What are you up to this weekend? A pipe burst in our apartment last Saturday night (drag), so we've been staying with friends all week. Right now, we're staying at my friend Leigh's house in New Jersey, and I have to say, Toby has become a big fan of the suburbs, with grassy backyards, basement playrooms and minivans you can climb around in. Our apartment is going to seem teeny when we go back! Hope you have a great one, and here are a few fun links from around the web...
If you are around NYC this weekend, Stone Barns is having its annual Harvest Fest.
Everyone's favorite scent.
Lena Dunham is writing a book!
What an inspiring take on beauty.
Little artist costumes.
Easy apple breakfast.
A tattoo for overenthusiasts (like myself).
I want to eat this cookbook cover.
A mountaintop wedding.
Shades of autumn.
Eight birthday traditions to try.
Rad Obama stamp.
Dog ears.
Who wants to ride in this hot-tub boat?!
A few readers asked for more loafer suggestions, so here are:
* Penny loafers.
* Gold loafers.
* Oxblood loafers.
* Less expensive loafers.
Plus, three fall posts you may have missed:
* Hot air balloon ride.
* Pumpkin cupcakes.
* Being outside.
Finally, thank you for all your heartfelt comments on the sleep post. It's amazing to witness how much everyone loves their children and wants what's best for them, and the beauty of that is how we can all figure out what that means for our sweet families. xoxo

never lived in a city...always lived in the burbs....we do sort of get set in our ways...I'm sure our lives are very different, yet oddly similar
ReplyDeleteDog ears?! *tear/sniffle* I love it!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Lena Dunham and GIRLS, and can't wait to read her book! We watched the first episode and my fiance, who is 13 years my senior, turned to me and said, "That is way too scarily close to the last five years of your life." She's honest and raw, and I adore her. Thanks for the link!
ReplyDeleteOther than the bad part about the pipes breaking, y'all - or Toby - got a mini vacation out of the big city :) Have a great weekend!

That apple breakfast is such a great idea! Especially this time of year with the abundance of apples.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Jersey!
good luck getting your pipes fixed!
ReplyDeleteI'm so going to! :)
ReplyDeleteFall Pictures *will* be produced :)
Eat Cake
Oh, so sorry about the broken pipe. Hope your flat will be fixed soon:) Btw: that dog print by William Wegman is really cool and totally adorable:)Happy weekend. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh no! It must be so annoying to be displaced with a toddler. Lovely pictures; I bought my boyfriend a brooks saddle last year- there are little works of art :)
ReplyDeleteI love your posts. So creative and alive!
ReplyDeleteHow has apartment hunting been going?
ReplyDeleteOr you could live in a smaller city and get the best of both! We drive a car and have a small yard but all the amenities of a city
ReplyDeleteIf I may make a Loafer suggestion, Joanna (alas, they're not shiny ones, BUT!) I got a great pair of (extremely affordable) loafers from Target. I wear them ALL the time. They're super comfortable, casual and stylin'.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love the story you shared on the Sikh woman, thank you...more women should recognize that inner beauty shows your strength were your exterior beauty is like the cover of a book.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the pipes--and thanks so much for the story about the young Sikh woman. Way to put my worries in perspective!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the pipes!
ReplyDeleteMaria
I love to have apple pie in my breakfast. You're blessed with all the things while living there without a big effort. What about the pipe burst? Have you got it repaired?
ReplyDeleteThat really sucks about your apartment!!! I grew up in an old country house in Oregon so I know what's all about!!
ReplyDeleteI love that Obama stamp and am equally as excited for Lena's book as I was for GIRLS ! Happy Weekend!
The Sikh lady is incredible - how humbling she is!! I love something Kristin Armstrong said once - how she realised that beauty wasn't something external to be attained and strived for but was the reflection of the person on the inside. She said it better, obviously. This lady is the embodiment of the beauty Kristin meant!
ReplyDeleteI love all these links but that wedding photos at the top of the mountain!! my Godness!!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend :)
Un beso from Spain
What a great story about beauty. Thank you so much for putting that in front of me. It will be in my mind all weekend.
ReplyDeleteHope things are going ok with the apartment situation! :)
PS: LOVE the Obama stamp! :)
Obama, really? I thought you were intelligent.
ReplyDeletelena writing a book- just made my whole week!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for these Friday posts. I look forward to them at the end of my work week. They always make for a smile, a laugh, deeper thoughts and lighter thoughts. I love the Obama stamp. Sorry to hear about your apartment troubles.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is one of the very, very best. Happy Fall to you and yours.
Bekah~
Adorable Obama stamp
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it this week! Hope the pipe situation gets fixed soon!
ReplyDeleteI will work two 16 hour shifts with a few hours of sleep between. Fun times! I had wanted to rake my 4 year old to the pumpkin patch, but I haven't had a chance to yet. Hopefully next week.
ReplyDeleteNorcross is having its Art Festival this weekend :) It will be our first time and I'm excited to check it out. IKEA might be on the agenda too :) xx
ReplyDeleteSo I see in your About Me section, you grew up in France, I thought of you as British for some reason, anyway how long did you live in France?
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who finds the first apple picture a little dirty? Gah, my horrible mind.

