Summer Essential #1: Water bottle

I'm excited to announce a new series on Cup of Jo: Summer Essentials, where I'll be sharing some awesome things (beach towels, swimsuits, peach lipstick) that you might like this summer. Hope you enjoy it!

First up: Water bottles. BKR bottles, made in San Francisco, are bright and modern. The bottles are glass but have a silicone sleeve, so they won't break; and water tastes so good from a glass bottle, versus plastic or stainless-steel (which can cause that metallic flavor). At $28, it's not cheap, but will end up being less expensive--and better for the planet--than buying one-use bottles of water all summer. Plus, they're so beautiful to carrry around; I have the red one!

Thoughts? Do you have a water bottle?

P.S. Alex actually wrote this article back in 2007.

I had a stainless steel water bottle that really kept water cold, but lost it. Even though I have tried others, none of them work as well. These bottles are so pretty!

Love them! And good they're glass not plastic. Can't wait to see more of your new series! It's the best time of year!

I love the pholosopy of this company - beautiful design and also "green." I wish they had more products to browse!

Love these but I bet they don't ship outside the USA :-( I will go and investigate as I would love two of these ;-)

Nice colors, but they are a tad expensive. I have a Camelbak and a Nalgene bottle that I use. I love that the Nalgene can be frozen and I can have ice cold water all day!

I really want one of these, I dance 4 days of the week and drink so much water, I have a metal bottle right now but would much rather have glass! Thanks for sharing!

I love glass water bottles! I bought one for my mom last year and wanted to keep it for myself! Glass keeps water cooler than plastic for a longer amount of time, and I'm sure that silicon wrap helps!

this would save mey daily hunting afor a reusable plastic one which I have inevitably thrown in the recycling bin! Definately on the 'must have' list!

Those are great water bottles, but what I am more interested in is your husband's writing! I only found this blog a month or two ago, so I don't know if you have previously mentioned that he writes for the NY Times, but I didn't know that. I looked to see a list of his articles, and I have read and enjoyed so many of them, and was oblivious to the connection. (I also found your NY Times wedding announcement! I'm not a stalker!) You guys are both talented an engaging writers.

I have three Camelbaks (office, home, gym bag) and I love that I don't have to worry about them breaking.
These are so pretty, but I would still worry about breaking them. Great gift idea, too (Austinites lug their reusables everywhere - especially water bottles in the summer!)

Oh yes, P.S., I have a couple Sigg bottles I use in daily life, and Nalgene for hiking.

that is a fantastic product! and a fantastic idea for mother's day (my mum works out ALL THE TIME so i know she'd appreciate this!)...thanks for the head's up!

These are so cute. I use this Life Factory bottles (also glass with as silicone sleeve): http://www.lifefactory.com/adults/16-oz-flip.html

sweet heavens to betsy. i drink water out of mason jars all day long because i greatly prefer glass. this is the perfect solution!

Hi all, if you like these water bottles, then you may also love the ones by Lifefactory, which are also glass with a silicone sleeve in some really beautiful colors. I have the aquamarine colored one and it's wonderful! It can even be washed in the dishwasher unlike Nalgenes or most stainless steel ones.

Cheers!

I can't help but think of that article I read about people drinking too much water because they had been told it was good for them and ending up getting sick...

Anon- One of the nice things about Nalgene is that they can be put in the dishwasher and are less likely to break than glass!

Sounds great. I could use some summer/ beach tips. I feel like I get a little sloppy sometimes, and could use some polish when I'm playing in the sun. :)

@Anonymous at 12:24 (I'm a different Anon from the one you've addressed) - I agree. I put both Nalgenes AND Sigg stainless steel bottles in the top shelf of the dishwasher. I don't see why they couldn't go in.

Anonymous said...

tossed the plastic thing in the thermal sleeve. Now I reuse juice bottles, use...recycle...use another and so on. Double up on recycle so now I can say to a new sweater...i drank you.

LKH said...

Would you consider using it for Toby? I feel like I'm constantly on the hunt for non-plastic bottles/cups for my 21 month old. She's getting pretty good at drinking out of an open cup. What do you think? Too delicate even with the silicone?

