Do or Don't: Bangs

The New York Times yesterday featured a funny piece about bangs. Apparently, 2012 is the "year of the bang," and you can wear them so thick you look "like one of the Beatles," or as short as "the mowed grass in Yankee Stadium." Do you have bangs? Do you want them? Bangs don't usually suit me, but I'm suddenly dying to go for it anyway.

Oh man: BANGS! I love them when I don't have them and hate them when I do! Story of my life. I'm constantly on and off with bangs. Shame it takes so long to grow them out :)

i'm always opposite the trends. i had very blunt cut bangs for several years and grew them out a couple of years ago. in my opinion, unless you have very stick straight hair or cut them so that they will fall into place naturally, they're too high maintenance. of course this is coming from a girl who doesn't brush or dry her hair. ever.

Bangs are tricky, they either work or they don't. One doesn't truly know until you're stuck with them.

When you have Keri Russell-curly hair, bangs are NOT an option. Which is sad, because I kinda like them...

I've got side bangs but have been itching for bang bangs.

If you want to try them out, maybe try them in the fall...it's hot having a little patch of hair on your forehead and you can't just push them aside (unless they're trained :)

I've had a fringe for quite a while now, and I can't imagine my hair without one! The only time I wish I didn't have it is when I play sport, as it gets sweaty and a bit disgusting!!

I struggle with bangs (so called 'a fringe' here in the UK).
I love it on other people but it just doesn't suit me at all. I've tried it twice now and have had to accept it makes me look odd and is too much hassle to maintain!

i love bangs! but i've been scared to cut them for fear of looking too much like my 16 yr old self. but i may take the plunge soon...

I got bangs earlier this year, and while I loved them... they definitely make me look 15-ish, a problem when you're a high school teacher!

I had bangs three years ago, a lovely heavy fringe like Anna Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada. I loved them, but they are hot during humid summers, they trap heat on your forehead. I would reccomend cutting them in the fall.

Morgan Stone said...

I'm thinking about taking the bang plunge as well. It's just so tempting when you see pictures like this of women looking so beautiful with them! I think I'm going to hold off until fall though - hot temps, sweat, and bangs do not mix for me!

I have them, but not in a straight cut style, I prefer mine in a sweeping style. I so wish I had Zooey Deschanels hair though (and her face, come to think of it) she is beautiful x

I impulsively got a fringe (English :P) and I regretted it so much. I kind of went through a 'oh my life is awful' stage and took it out on my long long hair to get a fringe and regretted it. It takes so much time to make it look good, I ended up wearing it as a quiff for years, took two years to grow it out completely. I think if you look good with a fringe, you never change, if you have spent a long time without one, chances are, you're going to regret it later.

I'm definitely not a candidate for bangs. My forehead isn't that big, and I have a more prominent jaw. With bangs, I'd look like a cavewoman. But I live vicariously through the women who can rock 'em.

Becky said...

Hi! I've had them for a long time now- I do not have the Zooey Deschanel or the supermodel bang. Mine is more of a swept to the side bang that can be wore straight across as well. I love them and think they are flattering on all. Worst case scenario- you grow them out or pull them back! I say go for it.

I've always loved bangs- any type really. Thick, wispy, side swept- but I have naturally wavy hair which tends to frizz easily and they are very high maintenance, especially in the NY humid summer. Such a bummer though because I always want them!

katie said...

I have always wanted bangs! But every time I talk to trusted stylists, they tell me not to cut them because they wouldn't suit me. I usually listen to them, but one time I decided that I was going to do it anyway. Well, I have short hair and a round face, and I just ended up looking like the Campbell's soup kids. I still think about it all the time, though, and wonder if the next time, it will be different.

I had bangs when I was little, but I'm not sure I could pull them off again. Actually, Miss Oklahoma (Which is where I live. She went to my high school and college first semester! Small world!)rocked the bangs, which I thought was awesome! Made her really stand out, which is a good thing, as she made it to top ten!

We always want what we can't have. I have bangs - I have to - my forehead is too large and my head is too round not to! I grew them out once and it was a mistake. I often wish I didn't have them, though, especially when I'm wearing hats (winter hats, baseball hats - all do really bad things to bangs).

rebecca said...

and then when you decide you don't want them anymore..... oy vey.

