Love the rosy cheeks and pink nose from the brisk cooler weather weddings. I think this would be a perfect reason to splurge on some cashmere, I say it's a do.

we had an early spring wedding (March 28) and i wore a cardigan over my dress from the second the ceremony was done until i snugged into bed at the end of the night. it was white like my dress, and i was so glad i decided to ... i took it off once for a photo and started to shiver immediately!

And I was a summer bride on a hot august day in So Cal, but I would have LOVED to have been a fall bride with a cardigan. I just love the look.
those brides are ADORABLE... i think for a wedding that's more casual or rustic, it's totally appropriate. but for a fancier wedding, a fur shawl, a white scarf, or something similar would be more appropriate....

I love the first photo and that cardigan is beautiful! I would like a fall wedding. Winter would be a bit too cold especially for taking photos and doing activities outside, which I would definitely want!
ReplyDeleteWe were married on January 2, 2010, and it was about 2 degrees that day with no snow. Beautiful in a 100 year old mansion, but quite cold. Toasty inside, so no cardigan, but I wore my red wool little red riding hood coat into the house!

I had the hardest time finding something affordable, however. I ended up grabbing a cardigan from Banana Republic in one of my wedding colors, navy (our colors are navy and cream).
ReplyDeleteI love the look of a cardigan over a wedding dress. I work for a florist and wedding designer in Vermont and it gets cold early up here. One of our recent brides wore a beautiful burnt orange cardigan and chocolate brown blazer over her wedding dress for their photographs before the ceremony. She looked absolutely beautiful.

I can not even tell you how much I love you right now. I have been searching for WEEKS to find the original link to that first photo (since I clearly stumbled on it on pintrest). I am so enamored with the sweater over the dress idea. I just can't see myself having your typical big, festival wedding, so my boyfriend and I always joke about eloping (plus, we're broke post-college grads) and if we did, I swear, that is what I'm wearing. Comfortable, cozy, and very much...me.

I would really love to know who made the dress that is in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, picture (with the ruffles on the back of the cardigan, and the opening with more tulle in the front of the dress...the man is wearing a scarf). ReplyDeleteI love these pics! As for crying at my wedding, I thought I would considering I cry at everyone's wedding, but I didn't. It was so stress free, on the beach, with only immediate family there, and absolutely perfect. Seeing Chris in his white linen outfit looking so handsome gave me an overwhelming sense of calm. Six and half years later I fall in love with him more and more everyday.

ReplyDeleteWe were married last year outside in a freak blizzard (our anniversary this year was during Sandy, what's next :) I was so thankful that I had grabbed my great aunt's fur trimmed vintage cardigan that morning. Not only did it keep me warm, it was the perfect "something old", and looked amazing in all of the snow photos we took.

ReplyDeleteLove all of them! I would definitely have considered it - my first wedding I wore a printed long dress (I was 22) - it was January, but sunny and in the 70s. Second wedding was in October (30 years later - different husband) and I wore a dark green suit. But...I love cardigans - wear one almost every day - so these brides look great to me!

ReplyDeleteyears ago, before i even met my husband, i bought a beautiful Nanette Lepore ivory cashmere cardigan with a silk ruffle neckline and cuffs off the sale rack at Anthropologie thinking that i'd wear it at my future autumn wedding. alas, i got married in July in Vermont in the midst of a record heat wave. i guess i'll continue to save it for something special!
I think cardigans and weddings are a perfect match...so that would definitely be a yes for me! And I especially love it when bride's match their cardigan with their color palette...so cute!

Oh I wish I can get married again (with the same person!!!) to wear a cardigan!!! My wife and I got married in a Mediterranean island in May, so there was no need of cardigans whatsoever. She did wear a denim jacket that night though, and she looked gooooooooorgeous!!! She was wearing the same dress as you did!! We both bought our wedding gowns in JCrew. We discovered them thanks to you! Since it was a same sex marriage it was a bit difficult to find two beautiful dresses that went well together, if you know what I mean.. Anyway, we looked gorgeous ;-)

I got married on Halloween and ended up wearing a white, fitted sweatshirt over my dress which actually was kind of awesome because the mix of sweatshirt and lacy dress gave off a punky vibe that suits me. It also made me feel less "precious" which was so necessary at the end of the night!
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion, some of those cardigan's are not fancy enough for a wedding. Particularly #1 and the other beige wrap-ish one. Love the red and mint green. Overall, I think it's a DO for the right wedding.
ReplyDeleteI just got married on October 7 in Toronto, and to travel to and from the venue, I wore a Banana Republic black blazer over top of my wedding dress ("Sarabeth" style from J. Crew). It looked really sophisticated and chic, and I was tempted to keep the blazer on all evening, but the back of my dress was so lovely, I didn't want to cover it up!

