...Hotel Chevalier, the 13-minute film that proceeded The Darjeeling Limited. Have you ever seen it? Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman reveal the heartbreak after a breakup, when you clearly still love each other and feel really intimate, but you know you can't be together. Don't you know that exact feeling? It felt so real. Also, it's set in Paris. (You can watch the film on iTunes.)Which Wes Anderson movies do you love (or hate)?
P.S. Another romantic short film: God of Love.

Saw Moonrise yesterday! It was lovely and perfect.
ReplyDeleteI actually LOVED 'fantastic mr. fox' so much. I watched it 3 times in a week because I loved it so. But Hotel Chevalier is definitely one of my favorites. Then comes Darjeeling Limited.
ReplyDeletei forgot that he did fantastic mr fox. i never saw it. i couldn't get through darjeeling limited, i thought it was so pretentious! but i know so many people who liked it. my other fave was Royal Tenenbaums. the dad reminded me a little of my dad. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it yet, but I can't wait to see Moonrise! My favorite has to be The Darjeeling Limited, always leaves me laughing and cry.
ReplyDeletecrying* oops!
ReplyDeletei also LOVE hotel chevalier, but the darjeeling limited is wonderful, too :). i just bought a life aquatic at the goodwill, but have yet to watch it.. one of these days!
ReplyDeleteRoyal Tenenbaums <3. I still haven't seen The Darjeeling Limited...
ReplyDeleteI so wanted to get Royal Tennenbaums but I didn't. Seemed like my type of film.

I can't stand Rushmore! In fact, I fall asleep every time I try to watch it. So boring.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I just watched a British movie called "Submarine," which had a very Wes Anderson feel to it. Pretty good movie.
His first film, Bottlerocket, has always been my favorite. I highly recommend it! Owen Wilson is brilliant in it as well. And Rushmore is a close second. I don't enjoy his later stuff as much.
ReplyDeleteAll of them! Wes Anderson is one of my faves. I don't know if i could pick a favorite. I ADORE all the stuff he and Owen Wilson wrote together, and all of his most recent stuff is a total heart splatter on a screen (that's when he takes what's inside my heart and shows it to me on a 30 foot screen). I think the scene in the Royal Tenenbaums of Richie in the Bathroom is one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever recorded.
ReplyDeleteI loved Moonrise Kingdom! My favorite is still The Life Aquatic. My fiance and I went to see it on the big screen last weekend at Museum of the Moving Image. It was even more wonderful than I remembered!
ReplyDeleteTo me, nothing beats Rushmore. I fell in love with Jason Schwartzman in that movie and 14 years later he's still one of my favorite actors. Bummed Bored to Death got canned, but cannot wait to see Moonrise Kingdom!!
ReplyDeletehttp://hauteamericana.com/
I am a total Wes Anderson nerd. I once hosted a Wes Anderson Mini-Film-Fest and Costume Party at my apartment. I refused entry to anyone who wasn't dressed as a character from an Anderson movie. I, of course, dressed as Max Fisher ;)
ReplyDeleteBut my favorite one if The Darjeeling Limited. I have yet to see Moonrise Kingdom because I live in the middle of nowhere, but hopefully this weekend when I vist SF I'll sneak some time to go. So exciting!
Definitely Rushmore, with Royal Tenenbaums a close second. Am so looking forward to Moonrise!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! And you definately should see Fantastic mr. Fox. I also loved Hotel Chevalier! Have you seen the series with Jason Schwartzman called "bored to death"? Great show!
ReplyDeleteyes, marjolein, he is amazing in it!!!
ReplyDeleteoh! my husband and i are huge wes anderson fans. like, HUGE. i also loved hotel chevalier and have thee biggest girl crush on natalie portman. ;)
ReplyDeletexo, amanda
http://mamawatters.blogspot.com
My husband and I are also HUGE fans of Wes Anderson. We even named our son Max Fischer (actually Maximillian) because Rushmore is on the very top of our all time favorite movie lists. Bottle Rocket is a close second, but I do love all Wes Anderson films. Cannot wait to see Moonrise Kingdom - going on Friday!
ReplyDeleteI love Wes Anderson too. Bottle Rocket is so fun to watch, and Tenenabums is just beautiful. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteI love Wes Anderson too. Bottle Rocket is so fun to watch, and Tenenabums is just beautiful. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeletei love wes anderson! i can't wait to see moonrise kingdom once it's released in DC...my favorite is 'fantastic mr. fox' followed closely by 'the darjeeling limited' and 'bottlerocket'
ReplyDeleteJoanna, you haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox??! It's such an endearing and wonderfully clever movie, definitely did the book justice. I can never decide if it's my favourite or if The Royal Tenenbaums takes that prize.