Delphine said...

ha ha, to me bangs are the hair equivalent of comfort food: they shield your face from the outside world, and make you look instantly stylish and cool, like you've made that extra effort vs a 'regular' haircut
so I go constantly back and forth between giving in to the desire for bangs, and growing them out because i find them a bit easy and obvious (I always have them cut almost eyelash grazing, this way it only takes a couple months for them to be long enough to blend into the rest of my hair - very versatile!). Right now I am in a 'no-bangs' phase, with a very simple shoulder-lenght bob, but I will probably get bangs again next time I feel a bit down and tired and in need of an easy pick-me-up!
and if you want some, just go for it! if you don't like them they will be gone in 3 months! as my mom always says, it's just hair, it will grow back!

sip-n-wear said...

bangs are super cute, esp when they're thick and a little longer... but it's a pain in the booty to maintain! and the 'growing it out' period sucks...! so no bangs for me for a while...

Briel said...

I've had bangs before but they are grown out now. Of course now that I don't have them I'm thinking of getting them again. That's always the way of it! The growing out part sucks and I'm usually like "never again!" and then time passes and I start thinking I want bangs again! haha :)

I used to have bangs up until high school when I grew them out. I find it much easier to not have bangs. I always wanted them to look perfect but they'd separate, drive me crazy, sit the wrong way, and make my forehead break out sometimes lol. I'd also get annoyed having to clip them back whenever I wash my face. Trimming them is a pain too.

I've had bangs for years but I remember in the beginning - maybe the first 6 months to a year(!) it took some figuring out.
Here's what I have to do with them after I shower - blow dry them (with the rest of my hair) and if they still need taming, pull a cotton headband down over them for 1/2 an hour or so to put them in the straight mood. Easy peasy.

That's funny, 2012 is the year I finally finished growing out my bangs of 4-5 years! I have to say, it's not true bangs wouldn't suit you. It's probably easier for people with high/wide foreheads to wear them, but if you cut them just a bit higher on the head like Zooey Deschanels (like I used to have), or cut a few side pieces, they should suit you perfectly. (Go for it!) Now that my bangs are completely grown out, I'm tempted to cut them a bit like Alexa Chung... Ahh, hair decisions!

I have bangs! actually i always had side swept bangs then last year I decided to go for the blunt bangs...I love them but they are not for those you who don't keep up with maintenance. My hair grows quick so I have to go get them trimmed at least every other month (if I don't min them getting to shaggy). Luckily Arrojo does free bang trims so I can go there without having to spend money plus it allows me to stay in contact with my hair dresser lol.

I've had bangs for years and I disagree with people who say they are high maintenance! They are just slliiiightly more maintenance. They tend to get dirty more quickly than the rest of your hair, which is easily solved by just washing them over the bathroom sink and blowdrying for a minute.

I have a side-swept one right now (my hair just never recovered it's thickness after giving birth so goodbye to the blunt bangs) and it's great. :)

But I do think they look lovely on some people and people like Zoey make me try and rock them a bit better.

I have had bangs my entire life. Really. One summer I tried to get rid of them and swore it made me feel dizzy not seeing them in my line of vision. As someone who gets bored with her hair VERY easily, bangs have been my savior. I am growing out a pixie and am almost to an even chin-length bob stage. The bangs get pinned up, swept to the side, and worn blunt across and I love them. My hair never has to look the same and that suits me perfectly. I was a blunt-cut bang-hater until I got the itch to do them myself.

I can't handle bangs. I have gotten bangs several times, always forgetting that they look fine until there is more than 50% humidity in the air and then I look awful. I look fine in bangs December - February and like a train wreck the rest of the year!

I love bangs on a lot of other people. Unfortunately, I just can't do bangs. I tried maybe 5 years back, despite knowing they wouldn't work, and then lived with 8 months or so of tucking my hair back with bobby pins.

First, they just don't work with curly hair. I have fine curly hair which for the most part can easily be straightened, but for some reason the "bangs area" is the most curly, with actual kinky curls which can't be fully-straightened. They will never lie flat. (This was the area that first started going curly when I was a straight-haired little girl.)

Second, I seem to have an unusually small forehead, so it just looks bad. And there's something about my profile which makes having hair over what tiny forehead I do have look unflattering. Alas.

Total love/hate relationship with bangs!

I got them cut in a couple of years ago; I wasn't convinced - the continuous maintenance to make them look right, the constant temptation to trim them myself (dangerous, once done, NEVER again!, but my boyfriend (now husband) thought they were great, and I did like how they looked too, so I kept them for a couple of years.

