ReplyDeleteI actually LOVED 'fantastic mr. fox' so much. I watched it 3 times in a week because I loved it so. But Hotel Chevalier is definitely one of my favorites. Then comes Darjeeling Limited.

I can't stand Rushmore! In fact, I fall asleep every time I try to watch it. So boring.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I just watched a British movie called "Submarine," which had a very Wes Anderson feel to it. Pretty good movie.
His first film, Bottlerocket, has always been my favorite. I highly recommend it! Owen Wilson is brilliant in it as well. And Rushmore is a close second. I don't enjoy his later stuff as much.
ReplyDeleteAll of them! Wes Anderson is one of my faves. I don't know if i could pick a favorite. I ADORE all the stuff he and Owen Wilson wrote together, and all of his most recent stuff is a total heart splatter on a screen (that's when he takes what's inside my heart and shows it to me on a 30 foot screen). I think the scene in the Royal Tenenbaums of Richie in the Bathroom is one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever recorded.

My husband and I are also HUGE fans of Wes Anderson. We even named our son Max Fischer (actually Maximillian) because Rushmore is on the very top of our all time favorite movie lists. ReplyDeleteThe only one that I can watch over and over again is The Royal Tenenbaums. It's one of my favorite movies ever. I really really didn't like it when I saw it in the theatre. But then I wanted to watch it again once it came out on dvd and it slowly became an absolute fave.

ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I was following a South-Asian Literature class (I'm a literature major), and the professor used The Darjeeling Limited as an example of satire of the Orientalist vision of India that was predominent amongst westerners until recently, i.e. all the main characters expect to be automatically spiritually changed by India and stick with a 'Disneyland' vision of India until they are thrown off the train.
Loved hotel chevalier. I find myself listening to the song from it a lot.

And every time I see someone with a bright orange/red beanie, I say "Team Zissou" in my head. But Bottle Rocket is my favorite. A totally awkward, charming story with love in it.

ReplyDeleteSo strange you brought up that short film with Natalie portman. It has been on my mind all week. I love it. The first time I ever saw it I was pretty much going through the exact same sort of romance as the characters, and it hit so deep. Then "play with fire" by the stones became my obsession/anthem (played later in Darjeeling).
ReplyDeletei do love Hotel Chevalier but Darjeeling Limited is my true fave (even though i guess you could argue they are more or less one and the same). i know the hipsterest of hipsters scoff at DJ (and prefer his earlier work, i.e. Bottlerock) but i just love that Whitman family. although i do love Rushmore.... perhaps i can't decide after all.

Oh, I'm so glad you mentioned his new one... I had it on my list since I heard about it a year ago and was waiting for a shout out of its actual release. Thanks for the reminder! All Wes Anderson movies make me feel exactly perfect (although I haven't yet seen The Fantastic Mr. Fox). Having seen Bottle Rocket first, I think it carries the most nostalgia. But I'll take 'em all!

I adore his films and have for a long time. In fact, my husband worked on his first animated feature "Fantastic Mr. Fox" as a 2nd AD. I was so excited that he got to work on one of his films and I think it turned out great.

ReplyDeleteI love everything Wes Anderson but it took me a while. The first few times I tried to watch The Life Aquatic, I hated it. Then I saw The Darjeeling Limited and absolutely loved it. Especially Hotel Chevalier! After that, I went back and watched The Life Aquatic again and guess what? I loved it. I guess it just took me a while to understand his style. Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favorite of his movies. I can't wait to see Moonrise Kingdom but it doesn't look like it's playing anywhere near me.

HC really makes me love Jason's character in Darjeeling too - you see him wearing the same orange robe, plays the same record, and smashes the bottle of Natalie's perfume as an effort to get rid of her (which, when you think about it, essentially just makes everything in the whole train compartment smell like her - even the conductor mentions it 'what's that smell in here?') It's such a great metaphor for trying to get over someone!
BOTTLE ROCKET! Oh how I love Bottle Rocket. The Fantastic Mr Fox is also a favorite. Wes Anderson can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. Hotel Chevalier was wonderful and I honestly can't stand Natalie Portman!

I went and saw it in theatre (ALONE, might I add, love movies by myself) & have seen it a few times since with various friends. ReplyDeleteI always say Life Aquatic... but that's slightly ingenuine because a man I once dated holds full responsibility for turning me onto that film. Even now when I watch it I wonder if my heart beats fast for the film, or for the memory of falling in love with it while simultaneously falling in love with the person who put it into the dvd player. So, really the truth is: Rushmore. Because that one I fancied hard all on my own. And Bill Murray is especially genius, ha... that scene in the hospital elevator with the double cigs in his mouth and the beer can kills me every time.

ReplyDeleteSince it was a later one, I doubt it was, but in my experience everyone's favorite Wes Anderson film is their first one. Mine was Rushmore and it still has a special place in my heart today that no other Wes Anderson film could replace!

The Life Aquatic is my favorite Wes Anderson movie of all time. He's also one of my very favorite directors. I loved the Darjeeling Limited. ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because I live in Detroit and Moonrise Kingdom isn't out yet in Michigan... I kind of freaked out this past weekend when I went to look it up and found that out. I even called the Main Art theater to see when it's coming... unfortunately not until the end of June.