ReplyDeleteMoonrise Kingdom isn't released in Canada until tomorrow, I've planned a date night around it. Ha!
i can't WAIT for moonrise kingdom, and loved hotel chevalier, too!
ReplyDeletethe only film i wasn't 100% behind was fantastic mr. fox - not sure if it was because i wasn't a devotee of the roald dahl story or if i just thought it was too precious?
Oh you MUST see 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'! Even Toby. It's hilarious, cute and I think you would really love it. Perfect for all ages.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite will always be Rushmore. It's hilarious, and has amazing montages. I wanted to be Max Fischer in high school! Or at least date him.
ReplyDeleteThe Darjeeling Limited! I have never seen Hotel Chevalier though, seems like I should.
ReplyDeleteI loved hotel chevalier too! And loved that it was kind of this little special secret thing on top of The Darjeeling Limited, which is also one of my favourite Wes Anderson movies.
ReplyDeleteHowever, despite what people say, I truly love Fantastic Mr. Fox. It is so sweet and charming. Granted I never read the Roald Dahl story, so I could see how so people felt like it didn't match up well enough.
Love Wes Anderson. My fave is Royal Tenenbaums, but Rushmore is a close 2nd. :)
ReplyDeleteI am also quite fond of Hotel Chevalier. Perhaps you meant to say that it *preceded* The Darjeeling Limited?
ReplyDeleteThe only one that I can watch over and over again is The Royal Tenenbaums. It's one of my favorite movies ever. I really really didn't like it when I saw it in the theatre. But then I wanted to watch it again once it came out on dvd and it slowly became an absolute fave.
ReplyDeleteLIFE AQUATIC is my favorite! "Philip, dynamite!" I've never seen Darjeeling Limited. Just watched Hotel Chevalier. Thank you so much for posting about it! It was perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe Royal Tenenbaums. love his style.
ReplyDeleteThe music is always spot on in his movies. Rushmore is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteIt's really difficult to pick a favourite, I guess it'd be a tie between The Royal Tenenbaums and Darjeeling Limited? Although Rushmore and Bottlerocket are really good too...
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I was following a South-Asian Literature class (I'm a literature major), and the professor used The Darjeeling Limited as an example of satire of the Orientalist vision of India that was predominent amongst westerners until recently, i.e. all the main characters expect to be automatically spiritually changed by India and stick with a 'Disneyland' vision of India until they are thrown off the train.
Loved hotel chevalier. I find myself listening to the song from it a lot.
ReplyDeleteSO excited to see it! Did you hear the interview on NPR's Fresh Air? It made me appreciate him and his works so much more. Also, I can't get enough Edward Norton or Bruce Willis in my life.
ReplyDeleteI love Darjeeling Limited, have fallen asleep twice to Life Aquatic, don't get Tenenbaums, and adored Mr. Fox. ("Cuss!")
I absolutely LOVED The Darjeeling Limited and I completely agree with you about Hotel Chevalier! I had that song "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?" stuck in my head for weeks!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, Rushmore is definitely my favorite!!!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Looking forward to seeing it!
ReplyDeleteLife Aquatic by far. Last week I threw a Wes Fest- each room in our place was a different movie complete with themed drinks, food and photo spots. So many people showed up in costume!!!
ReplyDeleteThank so much for reminding me of this new Wes Anderson movie. I needed one more idea for a date day I'm planning for my husband and I since he worked all Memorial Day Weekend. Beach + Wes Anderson = perfect day.
ReplyDeleteI think I am Wes Anderson's biggest fan. Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox are my favorites. I can't wait to see Moonrise Kingdom!
ReplyDeleteI was just discussing this with my Husby after buying the Moonrise Kingdom soundtrack...
ReplyDeleteLife Aquatic is my fave... but I think my intense love for all things David Bowie really plays into this. All of the Portuguese Bowie covers are AMAZING! Plus, Steve-Z. Love it.
And I'm with you on Royal Tennenbaum... he reminds me of my dad for sure. That movie is a classic!
That short was also my favorite part of Darjeeling Limited...so beautiful and heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie, however, is The Royal Tenenbaums. Just fantastic!
For all you Wes Anderson fans, check out Wes Anderson Bingo!
ReplyDeletehttp://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/ZZ03129D2F.jpg
So awesome!