{Liana} said...

Gorgeous! (Not typically how I'd describe a water bottle!!) I'd be into that turquoise one...I've been cautious of the glass covered in silicone options...maybe I'll try it out?!

these are pretty and such a great alternative to plastic! I carry a red Sigg bottle everywhere I go, couldn't live without it.

Pretty, but too expensive compared to my Klean Kanteen bottle (which I thought was expensive to begin with). I've never had a metallic taste from my stainless steel bottles. I wash them before use and regularly after that. How heavy are these bottles? Glass seems like it weighs more than stainless steel. But these are pretty, and ANYTHING is better than awful plastic disposable bottles.

P.S. Have you seen the movie Blue Gold? It's about water around the world.

Nicole said...

i have the camelback water bottle in purple and its the best! i use it at the gym all the time!

I just bought one of these after seeing them at my yoga studio - I love that the mouth isn't enormous like with some other glass water bottles.

patternoflife said...

These look great. But throwing them in my jeep probably wouldn't be so great. The thing I love the most about my Camelbak is the bite valve. Basically after a long hot (Texas) run, I'm too whipped to drink like a sane person and always end up pouring water all over my face/mouth. But with the straw built in, I'm guaranteed to keep most of the water on my insides! :)

Anonymous said...

I bought one of these about a month ago, and will never go back to a plastic (or even metal!) bottle again. It's a bit pricey, but very worth it.

these water bottles are awesome, glass makes all the difference, for sure. i love it!

one thing i don't love: youtube speed stick commercials starting when i click on this page. not pleasant, way too commerically.

Wow these are beautiful! How do you wash them? Would you have to remove the silicone sleeve?

Amy Turman said...

$28 isn't that expensive for a good water bottle. The only upgrade that I would make to this bottle would be to have a suction/straw type of thing - I tend to spill when I'm at the gym or walking around otherwise!

CORRECTION - these are NOT made in San Fran. They are manufactured in China. Which is a "no buy" - in addition to reducing my waste, I would like to reduce my carbon footprint, and that means not buying things imported from China.

so weird! i just got mine a few weeks ago and highlighted it on my blog just this past friday-- bkr is literally the best water bottle on the planet!

Kate said...

I have to get the cheapest Nalgenes because I will inevitably lose any and every "neat" water bottle I ever buy (after a few good full years of use, that is). But those BKR bottles look super cool! Maybe when I'm in San Francisco in the fall I'll look for one as a souvenir!

We have about three thousand Siggs {or 5, whatever} for the kids, but I still carry this one: http://www.marlowesloft.com/2012/03/choosing-reusable.html

I was looking at these the other day! So pretty but the extra weight of the glass in addition to my camera, wallet, makeup bag, etc, made me think twice about buying one. wah wah!

I love these. We have glass bottles for Gus, they have bright colored sleeves and can be later repurposed into water bottles. didnt want him drinking from plastic - agree there is a funny taste.

Kate said...

I agree with Alex's article on water, that's why I've carried reusable water bottles for years and years, but I'm also mystified that we don't express the same outrage over coke bottles.

Jennie said...

I have a purple Nalgene bottle and I LOVE it. The water tastes great, it's basically indestructible, and it was only $10!!!! Love that thing.

They really don't break? I drop EVERYTHING and have to two kids....
I do like my stainless steel because it keeps things cold, but I hear you on the metal taste issue.

I LOVE my BKR! I have the pink one called "Candy." I've dropped it a couple times without it breaking and it has never leaked with me. Water REALLY does taste better from the glass bottle!! I found mine at Whole Foods.

Lauren said...

These seem really cool; I definitely like the taste of water out of glass versus plastic. I have a metal water bottle that I drink from all day at school (I'm a teacher, and my throat can get so dry), and it doesn't give the water a metallic taste at all.