I loved that story about beauty. How inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJoanna! I can't believe the "8 birthday traditions" article is from Calgary Child! I'm from Calgary so it was such a sweet surprise, and to see it travelling far across the country and beyond :). It really is a lovely city surrounded by mountains- you should consider it for a future trip! ;) x.
ReplyDeleteSeattle has an amazing hot tub boat company, first in the world!!

hope the pipe is sorted and not left you with too much work when you return!
ReplyDeleteI thought the dress was really beautiful in the mountain top wedding. I love weddings.
ReplyDeleteSally :)
Thanks to this post I have decided to be Andy Warhol for Halloween. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. That wedding dress is perfect. How romantic. I could never get married on a mountaintop though as I have a perpetual fear of heights :)
ReplyDeleteAs for my weekend? I'm staying in with a good book (rereading the Hobbit, I am absolutely a dork) and a big mug of tea. It is just too cold to do anything else in my neck of the woods!
Oh those children Halloween costumes are adorable! The Van Gogh one is sort of odd, but still neat! Thanks for sharing these awesome links!

Petrichor - for the girl who's tired of waiting!
ReplyDeleteLove the links! especially that wedding. gorg! but obama? i mean come on. seriously?!?! He's the worst president our country has ever had! You're smarter than this! I know you are!!! I feel it in my bones!! hahaha : )
ReplyDeleteSo amazing and beautiful post.I just found this blog by fashion and beauty blog's search.This is so informative and awesome blog.I appreciate your effort very much.
ReplyDeleteFashion 2012
love it all!
ReplyDeleteIt is so frustrating that people have said you are not intelligent because you posted that Obama stamp. Politics are all opinion, so shame on you who insult anyone who disagrees with you!
ReplyDeleteNice pics, Hubby and I are staying in this weekend with the exception of grocery shopping. Is it just me or does grocery shopping on the weekend totally suck?
ReplyDelete<3 Dana @ This Silly Girl's Life
I loved the mountain top wedding!
ReplyDeleteThe Obama stamp was great, I just saw him on Thursday when he came to Madison to speak ;D
And who knew there was actually a word for the smell after it rains... petrichor...
well even my mac doesn't know that word, it thinks its misspelled, hehe
Hey, Joanna! I love your weekend roundups..just wanted to mention to you though that it seems like some of the text on the new layout has gotten smooshed...over on the right where you have your mini-bio, the links for 'About Me', 'Contact', and 'FAQ' are right up underneath the other text. I know the words 'husband' and 'toddler son' have hyperlinks embedded and they are hard to find with the other links there.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let you know! (and by the way, this is the new design that I voted for!!)
I saw your husband and sweet little guy today!
ReplyDeleteI've been following your blog for a few years (got hooked on those weekend round-ups) as I am a former Michigander turned east-coaster myself. I've been living in Brooklyn for a few months now, but don't make it to your neck of the woods so often. Had one of those double-take moments where you can't place how you recognize someone's face, scanning all the routes of meeting someone (work? friends? grocery store?) and then I saw Toby and it clicked. They were adorable, rolling around the stroller on a cozy grey day. From one Michigander to another - well done!
This blog is very well written and I appreciate your efforts.. Keep up the good work.

Amazing post!

WOW! So good idea to have a weekend like this!

I commented before, but I wanted to add about loafers (since I wear them nearly everyday) the less expensive ones can be just as cute and comfortable as the expensive ones. I have the gold Anthropologie pair and they cut into my heels a bit, but with a band-aid and insole they're not bad. My favorites though are Steve Madden's loafers. I have a black studded pair, a pair of patent burgundy penny loafers, and a pair of leopard loafer/flat hybrids and they are fabulous! Comfy, relatively cheap (I paid no more than $30 a piece) and super cute.
ReplyDeleteThat cookbook is going on my wishlist for my birthday next week! I did a little research and guess what, the author will be in New York the coming week: http://www.yvettevanboven.com/archives/2215
ReplyDeleteIs it bad that I came into this post (from Google reader) to see what ignorant comments would be made about the Obama stamp? People never disappoint! Although they shouldn't have said anything about you. :(
ReplyDeletePetrichor is possibly my favourite word!
ReplyDeleteNice to saw the apple with leaves.....