There is nothing more perfect than a Wes Anderson movie. Or perhaps there's nothing more perfect than Bill Murray in a Wes Anderson movie. Or maybe there's nothing more perfect than the soundtrack to a Wes Anderson movie. It's all just so damn good.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this! I have to say, my first Wes Anderson love was Tenenbaums (cannot resist 70s tennis star Luke Wilson). And every time I see someone with a bright orange/red beanie, I say "Team Zissou" in my head. But Bottle Rocket is my favorite. A totally awkward, charming story with love in it.
ReplyDeletekind of love wes anderson films to a borderline obsession level. i think i'd have to go with royal tenenbaums as my number one, but i love them all so much that it only wins by a hair. and i definitely want to jump in on the "you must see fantastic mr. fox" bandwagon! i really think you and the whole fam would absolutely adore it. and side note, it has an amazing soundtrack (well all his films do really)--beach boys!
ReplyDeletecamille, that's fascinating.
ReplyDeleteheather, since you love bill murray, did you ever see this? :) http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2008/12/will-bill-murray-come-to-your-next.html
ReplyDeleteRoyal Tenenbaums all the way. One of these days I'm going to wallpaper my bedroom in that rad red with zebras print. The NYC that Anderson created in that movie is still the one that I like to keep in my head. Now I just supplement it with the NY I see through your blog :)
ReplyDeletei love wes anderson movies! royal tenenbaums is my favorite, but they are all fantastic. i am hoping moonrise kingdom comes to where i live!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say Rushmore is pretty close to perfection in my book! It's so fresh and kind of started the indie quirky move movement. Bill Murray is perfect and Jason Shartzman is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteSo strange you brought up that short film with Natalie portman. It has been on my mind all week. I love it. The first time I ever saw it I was pretty much going through the exact same sort of romance as the characters, and it hit so deep. Then "play with fire" by the stones became my obsession/anthem (played later in Darjeeling).
ReplyDeletei do love Hotel Chevalier but Darjeeling Limited is my true fave (even though i guess you could argue they are more or less one and the same). i know the hipsterest of hipsters scoff at DJ (and prefer his earlier work, i.e. Bottlerock) but i just love that Whitman family. although i do love Rushmore.... perhaps i can't decide after all.
ReplyDeleteRushmore has to be my all-time favorite, but Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox are all pretty wonderful too.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I seriously watched the trailer for Darjeeling Limited several times a week before it came out, but was so disappointed with the actual film. The same goes for The Life Aquatic. Here's hoping Moonrise Kingdom won't let me down!
One thing I have to say about all of them, even the ones I didn't like as much, is that the soundtracks are incredible! Have you seen this article about how he soundtracks his movies? It's pretty interesting:
http://www.npr.org/2012/05/24/153585829/how-wes-anderson-gets-his-soundtracks
I hope you enjoy the new film, Joanna!
Oh, I'm so glad you mentioned his new one... I had it on my list since I heard about it a year ago and was waiting for a shout out of its actual release. Thanks for the reminder! All Wes Anderson movies make me feel exactly perfect (although I haven't yet seen The Fantastic Mr. Fox). Having seen Bottle Rocket first, I think it carries the most nostalgia. But I'll take 'em all!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Wes Anderson! My all-time favorite is Rushmore, hands-down. (I'm obsessed wiht this: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2010/12/max-fischers-extracurricular-pencil-set.html)
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to see Moonrise!
I adore his films and have for a long time. In fact, my husband worked on his first animated feature "Fantastic Mr. Fox" as a 2nd AD. I was so excited that he got to work on one of his films and I think it turned out great.
ReplyDeleteThe Life Aquatic!! I love that scene near the end when they finally find the fish, to the tune of a song by Sigur Ros. Also, Willem Dafoe as the German assisstant is so great.
ReplyDeleteI love everything Wes Anderson but it took me a while. The first few times I tried to watch The Life Aquatic, I hated it. Then I saw The Darjeeling Limited and absolutely loved it. Especially Hotel Chevalier! After that, I went back and watched The Life Aquatic again and guess what? I loved it. I guess it just took me a while to understand his style. Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favorite of his movies. I can't wait to see Moonrise Kingdom but it doesn't look like it's playing anywhere near me.
ReplyDeletewww.lavieculturelle.com
Rushmore was a classic! LOVED it from start to finish. Also adored The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Can't wait to see Moonrise Kingdom!
ReplyDeleteRushmore has been my favorite movie for years and years.
