Wes Anderson movies

Our friends saw Wes Anderson's new movie Moonrise Kingdom this week and said it was wonderful. (It has also been getting rave reviews.) Have you seen it yet? But my favorite Wes Anderson film was...

...Hotel Chevalier, the 13-minute film that proceeded The Darjeeling Limited. Have you ever seen it? Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman reveal the heartbreak after a breakup, when you clearly still love each other and feel really intimate, but you know you can't be together. Don't you know that exact feeling? It felt so real. Also, it's set in Paris. (You can watch the film on iTunes.)

Which Wes Anderson movies do you love (or hate)?

P.S. Another romantic short film: God of Love.

Saw Moonrise yesterday! It was lovely and perfect.

I actually LOVED 'fantastic mr. fox' so much. I watched it 3 times in a week because I loved it so. But Hotel Chevalier is definitely one of my favorites. Then comes Darjeeling Limited.

i forgot that he did fantastic mr fox. i never saw it. i couldn't get through darjeeling limited, i thought it was so pretentious! but i know so many people who liked it. my other fave was Royal Tenenbaums. the dad reminded me a little of my dad. :)

I can't stand Rushmore! In fact, I fall asleep every time I try to watch it. So boring.

On a side note, I just watched a British movie called "Submarine," which had a very Wes Anderson feel to it. Pretty good movie.

Vanessa said...

His first film, Bottlerocket, has always been my favorite. I highly recommend it! Owen Wilson is brilliant in it as well. And Rushmore is a close second. I don't enjoy his later stuff as much.

HRH Susan said...

All of them! Wes Anderson is one of my faves. I don't know if i could pick a favorite. I ADORE all the stuff he and Owen Wilson wrote together, and all of his most recent stuff is a total heart splatter on a screen (that's when he takes what's inside my heart and shows it to me on a 30 foot screen). I think the scene in the Royal Tenenbaums of Richie in the Bathroom is one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever recorded.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom! My favorite is still The Life Aquatic. My fiance and I went to see it on the big screen last weekend at Museum of the Moving Image. It was even more wonderful than I remembered!

To me, nothing beats Rushmore. I fell in love with Jason Schwartzman in that movie and 14 years later he's still one of my favorite actors. Bummed Bored to Death got canned, but cannot wait to see Moonrise Kingdom!!

I am a total Wes Anderson nerd. I once hosted a Wes Anderson Mini-Film-Fest and Costume Party at my apartment. I refused entry to anyone who wasn't dressed as a character from an Anderson movie. I, of course, dressed as Max Fisher ;)
But my favorite one if The Darjeeling Limited. I have yet to see Moonrise Kingdom because I live in the middle of nowhere, but hopefully this weekend when I vist SF I'll sneak some time to go. So exciting!

Stacey said...

Definitely Rushmore, with Royal Tenenbaums a close second. Am so looking forward to Moonrise!

You are so right! And you definately should see Fantastic mr. Fox. I also loved Hotel Chevalier! Have you seen the series with Jason Schwartzman called "bored to death"? Great show!

My husband and I are also HUGE fans of Wes Anderson. We even named our son Max Fischer (actually Maximillian) because Rushmore is on the very top of our all time favorite movie lists. Bottle Rocket is a close second, but I do love all Wes Anderson films. Cannot wait to see Moonrise Kingdom - going on Friday!

Joanna, you haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox??! It's such an endearing and wonderfully clever movie, definitely did the book justice. I can never decide if it's my favourite or if The Royal Tenenbaums takes that prize.

Moonrise Kingdom isn't released in Canada until tomorrow, I've planned a date night around it. Ha!

i can't WAIT for moonrise kingdom, and loved hotel chevalier, too!
the only film i wasn't 100% behind was fantastic mr. fox - not sure if it was because i wasn't a devotee of the roald dahl story or if i just thought it was too precious?

Kylie said...

Oh you MUST see 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'! Even Toby. It's hilarious, cute and I think you would really love it. Perfect for all ages.

My favorite will always be Rushmore. It's hilarious, and has amazing montages. I wanted to be Max Fischer in high school! Or at least date him.

