Years ago I went on a business trip with a photographer, and she spritzed rosewater on her face during the flight. It was such a lovely (and fancy!) ritual, and after that, I was inspired to come up with my own trusty beauty arsenal when traveling. (I basically pare down my everyday makeup to the essentials.) Here's what I've packed every trip since...1. Hair powder. Dry shampoo has changed my life, since you can skip showers and still have beautiful bedhead hair. This travel size smells like lavender and clary sage. $10.
2. Supercurl mascara. This mascara curls and thickens lashes so you'll look wide awake when you land. $20.
3. Chloe perfume is a fresh floral fragrance to keep you feeling pretty. $25.
4. Dopp kit. Unison Home has canvas toiletry bags in three different sizes to hold all those lotions and potions. $35.
5. Cucumber towelettes. I use these every night at home to wash my face (the lazy way!), but they're also perfect for traveling. The cucumber scent feels fresh and invigorating, $9.99.
6. Benetint gives your lips and cheeks a rosy glow, so it's my go-to cosmetic for a trip. (My sister actually wears this, and once I was raving about how pretty she looked, so she let me try it, and now I'm hooked:)
7. Muji Travel Pillow. This comfy pillow folds into a pouch and helps you actually sleep on a plane, $9.95.
(Plus, of course, I pack my face powder!)
What beauty products do you pack when you travel? I'd love to hear your tips...
P.S. Plane picnics (pack an orange!), and five best shoes for traveling.
(Post by Joanna. Layout design by Rachel from Elephantine for Cup of Jo. Top photo from Villa Brunella. I mentioned a couple of my travel staples on CNT, as well.)

Perfect! I'm heading to Lisbon for five months, but some of these are definitely on my list now.
ReplyDeleteMoisturizers from Make Up store are always with me when I travel.
this are all the perfect picks!
ReplyDeleteespecially for a long overnight flight.
xo the egg out west.
i HAVE to sleep with chapstick on, or else my lips are ridiculously chapped during the day... i LOVE carmex vanilla chapstick. carmex gets a bad rep for smelling medicine-like, and normally it comes in a tiny tin and you have to stick your fingers in it and stuff... gross. this is actually in chapstick form, and it actually smells good! but does all the wonderful healing that regular carmex does :)
ReplyDeleteI need the skinny on dry shampoo... I have long thick hair and it takes a very long time to dry -- either naturally or with a hair dryer. So, it could often look better. I've seen dry shampoo mentioned more and more often and wonder if it would work for me. Would you share more about your experience with it, or does anyone have a good source of info? I hope I am not overlooking a previous post on this...
ReplyDeleteI can't travel without earplugs. They help me sleep soundly and if you wear them while wearing those cheap headphones on the plane, the sound quality is better! Weird, but true!
I don't really have a set list of things I take, but I always make sure I wear my hair down to avoid getting a dreaded ponytail headache, and I always wear a cosy jumper so I can sleep on the plane! x
ReplyDeleteI use a moisterizer with SPF since the UV rays are more direct above the clouds. I also bring eye cream and chap stick (I love the nivea kiss of moister and Sugar in Rose).
ReplyDeleteI've heard about the rose water spritzing and it seems like such a great idea!
I've tried the Benetint before and I WANT to love it, but for some reason it won't pigment my top lip... So I end up with rosy cheeks and a single rosy lip!
This is the first year I did not really get to go anywhere on vacation because it conflicted with finals so my mom got to go and I didn't (tear). Maybe you can throw me in your suit case and maybe they won't notice? lol...fine fine maybe not...have fun on your trip! RoRos World
ReplyDeleteliving in Europe, I do a lot of travelling about and always bring minty gum and my glasses (nothing quite dries out contact lenses like airplane air!)
ReplyDeleteDry shampoo is also one of my go-to's, especially for busy business travel! Also key - khiel's lip balm, hand sanitizing towelettes, and bags of green tea and mint tea for the plane ride!

ReplyDeleteHa! I just got my first full-size bottle of Chloe perfume over the weekend. Absolutely amazing scent.
ReplyDeleteMy travel must-have are the Colgate Wisps, those little brushes with mouthwash beads on them that scrub your teeth and make your breath smell fresh.
The chapstick is necessary, I agree! And so is a large scarf that can double as a blanket or pillow.
ReplyDeleteI always travel with Vaseline for my lips and a combination hand sanitizer/lotion for my hands. My skin and lips get so dried out when I fly! Yuck!

