Usually I'm not a huge fan of "what men want" articles, since they make men seem like scary mysterious creatures, instead of just the nerds they are:) But I was reading a Glamour story, and this answer surprised me: Can you guess what guys secretly hope girls will wear to bed? Answer below...
Night shirts! One guy explained it like this: "I think it was Mystic Pizza where Julia Roberts was hanging out at that guy's house wearing one of his button-down shirts and no pants. More women need to do that." -- Jack, 35So, there you go. What do you wear to bed? I'm usually in pajamas with hiking socks.
(Photos from Esquire)

One of my boyfriends thought the most intriguing thing for me to sleep in is a well-worn, cotton tee shirt. Thing is, I'm tall, so a mens button down fits, it doesn't look like a shirt-dress on me...
ReplyDeleteHaha so simple! But I think it's true. There's something sexy about a girl wearing one of those shirts!!
ReplyDeletehttp://olgasrecord.blogspot.com/
My husband loves this, too! I have a lavender gingham hand me down of his that is his favorite.
ReplyDeletehahah i love that you wear hiking socks to bed. cute
ReplyDeleteI usually wear a tshirt and undies or just undies. I love the mystic pizza reference!
ReplyDeleteI usually end up in vintage slips or nightgowns - this seems ridiculously cozy!
ReplyDeleteI have owl pajamas, next I want striped Hanna Andersson jams :) Socks are a must! xx
ReplyDeleteat the minute i'm wearing huge mens shirts and a rather unattractive body tubi-grip over my near 8 month baby bump! What a site!x
ReplyDeletehahaha hiking socks ;) i remember that. and its closer to my apparel at night than sexy lingerie.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping it would just be a t-shirt and shorts! I find lace to be itchy and silk makes me cold!

I feel very sexy in just an oversize shirt and panties, I can imagine men liking it too.

♥
warmer nights: tank top + undies.
ReplyDeletecooler nights: tank top + undies + socks
I love Mystic Pizza and I kind of agree, men's shirt with nothing else is sexy. I sleep in my husband's 8 year old t shirts, so thin and soft.
ReplyDeleteHmm interesting little fact! I am usually in boy shorts and a tank in the summer and all bundled up in the winter. Hubby hates winter.. haha!
ReplyDeletewww.rachaelkhawkins.blogspot.com
Uncomfortable I'd imagine, I'm with you and usually snuggle up in jammies and wooly socks
ReplyDeleteNothing!
ReplyDeleteMy guy wouldn't be too pleased if I wore one of his nice shirts to bed... lol. He washes & irons them himself :)
ReplyDeleteI wear nothing to bed... it's most comfortable for me!
I think Julia Roberts wears that in Notting Hill, too, when she opens the door and the press is all outside.
ReplyDeleteI have to have pants or shorts on when I sleep - I can't fall asleep without something on top and on bottom! Weekend naps are a different story, though!
We have a puppy with a very cold nose who sleeps with us, so I'm usually in leggings / yoga pants and a tee or tank. But when there's no pup - nothing but a tee and panties for me! It's comfortable and my boyfriend loves it!
ReplyDeletethat would be so uncomfortable! I can't do sleeves in bed! I used to wear just a top and undies but then I got into emergency preparedness. The thought of me running out of the house like that didn't bode well. So now it's boy shorts and a cami :)
ReplyDeleteAngry Asian, haha, so funny, you always make me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeletesara, SO sweet that you sleep with a puppy!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what it is about wearing guys' shirts that is so appealing as sleepwear, but both my husband and I love it too. He has a thin, well-worn The Who t-shirt that I wear constantly, and when I went to Europe for a semester (when we were engaged) he gave me his Johnny Cash tshirt as a keepsake since he couldn't come with. :)
ReplyDeleteI sleep in the nude, it's the most comfortable :)... unless I feel sick, then I sleep in cotton pyjamas.
ReplyDeletei could never sleep naked for some reason, i always wake up in the night thinking, omg i have no clothes on!
ReplyDeletei like night shirts-i think they are sexy and I feel sexy wearing one.
ReplyDeleteI would wear anything (or nothing at all) if it meant waking up to that image of Don Draper smoking, making me breakfast.
ReplyDeleteYES. JUST YES. I wish!!!!