ReplyDeleteI am also a huge fan of Wes Anderson. My absolute fave is Royal tennenbaums with Hotel chevalier and fantastic Mr fox very close! I watched Moonrise Kingdom a week ago: so enchanting!
ReplyDeleteJoanna,
ReplyDeleteHotel Chevalier is my ultimate favorite Wes Anderson movie too! There's so much good stuff in there about heartbreak.
HC really makes me love Jason's character in Darjeeling too - you see him wearing the same orange robe, plays the same record, and smashes the bottle of Natalie's perfume as an effort to get rid of her (which, when you think about it, essentially just makes everything in the whole train compartment smell like her - even the conductor mentions it 'what's that smell in here?') It's such a great metaphor for trying to get over someone!
BOTTLE ROCKET! Oh how I love Bottle Rocket. The Fantastic Mr Fox is also a favorite. Wes Anderson can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. Hotel Chevalier was wonderful and I honestly can't stand Natalie Portman!
ReplyDeletecannot WAIT to see it. tonight! late movie! yes!
ReplyDeleteand my favorite is probably the life aquatic. xo.
We love Wes Anderson! My husband and I went as Margot and Richie one Halloween, now that there are 3 of us we are thinking as going as Chas and the boys or Team Zissou! Hope this makes it to the CLE.
ReplyDeleteRoyal Tenenbaums is my favourite! My husband and I dressed as Margot and Richie for Halloween too! So much fun!
ReplyDeleteOne the many reasons I love Wes Anderson's movies is the dry humor in the script, not to mention the actors seem to suit each role so perfectly. I love seeing reoccurring characters, especially Jason Schwartzman. My can't pick between Darjeeling or Fantastic Mr. Fox!
ReplyDeletein order:
ReplyDelete1. Royal Tenenbaums
2. Fantastic Mr. Fox
3. Life Aquatic
4. Darjeeling Limited
5. Rushmore
funny, my bf and I were just talking about this last night!
(p.s. I adore fantastic mr. fox, and my 8yr old brother, who hates to sit through more than a 20min cartoon, loved it too!)
This sounds good. I have a serious thing for whimsical movies and movies that take place in America between the 50s and late 60s. This combines my favorite things, so I just might go to this too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteRushmore will always be my Rushmore.
ReplyDeleteI think Life Aquatic is my second favorite, but I love them all.
i saw moonrise kingdom over the weekend and loved it! his ridiculous props crack me up. and the soundtrack! i've had it on repeat all week.
ReplyDeleteFantastic Mr. Fox is so great! Love.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I can't wait to see this film this weekend! My favorite Wes Anderson movie is the Royal Tenenbaums but I really loved Fantastic Mr. Fox too :)
ReplyDeleteThe Life Aquatic is my favorite! A plus is the music - covers of David Bowie songs in Portuguese by Seu Jorge.. love it
ReplyDeleteOh man Joanna, you've got to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox, even your little guy will be able to enjoy it as well, and it's wonderful for adults. I went and saw it in theatre (ALONE, might I add, love movies by myself) & have seen it a few times since with various friends. Such a feel-good & well adapted film, all the little details are wonderful, such a treat! Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteI chuckled a bit when I clicked through and saw your favorite- you should totally read this: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2012/05/what-your-favorite-wes-anderson-movie-says-about-you/52783/#
ReplyDeleteAlso- YOU'VE NEVER SEEN MR. FOX? You must! It's a classic, as only Dahl could write!
A Life Aquatic - no doubt! Every time I watch that movie, I notice something new. And! I still use a bunch of Jon Brion's songs from the film as my ring tones.
ReplyDeleteI loved Moonrise Kingdom. I thought it was very sweet. Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favorite, though I could watch Darjeeling Limited a number of times without getting tired of it.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI always say Life Aquatic... but that's slightly ingenuine because a man I once dated holds full responsibility for turning me onto that film. Even now when I watch it I wonder if my heart beats fast for the film, or for the memory of falling in love with it while simultaneously falling in love with the person who put it into the dvd player. So, really the truth is: Rushmore. Because that one I fancied hard all on my own. And Bill Murray is especially genius, ha... that scene in the hospital elevator with the double cigs in his mouth and the beer can kills me every time.
ReplyDeletelove Wes Anderson! The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my very favorite movies, and i love his whole body if work -- so quirky & specifically designed & funny! He was recently on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, p.s.! Moonrise Kingdom opens at the end of the month in Maine & I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteI went to the link to watch Hotel Chevalier, but it had been deleted. Just thought I'd let you know!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Rushmore!
