are okay! The devastation has been hard to fathom here in the west, but our hearts go east to all those still suffering.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful blessing Naudia is to your family! Those photos are so sweet. Allowing the little ones to be blissfully unaware for this time in their young lives is such a gift - keep those sweet little faces smiling!
So glad you guys are ok!! Hope your power comes on soon. We lucked out and didn't lose power in our neighborhood, but power was out through a huge chunk of the Lehigh Valley for days... things are just now starting to get back to normal, with the exception of the insanely long gas lines...
ReplyDeleteI love this city ( we live way uptown, so we haven't suffered anything except blisters), I love Mr. Clown and sweet (gorgeous!!) Naudia. I love the way you're raising Toby. And that rainbow is just, so ... it fills my heard to overflowing
ReplyDeleteim so glad everyone is alright. I know it was hard i usually go home around this time (in the bronx) and i didnt i would of been trapped for a few days. we got it alittle bit of something here in dc like no power but not as it was expected. im glad toby had fun with naudia very cute indeed. the rainbow is so wonderful. makes you love nyc more very powerful people us new yorkers are. this didnt slow us down at all
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your story. Have been obsessively following it from Ohio (grew up in Jerz, prom night at Seaside :), lived in Bklyn). Was talking to someone about it and she commented "Manhattan would be the worst place to be without power" and I disagree. You are sharing the hard times with millions of others. No one bans together during and after a crisis quite like New Yorkers. I hope you find peace in the darkness, simplicity as you remember those who lost much more and then when it ends you'll be so appreciative of light. (I lost power for about 9 days this summer after a storm-it's easier to be reflective and calm when you're not going through it! Hope it's restored quickly!)
ReplyDeleteOh hey! I'm a longtime reader and was totally tickled to see myself in your photo of AOC from last night.
ReplyDeletefantastic post, i really enjoyed reading it, so glad to hear your sweet family is safe. so many amazing stories are coming out, such devastating effect on your city.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago we had an ice storm so bad our whole town was out of power for over a week! No lights or heat in January! But like NY and NJ, everyone did what they could for each other, and we not only made it, it became normal! Thanks for sharing. We really want to know how it's going for you, and those around you! Toby is so darling, and I'm glad he has such a kind and caring caregiver! He could have his milk!
ReplyDeletetoby is such a big boy now. i'm glad you guys are all safe and well.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you are okay. We were spared from the storm with just one down tree... a relief, considering we were hit pretty hard with bad wind damage and flooding in Hurricanes Irene and Lee. Hang in there - as bad as things seem, people are resilient, and where there is a will to rebuild, there is always a way!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you and your family are safe. I can not imagine what the last few days were like. Prayers and hugs to everyone affected!
ReplyDeleteSamaritan's Purse is also leading storm relief projects in New Jersey, if any of your readers are interested (they're a Christian relief organization.) http://spvolunteernetwork.org/projects/hurricane-sandy-response.aspx
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! I told my mums the other day, how interesting it is that technology makes tragedies seem personal...following your blog and seeing your updates on what is going on, makes Sandy feel real to me, in Cali, on a whole different level than the news does. Prayers for you and your family and the whole area!

Joanna... a lovely, thoughtful post. Such a heartbreaking time for so many - but you bring a much-needed element of warmth, as you always do.
ReplyDeleteJust a wee comment... your Toby is really starting to grow up! I almost didn't recognize him in the first photo. :) Killer tractor PJ's, though.
What a sweet post .. My son lives in Queens, he walked to work yesterday ( 5th Ave/Manhattan) and today he said he was able to use the subway and it was "wonderful". LOL. only after taking a 90 minute walk each way to work does a person say taking a rush hour subway is "wonderful".
ReplyDeleteOur family is in Westchester , without power. And here we sit in Argentina and feel helpless.
Stay safe .. besos,
Thank you for sharing, Joanna. This is such an uplifting post, while paying tribute to the devastation of the hurricane. Toby is utterly adorable as well, what a munchkin.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie Toby is! and good on the president for being with the public during this time, amazing photo of the rainbow over the city!

That picture of Toby standing on the sidewalk getting ready for his sleepover brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for documenting it all for us, glad you're all okay. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh my...glad your family is okay. My sister is also in Lower Manhattan and still w/o power and water. She said it's getting a bit dangerous down there, so I'm thankful that they found a hotel for tonight that will also take their dog.
ReplyDeletePraying for all those affected! And what sweet photos.

Glad youre all ok. Ive always thought Toby looks just like you but in the top photo, he sure resembles your husband, dont you think? What a wonderful sitter you have. Glad she and her family are ok too.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you made it through the storm. My thoughts go out to all those who were affected by Sandy, both in the US and the Caribbean.
ReplyDeleteI find your amazing blog today...I put it with my favourites...when I was reading your last post, tears pop up in my eyes...I love NY , was there in 2004 and really want to go back.
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking time for lots of people...and I never take my home and house for granted anymore...
Big hugs from across the ocean.

Thanks to share this information and hope all will be okay very soon.