Something Ivory
On our last long flight (from Memphis to San Francisco), my husband and I played SPA in our seats. I brought face cloths, thermal water mist, moisturizing face mask, eye-lotion, face lotion, lip balm, fuzzy socks and face (sleep) masks for both of us. I think that by the time we were done with our routine, we were already over Colorado. We took a short nap and woke up in San Francisco happy and smelling really good, our faces drenched with good skin food (which is NOT how I usually feel after getting off a plane). I know it probably looked a little bit weird to the passengers around us but we didn't care, it was totally worth it and we plan to do it again!
ReplyDeleteOh! I love the Herban essential towelettes too! I use the Eucalyptus ones when travelling because they smell refreshing and are naturally antibacterial....great for wiping skeevy stuff down at the hotel. (I once wiped the phone receiver and the cloth came out BROWN :P)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your list, Joanna!!

waiting for kittenheart
So I know this post is about packing for a trip, but I kinda want all of this stuff for home, especially the Lulu hair powder and cucumber towelettes...and perfume!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect travel must-have list! I've heard such great things about Benetint... I need to try this stuff! Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI can't agree more about the dry shampoo!
ReplyDeleteI'm a brunette and I keep a little tin of pure cocoa powder to sprinkle into my locks when they're feeling greasy on a long-haul flight to Asia.
I have traveled with the Benetint- awful idea! It broke and got into everything in my purse. Definitely meant to stay in the medicine cabinet at home haha
ReplyDeleteI love seeing how other people travel! I travel all the time so I've gotten pretty good at it. Key items: slipper socks, an eye mask, moisturizers for hands and face, lip balm, hand sanitizer, eye drops and yes, a tiny makeup kit for touch-ups. I'm not a fan of benetint (makes me look feverish) but I love cha cha tint, though I agree with the comment here that I don't think it's that great or safe for travel. I just discovered Stila's convertible color, and it's perfect for travel - small, compact, beautiful natural color for cheeks and lips. I also bring a tiny sample jar filled with a few drops of my foundation to use on any redness.
ReplyDeletehttp://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/
I have a somewhat similar set of things packed for my transatlantic flight tomorrow, but with a mini Klorane dry shampoo. I've never seen the Lulu powder, must try! I'm hooked on dry shampoo. I like to see how long I can go without washing my hair now--it seriously looks better when I do go at least three days! It grosses people out when I tell them, but we aren't meant to wash out hair every day!
ReplyDeleteI also love saving up all the various beauty samples I get with beauty.com and Sephora purchases and putting them in my carry-on. That mini moisturizer or face wash feels so luxurious on a long flight.
I use the rose water spritz trick as well, always pack a nice thick hand cream, a satin eye mask, and a big pashmina that can double as a blanket. I'm adding hair powder and cucumber wipes to the list now for sure!
ReplyDeleteI love that the Muji neck pillow is on here! I never travel anywhere without it. It's the best car and plane pillow (also works as a great arm rest for holding up a heavy book or ipad), and it takes up no space in your bag. It's also great for laying around at the beach/park, as laying with your head flat on the ground is never comfortable.
ReplyDeleteA travel toothbrush and toothpaste are always in my bag on a plan, as well- clean teeth are so refreshing!
I always have with me, tooth brush, mini tooth paste, anti bacterial wipes, deodorant, blush, concealer , eyeliner, lip gloss and little perfume.
ReplyDeleteMy trips are usually very long, not that I travel very far, but I normally take a plane and then a bus or two.
The cucumber towelettes you recommend are different than the ones in the picture?
WOWWWWWW!!! The benetint is fantastic!!!! I use it since 2 years!
ReplyDeleteBESOS FROM BARCELONA!
http://demodayaloloco.blogspot.com.es/
That is fabulous! Definitely some items I want to try. I haven't had an overnight flight in a while, as I tried to get a day flight. However, I need to make my own little travel kit.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute : )

I just bought a bottle of Chole and am in love with it...it's a lovely fragrance! I also always carry and extra plastic bag or use the laundry one from hotel room to stash my used-dirty clothes in it.

