Dressing the part

Today I'm flying cross-country to San Francisco! I'll be giving a presentation on Wednesday morning, so my trip is just 24-hours long. I haven't taken a business trip in like five years, and it feels exciting. Also my twin sister Lucy lives there, so we'll be jam-packing some quality time into one evening together. (We're thinking Italian food and Mindy Kaling.)

If I could pack anything in my suitcase, I'd choose one of these shoes or bags. J.Crew has been nailing it with their new handbag and shoe shop. They'd transition well from work to play, and wouldn't they lovely for fall? See the full collection here.

Yahoo, San Francisco, here I come! (I've been told not to call it San Fran:)

  15. I LOVE that you said not to call it San Fran. I live there and cringe every time I hear it. Problem is there's really no polite way to tell somebody that noooo one who lives there would ever say that, b/c it's such a minor thing. So yes, thank you.

**As someone who lives here, calling it San Fran or Frisco immediately gets you labeled as a tourist. We call it the city or San Francisco.

    1. I've heard the locals used to call it Frisco.. and then I heard only non-locals call it Frisco! So what DO the locals call the City by the Bay?

      Delete
    2. We call it "the city". Or San Francisco, which comes out sounding like "Sarencisco". Sometimes "SF" is appropriate. It's true that some very old-timers can get away with "Frisco" but they're the only ones... and San Fran just pegs you as a transplant, usually from the Midwest. :)

    3. Hallelujah!! Finally a blog post on this, that gets it right! :) I have yet to meet an old-timer who says Frisco. ps. I'm allergic to "Frisco" - I break out in hives when people say it. pps. the only time I don't call it the city is when I'm around New York people.

  40. Yes, definitely not San Fran nor Frisco. San Francisco or SF work fine. But who knows, maybe a few years from now calling it SF will be touristy and us locals will be calling it something else (like Oakland :) )

  65. Yes. Native San Franciscans (like me!) only abbreviate the name as either SF or The City. Do NOT, under any circumstances, refer to it as 'Frisco!

    Have a wonderful trip!

    ReplyDelete
  66. San Fran is fine. Just don't call it Frisco.
Enjoy our amazing town. If I may suggest...you can get tremendous Italian food in NY, but there is a tiny wonderful little restaurant by Ocean Beach called Outerlands (at Judah and 45th Ave) which will make you want to go home, pack up the family, and move to SF ASAP. I highly recommend it. No reservations. Just show up at 6pm when they open. Have fun!

  67. San Francisco is my favourite city to visit. Enjoy.

I love those mary jane pumps.

    ReplyDelete
  69. how exciting!
But oh no, from a native, never san fran and never ever frisco.
SF or 'the city' when you're in town and 'the bay' covers a lot of territory but includes the city, you're in 'the bay' when you're in the city.
it's so funny, these things.. have a wonderful trip.

  70. We went to San Francisco on my honeymoon and my best friend (who'd lived there) said the same thing about not calling it San Fran. She said it's a sure-fire way to tell you're a tourist! Funny :)
