Last night, after the power went out, this was the view from our window in downtown Manhattan. Eerie! You can barely see the buildings against the sky. The other odd thing is that our neighborhood was silent. Normally our street is very busy, and we can always hear cars driving by, honking, people chatting—all the normal sounds of a big city. But last night, it felt like we were sleeping in the middle of the woods; totally silent. How are you guys doing today? Sending our thoughts to you and your loved ones. xoxo

ReplyDeleteThat is so crazy to see! Being in northwestern Wisconsin, I'm not feeling anything from the big storm. But some of my family went on vacation to NYC this last week and are now stuck there! Also, I have a friend in Michigan and she is getting very strong wind, rain, and snow! Hope you all stay safe!

Florida is quite safe these days - but I have family in NY, NJ, and PA and I'm thinking about all of them! Your view was quite gorgeous, and it seems quite serene with the quiet!

ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are okay. We lost some apple trees, but nothing major. Last year, my little neck of the woods was completely decimated by Irene/Lee, and the clean-up still isn't finished. Luckily we were spared. My heart goes out to those affected, as I know how bad it is!

I was in town this weekend and was supposed to leave Monday, but of course my flight was cancelled. I don't know how I lucked out, but I was able to get on the very last flight out of LGA Sunday night that took me straight home. Yea! That city shut down!

i love when we have power cuts.....forces a calm romance into the busiest of lives. We get a couple power cuts a year living in the french country, after a few days the romance slightly wears off!

ReplyDeleteVERY eerie! Amazing how this type of thing changes one's perspective, isn't it? Someone told me that a major street was shut down in NYC once and everyone was in the street playing football and that it was quite a sight to see. I remember once our power went out when I lived in AZ and we all sat around looking at each other, like, okay, what do we do now? we ended up piling in the car and driving around chatting with the neighbors.

Yikes, creepy!! We didn't get hit too hard, no power outages in my neighborhood, but transformers were blowing up all over the place last night, it looked like blue lightning!

Im not too far a few hours away from you . we got flooding and lights were off now everything is just cold and rainy. I love my home state but not when there isnt no lights oh new york. lol
ReplyDeleteI live in Chelsea and luckily was 1 block away from where ConEd shut off power so I've had power the whole time. It was crazy though, like you said, looking out the window and not seeing any people or cars. The only things on the road were constant fire trucks.

A very eerie darkness and silence, like being out in the country with no lights or neighbors. It's a strange thing how quiet people get when this happens. Very few places have power.

ReplyDeleteWow! At first I was waiting for the photo to load, then realized that that WAS the photo! Amazing. There's a children's book called Blackout http://www.amazon.com/Blackout-John-Rocco/dp/1423121902 that this reminds me of (though it is just a regular power outage and has nothing scary/tragic associated)...my two year old loves the story! It says, "And then/The lights/Went out/All of them. The city was dark...and quiet." Hope you get power restored soon and stay safe!

ReplyDeleteHope you got power back - I'm in Maryland, and we were lucky. My stepdaughter lives in the West Village - we heard from her as she and her roommate were walking uptown to stay with a friend who had power.

we lost power until last night, and the hudson river overflowed up to 1 block from our house! and we live in jersey city a little over a half a mile from the river! power's back because we live so close to the PATH trains... thankfully! pray for those along the shores in long island, jersey, and especially staten island...

Did you find it difficult to fall asleep? There is such a thing as too quiet when you're used to the noise don't you think?
ReplyDeletethat is one of the coolest shots i've seen so far of the storm + its effect...it's really striking, since my eyes first thought it was an all-black shot, and only once i looked closer, did i see the tonal change where the buildings are silhouetted.