I'm going to Africa for 2.5 weeks this coming November, and these look like great things to bring with! Especially since going to Africa will be two days of flying.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Well, that hair powder sounds wonderful- I use a shampoo bar right now, but this is another great sounding option. And I love that it's only $10!
ReplyDeleteThe towelettes are also great to pack when traveleing- so handy!
I bring a small bottle of vitamin E oil, almond scented, with me wherever I go- great for rubbing a bit on my lips and around my cheeks to brighten my face :)
Also never travel without: tweezers, small spritzer bottle with water and a few drops of lavender oil, and a small compact mirror. oh! and baby powder :)
Such great advice! And so true too. I always have water for my face too - it seals all the make up and instantly refreshes. I always have a little travel size( sample size from nordstrom) foundation ( aqua lumiere from chanel) with me. Nothing like under-eye bags that make you tired. That foundation is magical: feels like nothing, covers the "black and blue", but I have all my freckles still! that's my magic trick.

oh joanna would you consider putting together a list of what to wear while visiting new york city in the fall. i will be doing lots and lots of walking and going to see jack white at radio city music hall at night. so what to wear to that would be great too! thanks!
ReplyDeleteAirplanes always make me feel dehydrated, and my skin feels dry as well, probably from the dry air onboard. Drinking plenty of water (and not too much of the complimentary wine) on the plane ride always helps, along with rose water as you mentioned.
ReplyDeletei found travel bottles of dry shampoo spray. it's the brand i always use, so that was perfect. yes to cucumbers makes face wipes are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI also went to the Container Store and bought travel spritz bottles. that way i can bring my favorite body spray with me.
I love Benetint!! I use it every single day and usually it is the only 'makeup' I put on when I am feeling lazy!
ReplyDeletejessicalfly.blogspot.com
Love this! I'm going on a trip to Nashville next week, and this will definitely help me pack! I simply can't go on a plane without a neck pillow. Thanks for sharing!

water and an orange!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I'm a long-time reader and fan of yours (been following since 2008) and I've always appreciated your recommendations and have even tried a few products/tried some restaurants on your recommendation (love Cafe Cluny! tried a Blanca Monros Gomez wedding ring!).
ReplyDeleteBut as a result of having been following you for a while, I remember a lot of your past posts. This is the third time you've re-posted past content in the past months without mentioning that you've written basically the same thing before. This post is ALMOST WORD FOR WORD as a post you wrote for Conde Nast traveler in March (http://www.cntraveler.com/daily-traveler/2012/03/Joanna-Goddard-Airplane-Bathroom-Primping).
What really bothers me about this particular re-posting is this: your readers have recently called you out for re-posting pieces from your days at Smitten. So instead of re-posting something from there, you re-post something from Conde Nast. From my perspective, it seems like you're assuming that fewer people follow your Conde Nast work, so that there's less pf a chance of being "caught in the act." This is incredibly sneaky and blatant self-plagiarism. And really, it is just poor and unethical journalism.
But here's the thing: I really wouldn't mind if you re-posted these things if you simply mentioned it before. I completely understand that coming up with new content all the time is challenging and that sometimes topics beg to be re-vistited. But when you re-post without crediting it, it is disrespectful to your readers because it seems that you're assuming either that we don't remember the past posts (we do!)or that we're just not worth mentioning to. It's hurtful in a way.
You've lost a reader in me, which is upsetting because I really used to enjoy your blog. Best of luck.
I'm intrigued...do you still carry this lovely stuff now you have a toddler?? I used to have self-indulgent travel things like this and I loved it, but when we had our baby, my inflight bag was taken over by nappies/bottles/toys/books etc and it's never really recovered. How do you manage to carry these things and all the toddler paraphernalia as well?
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought that looked like Capri...I've been getting major Capri longings lately...gorgeous photo.
ReplyDeleteI can't say enough good things about Benetint! Being a stay at home mom I rarely put on make-up anymore, but for the playground/grocery/library trips at least I feel like I'm trying! It's perfect for travel!
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely have to try some of these - my travel bag is actuall full of Philosophy products because I LOVE their travel sizes. And their roll-on perfumes (specifically Falling in Love).