But when it came time to get married, I decided to grow them out, and now I've stuck for the non-bangs look. Just much easier and more versatile... but I do miss the dramatic, edgy look that goes with having bangs!

BTW, where I am from (New Zealand), we don't refer to them as bangs, but as a fringe. Bangs is so infinitely cooler!

I love how heavy bangs look on some people, but I just don't have the right hair for bangs. For years and years I would go through the cycle of getting them and then immediately starting to grow them out again. Now whenever I tell my sister I'm going for a haircut it's her job to remind me, "NO BANGS!"

As a teenager I'd cut my own fringe - I loved it and it looked great (even now as I look back at photos I think that - perhaps the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia influence that somewhat?!).

Now in my mid-twenties I expected the same thing would work and cut my shoulder-length hair short and added a blunt fringe - big mistake! My fringe failed at turning back the clock, and sadly what suits me now reveals my ever-increasing forehead wrinkles too! Ha ha ha!

I grew out my bangs about 3 years ago, and constantly reconsider getting them again. There are a few things that stop me: bad bang days where they just will not cooperate, whenever I worked out I would need few bobbypins around, and sticky hot east coast summers where it feels like your bangs are just sticking to your forehead. Nonetheless, they're still super cute... so it's always something to consider.

It really depends on your face shape and how high your forehead is. I grew up with bangs and had them into my 20s, and I will never cut them again--cute as they look on other people, they do not work on me! I usually thought they looked fine in the mirror, but photos set me straight.

I have to have bangs. I pretty much have a five-head. I tried the sideways bangs for a while in college...bad decision. I would look ridiculous with no bangs and my hair tied back in a ponytail. Luckily my hair stylist is cool and will let me come in between haircuts to trim my bangs for free (my bangs grow like weeds). The only annoying thing about having bangs is when you work out or it's really hot and you sweat then they stick to your forehead. Otherwise I love them! But I must say I'm jealous of all the ladies out there that have the no-bangs option.

I got bangs in the beginning of 2007. It was the spring semester of my senior year of college, I had just ended a sort of rough period in my life, and I was ready for a change. I was really nervous- so nervous that I closed my eyes when the stylist cut them! But I'll never forget what happened when I opened them, both my mouth and the hairdresser's mouth dropped and we said in unison, "Oh my God!" I don't think either of us expected them to look that good.

Flash forward a month or two later- I'm nearing graduation and I meet a guy at a bar near campus. I don't think much of the casual interaction until friends start coming up to me saying "So and so calls you bangs girl, he likes your bangs!" It was so funny, I never thought anyone would like me specifically for my hair. That casual interaction grew to a friendship, flirting, and then a relationship. At the time I had set plans to move to NYC with my best girlfriends (a plan that had been set in stone for a year), but within a few short weeks all of that changed and I up and moved to DC with the boyfriend I acquired because of my bangs! I think it was a good choice, as five years later we're still going strong (though thankfully now living in NYC). But my friends often joke that they don't know anyone whose entire life changed largely because of a haircut. I'm sure it wasn't all the haircut, but it's still a fun story :). And for that reason, I think I will forever have bangs!

I haven't had bangs since I was 6 years old with a short bob and bangs. Yesterday I was just talking to my friend about wanting to cut some bangs for myself. I cut my own hair and it's hard to keep from experimenting with something drastic and crazy.

However, my face is pretty round, and my husband said I would just look like a lollipop with bangs if I got them.

Anyway, I caved and gave myself long bangs that can be pushed away as side bangs... but I'm tempted to make the full leap and trim them an inch more for real bangs.

have you ever done the "see-if-you-look-good-with-bangs" trick? you basically bobby pin your hair to give yourself faux bangs so you can get a feel for whether or not your can pull 'em off. here's what i mean: http://www.blendingbeautiful.com/want-to-see-how-youd-look-with-bangs-try-this-fun-trick/

I have a love hate relationship with bangs. I always LOVE them on other people. What kills me about them is they are work. Every morning I feel like I'm spending ten minutes with them to just look normal and not every which way ;)

I cut my bangs for the first time since I was 4 about 6 months ago and they were cute for 10 minutes until I washed my hair and had to style them again. I'm telling you... TOTALLY not worth the time. So cute but such a pain. My bangs still aren't long enough to put behind my ear and it drives me nuts every single day.

I feel the same way: forever torn. As soon as I get them I want to grow them out, which is almost impossible... but then as soon as I do, I want them back! I just posted about it on my own blog not long ago:

I'm so much cuter with bangs, but humidity doesn't agree so I'm growing them out. What a pain!