DeleteMy husband likes when I wear a well worn cotton t-shirt and nothing else. Thats usually what I wear but sometimes its nice to wear pants too
ReplyDeleteThats actually what I prefer to wear to bed, but my boyfriend HATES it! My favorite one is plaid and he calls it my lumberjack shirt. He's such a brat =)
ReplyDeleteI mostly go with J Crew tank tops and boxers, but I also have the rattiest t-shirt in the world - from a field hockey tournament I played in in 1995, so thin it is almost see through, full of random holes, and missing the band around the neck b/c it ripped off a couple years ago - that I ADORE sleeping in. It is the softest, most comfortable thing in the world, and, as long as I wear only panties with it, my husband loves it as much as I do. Go figure! I guess it's just one of the reasons we're so perfect for each other! :)
ReplyDeleteWe actually prefer that old baggy corporate team-building t-shirt she got from her old office.
ReplyDeleteTeam Building Exercise '99!
And maybe some business socks.
i love to wear leggings and a guys shirt in bed ... they are just so comfortable for sleeping :)
ReplyDeletexoxo birdyblue ( peppermintblue )
I think my husband's fantasy of what I'd wear to bed is a t-shirt with he neck cut out so it falls off my shoulders, a la flashdance, and some little shorts. Seems like it'd be an easy one to give him, but the idea of sleeping in shorts only appeals to me on squelching hot summer nights. So my best sleeping outfit is a compromise of silk pajamas, feels good for both of us! Recently even did a post on different options:
ReplyDeletehttp://nomadic-d.blogspot.com.es/2012/04/sleep-silk.html
I LOVE that pic of John Hamm.
ReplyDeletemy boyfriend always wants me to wear his button-downs, but considering he's a rather slim dude, and likes his shirts to fit slim, it wouldn't exactly be as sexy of a sight as he thinks it would be! haha so... i wear a mid-thigh length cotton dress that's now my "night gown" and he seems pretty satisfied :P
ReplyDeleteLove love love your blog!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from norway:):)
Lise
I hate having anything on my legs when I sleep so it's usually a sleep bra and panties, a vest and panties, or in really cold weather a hoodie and panties... and a hot water bottle. My legs just feel strangled otherwise.
ReplyDeletefirst of all, thanks for the uber sexy John Hamm pic:) i wear reeeallally sexy old navy pj pants (my fave were a pair i took with me to the hospital when i had 2 of my 3 kids!) with a shelf bra cami. nice huh??!
ReplyDeleteNaked of course! Even in winter--makes for better cuddling.
ReplyDeleteWell, who would've guessed huh? LOL. That is so sweet of men. Only problem is my fiance is quite strict about his shirts. He can wear my socks, but I can't wear his shirts?!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll just have to buy my own shirt from the men's section + tell him another guy gave it to me. Haha.
I'm with Jennifer--thanks for the John Hamm pic! I'm usually in nighties/chemises because I move around so much that I hate having on shorts/pants because the waistband gets all twisted!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I don't really like sleeping in the nude, either. I think it's partially because I think "what if there's a fire?!" Totally irrational, but I think that weird thought it what keeps me from sleeping comfortably naked.
Meredith, you are so right! Fire, Police, Ambulance, any natural disaster really.
ReplyDeleteHeck, I'd buy that shirt straight off Jon Hamm's back for my bed routine.
i second the comment about him NOT LIKING me wearing his clothes to bed. i tried this a few times -- the response is usually, "hey i wear that, you know," or "that's mine." he prefers "just panties." but IRL, i wear whatever i want.

ReplyDeletethat's my favorite thing to wear too! but I'm with Katie...I'm tall so I have to go with a big size if I don't want it to fit like a normal shirt...
ReplyDeleteand I had just used that pic on my blog too :)
http://anna-gemutlichkeit.blogspot.com/
that comic you posted in the "socks in bed" post is ME. IDENTICAL. i sent it my boyfriend and he said the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThat's really funny b/c I usually sleep in one of my boyfriends old button downs but there are only a couple that I like b/c some are too starchy and not cozy. If we've come home late from a bit of a boozer though sometimes I'll just strip and sleep naked! hehe!
ReplyDeleteUsually nothing more than my underwear. I feel claustrophobic in anything more unless it is FREEZING.
ReplyDeleteJimmy wins the comment thread.
ReplyDeleteIt's always more sexy when a girl wears a shirt to bed. It adds to some of the mystique!
ReplyDeleteI just think of a button down shirt as... not comfortable! Plus, now that I am in my 3rd tri of pregnancy I think i would pop the buttons! hahah! I have heard that this is considered super sexy tho... I love the photos you chose, as always!

ReplyDeletesummer...T-shirt
This is what men want you to wear ALL THE TIME.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Ha.... hiking socks. That sounds sort of like me. I love wearing one of my husband's old t-shirts. They are very soft and cover just enough. :-) Besides... it's cold in our bedroom... he likes it cold as a cave and a girl needs to keep the goose bumps away somehow.