I'm not a "militant environmentalist," (and really don't even think of myself as an environmentalist) but after a little thought, a couple things bother me here. Here's my take on calling things like this "responsible," (as one commenter did, and as is generally suggested with reusable water bottles.) I have the same beef with reusable shopping bags and a myriad of other "green" products, too. The problem is, marketing these things as environmentally responsible is really a kind of sneaky and hypocritical form of marketing, aimed at a certain demographic in our consumerist society. The fact of the matter is that in manufacturing, distributing, selling, and buying these products, we're still introducing all sorts of new unnecessary items into the world. There are, of course, some "not so green" things which go along with the manufacture and distribution of these products, but maybe more importantly, we're made to feel that buying YET ANOTHER PRODUCT is virtuous. In reality, we could easily reuse an old jelly jar or baby bottle, or plastic disposable water bottle (which we're bound to buy at some point even if we usually carry a reusable bottle.) We could use whatever beat up reusable water bottle we already have. These are pretty bottles and I am interested in them because I am NOT all that interested in being perfectly environmentally responsible, or opting out of this consumerist world. But, there are a lot of people who believe they're being responsible and "green" if they go out and buy a cute new bottle, a cute new shopping bag, or whatever, when they could easily repurpose something else. But, they're not.

Still have my old plastic water bottle, luckily its BHA free!! This is so cute though!! Thanks!

I have a job that requires me to be outside most of the day, so I need a water bottle that is light! These are pretty but even when i'm not working I can't imagine carrying around a bottle that is so heavy. I have a bobble bottle and I love it! Not only can I carry with my quite a bit of water (1 liter), but is bpa free and weighs next to nothing.

kelsey said...

Oh, I love this blog! And I neeeeed this bottle. My friend has one in lime and it's just too cute. One side gripe: It's so obvious when people from are hocking their product in comments. Please people. I don't mean to offend, but it's just gross. Maintain the sanctity of this beautiful space. And by the way, you are never going to convince me that a "light" plastic chemical bottle is the way to go. Bpa is just one of many scary chemicals in plastic. I don't care how light it is, I'd sooner drink from my closed toe Jimmy Choo.

i picked up a nalgene 2 years ago that someone had left in the dining hall, and i carry it around with me everywhere. i dropped it in the street once and was so worried for a second, but it's so sturdy that it only got scratched. i love that i can just carry it around with me everywhere.

I'm so happy that people are discovering bkr! I have two (I couldn't resist when the fall colors came out). The price definitely seemed steep at first, and I have to admit I only bought my first one because I was in a "why the hell not" mood and wanted to treat myself to something cool. But (cheesy as it sounds) it totally changed the way I think about/drink water. I used to go through TONS of plastic bottles at my office, but after getting the bkr I just used that and our filtered water spout and it makes me feel kind of awesome, like I'm doing good. Now that I got a second one for home/carrying around (they're really not that heavy) I almost never buy or drink bottled water. So what started out as a novelty purchase made me go a bit greener, which is pretty rad if you think about it.

West Coast Girl Friday said...

I have the green one, and LOVE it! I feel like I'm drinking from an old stubby beer bottle. Which is nice, as your water doesn't spill all over your face as you take a drink.

Sarah said...

These look awesome :) but they don't seem to sell them in London, which is a little odd. I used to have a nalgene which I was so in love with, bought it for summer camp and just didn't stop using it for ages, but I do think these look so pretty(esp. the green one).

I've had one of these for about two months now-it blends in much better to my office, and despite fighting the reusable bottle fight it appeals to a way wider range of people (i.e. my 57 year old boss) who weren't as into my mason jars, nalgenes, metal bottles. Props to BKR and Cup Of Jo for the great suggestion!

One note though: if you are ordering these online-get a few extra lids in advance. I was super bummed that mine cracked (not the seal, but the loop) within a few weeks of using it gently, but daily (office-gym-home). Still some kinks to work out i guess :)
(I have it in pool).

Thanks so much for posting about this, Joanna! I've been looking for a healthy sunscreen for a few years that doesn't leave a solid white film all over my body! It's scary to know what's in the products we use every day. I recently read "No More Dirty Looks" which is a book all about the chemicals that are in our beauty products and skin care. It's really gross, and hard to believe that it's legal. It's worth checking out. Have a great weekend!cheap prom dresses
