Date night tip

I've realized something in my old age...

If you go on a classic dinner-and-a-movie date, see the movie FIRST.

Back when Alex and I went on our first date, we went to see a thriller first, which gave us a kickstart to our dinner conversation. (That was helpful especially since we were nervous!) We also could eat leisurely and drink wine without worrying about getting sleepy later on. Ever since then, we always go to movies first. I know it's a little thing, but it makes date nights way more fun, I think.

What do you think? Do you usually go to movies before or after dinner? Seen anything good lately?

P.S. How to keep the sparks flying, and NYC date ideas.

So simple, but never thought of doing the movie first. Thanks for the tip!

I like your idea! Brilliant. Also I love your blog's new look.

That is incredibly smart! Plus you don't fall asleep in the theater from your food coma ;)

we usually go to dinner before the movie. but this is excellent advice, because we are usually rushed. i guess the key is to go to the movie early enough.

Yes - I love seeing the movie first, even when I'm just going out with girlfriends. I hate having to rush through dinner to make sure we're in time for the movie!

My husband and I go to dinner first then a movie. That way we weren't tempted to pig out on all the yummy "movie" snacks.

What a great advice. It's so true, too – movies make me sleepy, so it's straight to bed whenever we get home. The husband will appreciate this tip. ;)

I think the best thing about this would be that you aren't so stressed about "making" the movie time. Also.. you probably will get better seats at the theater because you will be there when lots of other people are at dinner. The only thing you might run into is that depending on where you live.. there may not be as many late night dinner spots if the movie lets out later than 9 or so.

You also may be "too full" of popcorn to even eat much dinner.

Wait.. that might be a positive for the one who is paying for dinner.. you might be a'cheaper' date..lol

My husband and I love to see a movie or show before dinner too!!

this is so amazing! i'll be more likely to stay awake during the movie if i know dinner is coming shortly after :P

It makes sense. Last movie I saw with my bf was Savages. Not sure if it's on theaters anymore in the States. Strongly recommended! It has several very graphic scenes -of course, it's Oliver Stone!- but other than that, it's a pretty powerful and insightful movie. XOXO

So funny. Because it's exactly what we does on your second date with my boyfriend and i. And I remember really enjoy it.

Amanda said...

We always do the movie first too. Sometimes if I've eaten and had a drink or two at dinner, I don't feel like sitting in a movie theater afterwards. I love the new blog look, btw!

I always get too hungry to not have dinner first and then too grumpy hungry to enjoy the movie which is usually around dinner time 7-9 pm.

Funny you mention this. I'ver never done the dinner and a movie thing but I'd think it is best to see the movie first because then you have loads to talk about at dinner! Hmm...it just makes sense!

That's a great idea! Although, most movies times are either at 4ish, or at 8ish, which makes for a very late dinner. Not too much in between!

My husband and I love going before dinner! It seems like the crowds are less, both at the movies, and the restaurant. And we like not feeling like we will be late to the movie!

Agreed -- definitely movie first! Much less rushed, especially since I always feel like I have to get to the movie super early to secure tix and good seats...I think Larry David even does a little riff on this subject in a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode.

That really is a good idea. We usually go after and I'm always so sleepy from the wine I had with dinner! Thanks for the tip!

on a similar note...when my boyfriend and i are going out for a date-night dinner, we always make sure to have sex first :) otherwise, too full and sleepy by the time we get home!

Great idea! I always think Dinner & A Movie but never thought to mix up the order. :-)

Just wanna say, I love how obsessed you are with Annie Hall. She's my hero.

My boyfriend and I have recently started seeing movies early in the morning on Saturdays or Sundays and then we either get brunch before or after the movie. It somehow makes the day or weekend feel much longer and there's hardly ever a crowd.

We're usually the youngest couple in the theater by a good 15 or 20 years, but we don't mind a bit. :)

Emily said...

Smart idea! Plus, not only might you beat the "typical" dinner crowd, but you can still get home early enough for bed or the babysitter (my mom is our sitter and has a terrible time staying out late!)

Shera said...

Great idea! Have you seen Searching for Sugarman? It's a documentary that is currently in theaters. I can't recommend it enough. Amazing story! (And the movie is so much better if you don't know anything before you see it.)

I love the new look Jo. Congratulations. Jx

That's such a small thing but such a good idea haha. Makes so much sense! I feel like whenever I do dinner before a movie we are always rushed and then I feel full and sleepy during the movie! Love the new blog look!

Yup! I TOTALLY agree. Plus, if you drink too much at dinner, you won't fall asleep during the movie ;)

I love this idea. Now if only going to the cinema in australia didn't cost $50 for two people (not including dinner) I'm sure we'd do it more :)

Awesome tip! My husband and I love doing this one a double date with our "best couple". Great Gatsby and Les Mis are on the list!

fascinating idea! i find that it's hard to find food places open after a movie though. but i guess if i hit a 5:30 or 6pm movie that would work, huh?