ReplyDeleteI think this one makes sense! Nightgowns can be a little old ladyish, but this gives a similar feminine vibe
ReplyDeletein dramatic fashion
i'm gonna go ahead and say that i think most men prefer that we wear NOTHING to bed. i know my husband does ;) and really, i'm most comfortable that way. nothing to bunch up or make me too hot!
ReplyDeleteSO TRUE! Before I even read the full article I guessed right. My husband loves it when I wear one of his old shirts to bed, haha. In fact, I bought lingerie ONCE because I thought he would like it and it was oh-so-pretty but I blatantly wrong. He even told me he way prefers the old shirt. Funny, huh?!
ReplyDelete.. totally can relate ... MUST WEAR SOCKS ALWAYS, they can come off in middle of night, but must start .. cannot wear any bottoms at all, so need something that covers in case of house emergency, I totall get that too .. XO
ReplyDelete.. p.s. Isn't that Don making breakfast ... too cool of you.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteYes! I discovered this a couple months ago when I bought a couple nightshirts from JCrew. My boyfriend's jaw dropped when I changed into the shirt & entered the kitchen to make some tea -- I couldn't believe his reaction. Sexy bedtime stuff is soooo uncomfortable, so I've been thrilled to find something understated yet attractive to sleep (and lounge in).
ReplyDelete(http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sleepwear/PRDOVR~33271/33271.jsp)
This is what I wear almost every night. I should be having more sex. Must speak to husband about this. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm usually boxer shorts and a tank top, though I have been known to wear nightgowns during the summer.
ReplyDeleteA video to make you all laugh and to back up Alexandra's vote for Jimmy as the winner of the comments thread! Team Building Exercise 99!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqZcYPEszN8
HA! I LOVE Emily's comment!!! lol
ReplyDeleteI wear those cute American Apperal undies... they literally look like little boy undies. and a cozy tee!
there ya have it!
xo's, vanessa
Who knew it could be this simple?
ReplyDeletenight shirts are very sexy. i usually opt for the pajamas and socks. must have pants tucked into socks. Sexy.
ReplyDeletenight shirts are very sexy. i usually opt for the pajamas and socks. must have pants tucked into socks. Sexy.
ReplyDeleteIt totally depends on the weather, but one of my usuals is a night shirt that is super soft, otherwise I will wear PJ shorts and tank. If it is the winter, then bring on the sweat pants because it is cold in MN and I do not care what anyone says!
ReplyDeleteMuch love,
B
What a relief because some of the lingerie out there looks absolutely painful! I'm usually buttoned up in my thermal leggings and henley!
ReplyDeleteAlways love a comfy shirt!!
ReplyDeleteI like to mix things up and keep it interesting! A good life motto in general :) On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, have you guys watched this video? It is SO so sweet and funny - http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2012/05/what-are-your-5-tips-for-a-happy-marriage.html
ReplyDeleteI love nightshirts, but tend to be waaay unsexy in sweatpants and sometimes even a hoodie. Nothing says "come hither" like lots and lots of layers... ;)
ReplyDeleteoisforotto.blogspot.com
Panties and a tank or sweats and a tee, depending on the weather. Every once in a while a silk nightie.
ReplyDeleteI usually just wear a t-shirt, underwear and socks. I never used to wear socks, but my feet have been getting cold lately!
ReplyDeletep.s. THANK YOU for the Jon Hamm pic....have you been watching this season? Isn't it great!! :)
I like to collect t-shirts that they give out when you work at an event or volunteer for some charity function. It makes me feel like I do stuff that's important lol. So i like to wear those to sleep with my sexy flannel pyjama pants that evoke sarcastic comments from my fiance such as "I didn't know it was Christmas".
ReplyDeletesoudavones.blogspot.com
that picture of John Hamm.... mmmm.
ReplyDeleteOh man, John Hamm...yummmmm. And yes, the men's button down to bed works like a charm. :) haha!
ReplyDeleteSleeping in the nude is the best! And I used to hate sleeping with no clothes on...
ReplyDeleteOn an unrelated note, I still don't get the whole Don Draper thing. I had never watched Mad Men until a couple of weeks ago, but I knew what the characters looked like--but not their names! So when I found out which one was Don Draper, I though, "Roger Sterling is where it's at!" I thought all you ladies were talking about that silver fox.
This just brought back a rather happy & naughty college memory for me... ;) so thank you, and I know for a fact that you're right!
ReplyDeleteI love night sirts!
ReplyDeleteTank and panties for me. That's my hubby's favorite. Now if he found me wearing a button down and nothing else while, I don't know, cooking or something- I'm sure he would find that sexy, too. I used to wear my dad's old button ups as smocks in art class so that kinda whacks the sexy out of it for me!