ReplyDeleteThe best Wes Anderson Movie and my favorite comedy of all time is Bottle Rocket 1996. Its when I fell in love with Owen Wilson. Do yourself a favor and rent it asap if you haven't seen it. I'm so excited to see moonrise Kingdom when it's released here!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, thank you so much for sharing Hotel Chevalier. I had not seen it before -- it is so accurate to my current life/relationship situation and was comforting to watch. A heartbreaking but beautiful little film.
ReplyDeleteWes Anderson holds a special place in my heart because 1. The very first date my husband and I went on, we went to see Darjeeling Limited and 2. Because I used Sigur Ros' "Staralfur" which was featured in Life Aquatic when they finally find the shark, as the song I walked down the aisle to at our wedding! :)
ReplyDeleteMoonrise Kingdom was so sweet. Love all Wes Anderson's movies. My least favorite is one of his firsts: Bottle Rocket. Favorite is Royal Tenebaums for sure.
ReplyDeleteLove all the small details in his movies. And I'm a big fan of the illustrations and type choices used.
Joanna, I want to see if my theory holds true for you! Was Hotel Chevalier your first Wes Anderson film?
ReplyDeleteSince it was a later one, I doubt it was, but in my experience everyone's favorite Wes Anderson film is their first one. Mine was Rushmore and it still has a special place in my heart today that no other Wes Anderson film could replace!
I love, love, love The Royal Tenenbaums. Could watch it everyday and have always wanted to live in that wackadoodle house!!
ReplyDeleteThe Royal Tenenbaums hands down, a close second going to Rushmore
ReplyDeleteThe Royal Tennenbaums is a brilliant and beautiful movie. The soundtrack and the Alec Baldwin narration put it over the edge of perfection. Love, love, love.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could pick a favorite, because I love them all. I will say that I love The Life Aquatic more and more with each re-watch; I didn't like it much when I saw it for the first time in theater...but I've grown to love it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, my Hubs & I are half joking (& half serious) when we reference this as one of our favorite Anderson productions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAKwITTMCxI
The Life Aquatic is my favorite Wes Anderson movie of all time. He's also one of my very favorite directors. I loved the Darjeeling Limited. I see what you mean about being pretentious, but I think once you let that go, it's an amazing movie. My husband and I are still waiting for the Royal Tenenbaums to come out on Blu-Ray!
ReplyDeleteI'm being excited to see Moonrise Kingdom next weekend!
Rushmore is my favorite Wes Anderson movie! Jason Schwartzman is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because I live in Detroit and Moonrise Kingdom isn't out yet in Michigan... I kind of freaked out this past weekend when I went to look it up and found that out. I even called the Main Art theater to see when it's coming... unfortunately not until the end of June.
i love wes anderson movies and adored moonrise kingdom. it was pretty awesome. the life aquatic, royal tenenbaums and the fantastic mr fox are some more faves.. love em all though ;)
ReplyDeleteTHE LIFE AQUATIC!! one of my favorite movies ever. I'm not one of those people who reads the same books over and over or watches the same movies over and over, but I make an exception for that one.
ReplyDeleteI went to an advanced screening on Moonrise Kingdom and I LOVED it! I am usually not a huge fan of Wes Anderson movies but this one was truly great. Highly recommended!
ReplyDeletelove darjeeling and tenenbaums. needs to see moonrise asap. clearly.
ReplyDeleteDear Jo,
ReplyDeleteLoved Darjeeling too! But i have to say Monnrise reaaally inspired me in my rainy Paris (where we miss the sun a lot!):
if you have time, please have a look:

The movie is actually on my list to see. I LOVE nonhollywood movies.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless
Loved Moonrise Kingdom! I want to check out Hotel Chevalier, but iTunes says it is not available. Any other recommendations for where to snag it?

ReplyDeleteI went to see it on my birthday :) It was great. I was especially impressed with the young cast. I will definitely see it again!
ReplyDeleteI really love all of W. Anderson's films. I saw MK a few weeks ago at a pre-screening in SF.
ReplyDeleteI liked it, but I didn't dig the 12 year olds in their underwear...
@Evette :
ReplyDelete"I still use a bunch of Jon Brion's songs from the film as my ring tones."
Jon Brion didn't write music for that-- it was Mark Mothersbaugh!
I loved Moonrise Kingdom!...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is still The Life Aquatic, is amazing.
I found this Blog so interesting.