The Darjeeling Limited! I have never seen Hotel Chevalier though, seems like I should.

Natalie said...

I loved hotel chevalier too! And loved that it was kind of this little special secret thing on top of The Darjeeling Limited, which is also one of my favourite Wes Anderson movies.

However, despite what people say, I truly love Fantastic Mr. Fox. It is so sweet and charming. Granted I never read the Roald Dahl story, so I could see how so people felt like it didn't match up well enough.

Libby said...

Love Wes Anderson. My fave is Royal Tenenbaums, but Rushmore is a close 2nd. :)

I am also quite fond of Hotel Chevalier. Perhaps you meant to say that it *preceded* The Darjeeling Limited?

The only one that I can watch over and over again is The Royal Tenenbaums. It's one of my favorite movies ever. I really really didn't like it when I saw it in the theatre. But then I wanted to watch it again once it came out on dvd and it slowly became an absolute fave.

LIFE AQUATIC is my favorite! "Philip, dynamite!" I've never seen Darjeeling Limited. Just watched Hotel Chevalier. Thank you so much for posting about it! It was perfect.

The Royal Tenenbaums. love his style.

The music is always spot on in his movies. Rushmore is my favorite!

Camille said...

It's really difficult to pick a favourite, I guess it'd be a tie between The Royal Tenenbaums and Darjeeling Limited? Although Rushmore and Bottlerocket are really good too...

On a side note, I was following a South-Asian Literature class (I'm a literature major), and the professor used The Darjeeling Limited as an example of satire of the Orientalist vision of India that was predominent amongst westerners until recently, i.e. all the main characters expect to be automatically spiritually changed by India and stick with a 'Disneyland' vision of India until they are thrown off the train.

Loved hotel chevalier. I find myself listening to the song from it a lot.

SO excited to see it! Did you hear the interview on NPR's Fresh Air? It made me appreciate him and his works so much more. Also, I can't get enough Edward Norton or Bruce Willis in my life.

I love Darjeeling Limited, have fallen asleep twice to Life Aquatic, don't get Tenenbaums, and adored Mr. Fox. ("Cuss!")

I was just discussing this with my Husby after buying the Moonrise Kingdom soundtrack...

Life Aquatic is my fave... but I think my intense love for all things David Bowie really plays into this. All of the Portuguese Bowie covers are AMAZING! Plus, Steve-Z. Love it.

And I'm with you on Royal Tennenbaum... he reminds me of my dad for sure. That movie is a classic!

There is nothing more perfect than a Wes Anderson movie. Or perhaps there's nothing more perfect than Bill Murray in a Wes Anderson movie. Or maybe there's nothing more perfect than the soundtrack to a Wes Anderson movie. It's all just so damn good.

Lauren Bair said...

Can't wait to see this! I have to say, my first Wes Anderson love was Tenenbaums (cannot resist 70s tennis star Luke Wilson). And every time I see someone with a bright orange/red beanie, I say "Team Zissou" in my head. But Bottle Rocket is my favorite. A totally awkward, charming story with love in it.

Megan said...

kind of love wes anderson films to a borderline obsession level. i think i'd have to go with royal tenenbaums as my number one, but i love them all so much that it only wins by a hair. and i definitely want to jump in on the "you must see fantastic mr. fox" bandwagon! i really think you and the whole fam would absolutely adore it. and side note, it has an amazing soundtrack (well all his films do really)--beach boys!

Royal Tenenbaums all the way. One of these days I'm going to wallpaper my bedroom in that rad red with zebras print. The NYC that Anderson created in that movie is still the one that I like to keep in my head. Now I just supplement it with the NY I see through your blog :)

I'd have to say Rushmore is pretty close to perfection in my book! It's so fresh and kind of started the indie quirky move movement. Bill Murray is perfect and Jason Shartzman is amazing!!!

jessamine said...

So strange you brought up that short film with Natalie portman. It has been on my mind all week. I love it. The first time I ever saw it I was pretty much going through the exact same sort of romance as the characters, and it hit so deep. Then "play with fire" by the stones became my obsession/anthem (played later in Darjeeling).