ReplyDeleteHa, that's what I wear to bed every night! Too bad I'm single.
ReplyDeleteHa, that's what I wear to bed every night! Too bad I'm single.
ReplyDeleteum, omg that pic of don draper !!
ReplyDeleteSo funny about the socks! I, too, wear my thick wool hiking sock to bed, often with just undies. My husband pokes fun at me for it but it keep my toes so warm!
ReplyDelete1. I would wear whatever Don Draper tells me to wear.
ReplyDelete2. I slept in a oversized button-up the other night and my husband thought it was weird.
tank top and undies. my husband always tries to get me to sleep without a top, but i sleep miserably if i do! my arms seem to stick to my chest and stomach and feel stuck. i don't know how to describe it well, but it just doesn't work. unlike you, i absolutely cannot sleep with socks. funny how everyone has a strong preference one way or the other, huh?
ReplyDeleteOoh, this is so interesting! I will keep it in mind!

{BESO HANDBAGS GIVEAWAY ON MY BLOG!}
I like the idea of the night shirt, but I'm not sure about the buttons! I'm usually a tank and undies gal...
ReplyDeleteAs to sleeping naked... I tried it once during high school about a decade ago after reading in some magazine like Seventeen or Glamour that it boosted body confidence. (I now own and love my flat chest, but back then I was bummed about it!) A few hours into the night I started walking in my sleep, turning the lights on and off in my room while carrying my pillow. Fortunately, it was my mom who came to check and see what the commotion was all about, not my dad! Not surprisingly, I have been too scared to try sleeping naked again!
oh yeah, women in men's shirts, i used to find that uber sexy too once-upon-a-time ... forgot about it ever since i started living with my hubby who has mostly tshirts in his wardrobe. i'm usually just wearing them most of the time, day or night. otherwise i sleep in my tshirt and sweatpants.
ReplyDeleteI'm staying at the boyfriend's house tonight and forgot to pack my usual tank (with undies). maybe i'll have to slip into one of his flannels
ReplyDeleteAmen @ the roger sterling comment.... HE does it for me. When I'm home alone, I sleep nude. When I'm at the boyfriend's house, I wear one of his many oversized basketball jerseys [he's a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier than me so... they swamp me but he loves it.] His house is usually freezing so once I brought my footsie PJs and he was not pleased at all [still tried to jump my bones, though!] lol
ReplyDeletesometimes wear sexy underwear...but its not comfortable:D:D:D so usually as u, pijamas con socks:D thank you jo
ReplyDeleteNot surprised by that answer at all! It is totally sexy. My husband likes when I wear a white fitted T and an old pair of Hanes with seaming to look like mens boxer briefs. It's like glass doors on a shower stall. You get the idea but there's still some mystery...
ReplyDeleteloooooooove that pic. wouldn't that be something to wake up to?? ha!
ReplyDeleteas for sleepwear, I usually opt for a cotton nighty or tank/panties. but a men's worn-in shirt does sound like a good option...
Jon Hamm looks pretty darn sexy in that photo. I usually wear a t-shirt and to bed with socks. But sometimes I will sleep in the nude :)
ReplyDeleteI have a ton of different stuff. I have a bunch of worn out Ralph Lauren button downs that used to belong to one of my cousins that I found at my grandmother's beach house and they are huge on me so I wear those somtimes. I also wear a lot of tiny cotton nightgowns, but never jersey because I hate how it clings and stretches. If it is really cold I sleep in Hanna Anderson striped long john pants and a cashmere henley sweater (that is Marc Jacobs and should never have been used for this but on a cold night on a trip I wore it once and just haven't gone back) I sleep naked in the summer if it is really hot. I never sleep in underwear though.
ReplyDeleteIn summer I usually wear nothing or just underwear.
ReplyDeleteIn winter I sometimes add a tshirt and on the super cold nights a pair of stripey thigh high socks. Pants are just not an option, I always end up all tangled.
This post reminded me of a moment in last week's episode of Community where one character (Abed, pretending to be Troy) said "I like it when girls wear pyjamas to bed. I just want to know they're comfortable"
ReplyDeleteMade me smile :)
I usually like to wear an arsenal of clothing to bed because I get really cold, yes even in the summer. But usually I try to just wear undies and a tshirt...he seems to enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteI put on a button down shirt tonight. My fiance chuckled and asked what I was doing. I said, "Oh, I just put my PJs on." He smiled, blushed a little, and said, "Those aren't PJs; those are 'SexJs.'" Hahaha...guess I'll be wearing this to bed more often :)
ReplyDeleteI always slept in my boyfriends t-shirt and boxers when we first started dating because I didn't have anything else to sleep in when I stayed at his place. It took almost a year into living with each other to realized I hadn't slipped on one of his t-shirts to go to bed since we moved in together. It never crossed my mind to since I had my OWN clothes to sleep in. Its still something I have to remember to do from time to time. I love wearing my boyfriends clothes to bed and I think he loves me wearing them to bed too:)
ReplyDeletelove a classic men's shirt!