I couldn't do blunt bangs but I love how having piecey, sideswept bangs softens my face. When I grow them out and pull them backward, the look just seems too severe for me.

This post just reminded me I need a bangs trim, too! :)

I was just back in NYC visiting my gal Amanda at Arrojo and she gave me one wicked pair of bangs and a super short do. I felt cool for about 24 hours but upon arriving back to LA and attempting to do my hair myself I just about had a nervous breakdown/cursed myself for getting them. HOWEVER! 1 1/2 weeks later (and some trial and error) I'm in love. It's totally changed my style - actually they gave me style. My hair is now my best accessory to any outfit. Don't be scared...just go for it!

i love bangs because even when you wear a basic ponytail, it looks a little more "done". BUT at the same time they are a lot of work to keep up. My boyfriend hates bangs, so I haven't gotten them yet.. maybe in the fall though! :)

You would look good in bangs because you are thin and have a slim face. You should go for it if you want!! I can only do side swept bangs, but if I lose 15 more pounds I will go for the Zooey look!

I have a fivehead rather than a forehead, so I have had bangs for almost all of my life. I hate that my face shape limits me to needing them, but they do work with lots of lengths and styles. I've had long hair, medium hair and now I have a pixi with long bangs. And they can really draw attention to they eyes, which is always nice.

I recently got bangs at my husbands suggestion. I love them. They started out longer and side swept. Now they are thick and straight across my forehead (right above my eyelashes!

Gah, I've wanted bangs forever, but I have a cowlick RIGHT in the middle of the front of my head, which forces my hair to always part down the middle. Every hairdresser I've ever talked to has pretty much flat out refused to cut bangs, because they know it won't end well. Boo.

Melissa said...

I've been rocking the full bangs for 6 years now. And I'm 24, and it definitely doesn't look childish. Thankfully I have hair that bangs just sort of work on, I guess like Zooey's. I don't have to blow dry them or style or anything, they just kind of know where to go. It's only hair! So if anyone was doubting them, just go for it! It grows back, though it might take a while.

I love my bangs! They make my face look so much better, haha. Speaking of which, they need a trim. See ya!

I've had bangs on and off for years, and recently decided to grow them out. While I think they look lovely, there's no denying the fact that I feel more awake, with it, and-honestly- more gown up without them. Who know, I'll probably decide to cut them again in a couple of years, but right now I'm enjoying seeing the world free and clear.

I actually just wrote a post this week sharing tips on how to grow them out, so i guess 2012 is NOT the year for bangs on ME. Which isn't to say they wouldn't look great on you :)

I had a fringe - or 'bangs' - when I went to university, I loved them! It was such a change I felt I could finally be myself! Then I realize what a pain they are to keep up (trimming every 2 weeks!!) that I grew them out. Now I miss them and will probably get them after my wedding :)

I briefly considered them (always had them as a child, thanks mom), but my hair stylist astutely pointed out that I wear glasses almost every day, and bangs dusting the tops of glasses is just NOT a good look. Especially if you have a round face like me and are trying to do longer, sideswept bangs. where does the hair go, around the glasses? So I will continue to show off my (pretty nice, a little freckly) forehead.

mostly have always had bangs. i went a year or so without and realized in photos that there was just too much face! they're tricky b/c if you want them to behave you have to train them and they can definitely be a maintenance issue.

i always desperately WANT to love bangs, but i don't think i can handle the maintenance level! my hair is thin and they always end up just stringy and hanging in my eyes. it's best if i avoid them...though my sister once got removable bang extensions and they looked GREAT. she just bought them and then went to a stylist to have her trim them to a good length, and then she could take them out whenever she wanted. i support you trying this.

Megan said...

Ooh, I think bangs would look great on you. I tried them once a couple years ago, knowing it would be difficult with two cowlicks in the front. Cowlicks + humidity meant more styling than I cared for. Not the best on me -- but I do like 'em on other women!

From the NYTimes Article:
“If you wear your hair naturally curly, I’m not a big fan of bangs...There’s nothing worse than someone with a full head of curl and these straight bangs. It just looks ridiculous.”
Ouch! I totally have the curly hair, straight, side swept bangs look and have for years. (THEY COVER MY GIANT FOREHEAD!) Then I noticed Zooey's hair is just as curly as mine with straight bangs and decided Johnny Lavoy is out of his mind.

Audrey Camille said...

