Which of these romantic trips would you take?

Just for fun, let's talk about fantasy vacations! Which of these four romantic getaways would you choose, if you could hop on a plane tonight? Above is San Francisco, where you could take a sail underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, hike along the coast and wear lace briefs to bed.
Or you could whisk away to Paris and spend the day strolling down the cobblestone streets and the evening drinking rosé wine along the Seine. At night, you could head to one of these beautiful apartments and slip into a sexy black chemise.
You could fly to the gorgeous seaside village of Positano (we actually went here on our honeymoon!), and swim in the Mediterranean, eat fresh fish with lemon and wear a white robe by the pool.
Or you could venture to Kenya's Giraffe Manor, with 1930's decor and friendly giraffes who will peek into your bedroom window! You could wear a boyfriend sleepshirt to stay cozy in the cool evenings.

Which suits your personality best? Happy update: Eberjey is offering 20% off with the code CUPOFJO through this Sunday.

  7. OMG giraffes!!!!!! I want to stay there.

Not sure about going to Africa, but if I did, that's where I'd stay.

Been to Paris. The Italy one is probably the one I'd want to do the most.

Just sent the giraffe link to my boyfriend hehehe.

@anonymous 1:36 pm - what's your problem? She specified a specific hotel which happens to be in a city, you know.

Africa is not a country or even a homogenous region. Though I'm sure that darling sleep shirt can be worn anywhere, I think it's only fair to name Nairobi and/or Kenya as a specific destination.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Positano, hands down. Spent my birthday last fall there in a villa for a week. Instant love. I think I read about your honeymoon here, il San Pietro?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I admit, I felt the same as anonymous about mentioning what country in Africa. The giraffe place is in Kenya, which is a wonderful, beautiful, amazing country. But I would like to have this trip, visit many other countries in Africa, and Italy, San Fran, Paris. Can't go wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Italy! Always wanted to go to Positano- so beautiful in photos.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Italy, for sure. It is my dream destination, with Paris being a close second. It is fun to daydream about!

  18. Love this post darling! The matching works out SO well! I'd do SF sailing! (BTW, I have a pretty romantic weekend ahead in NYC and we'll be doing some of your NYC dates ideas!!!!) Thanks! xoxo

  20. Definitely San Francisco! It's one of my 'places to go'! Plus, it's so far away from Spain and Paris and Italy are closer...
One day I'll go to California for sure!

  21. I like this post, but I really wish that you (and Giraffe Manor, for that matter) would have referred to that destination as Kenya and not Africa. There are too many Americans who think Africa is a country because our media often refer to the whole continent at once. To link all of the complex cultures, economies, political systems, and peoples together as one entity does them a disservice.

I would love to go to Kenya!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been dreaming of a safari for years.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've been everywhere except Positano --- our African safari was pretty romantic but I think I'm leaning towards Positano. Perhaps it's the unknown that makes it feel more romantic?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kenya! San Fran is a close second- but if we are dreaming, I'll dream big.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hands down...PARIS!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Italy all the way. I would gladly spend all my summers in Italy, riding a vespa, having pizza a sleeping in old bead&breakfasts, just to wake up in the morning and dive into the blue mediterranean. I still dream of my Rome vacations and remember them as the best I ever had; now I'm planning a road trip all the way down to Naples. It will happen and I will love every single heartbeat of it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've been to Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, but not to stay--at the adjacent Giraffe Centre, you can also go as a visitor and feed giraffes from a platform!

  42. Definitely Paris.
I've been to Italy, and Kenya and San Fran just can't compare.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Giraffes are my favorite animal, so I'd probably have to go with Kenya. However, I'm so indecisive with my desire to travel, so I'd love to go everywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'd vote Italy for the romance and Kenya for the adventure. I've been to Africa and would love to go back. Giraffes are my favorite! so this hotel would be amazing to stay in.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm going to say San Francisco, sailing under the golden gate bridge sounds perfect right now!

I stayed at the Giraffe Manor for a night two summers ago before embarking on a whirlwind safari in Kenya's Masai Mara. Though battling intense jet-lag, the one night there was even more spectacularly breathtaking than I ever could have imagined! (And the family who owns the hotel is just lovely.)

Though battling intense jet-lag, the one night there was even more spectacularly breathtaking than I ever could have imagined! (And the family who owns the hotel is just lovely.) We sat on the patio, drank mimosas, and watched the sun rise high into the Kenyan sky as giraffes teetered by us.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh I would definitely pick Kenya! It's funny, I've traveled to several countries in Africa for my Master's program and volunteer work, but I never thought of any of the locales as particularly romantic (although definitely compelling and magical in other ways!). But a Giraffe Manor with 1930s decor? Yes please!! As long as they don't put giraffe on the menu!

    ReplyDelete
  65. POSITANO!

Jo, I have wanted to go there on my honeymoon ever since I was about 17 and saw Under the Tuscan Sun for the first time. And then saw the hotel Le Sirenuse in Travel + Leisure. It seems like one of the most beautiful places on earth.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Omg Giraffe Manor??? My fiance calls me a giraffe (I do have a long neck) and we have them all over our apt! I cannot wait to share that place with him. On another note, haha, we ARE going to start our honeymoon in San Fran! And lucky for me, I'm a Chicago Bears fan, and the day after we arrive, the 49ers are playing the Bears in Monday Night Football...so that would be my pick for a romantic trip :) Love this post!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not having ever gotten to go to any of those places, I would go anywhere! My first choice would be to see Norway though, probably with soft flannel pajamas... Italy would be my pick of those mentioned.