Jenni Austria Germany said...

i do love Hotel Chevalier but Darjeeling Limited is my true fave (even though i guess you could argue they are more or less one and the same). i know the hipsterest of hipsters scoff at DJ (and prefer his earlier work, i.e. Bottlerock) but i just love that Whitman family. although i do love Rushmore.... perhaps i can't decide after all.

Caitlin said...

Rushmore has to be my all-time favorite, but Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox are all pretty wonderful too.

Also, I seriously watched the trailer for Darjeeling Limited several times a week before it came out, but was so disappointed with the actual film. The same goes for The Life Aquatic. Here's hoping Moonrise Kingdom won't let me down!

One thing I have to say about all of them, even the ones I didn't like as much, is that the soundtracks are incredible! Have you seen this article about how he soundtracks his movies? It's pretty interesting:

http://www.npr.org/2012/05/24/153585829/how-wes-anderson-gets-his-soundtracks

I hope you enjoy the new film, Joanna!

Catherine Masi said...

Oh, I'm so glad you mentioned his new one... I had it on my list since I heard about it a year ago and was waiting for a shout out of its actual release. Thanks for the reminder! All Wes Anderson movies make me feel exactly perfect (although I haven't yet seen The Fantastic Mr. Fox). Having seen Bottle Rocket first, I think it carries the most nostalgia. But I'll take 'em all!

I adore his films and have for a long time. In fact, my husband worked on his first animated feature "Fantastic Mr. Fox" as a 2nd AD. I was so excited that he got to work on one of his films and I think it turned out great.

The Life Aquatic!! I love that scene near the end when they finally find the fish, to the tune of a song by Sigur Ros. Also, Willem Dafoe as the German assisstant is so great.

I love everything Wes Anderson but it took me a while. The first few times I tried to watch The Life Aquatic, I hated it. Then I saw The Darjeeling Limited and absolutely loved it. Especially Hotel Chevalier! After that, I went back and watched The Life Aquatic again and guess what? I loved it. I guess it just took me a while to understand his style. Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favorite of his movies. I can't wait to see Moonrise Kingdom but it doesn't look like it's playing anywhere near me.

Joanna,

Hotel Chevalier is my ultimate favorite Wes Anderson movie too! There's so much good stuff in there about heartbreak.

HC really makes me love Jason's character in Darjeeling too - you see him wearing the same orange robe, plays the same record, and smashes the bottle of Natalie's perfume as an effort to get rid of her (which, when you think about it, essentially just makes everything in the whole train compartment smell like her - even the conductor mentions it 'what's that smell in here?') It's such a great metaphor for trying to get over someone!

Amanda said...

BOTTLE ROCKET! Oh how I love Bottle Rocket. The Fantastic Mr Fox is also a favorite. Wes Anderson can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. Hotel Chevalier was wonderful and I honestly can't stand Natalie Portman!

One the many reasons I love Wes Anderson's movies is the dry humor in the script, not to mention the actors seem to suit each role so perfectly. I love seeing reoccurring characters, especially Jason Schwartzman. My can't pick between Darjeeling or Fantastic Mr. Fox!

I always say Life Aquatic... but that's slightly ingenuine because a man I once dated holds full responsibility for turning me onto that film. Even now when I watch it I wonder if my heart beats fast for the film, or for the memory of falling in love with it while simultaneously falling in love with the person who put it into the dvd player. So, really the truth is: Rushmore. Because that one I fancied hard all on my own. And Bill Murray is especially genius, ha... that scene in the hospital elevator with the double cigs in his mouth and the beer can kills me every time.

Wes Anderson holds a special place in my heart because 1. The very first date my husband and I went on, we went to see Darjeeling Limited and 2. Because I used Sigur Ros' "Staralfur" which was featured in Life Aquatic when they finally find the shark, as the song I walked down the aisle to at our wedding! :)

Moonrise Kingdom was so sweet. Love all Wes Anderson's movies. My least favorite is one of his firsts: Bottle Rocket. Favorite is Royal Tenebaums for sure.

Joanna, I want to see if my theory holds true for you! Was Hotel Chevalier your first Wes Anderson film?