I think you would look great with side bangs, Joanna! I used to have straight bangs and I just found the upkeep was too much...it seemed like every two weeks they were getting too long. I've had bangs in some form for seven years now, and I can't really imagine myself without them now. I don't like to color my hair, so they give me a little style without being too boring.

Luella said...

I did, and it was a don't, but I think it's a very cute do (for most people).

I took the plunge and liked them while I was living in Europe last fall... then I came back to the midwest to find my bangs to be a ball of fuzz while I have super frizzy hair (ala Monica on Friends when they go to Barbados...) So I had to nix them. In humid, extremely hot areas, I can't. Walking to class on campus with sweaty bangs is THE WORST.

But if I had perfect hair, rather than this puff of fluff, I'd so rock them.

They make you feel so confident and sexy! Well, if you aren't me in Kansas... ; )

I can never really get bangs to work out for me (because of my super curly hair, they take a lot of work), but I cut them about once a year anyway. I can't help it! Every time I see a picture of Zooey I just fall in love and make an appointment at the salon. Sigh...

I am torn between bangs or no bangs and I have a haircut tomorrow-eek! Thing is, if i cut bangs i will be panicked about doing them every day (i have 2 major cowlicks right in front:S) and if i don't i 'll be disappointed for not being more brave...and so the great hair battle rages on...:)

I had straight bangs with long hair, and I enjoyed the retro and feminine look. But now everyone has bangs and long hair! So I'm doing side-swept bangs with short hair. I still love the look, though.

I think they can work really well on some people if they have the right face shape, but for most others, it just makes grown women look like they are trying to look like little girls.

Also, I don't feel like 2012 was a big year for bangs? I remember everyone was into them and cutting them back when I was in college 2-3 years ago, and now it seems like everyone is growing them out? Maybe I'm wrong? Maybe my friends are out of it? lol

I love bangs, and have cut mine short two times in the past two years. That said, I HATE growing out bangs. There are so many awkward, hair-in-your-face phases to go through. Hi Jo, have you got a good hairdresser, she should be able to talk you through what bangs would suit you. For example I can't have bangs straight across because my hair grows in such a way that part of it will always go to the side, so I keep mine as long side bangs, which makes me feel more comfortable than none at all.

I really love your long hair and think you look great without bangs anyway :) X

My former bangs and I had such a tumultuous love/hate relationship. For every "good" bang day, I had 5 bad bang days. The only thing worse than a bad bang day is a bad growing-out-bangs day. But, of course, Zooey looks amazing with bangs. She was probably born with bangs.

I had bangs, thick and Zooey-esque, from the time I was 15 until just after my 20th birthday. About a year ago, when I began growing them out and chopped off over a foot of hair! I felt like they would look strange with short hair and I wanted a new look. However, I'm always getting bang envy and have come close to going back multiple times. I loved them and I miss them but I like being bang-free for now. I love the ability that bangs have to add style without having to actually do anything to your hair.

Ugh my love/hate relationship with bangs...
It all started when I saw a magazine cover of Naomi Campbell with bangs and long sexy hair when I was a teenager in the late 90s. So i copied the look and LOVED them! Wore it that way for awhile till I got sick of it but it was a pain in the butt to grow them back.
Fast forward to three years ago. I cut them, HATED them and grew them back out. They were longer so it was easy to hide them. I vowed never to cut bangs ever again.. Until I did earlier this year in February. This time it wasn't so easy to hide as it was cut to a point where I had to commit to the look. I hate my bangs with a passion and now I'm at the odd mid length stage where I can't hide it or wear it as bangs. Grrrrrrr!

Kim-Ella said...

You know...

I had bangs about 6 years ago and it was awful. Yes, my hair is fine and straight- so it should have been perfect. And yes, I have an oval shaped face. All the right elements for a fringe. But I ended up looking like an 8 year old kid with straggly (and sometimes greasy) bangs. Gah! Took like a year to grow out enough that I could live with them.

Some how, my (former) hairdresser this year convinced me that bangs would be hot. She was right. Except the sweat I have pouring out from underneath them this summer is not.

I don't know, some people love them on me, some people hate them, but in the end, I can't deal with plastered greasy hair on my forehead, no matter how "young" and "fresh" they make me look.

Bangs in the fall? Sure, why not? Summer time + bangs = Hot Forehead Mess!

Everyone should try bangs at least once! I always get so annoyed with them and grow them out, but I miss how they frame my face!