After the vows there was dancing and dinner in an open pavilion and Hannah wore a soft ivory sweater, a fur neck wrap and beautiful mocha leather gloves and was as warm for the evening as she always is warm in heart. It was a delightful look!

I got married in the fall and it was lovely. Turned out that we had a strange warm spell so the weather was absolutely perfect. I had a wrap that matched my dress, but I really do like the look of a cardigan with a wedding dress. In fact, I just first noticed this look yesterday when reading a blog post about a wedding and the bride was wearing one! Her look was vintage and it was really pretty.

We had a New Years Eve wedding (most fun EVER). I live in a very snowy place but we had a random warm snap so it was about 50 degrees outside. We took some outdoor photos before the ceremony and I wore an ivory wrap. My cheeks were nice and rosy by the time the ceremony started.

ReplyDeleteI had a Fall wedding. It wasn't supposed to be cold, but it was in the 50s and raining, so I pretty much had to wear a cardigan! I didn't wear it down the aisle, but i wore it the rest of the day :) It was mustard so it matched my decor. All of the women in these photos look so elegant! Mine was more casual, but then again, my wedding was extremely casual.

No I did not cry at my wedding but I will do my best not to cry at my son's wedding june 30th 2012. Happiness can make you cry as easily as saddness.

We live in Wisconsin, where spring weather is notoriously unpredictable. When I heard our wedding day weather forecast, I immediately ran to J Crew and found a beautiful navy blue merino cardigan that I wore over my knee-length ivory sheath, so I wouldn't freeze and be miserable all day long. We had outdoor photos, and I was so glad to have it to slip into, and it looked cute when I wore it in some of the shots. A wedding "do", for sure!

I had a Fall wedding and bought a sweet little cardigan on Etsy, but the weather was so unseasonably warm that I didn't end up wearing it until late at night. We were married in a vineyard and spent the night there in a vintage camping trailer, so we partied around the bonfire all night long! It was the most fun Ive ever had!

I would wear one if I had to! I had a winter wedding in 2010 - Jan 2, although in Houston and we don't really get a real winter. The weather was really nice! Our ceremony was outside. Not cold enough for a cardigan though.

We got married on December 20th. Perfect time of year- everyone is in such a celebratory mood!

It's the first cardigan I've ever made, and though it's not done yet I'm quite satisfied with the result. There's also another story to this cardigan since I began knitting it just about the time when I got pregnant. Now I just have to find a dress that goes with it (and fits my growing belly) ...

ReplyDeleteMy hubby and I got married mid-winter on a farm in a valley, we had a gorgeous sunny day and it only got colder later that afternoon, I wore a knitted wrap over my wedding dress for when it got cold and it worked so beautifully with the rustic setting and casual tea party out in the mountains.

ReplyDeleteThe wrap cardigan shown above was inspiration to me (I can't remember where I saw it posted originally) and I bought a fuzzy, cashmere number from BHLDN that I adore. My wedding isn't until December 30, which is a shame because I know I'll wish I could add my beautiful cardigan to my Christmas party outfit rotation!

Gorgeous post! I love the mint green one in the fields. I've been having a wedding fever lately...A good number of my friends have been getting married one after the other this year. They all look gorgeous in their wedding dress that I can't help but day-dream about my own. I always wanted a beach wedding, but after seeing this post, I'm thinking a fall wedding over a blanket of maples leaves would be just as beautiful. Thank you, Joanna.

I loved the contrast of the yellow and soft knit with the voluminous big silk skirt... it kind of looked like a 2 piece!

I did a cardi for my wedding! A very delicate, light teal wool cardi on top of my me-made ivory silk dupioni dress. It was cold (late October) and the ceremony was outside so I had to wear a sweater. And you know I think it looks really cute, cozy and natural... less fussy! I love all the ones pictured here!
ReplyDeleteAnd I TOTALLY cried when saying my vows. I couldn't help it. I just felt everything I was saying, the vows I had written especially for my husband, and it made me weepy with joy.
We traveled by boat from our wedding to our reception so I wore a cardigan over my dress for that part of the day.
ReplyDeleteIt was a necessity more than a conscious choice although I've always loved the contrast between formal/evening dresses and cardigans. (And it ended up being a breezy day so I was pleased to have it.)
This post has made me wish a little that I had chosen a cardigan that could play more of a starring role in my bridal outfit.

ReplyDeleteI never go sleeveless so have knit a matching cropped cardi to wear with my strapless dress & plan to wear it for both ceremony and reception next November. To dress it up I'm beading the trim to match the belt and neckline details of the dress so it looks more like an ensemble and less like an afterthought.

The 4th couple down with the scarf and two-toned wedding dress-- I sent the picture to my best friend telling her that is what I wanted my wedding dress to look like next year, but I had no idea where to get something like that. She texted back and told me that she knows that couple because she went to college with them! Now I can ask her directly where she got it. Thanks for posting it so I could make that connection!!