Ooh, that's a good one! My husband and I love movies, so we go on dinner-and-movie dates a lot (we used to call it the Dante-Hicks-dinner-and-movie date, which is, of course, a movie reference). One thing that I'd add on to this that sounds counterintuitive and is *not* for everyone:

When we're feeling like seeing different movies... we do. We always go to dinner afterwards though, because then we've spent all movie thinking about the parts that the other person would like, and what we're going to tell them. For my part, it makes me miss my husband even more and really excited to chat with him over dinner afterwards. We certainly don't do it a lot, because for the most part, we want to see the same movies. But it's a fun change of pace, and there's also the fondness you have for your partner that he doesn't make you go see the 5812nd Resident Evil movie with him!

always movies first!!! unless you're going to the late night 10:30pm showings. :)

You should kiss before you get too far into the date, to get it over with. Other than that, yes movie first, since it's too easy to fall asleep during a late movie!

I just told my husband about this and he said "oh. that's not what I expected you to say... I was hoping you would tell me about a new dinner and a movie tip where we sneak away for sex in between the two." Clearly I've married a quick thinking genius.

Joanna you have to go to Nitehawk in Williamsburg you get to have your cake and eat it too. They have very nice date seats for two and you get assigned a waiter who brings over food and cocktails while you watch your movie. Do it! You won't regret it.

Makes perfect sense! And also... if you are really enjoying your dinner time.. you don't have to hurry yourselves out of it to make the movie on time. Why haven't we thought of this yet??? Thanks Jo!

I thought you were going to say go to the movie first so you stay awake! Now that we've got little ones I often get very sleepy at the late shows :)

Ana Simões said...

I never, ever go to movies first. I'm a big movies fan and have both a particular taste in what I like to watch and a very low tolerance rate for people who don't agree with me. I know it sounds "bitchy", but I really just like to go to the movies with my sister or by myself. Never went on a date there (even when I was a teenager). Nowadays, if for some strange reason my husband wants to go to the movies with me, we have a non-discussion policy, because we always ended up fighting about our very strong opinions. So I believe if I ever went to the movies on a date, by the end of it, I would end up pretending I was feeling sick in order to not have dinner (and probably never see the person again), which would have put some serious restraint in my love life :)

h. said...

ha. too funny, I thought dinner after the movie was the norm... maybe it's an Australian thing?

Cheryl Hurley said...

We always go before the movie, but lament over how late we end up at the cinema! Love the idea of going to the earlier movie and staying up eating and drinking. Come to think of it, that's how it was when we first met.. Though we'd usually go for cheesecake and end up order a feast!

You know I always prefer to go to the movie first too. But I think a lot of my reasoning is I'm always nervous that I'll have an upset stomach during the movie! Whereas if I see the movie first, I can relax and look forward to a nice dinner. :)

Victoria said...

Oooh, I never thought about that! I went out a lot on Saturday nights with friends in college and we always saw the movie and then went to Ihop for some late night food. It was great. A little over a month ago, I went on a sorta blind date and he took me for dinner and a movie (dinner first). It was the worst date of my life. Dinner conversation wasn't good at all (I haven't seen the guy since!). Might have to try your trick for my next date.

Shan said...

I love this idea! My boyfriend and I both have a horrible sense of time, and I HATE missing the previews. It's actually a bit like Alfie in the opening of Annie Hall when he refuses to go into the movie late because he'll have missed the credits :)

My husband and I just had our first dinner and movie date since our little guy was born and we opted for dinner first. Never again. All we could think about was making the movie on time, and it was at one of our favorite places where you ALWAYS make room for dessert. Sadly no room that night (no time actually), plus I missed the opening credits which is the worst!

After that experience and this post, definitely seeing the movie first!

Jeneric Generation said...

I hate being rushed at dinner...why didn't I think of this? I guess we are creatures of habit. But, I am going to suggest this to my husband. Maybe he won't fall asleep during the movie if it is earlier! Haha.

gabrilea said...

Definitely going first to the movie and than to eat. Our (my and mine hubby) first date was totally strange, cause first we went to eat (as I won dinner with him), but the second date was Horror movie. As I do not scare such movies we really laugh and have much to say to each other after :)

G

p.s. first date was very very strange ... as I was speaking a lot ( I do it when my nerves are going out) and as he was choosing what we will eat at restaurant - he chose me fish. Yes, damn, fish.... not very esthetic look :) but I will write about my single and being in a relationship life. So first date story you will definitely hear :)