I always like fly in a nice pair of dark jeans with a comfy blazer type jacket. Plane cabins are always chilly and a jacket looks chic.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! For me its all about the moisturiser...a little bottle of argan oil is perfect! Makes skin glowy, and helps smooth dry hair. I usually skip the makeup when I travel, but I never forget my eyelash curler. Instantly wide awake peepers while fooling everyone that "this is just how I wake up looking...'' ha!
ReplyDeleteI always pack Evian mineral water spray, Lucas Papaw Ointment (this stuff is AMAZING! you can use it everywhere and it's unscented), a pillow like yours, Altoids minis, and headphones because I inevitably sit by the person that wants to tell me EVERYTHING about themselves ...
ReplyDeleteYears ago I made a bunch of linen sprays as holidays gifts - they are simply water + a few drops of your favorite essential oil(s).
ReplyDeleteNow I use my own bottle as linen spray, home freshener AND I spritz on my face! Super affordable way to get a refreshing face wake up :)
I've never had a beauty routine when I travel but now I'm thinking I should. You have some awesome tips here.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered a dry shampoo and can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteBut please, please wait until after the flight before you apply that perfume. There is most likely one or two chemically sensitive people on your flight and there is no escaping those toxic fumes for them.
These are great tips for travel. I have been looking for this organic dry shampoo. Thanks. I will also be adding that pillow to my current travel beauty routine. Great post.

PLACES TO SEE IN CAPRI -
ReplyDeleteMy brother visited there & I asked him for three "must do's." He said:
"Number one is the blue lagoon. Two is the ski lift. I guess the third thing is to ride on the buses which are so teeny but you'd do that anyway. Also, Marina Picola is an interesting area too but you will have to arrive through there. And I heard the green grotto is good too but I didn't have time to go. I think you can swim at that one where you can't at the blue grotto."
Enjoy yourselves!
I like to bring a Choclove chocolate bar on the plane because it comes with a love poem inside.
ReplyDeleteThe lemon towels sounds Devine! The Chloe perfume looks so sleek!

Thanks to a previous post, I'm addicted to those cucumber wipes. Perfect for those nights you just want to fall into bed and the thought of splashing water on your face is too much. I even got my husband hooked on them! I think benetint has multiple hues now, I'll have to try it again and see which is best for my skin tone!
ReplyDeleteWow. You are one lucky lady, Joanna. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteLove these, but any tips for must haves while traveling with a baby. First flight in two days!
ReplyDeleteI have been traveling for almost three months now and I adore my Benetint but I think the thing I am most thankful for is my Josie Maran Argan Oil! It is a miracle cure for everything from skin irritations, sun burns, dry skin, hair disasters and more. I am dreading running out and being unable to replace mine! http://www.sephora.com/argan-oil-P218700