ReplyDeletecheck out a cup of jo on the gold hat.

the gold hat.
I wear comfortable sleep wear my favorite was my pair of pajamas. But I usually wear my husband t-shirt or cotton nighties with undies or cotton short.
ReplyDeleteA smile.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree that most guys find the shirt to bed preferable! And socks are a must for me every night-- except summertime!
ReplyDeleteNaked, always naked!
ReplyDeleteAs for fears of a midnight fire, I leave my "lounge around the house" clothes laying beside my bed just in case.
I usually end up in vintage slips or nightgowns
ReplyDeleteSecond Hand Vans
I was just staring at Jon Hamm for a verrrrry long time before I read on...... ;) I think it's true about the nightshirts! Men do find it sexy...
ReplyDelete@Jimmy LOL
ReplyDeleteI don't wear anything, I always sleep nude. This is because I toss and turn all night long and clothes trapped me. When I started my relationship with my husband he used to wear full pajamas, which I found strange! but soon got used to my way of sleeping and now both of us sleep nude.
ReplyDeleteHaha this is such a good answer! Definitely going to invest in some man shirts haha :o) xx
ReplyDeleteI love sleeping in boxer shorts the tight ones, or just little shorts and a vest top or a tshirt. In winter I love long loose trousers and a tee.
ReplyDeleteI just sleep in undies. The only problem is that sometimes there's a little too much "wake up in the middle of the night from roaming hands" going on, haha.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I knew it! Crisp white dress shirts on women look sexy in movies hahaha :). I'm hilariously frugal when it comes to sleeping attire: t-shirts and yoga pants that can't be worn in public anymore.

ReplyDeleteI'm with Laura! Don Draper making me eggs? Anything short of a furry costume :P
ReplyDeleteI honestly thought you were going to say naked. Every guy I've been with save one have preferred me that way. I sleep in the nude sometimes, but usually I just wear pajama bottoms and a tank around the house, and put the tank on the night stand when I go to bed.
Really interesting answers, everyone! :)
Saw this yesterday morning and cannot get the photo of Jon Hamm out of my head. I can't stand cigarettes, don't eat eggs, and am happily married... But, sheesh - somebody get me a fan! Haha! Thanks Joanna!!!
ReplyDeleteI am probably the most un-sexy person when I go to bed. I need a lot of layers and earplugs (city noises make sleep impossible for this small town gal).
ReplyDeleteAnd socks.
I have to wear socks to bed or else I can't sleep.
Oh dear...
http://unpublishedworksofme.blogspot.co.uk/
good to know, since I love wearing a man's shirt to sleep in. so comfy and hey who know...sexy!
ReplyDeleteUmmm hello, John--anything for you!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is stealing his sweatpants & t-shirts! Seriously...why do his clothes seem so much more comfy than my own??
I prefer being naked most of the time... I mean, I like wearing clothes too, but I will always prefer to sleep naked, and gladly walk around the apartment naked too. I think there's nothing more comfortable than newly washed clean sheets and comforter cover against bare skin.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly though, my partner thinks I look the sexiest when I actually wear SOMETHING (panties and a t-shirt, or what-have-you) because I'm naked so much of the time, it's less of a novelty. Who would have thought?!
Always naked , just like my husand.
ReplyDeleteVery funny. We're also surprised at how many sleep shirts we sell! And how many guys are buying them as gifts! But interestingly, as with some of the other comments, my man "thought" he was a t-shirt and boy short lover, until night after night, my cute nighties won him over! No going back.. says he!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriends pajama pants or boxers and a t-shirt. However, I do agree - the mans button down thing tends to look very sexy in a subtle way (everyone knows that subtly sexy is the best kind of sexy).
ReplyDeletenothing.
ReplyDeleteThat's really not surprising. And I like wearing over sized shirts to bed and if they smell like a guy, yeah, it makes it even better.
ReplyDeleteIf that's not an option, normally it's a pair of shorts and, again, an oversized shirt or a sweatshirt. Simple and easy and comfortable.
For me, I feel comfortable when my wife is wearing shorts and t-shirt.
ReplyDeleteA really big t-shirt and undies, soo cosy!!