Wish I could deliver a casserole or something! Thinking of all those who were affected by the storm.
ReplyDeleteI´m glad that you and your family are ok...Here in Europe people were following Sandy evolution very wooried; it´s been incredible...A city like NY in that conditions... BRRRR!!! I wish everything will become allright soon... :D
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you guys are safe and sound! I kept frantically checking Facebook for updates from my friends, and thankfully everyone seems to be fine. My heart goes out to those who lose loved ones or are now homeless because of the hurricane, there are so many sad stories :-(
ReplyDeleteglad to see that you guys are doing fine! we actually ot our power restored late tuesday in the middle of the night, so we got lucky! we live very close to one of the PATH stations in jersey city, so i think they are trying to restore power near the train stations first so they can get them back up and running... PATH trains have a grim outlook unfortunately, and my boyfriend takes it to work :/
ReplyDeleteI've been following the stories about Hurricane Sandy with horror. It's good to hear that you & your family are safe. x
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of pics!! Been thinking of you...Glad to hear your family was unscathed. Nice to see the human spirit (restaurant pic) still going strong!!
ReplyDeleteBe well.
I am so glad you managed to get through unscathed. My heart goes out to everyone affected- the pictures of the damage are just staggering.
ReplyDeleteSorry you are still without power, but looks like you all made the most of the situation.
ReplyDeleteWe are in New Jersey and are one of the lucky ones with power. My parents live on Long Beach Island so have no idea if they still have a home to go home to (when they let them back on the island in a week!) We are all just trying to be positive and it's been amazing how people & businesses have all banded together during Sandy and I have a little more faith in the human race :) Hope you get your power back soon!
so glad that you are alright. there are so many heartbreaking stories surfacing now. it is quite sad. i hope you get your power back on soon.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been a tough week for you. I'm happy to hear your family is safe :)
ReplyDeleteToby looks so cute is his costume. I'm glad he enjoys his trick-or-treating!
Love and hugs from Japan.
Glad you guys are safe. That trick or treat photo of Toby is so cute! xx
ReplyDeleteHow very sweet of his babysitter to take Toby home with her!
ReplyDeleteI'm a full time nanny; I know how incredibly exciting and special that must have been for him.
Prayers for a quick recovery, East Coast!
Wow, I was excited when I found your site, but these pictures are on a whole other level. Just Beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. Thank you for sharing from your perspective.

Thank you for sharing, the picture made me tear up. I am down in New Orleans so I can appreciate the waiting and wondering and underlying anxiety people were and still are feeling. Those pictures of Toby trick-or-treating were so sweet.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you guys made it through okay. :) I know what you mean about the black and quiet being so creepy - we had that after hurricane Ike. you don't realize how much background noise there is at night or how much you depend on streetlights until the power goes out everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you guys are okay. Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective with us. On watching the coverage on CNN , my 3.5 year old son went into our prayer room and prayed "Kyabsoche (God), please let people's homes be not so wet anymore". Our hearts are with you. Your friends in Toronto, Canada.
ReplyDeleteJo, how did you find Naudia? I'm just starting the process of trying to find a nanny, and it seems like you lucked out big time! Was it word of mouth, a referral service, a website? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update how ya'all are doing, and the photos
ReplyDeletePrayers to everyone
Good to know you are ok. That photo of water pouring into the construction site and water over the slide - wow. NYC is such a resilient city, I am sure they will be back in no time. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteso happy y'all are safe and doing well. our prayers go out to everyone affected by the storm. especially those who have lost loved ones.

Stacy, what a small world!! How funny!!
ReplyDeleteleslie, thanks for your question! yes, we absolutely ADORE our babysitter. she's been with us for 2.5 years and feels like family. toby has spent the night at her house once before, when we were having a holiday party at our apartment and didn't want to wake him up (since our apartment is so tiny; his nursery is right next to the living room).
ReplyDeletewe're very comfortable having him stay at her apartment, and he LOVES it. it's a total adventure for him, and she has a cat and gives him yummy treats from the farmer's market:) she is so, so sweet with him.
we still pay her for the sleepover, of course, since although she feels like family to us, she's still working hard to take good care of a noisy toddler! :) we pay her for all the hours that he's awake plus a small additional overnight fee (since of course she has to stay home once he's asleep, etc.) and we also pay for all expenses (the cab ride out there, a half gallon of milk, etc.)
it also helps that toby sleeps well; once he falls asleep, he's out for the count until the next morning; and also he's used to sleeping in his travel crib since we travel pretty regularly. so all those things make it much easier, too, that it might be if he had a harder time sleeping away from us.
anyway, hope that helps answer your questions!! love, joannaxoxo
So happy to read that you, your family and apartment escaped the storm unscathed! And it was very heart warming to see how you and your husband made sure your little one still had fun kid moments despite it all!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Kristina
I am sorry to hear about the hurricane, hope everything will be better and everyone stay safe.
ReplyDeleteToby is toooo cute, like the photos of him wearing clown costume
Glad everyone is safe.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're safe. That photo of the rainbow is amazing. Is that real? My heart goes out to everyone affected by the hurricane. xoxo

ReplyDeleteJoanna, great hurricane story! Despite the devastation and hardships that came with Sandy, it's nice to hear the positive side of being forced into a uncomfortable situation and environment. Y'all did a great job at staying creative. And Toby is adorable!