  80. One of the things my husband says he loves about me is that when most people see a picture of an exotic place, they think "how cool!"
I say "let's go!" (I actually usually pull a Liz Lemon and "I want to go to there")
So all of the above, please, for a variety of reasons. We're actually going to San Francisco in September, and I'm SO excited! Maybe I'll have to buy some lace briefs.

Jo, can you explain your policy on deleting comments? I ask because I was the Anon commenter who made the comment about using "Africa" in an Orientalist way, rather than specifying the city or country. I'm really glad to see that you changed it to be less offensive - thank you! - but can you explain why you delete some comments and not others?

I recognize that this is a personal blog, and you don't have to have comments or anything at all, but once you start advertising, etc. (which I have no problem with), you do become somewhat accountable to readers. So I think it's fair to have some guidelines on which comments will be deleted. To be clear, my comment said nothing hateful and used no offensive language. I think I said it was "whack" to call Kenya "Africa," which doesn't strike me as inappropriate or offensive.

    Thanks.

  89. anonymous, thanks for your note! i rarely delete comments (as you can see! there are many comments on every post--both good and bad:) and i'm happy to encourage debate and i welcome feedback. i deleted your anonymous comment right after i changed the wording from "africa" to "kenya," since i had answered your request (and was happy you had left it!) so your request had been answered. but if you want, you can repost it and i'll leave it up! i also actually kept another comment from Lauren saying the same thing (and responded to her in the comments, too). anyway, thanks for your note! i might put up a section on the "about me" or something about comments and how that is handled. thank you!!

  107. Anon 3:464:58 PM

Jo, thanks for getting back to me - I appreciate your being forthright. I think it's important to keep all comments up that don't violate a clear policy (for example, I think most would agree that comments with racial epithets or threats or that are otherwise hateful can be struck without notice), and to that end, it'd be great to see my initial comment back up! It just seems more honest to have a clear record in this community.

I think a delineated comment policy would be a great idea. Best wishes.

We went to Little Corn Island in Nicaragua for our honeymoon just a couple weeks ago. We got to swim in the sea and eat fish, but only for a couple of days before the tropical rains shut us down. It'd be nice to try those things again, plus I didn't have that lovely robe. That alone practically merits us a do-over :)

Tanzania was my favorite place hands down, would LOVE to return someday and do another trip to Zanzibar!

  149. San Francisco. Or Kenya. Tough call, believe it or not. LOVE their lingerie; have yet to convince myself to spend the money, though!

  152. I'm lucky to have been to San Francisco and Paris, but never to Italy, so definitely there. My husband is going to a wedding in Sorrento this September, but it's the same weekend I start a new job and I'll miss out. Completely gutted!

  153. Ohhhh ... there are aspects to all of them, but it would either be Italy or San Francisco.

Or a combination of both please:)

  154. OOhhh Positano! Lovely blue seas, lots of sun and swimming, fresh white robe and sheets. Perfect!

  155. You've listed the four places I long to travel to most in the world (add Athens and I'm done for). I went back and forth over these as if you actually offered them to me, haha!!!

Maybe I'll show my husband for help with the final (not real) decision and then go buy some lingerie!

  156. Been to San Fran and Paris - but would go back in a heart beat.

Italy is on my bucket list, and hoping to get there sooner than later!!

  158. Giraffe Manor!? Where do you find such interesting things??

PS Do you subscribe to Gilt's Jetsetter? I love to look at all the exotic/off-beat vacation packages and daydream. Plus, my boyfriend and I actually got a great deal on a beautiful bed & breakfast in Maine once :)

  159. Since I already live in the SF Bay Area, I would choose Italy or Paris. Ok, Paris! I went there for a week when I was 15 with my high school art club and looking back, I know I didn't appreciate the city at all. I would love to go back with just my husband. The kids can stay home with grandma!

I was looking at these and thinking how wonderful they'd all be, when I realized I've actually been to them all! Just not in sexy lingerie! haha ( except France, and Italy where we honeymooned) Kenya is amazing in a totally different way, as is San Fran.
I'd love to go back to Italy and see more of it - only got to spend a weekend there.

Thank you for reminding me of some of the amazing places I've been!

  169. All the trips are wonderful. And I love how they are paired with the perfect lingerie. Right now I am very much missing my friends in SF so I think I'd choose a trip back that way if I could pack up and go this very second.

WOW, i'd consider myself lucky with anyone of these trips. But for me it'd be between paris and italy. Paris has forever been a dream... but italy in the summer - dreamy

  171. ITALY! I've always wanted to go. I was headed there on a backpacking trip so many years ago, but on the way there, I tore a ligament in my ankle, and I never made it. :( The silver lining is that I will (hopefully) someday get to got there with my husband, which will be so much more romantic!

  172. ITALY!! Loved my trip to Positano in college (while studying for a semester in Rome), and I cannot wait to visit that romantic city with my hubby.

Paris would be the second choice.

  173. Those all sound amazing!

I just returned from a super romantic yet adventurous trip to the southern coast of Turkey along the Aegean Sea. I highly recommend it - most Americans don't go so all of the European tourists get to enjoy the beautiful blues of the Aegean Sea and the freshest seafood.

  174. If we're talking fantasy vacations it's DEFINITELY Kenya! It would be filled with all KINDS of new experiences, and I love that.

    ReplyDelete
  175. can I not take them all? If I had to choose one it'd always be Italy for me... or London but I already live here!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Hands down Positano, Italy. Paris is wonderful, but I've never been to Italy and my husband and I are dying to go. Does it still count as romantic to bring our 10 month old?
