This line is so beautiful, but insanely expensive. I agree w/a few other comments and wonder why maternity lines use non-pregnant woman to model their maternity clothes. I'm not saying a woman can't be thin and just have a belly, but this girl simply cannot be pregnant.

These are pretty but.....aren't they basically just 'large' sizes of normal clothes? They kind of just look baggy, like when you pull on your husbands t-shirt at 4 months pregnant to feel like you've got more room!

ReplyDeleteI don't know about other maternity lines, but I think part of Hatch's concept is that the you can still wear their clothes post-pregnancy. So maybe they used a skinny chic to easily show that they look nice with or without a bump? I'm just guessing!

ReplyDeleteI was checking out Hatch's website for the first time the other day, and while I loved just about everything I saw, I just couldn't imagine spending that kind of money. I totally get that these items of clothing are made to suit both pregnant and non-pregnant women alike, but still!
ReplyDeleteIn this economy, I would feel too ashamed to spend that much money on such simple, although lovely, clothing. I'm curious to know what demographics the company is geared toward. It looks like they're trying to appeal to the J.Crew/Madewell crowd, including myself, but the prices are borderline high-end designer. Is that a good strategy?
Obviously, this is just my own opinion, but perhaps it's something Hatch should consider. I don't believe their target audience can afford this.
My husband and I are thinking about having a baby, and cute clothes like these make the idea sound even better than it already is!

ReplyDeleteLately, I have noticed that you're doing a lot of posts on companies that advertise with you, but that you are clear are not "sponsored posts." Can you let us know the actual difference? It's confusing because it seems like a plurality, if not majority, of your sponsored-like non-sponsored posts (such as this one) are of companies that do in fact advertise with you. It seems like fewer of those kinds of posts are actually of companies from which you don't get any money, ie. don't advertise here.
I think it's fair to know the difference between advertisement and editorial content, as a reader, so I'd appreciate your elucidating (of course, with an answer that is not simply "this isn't a sponsored post," since you have been clear on that point).
Also, I agree with the above commenters on this company's aesthetic - skinny white and white-looking models with fake bellies. Yuck! I'm a pregnant woman of color in the city, and the models/advertising alone would make me steer clear. I'd rather spend my money on a company that sees me!

I am in good shape, but it is hard to find chic "slouchy" clothes that aren't matronly ! I love the fabrics and styles (the caftan/ the slouch dress), and I find them well priced for something I will wear all the time. Hey girls, tell your moms about these clothes!

ReplyDeleteI can't help but notice that every model I see lately (not just on this site) is tall and stick-thin. I know this has been the norm for a while, especially on runway, but even commercial sites on the web are straying from beautiful curves. A lot of the super expensive clothes they're wearing wouldn't look right on the average sized 12 girl. I just wish I saw more variety... ESP with a maternity line.
It kind of makes me sad knowing there's likely lots of teens/young women looking at these models, struggling with their own self-image and the definition of beautiful.

ReplyDeleteAgree that the clothes are gorgeous but I wouldn't be tempted to buy anything until I say them on an actual pregnant looking woman, not someone stick-thin with a beach ball belly. I KNOW that some women are like that when pregnant but it definitely is not what I look like, or any of the women I know, so it seems like a silly marketing scheme. If you want to convince me that I will look great in your clothes, could you find a model that is a bit more 'average' looking? For example, how about a plus-sized model with a fake belly? Atleast its a step closer to reality.

I like the look of these on really thin women. But for a lot of us who are curvier, this kind of baggy, no-waistline look just doesn't work - especially when you're pregnant. I'm 25 weeks right now, and have to stick to fitted maternity clothes to keep from looking like a giant whale. But do keep the maternity-related posts coming! I get so many great ideas from your site :)

ReplyDeleteLove the clothes! I must agree with other commentors that the regular skinny models with bumps is not too appealing for maternity wear. I like how other brands like old navy use a slightly bigger model so you at least get the idea of how A normal pregnant woman might look!
ReplyDeletei love these maternity clothes. I always say just because you`re pregnant doesn`t mean one must let herself go. I see it as an opportunity to venture into a whole new style of wardrobe you wouldn`t normally get to wear otherwise. The new mother is beautiful and fabulous and there is no need to hide her behind frumpy man clothes found in her husband`s closet. As for everybody`s comments on the skinny models with fake bumps, yes I agree they should mix it up a bit but if that`s the image they are going for then no need to knock them. I know plenty of women that are still very slim when they are pregnant. They do exist and no it does not mean they are unhealthy, we are just built differently that`s all!

ReplyDeleteHello, all. Captain Obvious, here! I just wanted to point out that these clothes wouldn't look anywhere near as nice on anyone who isn't a model. They're so baggy! The average woman, pregnant or not, would not look great in such baggy clothes. And, by the way, when I say 'average woman' I don't mean average overweight woman. I'm a size 2-4, and I'm certain I would look like a baby whale in these shapeless clothes.

I completely agree with all the other commenters here. As someone who is currently 5 months pregnant, I love all these clothes, but I can't help but wonder how they will look on a real pregnant body. Even though I am 5'9" I don't think I could pull off most of these in my lumpy pregnant state. I also just can't justify spending this kind of money on something that I will wear for a few months and then want to burn (if you have been pregnant before you will know what I mean about wanting to get rid of all your maternity clothes!).

These are vey unhealthy images - advertising's assault on the bodies of real women at its worst! I am a female OB-GYN, and wouldn't in good conscience ever encourage my patients, pregnant or not, to consider these advertising images as anything but harmful. These shameful images promote dangerous and unhealthy ideas about what a pregnant female body should look like. 90% of my pregnant patients would suffer miscarriages if their bodies looked like those of these models, whom I presume - for their sakes, at least - are not in fact pregnant.

I think maternity clothes are come in many style. According to me this time, though, it is probably safe to say that the clothes will have more sequins and sparkle, given Beyoncé's signature look. Look at the singer's maternity style thus far, and tell us if you think her designs will rock pregnant mamas' worlds!