I love rituals. They make me feel so grown up! I remember in the 70's watching my big sis come home from the drugstore with noxzema, sea breeze, and Tickle deodorant, and I couldn't wait to be able to perform these rituals on myself. I must say I adore all of your choices and would probably enjoy all of them.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I stayed at the Villa Brunella in Capri last fall for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it! Have so much fun!!!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me -- i need to get a good chapstick before winter comes! I never seem to have one when i need it! :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic photo!!You will not need anything!!Your smile only!!I wish you, good vacations!!!Kisses from Greece.
ReplyDeleteI love what dry shampoo does for my hair but for some reason I always get a migraine after. I think form the smell? I'll have to try this one if it smells better.
ReplyDeleteI always pack Caudalie's grape water facial spray. It's $8 for a travel size that lasts for a while. I love how refreshing it is during the flight. http://www.bluemercury.com/Facial-Toner/Caudalie-Grape-Water.asp
If I'm flying internationally, I ALWAYS stuff a toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste into my carry on. It makes such a difference to be able to go through customs, etc. with a freshened mouth.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I never leave home without Burt's Bees chapstick -- whether I'm traveling or not. It's a lifesaver.
Benetint is my go to whether travelling or not. Also, you forgot an eye mask by Mary Green. So clutch for sleeping on the plane and for anywhere on your travels that doesn't have that "blackout" you might need. and lastly, weleda skin food. heavy duty moisturizer and a lip balm in one.
ReplyDeletewww.prettydinos.com
I love the rosewater idea! I recently started using the Evian spray and that has worked wonders on long car trips and on flights. It really does help you feel refreshed and gets rid of that slightly groggy feeling you get when traveling.
ReplyDeleteGreat beauty tips!
missmelandmissheather@blogspot.com
To me, the absolute travel essentials are a good chapstick (smith's rosebud!) to slather on your lips, an extra large water bottle (cause they never give you enough), some refreshing essential oils for when I get anxious on the plane, and - most important - a travel neck pillow, but not the inflatable kind, the full-on one with the little beads: it makes a whole world of difference and allows you to sleep like a baby!
ReplyDelete@Athena, I didn't see that muji pillow on CNT. #cupofjo4life
ReplyDeletelove benetint! such a natural rosy look- summer and winter!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at Villa Brunella, Capri (top photo).
ReplyDeleteThank you for transporting me back to that glorious place with this photo.
Wanderlust !!!
Have a lovely time in Italy. I've never been so I will live through your Italy posts. I don't have any must haves for flying. I just pack a book and I'm happy (and I do travel a lot) so I guess now I know I've been doing something wrong. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the hair powder and lemon towelettes suggestions. I am definitely going to try them. As someone who suffers has hypersensitivity to perfume smells, I kindly suggest that you wait to spray the perfume until you are out of the airplane. You may love the scent but everyone around you may not.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Berta, above- many people with asthma can have trouble breathing triggered by perfume sprays... now matter how lovely, just wait until you're off the plane... the lemon towelettes, however, shouldn't be a problem. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat list. You inspired me to make my own. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I also like to always travel with a toothbrush and toothpaste (especially for international flights) as well as some eyedrops. It's nice to feel like you have a clean mouth and moisturized eyes once you reach your destination.
ReplyDeleteGreat picks! I travel frequently and I'm all about convenience and products that multitask to lighten my load (hair powder and face wipes go with me everywhere!) I did a post about my favorite travel gadgets earlier this week and the beauty item that stood out is the Conair ThermaCell cordless curling iron. It's great for international travel (no need for an adapter!) and it fits in your purse for on-the-go touch ups.
ReplyDeletei can't live without my benetint - i just look so sick and yellow without it! but an even better brand is stainiac, but it's a tad more pricey for a smaller bottle. benetint works just fine for now though :-)

ReplyDeleteI love to use Trilogy's Hydrating mist toner infused with rose, lavender and geranium. Amazing! Also always carry Lucas Papaw Ointment for lips, dry skin and even itchy bites.
ReplyDeleteLove this list. I never travel without my eyelash curler. It can make you look rested even when you're not all!
ReplyDeleteThe most important thing for me to have on a plane is a pair of flip flops or another pair of shoes that are easy to slip on when I go to bathroom or need to stretch my legs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a dreamy place to go in the first picture.
ReplyDeleteHappy travels!
I absolutely have to bring with me Sephora deodorant wipes. That plus herbal wipes keeps me feeling fresh!
ReplyDeletelove the towlettes- and I'm a benetint devotee but think it's particularly good in hot weather because it stains and therefore sweats off less than normal blush!
ReplyDeleteLike this you have always everything you need with you.
ReplyDeleteI should also make a list like yours, with only a few things that are the most important for travelling.

ReplyDeleteA friend recently introduced me to MAC lip tint, it lives in my bag permanently!
Also getting my lashes tinted is VITAL to any trip...especially cause I have such lovely long lashes!
The other thing I never travel without is cold mineral water, hydration is, after all, the best cure for tired skin.

I use face wipes every night too! and was feeling guilty and lazy about it so now i have a trick. Each night after I clean my face, I use the same still damp towelette to clean my bathroom. Sometimes just the sink or sometimes the floor. But at least it is something. I recently found out my mom does the exact same thing!

Dry shampoo, mascara, Burt's Bees lip balm and Oxy face pads are my favourite travel buddies. I like to have as little as possible to juggle, especially for after long flights and they're my favourite products, plus they take up very little space and make me feel like 'me' again. :)
